Checkers/Rally's is a D-tier fast food franchise known for their signature "Big Buford" burger. There is no hipster fanbase ironically consuming this food. You eat here when you've run out of options. I recently stopped in to try their $4 meal deal: double cheeseburger, french fries, soda, apple pie. How can a meal like this be so cheap in New York City in 2025? Mostly by being low quality. The burger patties clearly came frozen, and the bun was wet and spongy. The fries were greasy and lacked crispness, though the seasoning was alright. The apple pie was the highlight of the meal, but it set my health and fitness goals even further back. Many people will likely feel that they're too good for Checkers, and that might be the case. It's struggle food, no frills. The employees seemed to be competent at least, and the speed of service was acceptable. But in terms of flavor and overall food quality, this is subsistence sustenance and nothing more. read more

Checking it out after a year working across from it ~ Checkers Why wait one would ask...well Checkers is fast food restaurant that is sparsely about near home life. So no real want since I suppose visual desire to eat with eyes first wasn't there. Today was the day that I wanted something different and fast, so why not finally give them a whirl. Checkers I suppose can be compared to me only as a cross breed between Wendy's/McDonald's & KFC. So whatever your expectations of those locations apply to when visiting a Checkers. They are a Burger, Chicken, Shake kinda place without being gourmet. My eye caught the 'Lemon Pepper' chicken bites and thought can't go wrong, I like that flavoring. I would say for this first visit it was 60/40 on that front. While the chicken bites were what I ordered (5 piece) knowing I was going for the combo to try their fries, the Lemon Pepper dry seasoning was more in the dish then on the chicken. What this means was that the chicken was premade and sitting for a little bit longer than it should have before applying a dry rub spices. This means it would have to be taken from fryer to bowl within the first minute so the warmth of the oil mixed with the spices and get all shaken up, then plated. My Lemon chicken combo came with side of fries and what appeared to be a very large beverage cup. Opted for the Lemonade to go with my Lemon Chicken. ~ Star 1 earned for good crunch, flavor and juiciness of non-overly cooked chicken. Liked the good size and concept of being a crossbreed between a small chicken tender and a large chicken nugget. I can appreciate there being a difference from their competitors in the marketplace. ~ Star 2 earned for some pretty tasty french fries. They tasted like a seasoned straight shoestring curly fry in makeup/form and flavor. Not overly salted which is a bonus. ~ Star 3 earned for the relatively quick speed of getting my order in the 12 o'clock typical lunchtime hour, without much delay. In addition to the young guy that took my order coming out to wipe tables down and address overflowing trash bin. I decided to eat at location since it was ironically pretty empty. I read through some of the Yelp reviews which I usually do prior and noted they seemed mostly dated at this point. Oh gosh, why did I eat here? Why? Why? Probably because I'd been having beers around the corner at Beast Next Door and was hungry and it seemed like a good idea. In hindsight, it was not a good idea. Now, I don't mean to suggest that the food was not consistent with what you would expect at Checkers. It was prepared exactly as it might be at any Checkers around the country. Which is to say that the food quality is not particularly great (not that I was expecting Shake Shack) but it tasted fine. The fried foods I had (spicy chicken sandwich, fries and chicken nuggets) were not greasy just bland and not particularly appealing. Service was very friendly and even though there were a lot of people there, it wasn't disorganized or unclean. But let me tell you what....I haven't had Checkers in probably 10 years or so and I forgot what that food does to my body. At about 1 in the morning my stomach said to me "hey, wake up. I have a lot to say, and this is going to take awhile". Let's just say two hours later, weak, exhausted, with the tears still drying on my cheeks, I was finally able to get back to sleep. I'm not here to bash Checkers. I knew what the scorpion was when I put it on my back to cross the river. This fast food chain is not as well known here but multiple locations have opened throughout NYC. I decided to give them a try and see how they compare to the competition. Their menu has a very good selection. Besides the usual burgers, chicken sandwiches, and french fries, they also sell hot dogs, fried chicken, and milkshakes. Two of their more unique offerings in relation to other chains are the chili cheese fries (with bacon and ranch dressing) and the banana milkshakes. Their signature sandwich, the Big Buford, is a double cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo. It was similar in taste to a Wendy's burger, except bigger and with a thicker bun. And like Wendy's, the slice of cheese on it was not melted. It was pretty good. I also had the chili cheese fries. The french fries themselves are good. They reminded me of the cajun fries that Popeye's sells except not spicy and slightly smaller in size. They have a similar texture, seasoning and the crisp starchiness. However, the chili and the cheese was overkill, because it made everything way too salty. I would be interested in sampling a couple more things in the future. read more

Checkers was almost empty when my friend and I came in around 3-4PM. There was no line, but awkward silence as we indecisively scanned the menu. It's my first time trying Checkers, so I decided to go all out. I know that fast food can do wonders for one's health, but I'm still young, and so I might as well... Food: 1. Ice Cream in a Cone- For $1, and choice of chocolate, vanilla, or swirl, you get a heaping serving of ice cream that has the texture of froyo atop a typical vanilla cone. This was the highlight of my meal! Way better than the McD's $1 ice cream. If I'm ever in a shitty mood, I'm going all the way out to LIC just for this. It not only tastes good, but it's also cheap, so that's a plus. 2. Chicken Box($3)- A decent amount of frozen popcorn chicken seasoned with pepper with a side of fries--I think they're Cajun, but I'm not sure. The popcorn chicken were sort of lukewarm, and along with the fries, got soggier as the minutes flew by. Next time I'll just get the fries. 3. Checker Burger- For a namesake burger, I was expecting something more. Like, clearly there's a reason why this specific burger is named the "Checker Burger" and not just "Something Burger" right? But everything about this burger was meh. Buns are similar to the burgers at McD and BK. Patty was similar to the one at McD too. I felt that it wasn't cooked enough. Borderline tasted like shit(not the literal shit). 4. Oreo MilkShake- holy--not only was this drink huge, but it was only $1.50! Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to take a photo of this, since my friend was happily sipping it by the time I was about to. It was on the heavy side. She didn't really finish this tho. 5. Apple Pie- Listed under the kids menu: 2 for $1. That's a pretty neat deal, especially if you want to try out a sample size of something and not feel wasteful about throwing it away altogether if you don't like it. This tastes best when it's hot. I was disappointed when I came to this location. They were so slow. This is supposed to be a fast food chain! I only ordered a shake, which should take no time to prepare. I've stayed at the Courtyard down the block many times over the last few years, and had never tried Checkers due to the poor reviews. I was in a hurry tonight and thought "it's a fast food chain. It won't be great, but can't be that bad". Boy was I wrong. It is that bad. The place was dirty with random trash, ice cream cone bottoms and wing bones on all of the tables. Dirt and trash on the floor throughout. And, it was not busy. The menu has no descriptions of the items. Don't even see all of the prices. The food was very less than mediocre. I had an underwhelming bacon cheddar crisp (tiny and unflavorful) and a chili cheese dog that wasn't good either. Not impressed with the fries. And the service was underwhelming as well. Not a bad place in an area absent of eating places on Queens Plaza by the DOHMH building and Jet Blue. Yes, I know I work for DOHMH and no one in their right mind should be eating such calorie-filled food, but oh, it is such a guilty pleasure! You have to use self control here. My complain is that they didn't allow us to use staff bathroom, even if we explained that it is for the kid only. Maybe only parents can understand what is the "emergency" when a kid says he/she needs to use the bathroom. We have to run to their neighbor subway, as a kind customer suggested. The "customer only" bathroom of the subway is the worst bathroom you can imagine. You will not be able to wash your hands in Checkers either. These made us lose all our interest in the food. Another problem is they don't have the equipment to scan your coupon from your mobile, you either need to print it out, or get online on site for them to press the "redeemed" button. It's probably the cheapest meal near Queensboro Plaza. I ordered the 4 items for $4 deal. They forgot my drink so I really got 3 items for $4. I could have went back for it but I ask the universe if it's really worth my time. Maybe it isn't suppose to be. So I just left it. This place gets 4 stars for having addictive food when one has those fast food cravings. It always HITS the spot. A friend swore i had to try their fries because its "the best". So i caved in and came in one day. I remember always seeing this store on the train platform, but refusing to come in because it looked like a murder scene in a section 8 housing building. Needless to say, it does illicit that vibe. This place is not the cleanliest and at times i felt like the staff was going to give me hepatitis C when serving me my order. I am also shocked by the employees here because their English is not so good and the more advanced English-speaking employees had to translate cheese fries into Indian so they can understand and prepare the order properly. A lot of the employees in the kitchen and not on the register always seemed perplexed like it is their 1st day on the job. There is only so many items on the menu, so I found that to be a bit bizarre. Their french fries are just like the ones served at Popeyes. The cheese sauce just makes it even yummier. Avoid this particular Checkers location This review isn't a review of the food just a review of the service at the Queens Plaza Checkers. When I walk there's a huge puddle of cola on the floor. There are many employees just standing around doing nothing. Fast food should be quick but when I ordered a cheeseburger(1 single cheeseburger) at this location, they took over 20 minutes to prepare the order(this would have been somewhat understandable if the store was really busy). I wanted to cancel my order but I paid by card this time so I didn't want to deal with the hassle of getting a refund(considering how long it was taking them to make 1 cheeseburger). I also didn't want to walk out and eat the loss as I had already paid. They finally give me my order and I'm looking to get the hell out of this place as fast as possible. As I'm leaving I noticed they got my order wrong. Instead of giving me 1 cheeseburger like I ordered, they gave me an order of fries. The giant soda spill was still there when I left. To sum it up: Service is slow, lazy and incompetent. They mess up simple 1 item orders and take 30 minutes to do so. They have so many employees just standing around doing nothing. While the cashiers are generally nice, the remaining employees barely speak or read English, so they are often confused and are prepare the meals wrong. This location is almost always busy during the daytime hours. A lot of construction workers, police cadets and regular passers-by. They have a great selection of options on the menu. Even a few good shakes and desserts. I usually get 2 burgers. They have specials like 2 for $5 or 2 for $6 depending on your selection. I think their burgers are better than other fast food chains. This was my first time eating at Checkers. The hot wings were great..... The chicken was crispy and the hot sauce had just enough heat. I also ordered the shrimp and fries basket. The shrimps I can definitely do with out, they were nasty frozen shrimp. The fries were good. It was dirty, and in desperate need of a renovation. I have no idea how they passed the health inspections. A good addition to the neighborhood as an occasional alternative to the other big fast food joints. The sandwiches are just OK. I got the Big Buford which is essentially their version of the Big Mac. Bland, but not bad either and filling. The next time I got the spicy chicken which was also somewhat bland but not bad and had some OK spicy chicken taste.
