Especially for someone who likes cider and wine, the Meade has a nice, refreshing flavor. The different flavor nodes of the honey make it sweeter and not bitter (personal preference). Bergen House is a craft meadery that opened in Middletown, Connecticut in September 2020. It was…read morefounded by army veteran Talon Bergen. He first began experimenting with homebrewing when his brother-in-law gifted him a Mr. Beer kit. The first batch of Bergen's homebrew was awful, but the kit came with an interesting book that he read over and over again. He soon became fascinated with the science behind brewing and fermentation. Later on, a friend gifted him a bottle of homemade mead. Bergen's wife Emilie liked it much more than any beer she ever tried, so he decided to try his hand at crafting mead. Mead is a fermented beverage made from a mixture of honey, water and yeast. It is the oldest fermented beverage known to man (predating beer, wine and cider). Like his first batch of beer, Bergen's first batch of mead was also awful. After several months, Bergen finally began making mead that was drinkable. The Bergens later had an idea to open their own brewery. After seeing how many breweries that Connecticut already had, they instead decided to open a meadery. The Bergens found a space in Middletown's old trolley barn building to house their meadery and taproom. Although not the state's only meadery, Bergen House is the only one to have its own taproom for on-site consumption. I recently visited Bergen House for the first time after going for a long bike ride on the nearby Air Line State Park Trail. I was greeted by Emilie Bergen who was very friendly and talked to me about the different meads. There were eight different meads on tap during my visit. Each one has different spices and fruits added for flavoring. I ordered a sampler flight which featured "Crime Scene" (Rye Bourbon Barrel-Aged Sweet & Sour Cherry Mead), "Local Buzz" (Dry Mead made with local honey from Hilltop Apiaries), "Wally" (Off-Dry Mead made with wildflower honey, green tea and Citra hops), and "Grapefruit Meads Business" (Wildflower Mead flavored with rosemary, grapefruit & ginger). The latter two were my favorites! Emilie also gave me a small sample of "Bochet": a traditional French Mead made with wildflower honey caramelized before fermentation. I ended up taking home a growlito of "Wally", which tasted a lot like a honey-infused New England IPA. I had a great experience at Bergen House and I look forward to returning!

Came here on a Friday afternoon for the winery. I walked casually through the farm store and into…read morethe winery. There were about 6 patrons inside there chatting over the drinks. I stood at the bar for a few minutes when I realized no one was coming so I went back to the front end to get some help. She sent someone right over. I ended up grabbing a flight because that's the best way to try wine at a winery you've never been to before. I decided to have my drinks outside on the porch patio. Walked outside and there about 15 people out there. I was wondering where everyone was based on how many cars were parked out front. They also have patio on the grass. Both have beautiful views of their winery. The pours for the flight were large, certainly more than a 2.5 oz pour however it just meant I needed to stay a little longer to finish and get right for the drive home. I think the flights may be more appropriate for sharing but either way no regrets here. The wine (well 3 out of 4) were delicious. I was not a fan of the Sunset Red it's their red blend and it smelled nothing like it tasted. I won't tell you what I think it smelled like because wine is a bit subjective unless you're a sommelier. That being said the boxcar red was much better and I think my fave I tried was the River Valley Riesling. Nice and crisp for the hot summer day. They have a gazebo outside and some tables and chairs with umbrellas for shade. A full outdoor bar seating area under a roof overlooking the winery and the occasional train. The ambience could have been perfect but they hang their dirty rags and towels on the porch to dry out. I think a little clothes line on the side of the building would work out well for this instead. There was also an umbrella and some other random items laying on the porch floor right near me. On my way out I asked about ingredients in one of their gluten free cakes, it's from Walmart. Now don't get wrong, I love having gluten free options but I was very surprised when they told me it's a Walmart cake. Just skip the gluten free treats and get the potato salad. It was fire and I would totally come back for that regardless if it's made in house or not. The workers were friendly and willing to help. I'll be back for another flight soon!

I have been drinking and collecting Roman Roth wines for years now and have always enjoyed them. The team that took care of us was amazing. Nothing but smiles and service. We were very lucky to have the opportunity to experience this wonderful visit. The only downside is that the drive from mid-island to the Hamptons can get a little long.
