I had a good time. * * * Cheers is one of the less populated bars on Sixth Street. At 10:30 on a Saturday night, I looked at about twenty other bars. All but one had more customers than Cheers. * * * Frankly, having not so many customers suits me fine. I am sixty eight years old. COVID is still a thing. People are still dying from it. I am not thrilled about sharing a room with one hundred and seventy five undergraduates - even if half of them are female and one quarter of them are majorly hot. It doesn't matter if said females are wearing black cocktail dresses, outrageous party costumes, or skintight leather pants. What they are NOT wearing are masks. If I am going to catch a disease from a sorority girl, The least interesting way I can think of for doing that is to get COVID in a crowded room. So having a bar where I am surrounded by plenty of vacant real estate suits me fine. * * * So why doesn't Cheers attract more customers? a) They don't offer live music. b) They don't offer much in the way of entertainment other than Sports TV and recorded hip-hop. c) The room is boxy and nothing special. d) The light show is not that different from any of the other forty six light shows on Sixth Street. e) For a shot bar, they offer a surprisingly limited menu. Go up or down the block to competing establishments and you get a far greater selection of shots. f) Execution is good enough most of the time. I had an Orgasm, a Blow Job and a Fuck Yeah - all standard undergraduate drinks. The Orgasm and the Fuck Yeah were just fine. The Blow Job had most of the ingredients but skipped the whipped cream. The whipped cream is in the recipe for a reason. * * * Still, it was a decent night out. I had three good drinks, drinks I could not have made for myself at home. I saw a light show. I watched the comings and goings on Sixth Street. I saw the Boston Celtics go from twelve points behind the Philadelphia 76ers to three points ahead. Saint Mary's did miserably against Gonzaga. I heard some decent hip-hop. I did not catch a single disease. * * * And better yet, One of the bartenders is a firebreather. He did some very cool stunts with flaming PGA. * * * Cheers may not be the most popular bar on Sixth Street. But it is good enough. read more

Weave around that drunk person and make your way up the stairs where they have a decent view down around the (in)famous 6th street. $2 shots? Heck yeah, get those. Came here for a gathering on a Saturday night. They had hooked us up with a $2.50 well special. Pretty amazing, right? Well, not as amazing when we couldn't even taste the alcohol. Later on in the night we ended up at another bar and paid $4.50 for a well and it was at least double the alcohol at Cheers. Would have had them at a 2*, but... We checked out the back of the downstairs on our way out and the bartender was setting up some flaming shots which made for a great Instagram video. Then we noticed the ring toss game and played as we finished our drinks. The night before we had no problem getting the rings on at another bar. Last night it was impossible. Then the same bartender did it on his first try, and again on his second try. I didn't get this bartender's name, but he's obviously a wizard of some sorts. So +1 star for this guy! read more

I've been a couple times despite only ever visiting Austin. But I love the enormous shot menu and found the shots to be very reasonably priced. And every shot is so clearly priced rather just guessing as to how much you'll be stuck paying after getting a shot. Will definitely return. Plus, they've got my favorite - dirty girl scout. Another fun bar along 6th Street! We came here after some drinks at Buckshot and I couldn't help but compare. The drinks at Cheers were comparable in price but a bit more watered down. It also took a while for us to flag the bartender down. Drinks and shots were delicious and cheap. Would be back! read more

Okay, LS lyrics are admittedly about something much more serious and obviously I survived to write this review, but yowza! When I walked into Cheers Shot Bar I was immediately slapped into the face (not by "Norm!") by the overwhelming, unpleasant smell of 'piss pucks' that permeated the entire joint. After leaving a very large party (~800) peeps at a venue next door, a small group of us went in for what was supposed to be a cheap ($1) drink as promised by the door guy - ended up being a bit more because we had never even heard of the "wells" they stock so we ordered something else -AND I desperately needed to use the ladies; otherwise we would have probably turned around and walked back out. I hightailed it to the restroom, relief (what, TMI?), then doused my hands with antibacterial soap before realizing both handles on both sinks (to turn the water on/off) had been ripped off. Literally, like perhaps stolen? Lol! So, had to venture my way into the men's to wash and rinse while holding my breath until my face turned blue. Any of you who have ever read my reviews about places to booze, know I loooove a good dive bar. But, there is a difference between dive and just disgust. Dirty 6th just keep getting dirtier. Hmm... Yuck! The staff were all surprisingly nice, so I feel I must give two stars instead of one...if not for anything more than I feel really bad they have to stay there for hours and work (nose blind). It had been about an hour and a half since my last cocktail... so even after 5 drinks down already... what do we need? Shots! Enter Cheers! "Don't worry," the bartenders says... "I'll make it nice and strong for you... " Great. Shot #1 - Man... if only I could remember the name of this... it was deliciously fruity and was in a huge glass with a shot glass inside... 2 minutes later... We stumbled upon this spot just bar hopping sixth street. The reason we went in is because they had $2 drink specials, and we were definitely on a budget lol. The outside seating is super nice. The place packed up really quickly, and as soon as I knew it we were on the dance floor. The DJ mostly played older songs which is good because I get so tired of hearing top 40 everywhere I go. This honestly was the best bar we experienced in Austin on our short stay! The photo booth is a nice touch too! read more

Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name... This is not that place. It's a loud shot bar. I couldn't hear anyone's name if they shouted it to me. We got a round of shots from the huge menu of shots. I don't know how the bartender heard what we ordered. I suspect they just eyeballed us and thought, "yea- these guys could use some pineapple juice and tequila. The shots were cheap! The restrooms were scary dirty. Ugh. Sticky floors. Bleh. You gotta come here for the BLUE WAVE and FLAMING DR PEPPER shots (see pics)! I was a first time visitor in Austin, and of course everyone gets taken here for the blue wave shot, which I had NO IDEA what it really was. I didn't hate it coz it was mostly my other two friends that got wet, and me - just one wet boob. Nothing in my face so I was content :) I do love this bar though for their FLAMING DR PEPPER shot. The way the bartender makes them is AMAZING! The flame is so HUGE so you can only order them at the outside patio bar. Those two shots alone are worth the visit to this bar. read more

Had a terrible experience in this bar tonight. I got accused of not paying for someone else's tab. I paid for my drink in cash. A couple other people ordered drinks near me. I was talking to them. 2 girls went to the bathroom. Then the female bartender (or maybe a manager) said I needed to pay for their drinks or get out. I wasn't even given a chance to explain. Then turned over to security to leave. So strange and unprofessional. I wouldn't recommend this bar. I'll never be back. read more

Went on a little day trip with my best friend to Austin. He's not a fan of drinking and has never been to a bar. I convinced him to walk down 6 and see what we find. Walked past cheers and the guy outside said $2 margs. I'VE NEVER WALKED SO FAST INSIDE A BAR IN MY LIFE. We ordered two margs and my friend was really impressed (amateur I know) and I was too! The bartenders were super nice and we also got to try a shot (had something to do with sex...and an alligator? Not sure) the atmosphere was really great and they had a lot of fun games as well. My best friend was so pleased with his first bar experience and it was all because of this place! He's satisfied therefore I am too! read more

Absolutely abysmal experience. Bartender got us in by offering free shots of Buchanans in which I took him up on his offer. Later in that same evening I went into the bathroom and he followed me and accused me of offering cocaine to other patrons. I was threatened and escorted out. I was the only hispanic male in the establishment and felt racially targeted. If you see about a 6'4 225 male bartender with a beard don't go in if you're hispanic. You would think that an Austin establishment would be more progressive in their offerings to non-natives but sadly this is not the case. Save your money and go to a much better establishment such as Icenhauers or Peckerheads. Much better crowd with bartenders that aren't out on a personal vendetta to power trip. read more

You get convinced to come inside here after one of their staff people shouts out "$1 tequila shots!!!" and if you are from California like I am, you think you must be hearing lies, but no....you are in Austin where alcohol flows like water, including the tequila. So you go inside for your $1 shot, and there really aren't too many other people in here (granted it was about 8:30pm which is a little early I suppose) and before you can even order a $1 shot you get offered $1 jello shots too ha This place just seems like a dollar store for alcohol. The tequila we got for one buck, actually wasn't too bad at all, but this is not a place you stay at for multiple drinks or to hang out. You literally come in, "Cheers" and take your "Shot" in the "Bar". Hence the title, so at least they get credit for their name, but that's about all they get credit for. read more

Everything that now-Dirty 6th has become is pretty much present here. Every surface you can touch in Cheers is drenched with the afterbirth of frat partiers and their acolytes. Wear gloves. There is a sort of second story they built on the east side of the interior bar space to make more room for people, but beware of smacking your head when you try to walk beneath it. They do have free wi-fi, though. I tried to get the password from 2 out of 3 bartenders during a weird giant lull in SX traffic at 3:30pm. Bartender 1 said "We don't have wifi, man" and bartender 2 said "Fuck if I know." The guest-sponsor-beer-only lady by the front entrance was 5000% more pleasant than the bar staff on this day. (Sadly she did not know the wifi password either). YES, it's SX, but I'm pretty polite and respectful of busy bartenders, in general, so I don't get the crap-giving, especially if it's not busy. The only reason I gave them two stars is because their a/c was measurable, and that is something when you're trying to escape Austin heat. Do not expect the rooftop patio to provide relief when real summer begins, though. When we left, I hoped for SX sponsor Purell to offer a Walkthrough Body Sanitizer, but no such luck. Absolutely terrible service at every bar in the place, small watered down drinks, crowds, filthy (worse than a lot of the other bars around), and to top it all off the place is falling apart. On the deck out back there were old rusting coolers and one of the stairs to the deck literally had broken off. There is almost nothing redeeming about this place. I have heard it's actually faster to get a drink elsewhere and bring it here. No joke. Don't go here if want more than two drinks at a bar the whole night. Do go here if you enjoy incompetent bartenders, people stepping on your shoes, and drinks spilled on you. read more

What you see is what you get. Syrupy drinks served in test tubes seducing the young. Any bar that is so bold as to post up fans at the entrance of their bar pointed to the street to aid in the removal of the smell of vomit automatically gains an extra star in my book. That's just bold. Cheers is probably best enjoyed from the street looking in at the rabble of neutered youth and envisioning them 3 hours later shoeless, crying on the curb, with bits of pizza stuck to their face.
