Started my search for the best Lomein in Texas and it has brought me here. Small Chinese restaurant inside the tunnels with a view of the hotel and pavilion building. Ordered a Orange Chicken with fried rice and vegetable lomein... I was questioned why I wanted to order both..? (" Ordered the orange chicken Incase the lomein was un-edible. ") Well here's the verdict. The lomein is pretty good. It's not the best, but compared to others in walking distance it's actually pretty good. The orange chicken is really good, not so much as sweet but has a pretty good spice level to it. White meat chicken and not overly crispy. The fried rice was a disappointment, you can't even call it fried rice. it was more or less just a cooked brown ish rice. The egg roll is also just okay and not great. read more

One of my favorite workweek, lunch spots in downtown Dallas and a great spot for fast, cheap, delicious Chinese food. Now, reading some of the other reviews, apparently some expected this to be higher-end dining - This is not that place. This is your standard, small staff, order off the menu, pay and get out of the way, quick order turnaround spot. Order at the counter up front where the line gets long around noon, stand and wait for them to call your dishes name (this is where it would help to have an order number or some better way to identify the order), then grab your plate or to go box, and seat yourself. It's a little crowded in the seating area which can be hard to navigate when you're ready to leave, but overall it's a clean space to dine. Broccoli beef, Shrimp and chicken in Hunan style, and Wang's chicken are three of my favorites. All dishes are well sauced and come with rice (white, brown, or "fried" which is not a vegetable fried rice). Fountain drinks, tea, and water are available and there is a little sauce bar to load up on sweet and sour, spicy mustard, and sriracha sauce. I always enjoy coming here and will continue to keep Chef Wang in the weekly lunch option rotation. read more

I have a confession. I grew up on cheap Chinese food. You know the kind, drowning in sauce and MSG. Well, I may have grown up a little but I still have a weakness for cheap Chinese food but limit that to maybe once a year or less! Chef Wang is no exception. Cash only and a limited menu with daily specials on the chalkboard. It is in an underground plaza area where many of those old restaurants are no longer there. It was rainy and not crowded so we walked right up to order, grabbed our utensils and drinks and found a spot. My hubby got the Chicken Chow Mein, with fried rice, which looked okay but also included broccoli. I got the Broccoli Beef with steamed rice. The beef was tender and I liked dipping it in the hot mustard sauce. The broccoli was perfectly crunchy, not overcooked at all. My rice nice and fluffy. I hadn't been here in so long that I'd forgotten that I usually get the sauce on the side. So much sauce. Still, I ate most of it and liked it. My tongue feeling like it's been over-salted, like a snail that someone poured salt over. That's what makes me suspect MSG- especially since there was not a sign that said no MSG is used. We did get a free fortune cookie out of the deal, regularly $10 each. But, my hubby said it was not crisp at all. So, forgo the fortune cookie, get your sauce on the side and maybe you will be able to make the most out of your visit! read more

This place is your run of the mill Americanized Chinese place. I went here with my team for lunch today, and it was more underwhelming than I expected. I got the broccoli and beef with fried rice, and it was mediocre at best. The broccoli wasn't cleaned properly and still had dirt on it. The rice was hard to chew and wasn't even actual fried rice - they just put soy sauce in it. Would not recommend, just go to the closest Panda Express for Americanized Chinese food where the vegetables are actually cleaned. read more

Working in downtown Dallas, Chef Wang is on our semi-regular rotation (mostly in cooler months, as it is a bit of a walk). As you may have read elsewhere, it is not the kind of place you would casually pass by--it's below street level and in a hallway between several buildings. This place is not much on ambiance or decor--you get in line, order your meal, and mill around waiting for your lunch. You can admire the sole decorative feature--the fish tank. However, it is quick, and the food is filling and made to order. I usually get the Wang's Chicken (sauteed white meat chicken with veggies in a brown sauce), which I order "spicy" (they will customize the spiciness on any dish), which comes with your choice of brown or white rice, and a deep fried chip. $8.95 including tax, and it fills the plate. My colleague got the sesame chicken, which is breaded and fried. It also is a large portion. The two cooks (plus expediter) work behind a divider at a row of woks to make my lunch to my specification. They are usually pretty quick at turning out the food, although beware of unseen takeout orders which can slow you down. There is a drinks dispenser and ample seating. Again, nothing fancy, but a delicious meal. And, it comes out HOT! read more

Chef Wang rocks. It's located downstairs at One Main Place adjacent to to open air plaza that's down below the street. Tip #1- They only take cash. You order your entree at the front counter and make your way down a short line to a pickup window. The "chefs" (not Wang, maybe Chef Martinez) are cooking your food. If you're tall enough, you can watch them do it, but otherwise you just see the tops of their heads. The selection is typical chinese restaurant fair. Sweet & Sour, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Broccoli chicken, etc. I had a combo fried rice and it really was the best fried rice I've had since moving here to TX. The best I've ever had was at a chinese place I worked in during college in Bossier City LA. Yep, Bossier City LA. The fried rice here is close to perfect. Oily enough where the rice doesn't clump together, the rice was PERFECTLY cooked for fried rice--not mushy or starchy, but soft enough where it's just under al dente. The vegetables were cooked al dente (carrots & peas). The shrimp was super fresh. Not a hint of fishy or of that weird ozone taste you get with some shrimp dishes at lesser Chinese restaurants. Tip #2-Ask for your drink in a to-go cup. It doesn't cost any extra and you can top off your beverage before you fight off the Morlocks on your way back to the surface. My coworkers had the Broccoli Chicken and the Orange Chicken. I can't attest to the taste (which they said was very good), but it sure looked good. The place is certainly no nonsense. It's glass fronted with plain white walls. The tables are food court type tables. As far as chiness food downtown dallas goes, this is my favorite place to eat. The Chicken and green bean dish is a favorite of mine and always fresh. I have never had a bad experience here. I also enjoy the cashew chicken. You usually get more than enough to eat, and an take home your leftovers for a late night snack or even eat it the next day for lunch. Wang also has business hours that cater to the building it is housed in, so good luck if you don't work or live downtown. The staff was personable and aimed to please. I enjoyed the food, though I didn't think that it was worth the expedition of frantically searching through plazas and building floors only to arrive with 15 minutes to spare for take-away. If you work or live near Chef Wang, bully for you - this place is pretty good. This review is more or less for those who either live or work in Downtown Dallas. Because otherwise, you likely won't ever eat at Chef Wang. Which to be honest, is pretty unfortunate. Chef Wang is the Chinese Hot Spot that all of your coworkers will claim they found! It's a divey little place which makes it feel a bit more special to the community. The food is prepared as you order it and you can stand by and watch as they plate it if that's your thing. I believe the last time I went there they had started to let people pay via Credit Card so that should help their business some as it was a cash only place before. It gets packed around lunch time so it's best if you make your way over around 11:15-11:30. This will help you ensure that you won't have to wait too long for your food and that you'll have a seat. The prices are pretty fair and the man who owns it is typically the man taking your order. Thus, you can expect great customer service when you're making your order. My only complaint is that the spot needs more seating when you consider how many customers they get. But with that said, it is a dive type of establishment and they do make the best of the space they've got. There are tables outside of the restaurant in the courtyard for outdoor seating. Read This: Chef Wang is an underground establishment, meaning you'll have to enter another building and go underground to reach it. Your two best options would be to enter either the Bank of America building or Thanksgiving Tower. If you don't know which buildings those are, look for either the Bank of America sign for the BOA Building or the Glass Pyramid next to the Thanksgiving Tower. Then proceed underground and the hallway will lead you right by Chef Wang. If you think you may have passed it, look for the court yard surrounded by glass windows. read more

I LOVE CHEF WANG! Their chicken friend rice and egg rolls are hands down the best. Not to mention, the prices are incredible. Granted, they only accept cash, but it is definitely worth it.
