With the sad news this past year of the closing of some longstanding Chinese restaurants here in town, newcomer Chef Wang changes it up introducing dishes from different Chinese cuisines. What an awesome surprise Chef Wang was for me. Food 5/5: I was lucky enough to come here with a big group of friends and got to sample many of their exquisite dishes. What stood out to me was their stews which had rich deep flavors that I'm not that use to since I'm used to going to Cantonese style Chinese Restaurants. Chef Wang's Northeastern style dishes had ingredients like pickled vegetables, cabbage, cumin, braised tofu, potatoes, a variety of wild mushrooms, and more. Chef Wang also offers Sichuan items on its vast multi-page menu of over a hundred dishes. For those patrons who are used to the different flavors of Northeastern or Sichuan Chinese Cuisine, they have a page of "Chinese American" items, which include the popular Western dish General Tso's Chicken. My personal favorite dishes that I enjoyed are the Grilled Chicken Pot, Dong-Bei Stew, and Cabbage and Pork Dumplings. Atmosphere/Vibe 3/5: Interior is a very traditional looking Chinese restaurant to me. Not a lot of frills here; it's about the food here. There is a cold preserved food area where you can order take-out. Plenty of parking is available. Prices 5/5: Prices are good because the portions are generous. Service/Cleanliness 5/5: People taking the orders were friendly and were willing to answer any questions. Food was prepared quickly and we had short waits several times I went. The tables and restaurant are clean and inviting. Tip: Be adventurous and try something different! read more

We ordered take out from Chef Wang's for our Christmas Eve dinner and we loved it. We ordered fish potstickers, chicken chow mein, onion pancakes, fish flavored eggplant, soup dumplings, spicy fried shrimp and beef and broccoli. We had trouble ordering online and noticed that many dishes were not available via online ordering so we ended up calling our order in. We were wanting the food at 6:30p, but we said 6p because they said they were running behind. We arrived around 6:15p and our food was waiting for us. Try some of the Signature Dishes. They're very authentic and give you a true taste of Northern Chinese cuisine. There are certainly some exotic items but not everything is "weird". The Hunan style stir fly pork is super flavorful and SPICY! I'm a wuss so I picked out all the dried and fresh chilis and mix a bunch of rice to tame the heat. The Grilled beef with house special sauce is more like stew beef. Tender and yummy. Dong Bei cold noodles are very refreshing and must for hot days. read more

This is not your standard Americanized Chinese restaurant. Definitely not a orange chicken and beef broccoli kind of place. This is more like the kind of authentic Chinese food I grew up eating! I finally decided to try Chef Wang on a night that I was craving green onion pancakes and Taiwanese beef noodle soup. I live on the west side and Chef Wang's came up on Yelp when I searched "green onion pancakes" so after checking out the reviews my husband and I decided to give it a chance. We were not disappointed! I was immediately excited by the fact that they had Xiaolongbao! Soup dumplings are hard to come by in Tucson! I think on their menu they called it "small steamed bun - 10 pc." We got an order of those, the green onion pancakes I'd been craving, the spicy beef noodle soup, and the salt and pepper ribs, all family style. We also got a pitcher of beer. Just re-capping everything we ordered is making my mouth water all over again! Both the green onion pancakes and the spicy beef noodle were *exactly* what I was craving. So flavorful! When my husband and I bit into the ribs, all we could say for a good minute was, "Wow!" The ribs were perfectly salted. My husband couldn't stop raving about them! My only "complaints" are that I wish they had given me a dipping sauce with my green onion pancakes, and that I wish there had been more bok choy in the spicy beef noodle. The latter is more of a personal problem though as I just love a lot of bok choy and typically need to order "extra" veggies anyways. Service is standard for any good, non-American restaurant. It's similar to how some people say the hole-in-the-wall restaurants typically have the best food. In my experience the trade off is usually giving up an attentive server for the most amazing, authentic food. I'm 100% down for that trade-off and typically if I sit down and I realize service is that way, I have my strategy locked and loaded. I keep a mental list of everything I might need in the future and ask for it all at once. Napkins, sauces, extra drinks before we need them, and if there's something I think I'm forgetting a polite "I think that was it but can you please come check back in 10 minutes?" usually suffices! I think during our visit we were checked on a total of 4 ish times from start to finish, but I was too enamored by our delicious food to need anything but space anyways. One of the best Szechuan restaurants in Tucson. The food is always delicious and consistent, I don't think there's a dish that I wouldn't recommend. I enjoy that all the servers help each other, although the young ladies sometimes woo over the college boys who come in for dinner but it's so cute lol. read more

We came here because I was craving chow mein and the reviews for the lo mein here were off the charts. I saw 4 awesome reviews for the lo mein and that made us come. Unfortunately, it wasn't the best. Just off the bat, the menu is hard to read. The menu doesn't give descriptive information regarding what is in each dish. It gives brief synopsis but it doesn't explain the veggies and especially that they come with rice. A lot of the dishes were very tradition as well, with odd meats and things that most Americans would not be familiar with. This also made me think the food would be authentic be amazing. We started with the pot stickers. They didn't say on the menu what kind they were but they were pork. They gave us a sweet and sour sauce that was okay, but it wasn't as good as a plum sauce that was not offered. They also gave us just a side of soy that was pretty salty. The pot stickers were okay, but only crispy on one side. I had the lo mein and although it was good, it was super greasy and I think they bulk cook their meat and then just mix it with whatever dish. It did come with shrimp, chicken and beef. I say this because my noddles were warm but the meat was cold. This is probably a health violation. I ate it, but it was off putting. My boyfriend had some pot dish they had that came with 5 different meats. It was crab, shrimp, beef, chicken and something else. He said everything was good but unfortunately he ate a piece of the black cloud ear fungus first that he said was absolutely disgusting and he couldn't eat anything after. The service was terrible. They were perhaps very understaffed only two service and four restaurant. We received my wife's dish cold but fairly quickly. Clearly the Sesame chicken was premade and heated. It took until she was totally finished eating before i got my dish. Amount of food was plentiful for the price and my dish was fresh and tasty, but the server had no time to spend on answering questions or helping the customer select a dish. In addition we had to stand at the front and wait several minutes before we were taken to a table, I would not go back a second time. read more

Descent authentic Chinese food, this is my go to place in Tucson; I like the twice cooked pork, and spicy diced chicken

I have many many countless good things to say about this restaurant. But I want to explain it as simply as I can. I am the son a great head chef from Westlake Village California the Mediterranio. I have eaten many many meals at incredibly good restaurants all around the world, Los angles and so forth. My family is all chefs and I have a huge appreciation for a well cooked meal. This restaurant is not like the restaurants in LA, In Los Angeles you get 1 big name chef and a lot of helpers and only a few dishes directly made by that chef are incredible, more often then not most of the menu is terrible, and only a few things are good. With this Chinese Restaurant every single dish gets the love and attention it deserves and the hard labor shows every time. Not one single dish at this restaurant is any less then perfect and I stand by that statement! This is one restaurant out of thousands I have been too that deserves 5 stars! I highly encourage everyone who reads this review to check out this restaurant and I am certain you will not be disappointed. We ordered a lot of food! Be aware that their portions are pretty large and can feed two people for two meals. We got the dumplings and crab puff with House Lo Mein and Mongolian Beef. We are for sure going to have another meal out of this amount of food. The only thing I was disappointed about is that we had to pay extra for white rice. However, you obviously can't have Chinese without rice so we got it anyways. Over all experience was good. Impressions of what we ordered: -Honey walnut shrimp-the shrimp were huge, and they didn't over-bread it. My favorite Chinese restaurant in Tucson. Be adventurous! Get the traditional dishes. Get the cold plate. My favorites when they have them are Woodear mushroom, potato, and peanuts with celery. My husband's favorite dish is the Guo Bao Pork, thin ribbons of fried pork with a slightly sweet sauce. I loved the Hunan style scrambled egg with woodear mushroom. Chef Wang's is another good Tucson Restaurant. They have a great menu and the servers are friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered orange chicken which was good, large pieces of fried chicken coated in a flavorful sauce that wasn't overly sauced. We also ordered beef chow fun (rice noodles) which pushed my review to 5 stars. Beef chow fun is one of our usual favorites. I also like to see how different restaurants prepare it. Chef Wang's was excellent. In the past few months I've ordered this at two other restaurants that buried theirs in onions, like more onions than noodles. Chef Wang's was perfectly balanced. We finally got to Chef Wangs after failing to find any authentic Chinese in Oro Valley. Read the reviews and the only thing to be said is that locals from Tucson who think this place is quality have obviously never had real authentic delicious Chinese food anywhere else. We ordered the sesame chicken which was dry with no sauce. It typically has a rich brown sesame sauce. This was basically chicken nuggets with a little duck sauce poured on top. The lo mein noodles were soft and mushy. No chew and little flavor. The hot and sour soup, which is what others have raved about was just decent with a ton of black pepper. We had such high hopes. There is no good Chinese food in this city. I would love to be proven wrong. read more

On Chinese New Year, my partner-in-dine and I made an imperial decree to celebrate the Year of the Rat with a feast fit for an emperor and an empress. We had been to Chef Wang once before and the experience left us with memories of colorful dishes, savory aromas and happy tummies. Therefore, without an ounce of hesitation, we decided to head over to Chef Wang to mark this auspicious day. We got there before 5:00 p.m. and were seated immediately. It was actually a good decision since the place quickly filled up after that. We ordered a large bowl of Hot and Sour soup, Lamb Skewers, General Tso's Chicken and Fried Croaker. It's our family tradition back home to have a whole fish on Chinese New Year's Day (for good fortune in the new year) and for this reason, I got the Fried Croaker. What I got was not one, but two whole fish cooked with peppers, onions and a vinegary soy sauce. It was amazing! The Hot & Sour soup was full of vegetables and tofu. It was heavenly! The lamb was seasoned well and tender. The General Tso's Chicken had a thick, sweet sauce. We give it five clucks! We had so much outstanding food that we could hardly stand at the end (nor did we want to). Chef Wang serves authentic, delicious Chinese food. We can't wait to be back. read more

I have come here a couple times usually with one other person, and have always ordered the same thing - the Braised pork in brown sauce which I LOVE. But I never really explored the rest of the menu, and I finally got the chance to when I went with a group of 6 - and I promise that a group meal is the BEST way to experience what Chef Wang has to offer! We were seated at a round table that had a spinning dish ("lazy Susan") on top - and all of our orders were placed on top of it so we could spin it and grab bites from everything that we each ordered. We were served really quickly. It was awesome sharing the food and getting to try to many different things this way, and each item we ordered was EXCELLENT. I was especially impressed with the grilled eggplant - the sauce was delicious and the eggplant was perfectly cooked and plated so beautifully! Everything came with rice which was a huge relief (so many Asian restaurants have been charging high prices for a side of rice)! This was definitely my favorite experience at Chef Wang so far, and eating family style turned it from a good experience into an AMAZING one! My BF and I loved the food and service at Chef Wang. They have an impressive menu. There are so many options that it's almost overwhelming to decide what to order. We had dumplings, spicy orange chicken, and a beef and veggie entrée served with white rice. I have to say, this isn't traditional Chinese food what so ever. It's not the type of place you leave uncomfortably full like the Chinese Buffets. The food is delicious and priced very reasonably for the amount you're served. Their dishes are one kd the most expensive in Tucson but if you're going to charge that much, then the portions better be HUGE. You can't serve less food AND also charge more money at the same time and expect customers to not notice. We used to order from here all the time because we love spicy food. When the mama gives the place her nod of approval, it means this place is legit. The restaurant is a stand alone with parking. Doesn't look like much from the outside but it's clean and nicely decorated on the inside. Service was excellent, especially if you speak Mandarin (sorry not sorry). We really enjoyed their cold appetizers and the sauerkraut fish. The cumin lamb was ok, but I've had better. Would've preferred it to be dry fried, with less oil. read more

We've come to eat here three times and loved the food each time. We mainly stick to the soups which are served in large bowls and easily enough for two people. They come with a large side of white rice. Our favorite thing to eat is the sweet milk buns for desert. They are lightly sweet small rolls that are crispy on the outside and soft inside. They come with a tiny bowl of condensed milk to drip over them. It's my favorite sweet in Tucson right now. All of the portions are surprisingly big and meant to share. We are finally figuring that out after a leaving with boatloads of to go boxes. The staff are friendly and even remembered us last time we went in. Came again for lunch last week, and had a few new things. The cold salad bar was amazing. Your choice of three items for $8.95. We had tofu and fungi, but cannot remember the third item. All were excellent. The clams were amazing, as was the cumin lamb (second time). Chef Wang is one of, if not the most, authentic Chinese restaurants in town.
