We came for the cookie and wine pairing. Driving up, the signs greeting us were fun and very reminiscent of the old BurmaShave signs. They had us smiling before we walked in the door. The tasting room is small when entering and the room we sat in was very tiny but cozy and felt like an old English cottage but they also had another room that was pretty full that day. The wines were good as well as the cookies which were made by a bakery in Orange called Mary's Mountain Cookies. Being cat people, my friend and I especially loved visiting with the winery cat who was making himself at home in one of the chairs. After the self guided tasting and pairing, we did go to the bar to taste a couple of their other wines that weren't a part of the flight and we were then able to interact with the owners a bit which is always my favorite part of visiting a winery. What a fantastic winery to visit! I found this cute winery today and had a wonderful time talking to Ken about his wines and tasting them. It's located down a gravelly path, with cute signs from their cat Nutter. There's an indoor tasting area and seating, as well as outdoor seating. I decided to do their 8 option tasting and really enjoyed learning about Virginia's wines and grapes, having recently moved here from the Pacific Northwest. Out of all of the wines I tasted, my favorites were the Duo (white viognier/chardonnay blend), the Founded 1734 (red blend), and the Vin Gris (merlot/cab franc blush). Bonus, you get to keep the cute glass after your tasting! This was a great place to visit, run by a super friendly couple, with many great wines. I will definitely be back! read more

What an amazing vineyard! The tasting room is so quaint and charming. We stopped by shortly before closing today and were greeted by the friendliest, most knowledgeable lady. We did the tastings and were given a thorough background on the grapes and vintage origins. Can't wait to return this Summer and enjoy the special events, wine trucks and wine dinners. Fantastic winery, very unassuming. I really enjoy red wines, and they might be my favorite in the region for that. I did a tasting of the reds and they were all great. The 1734 was great, and that's what I ultimately got a glass of. But it wasn't an easy decision . Love the cute cat themed signs. What a nice surprise. We really enjoyed this winery. Tasting left us happy to purchase a case. We enjoyed every wine we tried. The Chardonnay was different than most and we really enjoyed it. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Met the owner he was so down to earth. He really left us feeling that he appreciated our opinion and business.( I hate pretentious places which some of the wineries have been) plenty of indoor seating can't wait to come back with friends when it's warmer and sit outside. There was a food truck but we didn't try as we brought our own allowed snacks. Stop here it's worth it. read more

Just a cool place to hang and sip wine and sangria - and for me, it's exclusively sangria.

A great winery - the perfect example of the way a Virginia winery should be. A beautiful country drive to the location. Unpretentious and down to Earth owners. Great outdoor and indoor atmosphere. Terrific wine (both the whites and especially the reds). And cats. The whimsical signs with a previous resident cat on them along the driveway are funny and will even make dog lovers smile. Both counter tastings and flights are offered. Even if you just want to buy a bottle, the staff let you try a taste of whatever you want to buy. There is also a "tiki bar" on the premises that sells adult slushees for those who are not fans of wine. Apparently this winery gets a lot of business during the summer from folks vacationing on Lake Anna (about 15 minutes away). 10% discount if you buy 3 bottles - which I did. Down a country road and then a nice long driveway through some pasture, this was exactly the getaway we were looking for. This place is AMAZING! Kenny is the absolute sweetest! Due to COVID-19, they had a really nice set up with social distancing and no indoor seating. The wine tasting is so cool! I tired to convince Kenny to sell it online and market for it. There's 6 little numbered, one ounce glass bottles and you get a free wine glass with it. There's a paper with a description of each of the wines which were all delicious. We ask so ordered some cheese and some meats. There was a major array of all cheeses. We ordered the smoked cheddar and the pepper jack which had a bit of a bite. It definitely was SO much better than the store bought cheese most wineries sell. Played hookie from work on a Friday in May and visited in the late afternoon. For a small place, Chateau Merrillanne packs a punch. The favorites were the Grimalkin Rose and 2012 Palace Red (Chambourcin & Merlot, which I picked up a bottle of). The Grimalkin was one of the darkest looking Roses I've ever seen; it was hard not to admire my glass. While I'm not usually a Rose drinker, I'd make an exception for this again. The other wines were pretty good as well. What I also liked was the price. All but one of the wines were under $20. I mean; seriously? The most expensive was their $28 2012 Governor Spotswood Red, which was off the tasting menu (I gave my best puppy dog look but my pourer stood firm). It's refreshing to find a winery that doesn't feel the need for an excessive tasting room; historical refurbished barns suit me just fine. You won't find a huge selection here, but what they have is worth visiting. read more

What a pleasant surprise. Nice small venue with a unique Covid 19 tasting. You get cute little bottles of the wine for your tasting with some crackers and a souvenir glass. They also had good sangria available. 5 of the 6 wines we tasted were very good. There access road is a little rough otherwise a neat place. read more

This was my husband and my first stop on our wine tasting tour. What a nice place. Friendly people. Every wine we tasted was delicious, and the aroma of their wines were excellent. We bought several bottles, and enjoyed a glass of wine on their back deck. The only down side is their very long gravel driveway. If they would black top it or at least a few feet after turning onto their property it would be better for customers vehicles. read more

As a group, we ventured to Orange ad Louisa Counties for vineyard visits and stopped in at Chateau Merrill Anne as well. We really enjoyed this vineyard! The tasting room is quaint, but nicely laid out. The lady working the tasting room was very pleasant, knowledgeable and happy to be there, which helped to make us enjoy the experience even more! The prices are VERY fair considering all of their wines were VERY nicely done! We really wanted to buy one of each, but only bought 2 this time, to make us come back and buy more in the future. The only issue is with Garmin... Be careful trying to find them, we were turned around based on using Garmin and Waze. The uses two popular winery/wine experts to make their wines: Michael Shapps and Hillsborough Winery. So, the owners of this winery knows what they need to do to be successful and they're doing it!! We had a wonderful experience here! We came here with our wine club (23 women)....The owner was so friendly and fun, we had called several weeks in advance and and asked to have our lunch here that we were providing. She had tables setup so beautifully for us, what a nice surprise that was! They even took the time to pour our tastings at each table. Winery is nestled back in Orange, VA. As far as wineries in the area go, it is one of the newer ones but it is already doing a great job. The wines are good, and the wine slushy is a real treat. The outdoor area is really cute and perfect to take a picnic and enjoy a glass. The owners are welcoming and warm, and the winery is making a great start. While Chateau Merrillanne might be a bit off the beaten path, the road there is a relaxing drive through the rolling farmland of Orange County, Virginia. Its brand new Tasting Room is, is an original with every bit of that Virginia country flavor. We brought a picnic lunch to accompany our wine, and the tasting provided us the opportunity to chat with the owners, Kenny and Emily, who were willing to share some interesting bits about the struggles and joys of getting a winery off the ground. It was a very enjoyable stop on our way through Orange County, and one that not only saw us enjoy the tasting, and a couple of glasses with lunch, but convinced us that the bottles we left with won't be our last ones. We'll be back by again soon to enjoy a bit more of what Chateau MerrillAnne has to offer. read more

What a pleasant surprise! My husband and I decided to stop here on our way home to DC from Richmond; we took the long way to avoid 95 traffic and this winery was on the way (kind of). I'm so glad to we made the point to stop. It was very welcoming and charming. The wines were outstanding. We frequent wineries often and this one was impressive. They offered 7 wines in the tasting and we ended up getting a glass to share outside and a bottle to bring home, which we don't often do. Very much worth the stop, whether it's on your way or not. Awesome experience on the way home from visiting Montpelier. It looked a little "minimal" when we pulled up. When we got in there the owners were friendly and had just opened March 2014. But the owner was born on the land. The wine was really good. In addition they sell a locally made goat cheese that is to DIE for. Paired w their wine, it was a great experience. My friends and I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy some wine at this quaint vineyard. We were very impressed! The owners are just wonderful, adding fun stories and friendly conversation to our tasting. My friends and I have varying palettes too and were surprised to find that we all enjoyed every last wine we tasted. That's a rarity for this group! We also brought some charcuterie, and were able to enjoy it with our bottles of wine on their lovely outdoor patio.
