I have been a patient of Dr Chen and his PA at Advanced Pain Care for 5+ years. In the five years he has been my doctor I have had many pleasant conversations with him about movies, books, and health care. I've never had any issues. I take my meds as directed, I think I've needed to pick them up early once or twice due to travel but I've also picked them up late bc I've taken less than prescribed and have had extra. So I was in complete shock when he spoke to me in an incredibly condescending way today when I called to get a refill on my medication. I didn't realize I was calling my meds in early and when I was informed I asked for a record of my refill/pick up dates. I wanted to try to figure out why my dates/meds were off. After a call to the pharmacy, the practice and a condescending call from his nurse Dr Chen called me. After being a patient for over five years and never having a single issue he more than insinuated that I was abusing my medication. All I asked for when I called was a record of my medication fill dates. I did not ask him to fill my meds early, I did not ask for an earlier appointment yet he continued to repeat that if I was taking my medication as prescribed I would not have a problem. I asked him to please not speak to me as if I was a drug seeking junkie after he told me that he anticipated this phone call after releasing my medication early due to travel three months earlier. In five years I never called about any issues with my medications, in five years we had always had such a pleasant Dr/patient relationship and yet the first time I have confusion over my refill date and only ask for my records he speaks to me like I'm trying to con him somehow. It was so upsetting that I decided to just ask him how to taper off the medication. He tells me he has patients to see and I say "can I ask you one question?" and he hung up on me. A doctor who I trusted for years hung up on me. I will never return to him or the practice. The only reason I gave him two stars instead of one is because I did trust him for several years. Oh, I do feel the need to add, I am not prescribed an addictive opioid pain medication, quite the opposite actually. I was on a low dose pain medication that is also used in high doses to treat addiction. So it's not even a medication one would abuse which made the whole altercation even more confusing. The experience was devastating bc I truly trusted Dr Chen and the way he spoke to me was so unexpected and hurtful. read more

Honestly, I was terrified when I met him, simply based off the reviews I'd seen online, but I actually had a great session with him. he explained everything in a relatable manner and was very straightforward. He put me at ease and I no longer feel like my painful bone disease will be the end of me. Dr Chen is an excellent physician that specializes in pain management and I'm glad to say he was my doctor while I lived in Texas. If you need that kind of medical professional I highly recommend him, he has a very honest and adult bedside manner. He will tell you what he thinks and will generally give you all kinds of options. And if problems arise in your care he will be there for you, he called me a couple times on weekends or evenings when an emergency occurred. These were meds my psychologist and my endocrinologist prescribed me. He walked in the door like he was on a mission and immediately started his tirade. I couldn't take anymore, so I walked out. Dr. Chen is reliable even when you wake up sick and need a same-day appointment. My husband and I have gone to him when we had a bout of bronchitis, and also when Nick had a freaky incident involving getting nuclear-hot wing sauce in his eye and had half his face swell up, a la Elephant Man. Then another time, when Nick had a hardcore bicycle crash, Dr. Chen was the one who checked out his concussion and declared him ready to drive/work again. We found him randomly on our insurance website, but we found a real gem. He's caring without going overboard, thorough without over-diagnosing. The best part about him is that he never makes you wait. You don't sit waiting in the lobby or exam room. He's really punctual and you're in and out quickly. I liked Dr.Chen personally but he failed me on two occasions: Once when I asked if I as a male was testable for hpv he confirmed my belief that there was no test and asked why I cared to know since it is essentially non-harmful to males. WTF do you think I want to know?! Because I care about the people with whom I have sex! The second time was when I had mono as an adult. It's rare, yes, but the symptoms matched and mono as a possibile diagnosis even came up in conversation. To be fair, the symptoms are similar to a typical infection - the difference being that my symptoms had been mild and long-lasting which is typical for mono. He did not order a mono spot which is a quick, easy, cheap, reliable test for mono and instead prescribed antibiotics which on the label said they were counter-indicated for mono (could cause a bad rash). A couple days later I went to a different doc who suspected mono, did the test, and confirmed it. I will not go back to Dr.Chen. read more

I lucked into finding Dr. Chen when my previous doctor moved, and I'm extremely happy with him. I like the fact that he listens well and he's a straight-shooter. My previous doctor had a habit of talking so much that it was hard to even tell him if I had a problem - this is not a problem with Dr. C. I'm at that age where certain unpleasant medical realities are coming to surface (for instance, I need a colonoscopy) and Dr. C is very direct about this kind of thing, which I appreciate. Long story short: he gets a Big Thumbs Up from me. (Also, he's very tech and computer literate. Which really has nothing to do with his skill as a physician, but I know that I personally relate better to techies). read more

He is an awful man. I just moved to Austin and needed to get established with a primary care doctor. I have fibromyalgia and needed refills for my medication and just a general check up. The appointment basically turned into a lecture. What I got from that lecture was that he did not believe that fibromyalgia existed and was against treating it. (By the way, I use a combo of cymbalta and neurontin to treat it. Both of which are non-narcotics). He was also completely against me using a sleep aid, even though a lack of quality sleep triggers my flare-ups. He went on to say that the sleep aid would destroy my memory making abilities. I asked for advise on an alternative and what to do about my inability to stay asleep. He replied, "I don't know." In short, this doctor was rude, demeaning, and very unhelpful. It was a waste of my time and money. read more

I think Dr. Chen is a wonderful physician. I randomly found him under our insurance plan when we first moved here two years ago. I thought I would check out a few different doctors but was so pleased with Dr. Chen that I stuck with him. Things I love 1. I can almost always get an appointment with him the same day I call 2. I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to see him. I've even had the nurse calling my name as I was signing my credit card receipt for my copayment. I would like to say that there was one time what I wasn't able to see Dr. Chen and I was extremely sick so I made appointment with another doctor in the same office. I waited 45 minutes to see him. It reminded me of my doctors visits back in West Texas. Shoot me! 3. He always says just enough. He isn't overly wordy and doesn't blow smoke up your ass, but he gets across to you what needs to be said. This being said, my appointments are short but I never walk out feeling rushed. He takes time to explain things and will even talk to you about issues that are different than what you came in for. 4. His staff is always friendly and efficient. So if you are looking for a great doctor's experience, I would definitely recommend Dr. Chen! read more

I have been going to see Dr. Chen for close to 10 years. At first I wasn't a fan. But as other have said, he is a straight shooter, blunt to the point, and doesn't sugar coat. That's the kind of doctor I like. If you're looking for someone to hold your hand and tell you everything is going to be alright, you've come to the wrong doctor. I wish I read the negative reviews before accepting an appointment with him. I was sick and my regular doctor at ADC was fully booked for the day so they checked Chen's schedule. Apparently he had several slots availabilities. I kind of felt that's not a good sign but decided to give it a try. I thought "how bad could it be". Well it was quite a waste of my time and my experience explained why nobody wanted to see him. He showed no interests in my health issues and did little for diagnostic purpose. He was condescending while talking to me and behaved as if my questions and requests were a bother to him. My visit ended quickly without me learning anything new about my conditions. He did give me a couple of prescriptions, the purpose of which is to make me go away I suspect. One of them I had to ask him for because I wanted something to manage the symptoms. Here is the icing of the cake, I tried to fill this prescription up and the pharmacist couldn't read his handwritings! How many times you think that happens? I have filled several prescriptions from various doctors with this pharmacist, and I have never had this problem before. That's it! I am done with this doctor once and for all. First off, he is blunt and to the point. If you want a quick appointment and someone to not sugar-coat things for you,he's the guy to see. However, he is VERY rude and has ZERO bedside manner. I told him I wanted blood testing for arthritis because of the severe pain I have been experiencing durning the weather, and he told me it would come back to haut me if I try to get insurance later (I already have it, btw) and that because of my age (31), that it really wasn't needed. Dr came in a minute later, checked me out, sent me down to first floor to have my blood taken. After all that, I left at 2:26, 4 minutes before my appt. I have been going to Andre Chen because of my parents insurance since I was about 12. I was a gymnast at the time of my horrific injury but the injury wasn't caused by the sport. instead it was an accident in my backyard on the trampoline, after being "double bounced" by three people i was sent flying into the air where my knee then made contact with the outer metal ring, cause my knee to swell IMMEDIATELY to the size of a soft ball. I made an appointment to see Dr. Chen the next day, my knee still the size of a softball and still unable to move it without EXTREME pain. Within 5 mins and a few tests and x rays, he declared that my knee was just "BADLY BRUISED" and it should heal within a week. I went to a specialist who was AWESOME and immediately said after examining my knee for 30 seconds, "I think you have broken something" and he was right, I had a piece of bone about the size of a dime, floating around in my knee from the impact of my knee hitting the metal ring around the trampoline so hard. Andre Chen diagnosed me with a "badly bruised knee" proscribed me pain medication, which is usually the solution to every problem I have when I go, even when I have a cough. This diagnosis was TERRIBLE and INACCURATE and left me in pain for about 3 days until I decided that my knee couldn't have just been BADLY BRUISED. He wasn't able to read the x rays correctly, because the specialist stated that he should have been able to indicate some sort of debris floating in the knee with x-rays. I have always questioned why he is still employeed with this clinic. Everytime I go to him, he has this way of making you feel dumb about your own diagnosis or what you THINK might be wrong, when you know yourself better than anyone. I definately do not trust his judgement and always try to schedule with other doctors whenever possible. read more

Dr. Andre Chen of Advanced Pain Care in Austin, TX is a summary of all the posted reviews we read before seeing him. Keep in mind, there are probably multiple Dr. Chen's in the Austin area, so make sure to read the reviews of any Dr. Chen w/ a grain of salt. He's not the type of doctor we like to be around (not nice, doesn't seem to really care about the pain, clearly didn't read his file to see what's causing the pain, incredibly biased saying "all opioids end in addiction or DUI") Dr. Chen clearly thinks highly of himself and likes to control other peoples' lives b/c he know he has the power to do so. He likes to play mind games and get a reaction out of you. He did a complete 180 in our appointment. We were talking about a plan that we were all comfortable and then out of no where, he took a turn and said he's going to "follow his gut" b/c he doesn't think we belong there. He opened the door, said a different plan than we were discussing before, didn't listen to any of our questions, and walked out. This was the worst physical exam I have ever received. 1. I came for a routine check-up, and none of my vitals were checked nor was I asked if I needed any refills on my medications. It was a 10 minute appointment if that, and I could have felt better about my health by perusing WebMD! 2. I metioned that I was experiencing shooting pains in my chest and that it was becoming quite detrimental to everyday activities. Certain movements caused me to freeze in pain, and I would struggle to breath, talk, and even move. I literally had to lie down and wait for it to pass. I couldn't figure out what was causing this to happen on my own and was looking for a doctor's advice. Dr. Chen took out his iPad to calculate my risk for heart disease and stated that at my age my risk was so minimal it was surely nothing. I'm sorry, but if I am telling you that I am experiencing pain in the area of my heart on a regular basis, more thought should go into it then entering calcuations into an iPad app. 3. After I kept probing the situation looking for answers, he threw me some prilosec and said that would cure the problem and again told me it was nothing. After taking these pills for 2 months, the pains were not going away. I later learned that I had costochondritis, which was an area Dr. Chen never explored nor even thought of. I had been taking Prilosec for no reason for 2 months and it didn't even fix the problem! 4. Dr. Chen then charged me as a new patient, thus resulting in my insurance carrier not covering the visit even though I had been to several doctor's within Austin Diagnostic Clinic. I had also made it clear that I had made the appointment as a yearly physical exam, and my other doctor was unavailable for the dates I was available for a visit. 5. If something had been serioulsy wrong with me, I would not have known, because Dr. Chen did not ask any questions as to why I was having chest pains or try to resolve the matter. He brushed it off by saying I was an active 25 year old female and it wasn't anything. I was then left to research the problem on my own and figure out what was happening and determine how I was going to fix it. Frankly, Dr. Chen did nothing to assure me that I was in healthy condition, which is the whole purpose of a physical exam. I am glad I was pumping medicine into my system for 2 months that my body did not need. read more

I love Dr Andre Chen, a San Francisco transplant who is a great family practice doc. He's smart, insightful, and understands that people have busy lives . He asks all the right questions, and wants to understand how the medical issue is affected by lifestyle. If you're looking for someone to console you and say it's not your fault, go somewhere else. We love dr. Chen. My whole family goes to him once I discovered how efficient and good he is. He is not everybody's doctor though. Yes, he does not sugar-coat things. Time is money for me and so is for him. The good news is that I don't need any sugar-coating. I need facts and fast. He is good at that. If something is unimportant he is is treating it as such. However, if something calls for more questions, he is really trying to understand what is going on with total disregard for the fact that it should have been a short visit. Staff is great. He is very informative and doesn't believe in unnecessary tests. Many Dr.'s are quick to recommend injections and surgeries while Dr. Chen takes a conservative approach. He has been my doctor for many years. He takes the time to talk with his patients and provides helpful medical information.

Dr Chen is fine if you have something minor...a cold, a stomach ache, etc. But I went in with pain/aches in both elbows and also had an issue with suddenly gaining weight in spite of regular exercise and eating right. He never even examined my elbows and basically called me a liar about exercising. He said, and I quote, " I have been doing this for a long time and if you were exercising you would not be gaining weight". He said I was depressed and gave me a prescription for anti-depressants. I argued that I was not depressed, but he said I was. I just grabbed the paper and left. Made an appt with another doctor. Turns out I had a pinched nerve on one elbow and tennis elbow on the other. (Painted the house a week earlier). And the weight gain was due to menopausal issues. read more

All my experiences with Dr Chen have been excellent. Usually can get a same day appointment. Never kept waiting more than 5 minutes. He is to the point, efficient, and no sugar coatings, but never rushed. The medical discussions are to-way dialogs (not lectures) and also covered to the right level of informative and background information. Once needed a referral for surgery and his recommended doctor did an awesome job. Have been with Dr Chen for 12 years and no plans to switch GP. read more

i wish there was a negative star rating. this guy knows nothing about me.... i had never had a panic attack.... i don't drink or do drugs or smoke.... and i went in because i couldn't get into my dr that day when i had a "panick attack".... whatever it was it left me blacked out not breathing i thought i was dying.. so my friend recomended him to me because he takes same day patients.... yes he was fast but now i see why.... he is so abrupt and rude and horrible bed side manners..... i was crying because i was really scared... he walked in wrote me some rx for xanax and prozac and freaked out and said come back when you're not crying.... and left the room..... im not even kidding.... so i did go back to my regular dr and told her what had happened and so she prescribed me xanax and prozac..... so i went back to pre made appointment with dr chen because ill ask a million doctors if i want to if they know how to solve SI joint issues... no one has solved mine yet and i was a champion gymnast and it sucks not to be able to walk... so obviously i want to resolve this.... i walked in.... 16 lbs lighter... blood pressure good... in a happy mood because what i had been doing was starting to work and i was getting healthier.... he asks.....did you get xanax from someone else..... i knew there was one cross over time but it wasn't intentional..... my dr wasn't available.... nor did he ask because he immediately left the room when he saw me cry..... so he starts in calling me a pill shopper a criminal a felon and he doesn't see liars and criminals... i had just told him i had my emotional stuff sorted ... i wasn't even there for that... i was there to talk about weight management and si joint issue.....i'm trying to resolve my issues and get back to a happy left and he threatened to call the police on me and escorted me out of the office..... i was doing so much better he actually caused me to have a panic attack in my car driving on the way home because i couldn't believe how unprofessional and rude this man was..... he doesn't know anything about me... my past....my business... to start calling me a felon and criminal..... i handle very high volume retirement accounts... millions of dollars... i have a high stress job.... and i have had some bad things happen in the last few years but im trying to get it together.... i have never been so insulted..... just because he has issues with the board and licensing and junkiees....... he should not project his issues onto his patients who are trying to get well...... he should be out of busines..... i would sue him but i won't give him that energy...... awful .... horrible experience read more
