My first time eating at Chef Tony even though many of my friends had recommended it to me in the past. It was fantastic! We had a 1 PM reservation and they seated us around 1:10. Parking is a challenge in the surface lot but if you go into the parking garage, there were plenty of spaces. For tea options you can order jasmine or chrysanthemum. They do like using truffles here and lots of it! We ordered Salty Egg Yolk Lava, Truffle Marinated Chicken, Pea Vines, Green Beans and A Choy sautéed in garlic, chow fun, mushroom tarts, stuffed eggplant, fried squid, shrimp and crabmeat steamed dumplings, soy milk and spareribs. We were given a private VIP room since it was so busy. The room itself was cold but they had space heaters going. It was nice for our party of 8 to have a quiet room. My favorites were the pea vines, the a choy, the dumplings, fried squid and the mushroom tarts. The black buns were a tad bit too sweet for my palate. Chef Tony has really elevated many of the traditional dim sum favorites - maintaining the authenticity of the flavor profile while adding that special touch to make the dish even better. There are tons of dim sum restaurants to try in Richmond, but this is one of those rare ones where you can enjoy traditional favorites (like black bean spare ribs) and more innovative items (like the gold brushed salted soft yolk bun). We did our research and after reading reviews, blogs, watching endless youtube videos, we landed in chef tony for our dim sum experience in Richmond... and yup, our trip to Canada/Vancouver was pretty much just for dim sum, although we were able to take in the other near by attractions. the overall process was easy, we called ahead to make reservations for 10am sunday morning. Arrived earlier, parking was not an issue, however after we left around 11:30, we did noticed that there were not many spots left and huge groups, waiting to get inside Chef Tony. We pretty much ordered enough for 4 people but there were only 2 of us. We have lots of left overs. among the favorite items: Black truffle, pork & shrimp dumplings steamed cuttlefish ink shrimp dumplings - maybe the best dim sum item ever! overall, the place is pretty nice, they have glass dividers between tables and there is a giant screen, with rotating pictures of their favorite items. A trip isn't complete without some dim sum in Richmond! We tried to come here on Saturday around noon and they were not taking any walk ins at that point. So on Sunday, I called around 10 to get a table and sure enough, we were to get a reservation in 30 minutes. Overall the dim sum had a different spin to the normal ones, so we ordered a bunch of stuff to try. I would recommend the truffle siu mai (you can really taste the truffle and it worked well with the siu mai) and squid ink haw gau (the skin texture was great and the squid ink gave it an extra oomph in seafood flavor). The ones that were okay were the eel pastry (only because the pastry was so big and made it a bit dry), the dumpling in sauce (it was a little bland), and the abalone sauced eggplant with fish cake (nothing particularly great or bad about it). I don't recommend the chicken feet (it wasn't marinated well enough and it was very dry), and the pork spare ribs (it had a taste to it that was not pleasant). Overall good service and we were in out in less than an hour. Would come back again! read more

Traveling the country in search of dim sum restaurants I decided to go international. Having never been to Vancouver I came to this restaurant on a Sunday and found people lined up outside right at 10 when the doors open. Very rarely have I seen people lined up outside a dim sum restaurant except in the busiest chinatowns. The menu was pretty extensive and we ordered several dishes all of which were excellent. Literally amazing I am glad I came even though reviews are mixed. It is more on the pricey side for dim sum but such a unique experience for real!! The flavors in the dim sum are just outstanding and a great modern take on dim sum. I had the chicken feet because it's a must order for me anywhere I go- and it doesn't come with peanuts but it is good. Just not mindblowing. I would recommend the other items on the menu! I'm always a traditionalist when it comes to dim sum but this blew my mind! The shrimp is so fresh from the har gow and the scallop and bean curd rice roll was so flavorful and I never tried this in my entire life. Chef tony definitely makes out of the box ideas like making a red roll of the oil stick rice roll. The winner of their menu is definitely the crispy spring roll with truffle. The truffle tasted so fresh like it wasn't store bought or fake but it tasted so good with the shrimp which was hefty and large in the spring roll. I came here to Chef Tony for dinner. I would say this is more of an upscale version of dim sum. If you come here, you'll have to get the marinated chicken with truffle. It reminds me so much of my mom's cold ginger chicken, but with a twist of black truffle. I find myself thinking of this dish because it was just that delicious! As always, you'll have to get the roasted duck. Paired with the plum sauce, fresh cucumber slices, and the warm dough wrap is chef's kiss. The only downside is the dinner menu is limited. This is a very good restaurant specially the Dim Sum, ambience is very traditional for a high end Chinese restaurant. Food is very tasteful and beautifully cooked and arranged. Was lucky to get a table since there were only two of us. I will make a reservation next time when I have a larger group. A few things that I didn't give 5 stars, I travel a great deal and these are my must expects. Server doesn't bring or offer side condiments, I had a jook which I like pepper with, the dumplings I like a little soy sauce and hot oil. Lastly for the establishment, bathroom was not as nice for a restaurant of this stature. The fixtures were not maintained, multiple tarnished exposed pipes, could be a bit more neater. Had great reviews, when we got in we saw HK celebrity photos with the chef posted along the wall inside. We looked at the menu and we're so shocked by the prices, and some of the food tasted mediocre or bland. We did the special and got "half"a Peking duck, definitely scammed us there. We got 6 small slices with barely any meat. I'm sure they gave us only 1/3 of the portion. They gave us 6 because we had 6 people. The mushroom beef was pretty tender and flavorful, portion was a bit on the smaller size. Lettuce wrap was good, most places give you more lettuce, but I feel like this place didn't give us enough. The pork chop thing sucked, you see the grease glistening in the photo. We ordered the beef chow fun, did not have enough wok hei and lacked flavor as well. Mainly just coated in grease. We told a friend that lives in Vancouver we are here and it sucked. She tells us locals don't go there because they are expensive and a tourist trap. ‍ she didn't tell us before we went. We were hoping to go to Kirin on our last weekend trip to Richmond, but they were fully booked for the entire day (we arrived there at like 10 am) so I ended up calling Chef Tony and they had a table open for us by the time we got there so we opted here instead. We ordered the traditional dim sum dishes like the har gow, siu mai, as well as their bbq pork buns and lava yolk buns and rice rolls. This spot does a more modern twist in that the har gow has a more mushroom taste and the siu mai has black truffles. While the traditional items were good, I do prefer more traditional dim sum flavors and textures. The best item here though were the red rice rolls with youtiao and shrimp. I was debating on what dim sum place to try as our first meal in BC. I had some recommendations from friends and Yelp but ultimately, I chose this restaurant for the crazy modern Asian fusion in dim sum! The table next to us had a party of four, and they ordered only 5-6 dishes compared to us LMAO (eavesdropped on their total whoops). i came here with a group of 6 on a sunday around 1 pm. we made a reservation the day before. we were given a paper menu to order on. they leave an itemized list of what we ordered at the table and cross things off as they come. i liked that we were each given 2 chopsticks - we used one as a "shared" chopstick for grabbing food and one as a "personal" chopstick for eating our own food. most of the food was pretty good, pretty standard for a dim sum place. the salted egg was really salty, so i wouldn't recommend getting anything with salted egg unless you're genuinely a fan of it. the only dish i didn't really like was the pork & salty egg yolk sticky rice dumpling but that's probably more of a personal preference (not a big fan of salted egg). it also didn't seem like they had simple versions of some dim sum staples like siu mai and shrimp dumplings - it took a bit of effort to find those on the menu. overall a solid place for dim sum, although not really standout and on the pricier end. It's not the traditional dim sum that you would expect. They are a little fancier and more modern. You get a paper and you check on the menu what you want and then give it to them. The food will then start to come out. I like that they have a tv screen that shows you what some items look like since there's no pics on the menu. This place rocks on many fronts including some unique dim sum dishes that work off the traditional but yet adds some twists of their own. The siu mai with black truffle is one of them and the truffle provides an added taste that you wouldn't expect and in a good way. The shrimp and Matsutake dumpling were good but we really liked the triangle shaped Shrimp, Crabmeat and Matsutake dumpling that also had small bits of celery that added a nice crunchy texture. The Fish paste stuffed eggplant was OK but lacked a bit of flavor. Our fav was the Meat and seafood loaf in bean curd sheet we also tried something new which was the Shrimp nori & pineapple fried spring roll that were crunchy and not too oily. The chicken feet which I don't eat were good but I wasn't the judge of that and relied on my friends. You might think the shrimp Chong fun couldn't be different from one restaurant to another but don't get me wrong theirs was good. Lastly put an order of the Egg white custard tart on the must have for dessert! The white egg has a very subtle flavor and melts in your mouth and the crust is so flaky and light. The service is no different from any other eatery and just have some patience as this place gets busy at peak lunch hour time. This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Richmond, and not only because of the food quality, but also their service. This year, we decided to try their kind crab meal for the birthday of my MIL. We were lucky that there was two king crabs left when we arrived, and we picked a smaller one, still around 9 lbs. we asked for two ways cooking which is the most common style. One way is to braise the legs with mince garlic and green onion, and the other way is to stir fry with ginger and green onion. They used very fresh ingredient for all the dish, most importantly, they don't use any MSG! This is also one of the reasons I like this restaurant. They quality control every dish, which enhanced your dining experience. The king crab legs were cooked just the right temperature, meat was tender and juicy. Everyone was very pleased with the meal, we added some fried rice to go with it, but the king crab itself was enough for three adults. Coming from Seattle, everyone told me Richmond had much better Dim Sum and after a meal at Chef Tony's, I couldn't agree more. What you can expect: - really good quality dim sum. Like you can taste the difference between here and elsewhere. - portions are slightly bigger (I'm use to 4 shumai or 3 buns in each order but many dishes they had +1 to what I've generally seen. The mini pork ribs came in a bigger plate than usual as well) - Truffles make everything better. My favorite was for sure the truffle shumai. You can totally taste the elevation. - Pricing is so totally reasonable. Like, I was a bit blown away - I was with a group of 10 and stuffed our bellies full full (like we were forcing ourselves to not waste food at the end) and so we took bets on how much the bill would be...... everyone's guesses were way above!! Felt a bit pushed aside because we didn't have reservations. Gruff waiter took my tea order. Then it was a 15 min wait for someone to acknowledge us. After we put our order in, the waiter came back and insisted to add to our order of 3 dishes how gao,ham sui gok and sticky rice wrap. We added meatballs w watercress. Actually, we were conducting a dim sum-taste test against the same dishes at Golden Paramount having eaten the same dishes 1/2 hr prior. Here's our take: How gao at CT was odd cause they had truffle oil. So we liked GP's version Ham sui gok - winner CT. FRESHLY fried. Thought the light color crust was uncooked but now I realize all the ham sui goks I've had in past had been refried for that brown oily crust! Lotus wrapped sticky rice was 4.5 out of 5. Fragrant aroma when unpeeled with salty egg and mushrooms w sticky rice. The 1/2 pt off is because rice was not sticky enough. Fell apart when scooped up with my chopsticks. All in all, the winner is Uncle Tony's despite the rude greeting and service. Dirty dishes were snatched away while my chopsticks were in my mouth. Good food, come if you dare. read more

We accidentally discovered this restaurant when looking for a phone card (our cellphone did not work after crossing into our neighbor- Canada). It is in an older outdoor shopping center which was not that vibrant. In fact a few restaurants in that area that we checked out were closed. To our surprise, this restaurant was quite full when we checked in. Had to wait about 15 minutes to get a table. The menu was extensive and includes dishes that we do not see in a normal Chinese restaurant. Prices were on the high side, but when we tasted the offerings we absolutely had no complaints on the prices. For lunch, we chose to have their dim sum offerings. They were made with fresh and high quality ingredients. The chef made them into beautiful and delicious dishes. So creative, too. IMHO, they were at the level of many of the dim sum dishes we have tasted in Asia; if not better. Service was at the level of a busy Chinese restaurant. Efficient but not overly attentive. Yes a bit pricey, but well worth it. read more

I came here for lunch during COVID - very pleased to see that the tables were all spread out to social distance properly. It was my first time trying this place out after being recommended by multiple people. The dim sum was interesting, but nothing too special. A lot of the items were on the pricier side (over $7), but I felt that the taste was decent and some were items you can probably get elsewhere for cheaper. I liked the fried durian balls; the outer was very chewy and there was a concentrated durian paste in the middle. The siu mai and sticky rice was pretty standard; the only difference with the siu mai is that it has truffle on top (but the taste was not super strong). The steamed bun with salty egg yolk lava is great for those who like a really runny yolk in the middle. I have to give them props that they were still warm inside even though we waited until the end to eat them! I think it's worth a try, but for the price point, I think that it would be more worth it to try the "interesting" items rather than the more conventional dim sum, as their taste was just standard/average. read more

Dim sum is canada has become such a thing for me and my family whenever we visit Richmond. The food was absolutely delicious. The service was meh but I mean come on, they're freaking busy. I get it. This place seems to specialize in a lot of truffle flavors. I almost felt like all my dim sum items had truffle or was infused with truffle, it was not a bad thing but I think I got tried of eating so much of it (who am I? LOL). There are so many variety here... all very elevated from your push cart dim sum joints. Everything is made to order. You are given a list and you check off items you want to order and they bring it to your table. This is definitely one of my top dim sum choices in Richmond. One of the best dim sum in town!! Rice rolls are on point and they give generous amount of shrimp in rice rolls! Also I tried their carrot cake for the first time and love how they have more radish then flour! More ingredients than many other places definitely. When in Rome...and when in Vancouver, one must eat Dim Sum. So eat Dim Sum we did, and I'm glad we got some at Chef Tony. We definitely enjoyed some of the dishes more than others, but overall I really appreciated the inventiveness that Chef Tony brings to such a staple dining experience like dim sum. Some faves: Lo mai gai- really well-executed, with plenty of filling and perfectly cooked sticky rice. Truffle chicken- I think most of the flavor here is coming from truffle oil, but the (very strong) truffle flavor definitely complements chicken surprisingly well. Also, the chicken itself is cooked perfectly. Honeycomb tripe- great texture. Tender with just the right amount of chew. Dumpling in pumpkin puree- very light and clean-tasting dish. Service wasn't bad by dim sum standards and my parents appreciated the cleanliness of the place. Pretty great experience all around! read more

Food was great but service was so horrible! The greeter was beyond disrespectful, she didn't even answer us when she I told her that we have a reservation, she just looked at her clip board and ignored me. The food was good, the dim sums were big and we ordered the truffle ones that really tasted like truffle. The other dimsums were just okay. I mean I wouldn't go back. The parking was hard for sure, like you have to fight for parking here most especially during lunch time. Over all yeah the food was good but it also has to be with great service because it's an overall experience. read more

I have had many visits to Canada in search of the best Dim Sum they have to offer and more often than not, I'm always pulled to Richmond as there never disappoint. Having visiting Chef Tony - the first thing I like is that, you don't have to speak Cantonese or Mandarin for the folks assisting to understand you, which is very helpful when calling in to book a table or asking for assistance for needs. The second thing is their speed and efficiency of serving clients and delivery of food. I do however miss the old days of carts being pushed and eating with my eyes before my mouth. Overall though - Chef Tony serves up very 'clean' tasting dim sum dishes. I can't say anything necessarily blew me away from their competitors but the flavors and textures was very clean. In no way a bad thing but almost too clean. Not sure how to describe it verbally but if I had to... it's like craving a burger and eating a nice greasy burger that hits the spot versus eating In-And-Out burgers, which is still a burger but a very clean tasting one. It may fancy the pallettes of many but not others. Maybe i'm just used to old dirty dim sum but in a way it's a nostalgic flavor profile that i do prefer. read more

Shrimp items are cooked perfectly and have a nice pop to them. Their fried squids came out fresh, perfectly seasoned and were not over cooked! The salted egg yolk buns for dessert were AMAZING!
