Came here to show my man some must try spots around town. This bakery has been around for many years. It's a good place to grab a sandwich in the morning because their bread is baked fresh daily. This spot is very spacious and I always find parking right out front. The staff was friendly and professional. Today we grabbed some bacon egg and pepper jack cheese sandwiches on a Portuguese roll with coffees. Everything tasted fresh. On the way out we ordered some pastries to go. read more

This place was buzzing when I got there early one Saturday morning! All types of people from the community, which is a great sign. The prices are ridiculously low! Chaves Bakery is a small chain of bakeries that opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1979. It was founded by Portuguese immigrant John Chaves Sr. He immigrated to Connecticut from the Tras Montes region of Northern Portugal in the 1970s. He opened his first bakery, a small mom-and-pop business, in the center of Bridgeport in 1979. The bakery specialized in various types of breads as well as Portuguese, Italian and French-style pastries and cakes. Today the business is run by Chaves' son John Chaves Jr and his wife Marlene. In addition to their flagship location on State Street in Bridgeport, there are additional locations on East Main Street and one in Fairfield. A fourth location on Madison Avenue in Bridgeport was sold and renamed Rikopan Brazilian and Portuguese Bakery in 2023. A fifth location was located in Monroe, but it has since closed. Locations in Shelton and Seymour were sold to Tony Branco (also a Portuguese immigrant) in 2013. The Chaves Family also owned the two Ambrosia Bakeries in Milford and Stratford, but they are now under new ownership. My son and I recently stopped at the Chaves Bakery & Deli flagship location. We had previously visited their East Main Street location. In addition to having a storefront, this is also the location of their production facility. We were looking to get some festive, spring cookies. Not only does this location offer breads, cakes and pastries but also a full service deli with cold cuts. The whole place smelled amazing! We decided to order some small pastel sugar cookies that made us think of Easter. I also let my son pick out an Elmo cupcake (which was stuffed with an Oreo cookie), which he happily gobbled down later. We look forward to visiting Chaves Bakery again and again. read more

I was visiting the area for a couple of weeks and was looking for some great bread. They did not have the bread I wanted so I ordered it and set up pick up for 9am. On the day of pickup I received a call at 8:30 am saying the bread was running late, probably noon, and that they would call me... crickets! read more

Very nasty attitude the lady in the back in the kitchen the one with hair wrap she was growing stuff around making food like it's a game playing with people food it's too early for this the. She's touching all the counter and touching the egg with her fingers use the proper spatula for the job stop being nasty I only ate the sandwich because I had to go to work she should be fired or at least suspended I got treated bad with attitude unlike others she should. I decided to swing into Chaves Bakery this morning, on a whim. I have worked two blocks away from it for half a year, and have always wanted to stop in. So with a few extra minutes to spare before work, and a granola bar that just wasn't cutting it for breakfast, today was the day. The store front is attached to the much larger industrial bakery. Inside, there is a small deli section which they use for the lunch crowd, and an enormous selection of cookies, cakes, pastries, and breads. When I say enormous, I mean thirteen people could walk in and each need a fancy platter of cookies for 100, and there would still be plenty of cookies left for everyone else. It's pretty awesome. But alas, I wasn't there for sugary treats. When I walked in I didn't see a breakfast menu, but the woman behind the counter was very nice and listed a few of the basics for me. I ordered a simple egg on a Portuguese roll for me, and a bacon, egg, and cheese for my breakfast buddy. The Portuguese roll was so soft and incredibly fresh, and the egg was clearly a straight-from-the-chicken version, and not something poured from a vat, or frozen. Also, it was cooked perfectly right in front of me. My breakfast comrade said his bacon, egg, and cheese was amazing as well. Oh, and get this, the total was just under $5 for both! Crazy, right? I will definitely be back for more quick, cost effective, delicious breakfast sandwiches when I need them on the fly! read more

Normally I have great luck with their products and customer service but last 2 times visiting the store the help was not interested in servicing a packed environment. Ordered Portuguese rolls and rye bread, rolls were stale and had to send back no apology just a look of inconvenience also out if seeded rye again issue of slicing. Please train your help in customer service you just lost customers that spend money in both locations Bridgeport and fairfield weekly have spent a significant amount of money cakes stuffed breads pastries cold cuts etc. So sad management is not trained to train the help in customer setvice read more

Yes, one can buy cakes and pastries here. But, I stopped here for a quick breakfast. The portugese roll that it was served on was nice and fresh. Bacon, egg and cheese inside was pretty good. Coffee was ok, did not expect much more from it. Really, the only downside was that half their staff did not speak english. I loved it when the guy in a company shirt, shook his head "no" when I asked him a question that started with "you work here, right ?". Funny in hindsight, annoying when it occured. read more

The Chaves bakery is a house of all breads that are baked to perfection. They have the best Italian breads and breakfast is a treat.

Those are pretty good and well priced, the pastries are really good! They have this strawberry kiwi thing with cream and a crust on the bottom! Would not recommend going here. I called in my order only to wait 20 minutes after arriving, and was told the food wasn't made. I should also mention that no more than four customers were there. Nobody would help me and out of curiosity, I called them and watched as an employee picked up then hung up the phone. That's bad business, and I cannot trust someone who treats customers that way to make food I'd consume. Who knows what fell on the floor and was picked up and used anyway just to save time or simply because they have no regard for providing quality service. No thanks. read more

This place is awesome!! Never mind their pastries, they're great, but their sandwiches are just as good. Yes you may spend 2 dollars more than going to Subway, but everything is sliced fresh, and their bread is actually baked DAILY with real ingredients. They just lost a customer. I try to buy local, from small businesses, it's great that they are on my way home. Pretty sure they are open until 7. I walk in just before 6:30, they were out of hard rolls, understandably this late in day, one of the people behind the counter announced the time to the girl waiting on me. I then ask for cold cuts and cheese and I'm told the slicer is "off." Really? I guess I'll stick with the grocery store, this place has really poor customer service. read more
