I loved this place! It was like a cheaper, tastier Genova! If you order on Snackpass, you get 10% off your first order. Got the build your own with the Dutch Crunch and turkey! The bread is on the harder side but the texture and CRUNCH are unbeatable. The ingredients were fresh and spayed out near the counter. Pick up was chill and the staff are super friendly! Dubs overall.

Super quick service, the gentleman who made was friendly and nice. The sourdough bread was so good, chewy shell and soft inside but not crunchy which is exactly how I like it. So yummy! Not a lot of space to sit, but since it's kind of underground I just took mine to go anyways.

i just got a panini from here, and it's the best sandwich i've had in berkeley! the price is so good, and if you order off snackpass for the first time, you can get 10% off! chicken pesto focaccia - everything about this sandwich is so good. the bread has a garlicky taste, there is a good amount of pesto and chicken, and it's toasted to perfection! my friends did the "make your own sandwich" and they loved it too! this place is so affordable and delicious.

Great spot for a cheap, convenient meal! They have a wide variety of bread and meats for you to construct your sandwich. The food isn't too special imo--just a pretty basic sandwich, but they are solid sandwiches and although you won't get a sandwich this cheap elsewhere, they don't skimp on the size. I do wish they were open a bit later for if I want a quick dinner.

I've ordered the chicken pesto here before and liked it, but this time it was very disappointing. The cheese was not melted, and everything was lukewarm. The "chicken breast" was shredded chicken breast meat, and had a watery texture and flavor such that I suspect it was canned, unlike the intact cooked chicken breast I used to appreciate from this place. The pesto sauce is nearly white, and is mostly mayonnaise. Overall experience was like a room-temperature pesto-flavored chicken salad sandwich... The prices are still reasonable but the quality seems to have fallen off. Hopefully they were having a bad day and this is not the actual state of their chicken pesto.

Wanted to see what the cheese n stuff hype was about, so I decided to check this place out for lunch. Ordered the chicken pesto sandwich and thought it was solid. However for 10 dollars I thought the portions were pretty small. The sandwich was pretty thin and there was not much filling. Pesto and Dutch crunch bread was good, but the chicken was bland and lacked seasoning. Probably won't come back, but I'd suggest not ordering through Snackpass since it seems they don't keep an eye out on orders through there.

The definition of a local's favorite! This hole-in-the-wall, hidden in an alleyway, has delicious, thick sandwiches for a cheap price. The owner, Sam, knows familiar faces by name. He's so funny and personable, and I look forward to seeing him every time. The sandwiches are so large and tasty for such a cheap price (less than $7 a sandwich!). The roast beef is a favorite of mine, especially with the works; there are so many vegetables included as well. The sourdough bread has great texture and taste. I dearly miss here, and hope the best for them, and that they survived the pandemic, as this place is near and dear to many students and locals.

This place surprised me. It's very hidden in a small mini shopping centre that is still locked in the 1970s. To the eye the place look very vintage to the colours to the photos and memorabilia hanging on the wall. Everything is very well organised despite having an old look. The service is a bit slow but it's worth it. They're very nice and always willing you to make you food without hesitation. At times they may get hit hard with a rush, also the bread goes out fast here. My favourite is the Dutch crunch The food looks very fresh and updated. I get the veggie sandwich with everything. It's a bit too strong in the mustard side of things but I feel mustard id excessively added in order to mask the flavour of the veggies. The feta cheese in the sandwich, it compliments everything else. It's a bit strong but not overly overshadowing. Crisps and a plethora of drinks are available as well. Overall, very good quality. Don't let the vintages vibes fool you too much.

Cheese 'N' Stuff is probably my favorite sandwich shop in Berkeley. It is a bit hidden but that makes it even more of a treasure. They are super consistent with their food. Everything tastes fresh and they are never skimpy with portions. The dutch crunch bread has got to be some of the best I have had. I usually get the veggie sandwich with no spinach and replace feta with cheddar. They've never messed this up! They also have a wide variety of chips and drinks to accompany your sandwich. The best part about Cheese N Stuff is that you get a super bomb, filling sandwich at an incredible price. I would highly recommend this place, especially for other broke college students like myself!

This place is pretty good and comparable in price to other sandwich chains. For instance, a turkey sandwich here is going for about $6 for about a 6-inch sub. I have been here a handful of time already and have ordered the Turkey sandwich on Dutch crunch bread. The ingredients are very fresh and go well together. I think though that they can tend to put too much dressing if you don't catch them and tell them not to beforehand. I also get annoyed that it's a $0.50 surcharge to use your card for purchases. Another thing that has annoyed me is that I came at 5:40 one time before they close at 6 pm, but they were already closing...

Cheese N' Stuff is by far my favorite sandwich place in Berkeley! The ingredients are always fresh and they aren't skimpy at all! The amount you get will definitely fill you up and it's super close to campus so it's perfect for lunch between classes. Since trying this place a couple years ago I definitely haven't been to subway, that's for sure! The owner, Sam, is always around and he's super funny and full of life. He's so fun to chat with while you're waiting for your sandwich. He is a huge fan of Cal and always puts his predictions up for the football games. My favorite sandwiches to get are the chicken pesto and the deluxe sandwich. I usually get the salami sandwich with provolone and all of the toppings they offer. So good! Deluxe sandwiches come with meat and cheese, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, sprouts, pickles, and onions. I highly recommend the Dutch Crunch bread! It's so tasty! Their salads that they make are also so delicious! I love their Greek pasta salad and their chicken salad! They give samples too if you want to try one before you buy it! read more

It's a rite of passage for Berkeley students to discover Cheese 'N' Stuff. It always surprises me when I find someone who hasn't tried this place, because it's been here forever, and it's so good! At Cheese 'N' Stuff, you'll find simple sandwiches with fresh vegetables and good bread at a reasonable price. Part of the reason the place is so popular among college students is the price. It's $5 for a regular sandwich, and $5.50 for the "Deluxe," which comes with additional fixings. Compare that $5.50 sandwich to the $7.50 minimum sandwiches at Ike's, some of which get as expensive as $12. Cheese 'N' Stuff is obviously the more affordable and convenient option, especially given its close location right in the Telegraph-Channing garage. I get the Deluxe roast beef and Swiss on Dutch crunch, and I add Thousand Island sauce. That's a pretty unhealthy sandwich when you add the Thousand Island sauce, but it's definitely no worse than Ike's. To be totally honest, there aren't too many ways to get a really healthy sandwich at Cheese 'N' Stuff, especially given the portions are so huge. If you eat half of one, you're probably okay. Talk to the owner to get a colorful account of this place's history - tons of famous people have walked through those doors. One last note about Cheese 'N' Stuff: they're always super busy, but they're really quick. Despite the line that goes out the door to SoDoI, you're not going to be waiting longer than a few minutes for your sandwich. My only complaint is that I wish they expanded their hours a bit. I've walked over a couple of times in the late morning only to find they haven't opened yet. read more

If you're in a rush and hungry, I would recommend Cheese 'N' Stuff for filling and well-priced sandwiches. This shop has a variety of types of sandwiches and prices. If you're looking for something cheaper and love the classics, the regular and deluxe sandwiches are all under $6! All the sandwiches taste really fresh and always have a good amount of meat on them! My favorite is the turkey on Dutch Crunch! The Dutch Crunch is crunchy and has a slight sweetness to it. If you're looking for something warmer with more flavor, their signature sandwiches are super good - my favorite is the Chicken pesto. The Chicken is filling and the pesto has a nice basil taste! Overall, this is a great quick and easy lunch spot. The line can be long during the lunch rush, but the line moves quickly! read more

There's an overwhelming variety of lunch options on Southside. But Cheese 'N' Stuff should be your first option. No frills, but lots of options. Don't be intimidated if the line is out the door, it moves quickly. Service is fast and friendly. read more

Cheese n Stuff is my favorite cold sandwich in Berkeley, there I said it. This is one of the few food genres I feel I can speak on as some sort of authority (as a jew and son of immigrants, delis are life) Starting with the bread, the dutch crunch pretty much makes all other breads obsolete (okay maybe not All). But if you prefer sourdough, they've got a good one too. Their pastrami is as solid as I've had in the bay area and of course, their selection of cheeses is heavenly. I love their provolone but I've also had the swiss and monterey jack, both great. The sandwiches are a perfect size for one person, and they'll toast them for no extra charge. I'm yet to try all their salads but the pesto pasta salad is holy crap so good and their potatoe salad is pretty good. All made in house, I believe. Lastly, they've got a solid selection of chips and drinks to complete your ideal deli experience. A sandwich with the works will ding you about $6, a great deal for the quality (cheaper than you'll get at subway....so what'r you even doing??) With chips and a drink, around $8.50, super fair for a very complete lunch for Berkeley. All in all, Cheese n Stuff is a no-nonsense shop where you're going to get exactly what you want out of a deli. My life quality over the last 3 years in Berkeley has absolutely been improved by its presence, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a bomb sandwich read more

This place is a little bit hard to find, I used to work at CREAM and only found out about it after about a year of working at CREAM. Since then, I went here almost every day for a lunch sandwich. My first sandwich in Berkeley was only $4.50?! What a deal! Sandwiches these days are getting expensive, but Cheese 'N' Stuff keeps the price affordable for college students. It's kind of hidden away in a path/walkway between buildings, but if you go to UC Berkeley, then you probably know where it is. I ordered a turkey sandwich on Dutch Crunch bread. It came with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and cheese & spread (which I omitted). I'd never seen this bread before, and I highly recommend choosing it; the bread has a nice crunch to it, hence the name. The portion size is great for the price (no skimping on ingredients), and the service was quick. They also sell chips, cookies, falafel and chicken/crab/tuna salad sandwiches. My only complaint is that the deli meat was a little slippery/glossy/slimy. read more

So...with all the hype, I'm a little disappointed. I got the Turkey delight on Dutch Crunch without mayo and it was just a sandwich. I was kinda disappointed that they didn't toast the Dutch Crunch (which I think is the best way to eat DC) and do the bread wasn't a nice warm crisp texture. There was a good portion of meat though, and the sandwich wasn't bad. The pricing is probably the best part, likely why this place is so popular. Meh. read more

My favorite sandwich is the pepper turkey on Dutch crunch, with everything except mustard and pickles (sorry not sorry). Their sandwiches are standard size, like smaller than a subway foot long but thicker if that makes sense?? The bread is doughy and crunchy on top in all the right ways, the meat is really good and flavorful (and there's so many choices!! From ham to pastrami to turkey etc etc etc). I've also tried some of their pasta salads, which are pretty good and the small is very well priced for how much pasta salad you get. I saw that the recently switched from plastic bags to paper bags which I appreciate- I always felt bag taking a plastic bag that did nothing more than carry around a sandwich. read more

Small deli with great sandwiches/affordable prices. Convenient if you're near UCB campus. Ordered their Turkey Delight on Dutch Crunch bread. Service was very quick even around noon time on a weekday - waited in line for 5 min and was immediately served. The owner seemed to know a lot of the customers in line, so there must be a lot of regulars! Now onto the food, sandwich tasted great - I always love avocado and cranberry together. The turkey was like pulled turkey - a small surprise. The bread tasted great, but it did get quite soggy from the turkey, so you need to finish the sandwich pretty quickly or you're gonna have soggy buns :( read more

Cheese 'N' Stuff is located in an alleyway near campus. I feel like this deli is often forgotten about because it is so hidden, but Cheese 'N' Stuff is honestly such a blessing for college students. It is a great place to grab a quick sandwich on the way to class. The prices are extremely reasonable! ($5-$6 for a sandwich). The workers make your sandwich at the counter right after you order. You can also choose to build your own sandwich from a combination of meats, cheeses, breads, and toppings. [ Tuna Salad Sandwich ] I got this with Dutch bread and Pepper Jack cheese. Their ingredients are always of the freshest quality. The portion size is pretty big and will probably last for more than one meal! read more

I just stopped in for the first time after reading an article in Hoodline about the 5 best delis in Berkeley. I got a pastrami deluxe for less than $6, and everything was fresh and tasty. Everyone was very nice and greeted me in a friendly manner. The only negative is that I'm angry now for going to Subway all this time instead. read more

This is less of a current review and more of a reflection on the food and service, I've received a hundred visits or more. I haven't been in awhile, but I was speaking with my wife about getting out there for the classics. Unfortunately, Berkeley has changed and the rona is doing its thing, but it will be worth it to visit a long time favorite. The father has always been a really nice and generous man with me and mine. He remembers us after long intervals and we pick up like old friends who never missed a beat. I hope the family is doing fantastic and wish them continuous blessings. Great people are getting rare nowadays. We always grab a 5 pack of the turkey and cran sammys and whatever other treats that catch our eye. After loading up, we head straight to the UC Gardens on the hill. Great sandwiches in the mini redwoods is better than a fancy shindig anytime. Looking forward to another hundred visits and saying hello to the family. Be kind and remember, No Mookin'! read more

Decent sandwiches for a very fair price. Great option if you're looking for some place cheap and quick. Food-wise, a 4/5. Having been there twice and gotten the hot pastrami and the Sam's special, I thought they tasted pretty good. Overall, very worth for the price. Service-wise, a 3/5. Sam, the owner is fairly nice, but some of his employees do not have the best attitude. Perhaps it's because I simply haven't been enough to be a regular. Ambiance-wise, a 2/5. A small place located in a place that isn't super easy to find. There's no place to sit so you'll have to take it to go. read more

You will not find a better deal for lunch! $5.95 for a sandwich with all the fixings (pickles, sprouts, tomato, mustard, mayo, lettuce). Roast beef on Dutch Crunch is my favorite. There are also chips, drinks, and baklava (!!!) for sale. Perfect lunch spot, especially for a busy day on campus. There isn't seating so take your sandwich to the glade or by Dwinelle and just enjoy the weather. read more

Did you even go to Cal if you haven't had Cheese N Stuff? Loved these sandwiched all throughout my undergrad days. There isn't a visit to the East Bay that I do not make a stop at this establishment. Just walked in here (about 15 minutes ago), and the only other customers inside were not wearing masks. It's so easy to comply with this, pretty unreal that it's not happening. I know that someone will think, this puts employees in a weird position - sure, true. But a) I'm pretty sure the owners are always there, and b) on some level, to the next customer in line it doesn't really matter WHY it's not happening, only that it's not happening. The employee behind the counter was wearing a mask - a shame for her that no one's making sure the customers do the same. Anyway I walked out without a sandwich. (I've had the sandwiches before - fine, nothing to write home about, gets way more expensive than the menu very quickly if you add anything.) read more

This is one of my favorite places in Berkeley to get a deli sandwich! The ingredients are fresh and the service is very quick. Can't get a better deal than $5 for a giant and filling sandwich! Food: I always get the pepper turkey on a croissant with everything except for mustard. There's a variety of meat that you can choose (pepper turkey, turkey, roast beef, etc.), a variety of breads (dutch crunch, french, croissant, etc.), and a variety of cheeses (american, provolone, etc.). All their veggies are very fresh and the sandwich usually comes with sprouts, onions, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, pickles, lettuce. **TIP: ask for the avocado sauce!!! it's my favorite sauce and separates the sandwich from other deli sandwich shops** Service: The staff is friendly and the owner is always there and he loves making small talk. Ambience: This a quick grab-and-go type of place. You order at the counter and go down the line to the cashier. The walls are lined with fridges of drinks and a variety of chips if you choose to purchase them at an extra cost. Since I moved away from Berkeley, Cheese 'N' Stuff is one of the places I've missed the most. It's a great place to grab a sandwich or a pasta to go between classes. This place is perfect for the busy Berkeley student: it's fast, cheap, delicious, and filling. Most things on the menu cost around $5, and I always leave with enough food to keep me stuffed for the whole day. My go-to is the deluxe sandwich, which can be customized with your choice of meat/bread/veggies/toppings. What meat/toppings I get depend on my mood, but ALWAYS DUTCH CRUNCH BREAD. It comes with a TON of meat and veggies, and is definitely worth the price. I've tried their pasta salads as well, and those are also pretty good! It's that time of the year again - The 2nd Annual Cheese n Stuff OFFICIAL tier list. This semester I passed my 500th Cheese Sandwich eaten and now I'm going to report on my findings. Lots have changed in the last year, with old faces departing (RIP Gabe, RIP Little Guy - hope San Diego is treating you well) and new faces taking their place. Cheese 'N' Stuff is a lovely small sandwich shop that offers a wide variety of yummy classic sandwiches. I have had their pastrami, tuna melt, chicken pesto, and their ham & mustard sandwiches (the latter three being panini) and all were good and very affordable. I particularly enjoy that they have sprouts offered in their sandwiches (which come with any of the sandwiches I think except the regular one). Their bread is fresh (my personal favorite is the sweet french roll) and their meats and cheeses are high quality, especially for the price. They also a WIDE variety of bottled and canned beverages that are similarly affordable. This shop has become one of my regular lunch places and it almost never disappoints. That said, they don't have a lot of unique menu options, but everything they offer is a solid choice.Their sandwiches may not blow your mind, but the quality of food here is well worth the money and the visit. The owner is a very sweet nice older man, who seems to be familiar with a very large portion of the customers. Cheese N Stuff does a solid deli sandwich really fast and on the cheap. The owner, Sam, is something of a local legend, friendly, and loves to get to know his customers. This place is frat city (reason being that lots of Cal frats get meal plans there). You walk inside and there's always top 40 type music blaring, a line out the door around lunch time, and walls lined with posters of Cal athletes. They also have a prepared foods counter with Mediterranean fare (dolmas, hummus, etc.), but almost everybody gets a deli sandwich. The line moves fast. Most people get a "deluxe", which is a $4.25 sandwich with the works and your choice of meat, cheese and roll. My favorites are roast beef & provolone on dutch crunch (with everything) or peppered turkey & jack on dutch crunch (with everything). The dutch crunch rolls are to die for, and I'm a firm believer that the secret to a good sandwich is the bread. "Sam's special" is also favorite, its breaded chicken with spicy cole slaw, and if you ask for any modifications to the sandwich Sam refuses. It's kind of funny, his sandwich is "sacred". read more
