It's always a pleasant surprise to discover things in unlikely places, like an excellent 东北菜餐厅 (Northeastern Chinese cuisine restaurant) in Lansing, Michigan. My wife and I ate here for the first time tonight and tried their 大丰收 (called 一锅出 or "everything in one pot"), a dish with ribs, potatoes, carrots, green beans, pumpkin, corn, and buns. It was very authentic Northeastern Chinese cuisine. Indeed, after chatting with the staff it turns out their family is from the same province that my wife is (and where we lived in the summers during non COVID times). The chef knows what he is doing -- very professional, not just some dude who showed up to help out in the kitchen. The menu prices look steep at first until you see the size of the dishes. It's a huge amount of food. So the final bill for us (with tip) was $44, and we had leftovers to take home. By the way, I saw a couple reviews complaining about inattentive service, but that might be a misunderstanding. Another way this restaurant is authentic is the waiter never bothers you or even asks how the food is (just like in China). But if you need something, make some noise or wave and you'll have good service at that time. We did.

Authentic Chinese food. This isn't the americanized Chinese food that you find in many other restaurants. Delicious and oily. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Giant trays were for the fish and spicy chicken.

A budget Chinese food place located near MSU campus. Funny the restaurant was named "Hong Kong"…read morebecause the theme of the cuisine is definitely Szechuan/Sichuan, quite different from the Cantonese style cuisine of Hong Kong, while the actual dishes tasted like Szechuan cuisine with reduced hotness and a bit more Cantonese details. Spicy cold plate chicken: very tender chicken slices with not too hot sauces. Could use a bit more sesame. Fish slices with preserved vegetable soup broth: Soup broth was rich with savory and sour taste of vegetables. Fish slices were a bit too thick and slightly mushy; might want to switch to another type of fish with firmer texture. Nevertheless, this dish is a bargain as it contains both a protein and a broth base (also with some rice noodles). Szechuan-style eggplants: standard. Sauce was too thick for my taste. Stir-fried spicy string beans: standard, very generous portion of minced pork and garlic adds a lot of flavor

But a friend had recommended it so we were willing to give it a try. Overall a great Chinese food experience. The menu says it's a Sichuan restaurant. And they had Sichuan dishes plus the "American" Chinese dishes you'd expect. I see they also do dim sum but we didn't try that. They have a ton of vegetarian options! The server told us that they have been open since about 2011 and they used to only have traditional Sichuan food. Their primary customer base was international students who wanted authentic Chinese food like they had at home. But after Covid there were few international students from China in town and their business was struggling, so they expanded the menu to appeal to American tastes. As a result, the menu is huge! And you can choose between authentic Chinese or American style. We tried 2 dishes and enjoyed them both. We will definitely return and try some others. It's not a fancy restaurant but there are comfortable seats for 2 and big round tables with turntables for parties of 10 who want to share dishes. The staff is a very nice and helpful family. And they could really use some more customers! Carry out or dine in.

I don't understand why it's so empty but I guess the price per portion could turn people off but it's authentic and delicious so I'd give it my stamp of approval.
