Yelp Review My friends and I visited Sharpe Vineyards yesterday, while visiting Pomfret. The owner at first appeared very friendly and accommodating, unfortunately the visit shortly became chaotic. The owner became over talkative and extremely rude. One of my friends understandably became upset about the owner's manic behavior and decided not to participate in the tasting. The owner then became belligerent and started talking about my friend in the third person as if she was not even in the room. She said to us her three friends "oh never mind about her being upset, that's just the way some people are", or words to that effect. Then the owner stated "I haven't done anything wrong. " I attempted to diffuse this situation without success. The owner just became more manic and unpleasant. During this whole situation my friend, who was very distressed by the owner's behavior, remained calm and quiet. We ended the tasting as quickly as we could, bought our wine and left. We came to relax on a Saturday afternoon. Although we arrived an hour before closing, we were being rushed repeatedly by the owner. What used to be a warm, welcoming, beautiful experience is no longer. They didn't even bother to put flowers in the pots on the patio. I really thought about not doing this review, and maybe I am making a mistake, but here goes. We stopped in on our way to Mystic, as I had read about their Ballet of Angels Chardonnay, and not being a Chardonnay drinker, I just had to try it. We pulled into the parking lot, and immediately fell in love with the location and the history of the place. The setting is beautiful. We walked into the tasting room, and immediately taken aback by the elderly woman who really didn't greet us, she hollered for someone else saying we have guests. A younger woman entered and was so sweet. She tried talking to us, but the other woman kept butting in and we learned it was a mother and daughter. My hats off to the daughter, she should win daughter of the year. She was so patient and tried so hard to be respectful of her mother, while trying to tend to us. It quickly became apparent that politics were going to be discussed and the mother was going to rudely interrupt any conversation we tried having. We each ordered a glass and passed on the tasting we couldn't get a word in edgewise. She was bossing us, telling us how to drive and it went on. We grabbed our glasses and headed out to the patio, where the mother followed trying to tell us where to sit so we wouldn't get sunburned and then telling us we wouldn't get sunburned because it was October. We couldn't get away from her. The experience was cringe worthy. We sat, and found the Ballet of Angels crisp, smooth and a very drinkable chardonnay. Mr. B went with the Red Seraph which he loved too. A family showed up that had been at the same inn we were at, and we were chatting. Once again the mother had overtaken their conversation, offended two of the family members, completely unaware that she is offensive. When we go to a winery, it is to relax, savor some wine and take in the setting. That was not possible here. We drank our wine, said our quick goodbyes to the other family. Stepped in to buy a bottle of Ballet of Angels to take with us, and the mother followed us out of the tasting room continuing to tell us how to drive and talking politics and the war in Ukraine, it was extremely uncomfortable. I was disappointed as I want to talk to the daughter about the wine, and it was absolutely not possible. The daughter did her very best to smile and serve her guests. Wine was decent but the service was atrocious. I've never felt less welcomed at a winery. Before we even got in the door a woman came to the door and asked us what we wanted. Shocked but replied with a tasting she said ok but we close at 3 so you better figure out what you want to buy. It was 1:50. We were well aware of their closing time and felt that over an hour was plenty of time for a tasting. We were all carded (we were there for my 40th birthday) and then the woman proceeded to grab my purse out of my hands while saying no outside food allowed and put it behind the bar. I was literally in shock. How dare you grab someone's purse!!! Next we were told 20+ times they closed at 3 but yet the woman giving us the tasting left the room between each pour and would go outside (seemingly doing other tastings). She proceeded to be very awkward the entire tasting. The elderly woman, her mother I assume, also came in to tell us numerous times they closed at 3. The tasting wound up taking 40 mins!!! Not because we got good pours , in fact I almost didn't taste some of them because the sip I got didn't even give enough to taste it, but because she kept leaving!!! Lastly the elderly woman ended our visit screaming at what I assume was her daughter because she sat someone at 245. My husband and I have been to Sharpe Hill Winery a few times and the experience has always been pleasant. The wine was delicious and the atmosphere was inviting. We have always enjoyed ourselves. That is, until the last time we visited. We went on a Sunday afternoon and arrived at 1:30. The winery was only open 12-3 (winter hours) and it wasn't busy. The second we walked in we were accosted by an elderly woman who started barking at us to go to the counter. My husband and I were so stunned we walked into each other. As the manager was trying to check us in the elderly woman was telling her how to do her job. She felt the need to tell us several times that we were not to take the glasses because they were too expensive to replace. (We had no plans to take the glasses.) We were seated and the tasting began. I had ordered a cheese box and when it arrived it appeared to be a box for one, since there were only 6 Ritz crackers in it. We asked for more crackers and the elderly woman made a fuss about costs, then deposited more crackers in the box with her bare hand. I don't eat food other people have touched with their hands, so those crackers were uneaten. The elderly woman then grabbed a broom and dustpan and swept underneath us, saying she didn't want us grinding crumbs into the floor. Look at the floor in the photo of the tasting room; there is no way we could have ground crumbs into it. She finally left us alone after sweeping the phantom crumbs, and the manager finished with the tasting. We decided to take the cheese box with us but as we were leaving the elderly woman tried to grab it from my husband. He said we were taking it, she asked why, and he said because we had paid for it. We talked to some people in the parking lot and it turns out the elderly woman is the owner and the manager is her daughter. Though we enjoy the wine, we will not be returning to this winery unless the elderly woman is no longer working there. She has no people skills and made the experience so stressful and uncomfortable. We go to wineries to relax and unwind, not to be treated like we're trespassing on someone's property. We liked one of the wines we tried but agreed to just get it at the liquor store instead of spending more time there and being made to feel like we were stealing something else we had paid for. I have read the other reviews made of this place over the last months and they all seem to be in the same vein. The owner/mother is destroying this once-lovely winery with her overly-aggressive treatment of customers and it is definitely past time for her to retire. read more

Before even entering the building we were not so kindly greeted by an elderly woman who counted everyone in my party and assumed that we would be not be comfortably accommodated sitting outside (we had hoped to sit outside part of 6 btw). We have previously been to the winery and had an enjoyable time, but this time we arrived at 11am when it was due to open and heard the elderly owner swearing at and berating one of the other staff members, this was very unpleasant to witness. She then spotted us and after giving us strict instructions where we could and couldn't sit, and how to sit properly on the chairs she left and her daughter proceeded to give us a tasting. She was very knowledgeable and the wines were good, this was the highlight of our visit. However, throughout the tasting the owner kept returning to criticize the daughter and bark out instructions to her, with some added instructions to us on how to sit and making us move our table so as to be further away from the wall. At this point we just wanted to finish the tasting, buy some wines and escape asap. It was a slightly surreal experience, which reminded us of an episode of Fawlty Towers! My advice is for the owner to stay behind the scenes and let her daughter deal with the customers. After this visit I read some reviews and it seems like we got away quite lightly as she wasn't that rude to us, just bossy and controlling. However, the yelling and swearing at the other staff was the most unpleasant and unprofessional thing I've witnessed. Will not be returning. read more

I give this two stars because the scenery and atmosphere is beautiful. Set in the rolling hills of Pomfret, Sharpe Hill is a gorgeous Connecticut vineyard with New England charm. I am also giving it two stars because the older woman who owns the vineyard is condescending, rude and (at times) borderline delusional. I wish I read the other one star reviews before visiting. Here's our experience. Arrived, parked the car and walked up to the tasting room. Instead of a warm welcome and greeting, the older woman bombarded us and immediately began dictating all kinds of rules that made little sense. I complemented her nice scarf. She quipped back saying "yah". I asked her when the restaurant would be reopening and boy oh boy was this a huge mistake. She turned evil. Started spewing out QAnon rants and extreme right views saying our dumb President has everything out in the ocean, the borders are wide open for people to come in here and murder us all, and so on and so on. I replied saying "I'm sorry I asked" and she continued to rant making me feel as if it were my fault! Our group of four laughed it off and said wow... and we got a bottle, sat outside and drank it. We ordered an $18 cheese platter that is nothing but a handful of Ritz crackers, grapes, nuts and a slab of orange nut crusted cheese. Not worth the price. We ordered another bottle and then asked for four waters. That was another mistake. The older woman started ranting about how people steal the glasses, we don't have enough, if you want water you can buy a bottle but you can't drink it until you finish your wine and use those glasses. Meanwhile, the poor kid waiting tables, who is the grandson, brought us free water from their artisan well with four new glasses. The older woman seemed really concerned about the water and our glasses and literally checked on us several times to ask if we were done with the water and our glasses. I wasn't, but drank it while she watched and gave her my glass. So rude of her! I've never had someone stand over my shoulder and wait for me to finish a glass of water so she could take the glass back. I felt bad for the younger woman and young waiter working there. Sharpe Hill Vineyard is a craft winery that opened in Pomfret, Connecticut in 1996. It was founded by husband and wife Steven and Catherine Vollweiler. The couple purchased the 25 acres of vines in 1991. They later hired Howard Bursen to become their head winemaker. Sharpe Hill's wines have earned hundreds of awards for excellence in international and national competitions. One of their white wines, Ballet of Angels, is the best-selling New England-produced wine in New England. One of their other notable wines is 'Red Seraph': a Cabernet Franc. The winery and tasting room are housed in a historic house from 1750, as well as a barn that is even older. Sharpe Hill also has an adjoining Zagat-rated restaurant called the Fireside Tavern. My wife and I have visited both the winery and the restaurant multiple times. Fireside Tavern does not accept walk-in diners, as they have limited tables and seatings per day. Reservations must be made weeks in advance, especially during the Autumn season. Eating at the Fireside Tavern feels like being invited to an intimate dinner party during the Colonial Times. My wife and I always start off with their Fruit and Cheese Plate, which includes goat cheese, Jarlsberg, Brie, Stilton, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, green apple slices, dates & prunes, walnuts and fig jam. The entrees are also excellent. I always order the Filet Mignon (which is the best Filet Mignon I've ever tasted!) My wife usually orders a seafood dish such as the fresh sea scallops or the lobster. For dessert, their pumpkin cheesecake is to die for! And of course, they have excellent wine pairings for every course. Sharpe Hill Vineyard is a true New England gem. An overall pleasant experience. It was a nice drive to Sharpe as it is tucked away in residential CT. We were the first ones there on a Sunday tasting at about 11:30am. It was difficult to tell if it was open as there wasn't much of a marked door to enter. The three of us were very friendly greeted and given the info about the tastings. We went with the $17 tasting which allowed us to try all of the wines they make (about 12) and keep the small wine glass. The only downside was having to buy the cheese board/box. We were told it is required to have food with alcohol in CT and we didn't bring anything. I would check on that rule before going and buying the plate. It wasn't a cheese board worth $17 but we were able to split it. The tasting area is small and quaint. Nick who served at the bar was very knowledgeable and nice. I never felt rushed. The wine was tasty and we ended up buying half of the wines. It was a nice visit and we felt valued as customers. read more

Wow. I tried to return to Sharpe Hill Vineyard Sunday for the second, but sadly last time I'll ever attempt to come here. It's unfortunate because as you can see In my photos the first experience was lovely & we had knowledgeable staff tell us about the wines. Sunday my partner and I went to stop by about 1 hour and 20 minutes before they closed. We did not even get past the front doors before an elderly lady (now we learned was the owner) yelling at us that we only had 10 minutes to order since they are closing(??) weird that they would turn away sales one entire hour before close. We originally came for a tasting but was told we aren't allowed that we can only SHARE ONE GLASS of wine or buy a bottle to go..... so, we were going to buy a bottle and purchase a wine glass since the glass I had broke. Immediately this elderly women was YELLING at me that I cannot buy ANY glasses... this is when another women, the daughter... had come out to try and reel her mother in. The two women began to bicker and yell at each other, the mother even telling her to "SHUT UP" !? I couldnt believe how dysfunctional this was - that this is how they run their business? Appalled. I couldn't make out what one or the other was saying because the mom wouldn't let ANYONE get a word in edge wise... after being yelled at myself I was so fed up and I just walked out right in the middle of them arguing. Left, didn't purchase anything. If they could have just acted professionally they would have made a sale and sold an entire bottle of wine... if you look at Google reviews or Yelp reviews you will see the trend of this old Lady who is the owner cause many many problems with many patrons to the point they will not come back, and neither will I!!! The service sucked, they are under staffed because the people who work there are weird and rude, spilled wine on one of the people I was with, they were white pants, didn't have wavers for if people came with their kids who weren't 21, wouldn't let people under 21 in the place even if they were their kids. I took a long journey on a wild goose chase. My perspective let's take the opportunity to make the most of it; where is the closest winery? I scored big time by finding this quaint winery in a part of Connecticut that is unfamiliar to me. The main building is over 300 years old! Our servers were very personable and accommodating. They made us feel right at home. We had a wonderful experience. We choose the 6 tastings only because we arrived an hour before closing and had a long drive home. I have to say of all of the winery's I have visited in Connecticut, this winery had my favorite selection of wines. Totally worth the trip and I am willing to go back. The grounds are beautiful! This is a beautiful winery, a completely idealized version of a colonial house. They even have the zig-zag fences surrounded beds of flowers and squashes. There is outdoor seating to enjoy the surroundings, and pieces of art tucked away in corners. It had been several years since we had visited Sharpe Hill so I didn't bother checking recent reviews because we had a lovely time in the past. Sharpe Hill has changed drastically. The restaurant is closed and it's hard to tell if it's still a working vineyard. Believe what previous commenters have said about the people who run the place! The older woman is very off putting and acts like she doesn't want your business. She warned us about the "black wasps" when we were sitting outside - never saw any. We didn't stay long; it was near closing and we weren't comfortable anyway. I believe there is some kind of mental illness going on. It's too bad because it used to be nice here. read more

Sadly this winery should no longer be a destination winery or part of the Connecticut Wine Trail until the older woman owner is no longer involved in the public aspect of the winery. While her daughter tries to make up for the mother's behavior, unfortunately she can't offset the unwelcome attitude of her mother. Also, since it had always been a bustling tasting winery especially in summer months, we just assumed it still operated as it had when we had been there before. I can understand the limited hours on a weekday, but to only be open from 11-2 now makes it very difficult as a patron to get there and from the sounds of it, it is no longer a place to sit and relax and enjoy the winery atmosphere. The most unpleasant winery visit I've ever experienced, by a wide, wide margin. Before we could even set foot inside, we were being yelled at and scolded by the mother (a woman and her elderly mother seemed to be the only employees). Both owners seemed overwhelmed and all of their stress was offloaded onto guests. The older woman kept loudly complaining that "everyone arrived at once." Two issues this this: 1) It overtly made guests feel like we had bothered and upset the owners by showing up (don't worry, we won't bother you again!) And 2) There were maybe four cars in the parking lot and the venue wasn't remotely busy, let alone full. This was honestly bizarre. Once we got seated, our visit was regularly interrupted by weird announcements from the mother: that there were black wasps we shouldn't swat if they came near us (?), weirdly aggressive, unsolicited directions about how to operate the bathroom door, and, memorably, an unprovoked rant against the Biden administration? Charming. There was another weirdly hostile announcement that they'd be "closing soon, at 3:00," at 2:15, and the mother started collecting glasses at that point. Altogether, we were eager to leave and they seemed eager to kick us out. The most fun we had here was finding some camaraderie with all of the guests around us, who received the same abusive treatment and were able to laugh about it a bit. Besides all that, the property is undeniably beautiful but in disrepair. The owners are clearly having a hard time but some kind of massive change needs to happen here. At this point, I wouldn't consider returning unless I hear of a major overhaul or change of ownership. To the daughter owner: your mother unequivocally needs to retire from her involvement with this business. That may seem like a bold statement from a stranger but when every single review from the past few months raises the same, egregious issues, I hope you can see that there's a serious underlying issue here. Wine tasting - 5 stars Dining - 3 stars Sharpe Hill has an interesting and historical feel to it. It has a lot of nice, old, beautiful pieces as decor but also a little bit that's borderline too kitschy. Overall, it gives this barn a unique ambiance. The tasting room has eclectically decorated and has no more than 20 seats. The tasting of 14 wines for $15 (plus glass) is a steal and a great way to try all their very different, very tasty wines. They have 3 chardonnays that were all different and lovely. The tasting also includes 2 dessert wines, a white and red. The upstairs dining area has the same quirky feel as the first part of the barn. There are no more than 40 seats in their 2nd floor dining area. Our waitress was very sweet. The food was only so-so, though, and for the prices, I was hoping they'd be a little more unique. The creole shrimp was uninteresting; I cannot fathom why it's ever won an award, as I am pretty sure I could have made it at home. The lobster special and french onion soup special were far and away the "winners" at the table. The moon mountain cake is super rich and worth sharing. Great experience overall. read more

Their website says "no bachelorette parties" but we decided to go incognito since we were only a party of 6 originally (eventually nine). As soon as we started walking up to the door, the owner (who I later found out was named Catherine) said you might want to call your driver back. She then repeated three time that "you probably won't like our accommodations here." One of our group replied, "Do you want us to leave?" She said no and took us inside. She told us where to stand while we looked at the menu (very weird). We got our wine and went to sit and then she told us where to put the bottle on the table as if we never used a table before. She made everyone super uncomfortable. There was one other couple on their patio and they were also baking in the sun. They asked to move inside because it was so hot. There were tables in the grass beyond the patio that they had blocked off. We theorized that they don't like people sitting there because Catherine the Creep can't watch everyone. The one wine I had was good but I would've wanted to actually do a tasting but we weren't allowed. They could've gotten the business of several returning customers but instead they got several people that would highly recommend to other that you do not step foot in this place. read more

A group of 5 of us came here yesterday to do a wine tasting. When you arrive, there's two choices: half tasting (6 wines for $10) or a full tasting (15 wines for $15). Of course I can't let the better deal go by, so I did the full. Something worth noting is that I think if you want to keep the glass, its an extra $3, and I think they meant to say that it's 14 wines for $15. The pours are pretty generous, and you end up being able to taste essentially all of their wines. Now, I've been to a lot of wineries and done a lot of tastings. I have to say that this is the only winery that I've enjoyed the majority of the wines. Jill (one of the owners) was doing our pours. Let me start off with the good qualities of this location. The winery is beautiful, a very old venue with unique qualities. The decor is festive - we've been both around Christmas and Easter. They have an outside seating area which, when in full bloom, is gorgeous. Their food is delicious and they have something to suit everyone's pallet, even the bread and butter was good. They have a large selection of wine, which once again, will suit anyone's pallet. We had gone for a wine tasting which was reasonably priced to try all their wines. While we were there they had offered us a table for a late lunch as they had tables available - during peak season you need a reservation. The first visit we had was nice and the young staff was respectful and knowledgeable of their wines and the process that went into it. We had enjoyed ourselves and the service so I made a reservation to have lunch with our close friends; this required a $200 deposit since it was a large party. I'm not sure what happened with the staff between our initial visit and this second encounter we had but it was a complete 180. We had a party of 11 and we all arrived at the same time 5 minutes before our reservation time. We were immediately judged walking through the door. One of our party members over heard the wait staff call us "cheap" as we were being seated. Our server treated us like we were less-than. She didn't offer us appetizers and presumed that we wanted to skip straight to an entree. Every restaurant that I have been to the server always lets us know of any house specials, as well as, if they do not have a dish available to order. Our server didn't mention any of these things until someone attempted to order the dish/dessert. Not to mention our dishes came out staggered. Despite being treated as outcasts we still tipped her a generous 25%. One member of our party was constantly watched by management. Questioned why she was going outside or why she was going to the parking lot to check on her son. When she was informed of my friends intentions the manager proceeded to say goodbye with a snooty attitude and repeated her goodbye until my friend repeated it back. This woman knew she would be back and continued to harass my friend. If we were leaving there would have been a goodbye and a thank you. I don't recommend coming to this winery due to the staff alone. The servers and management we had at our visit this last time need to learn manners from their young staff. We stopped in to buy a bottle and get a stamp on the wine trail. My wife was wearing a mask as we entered. My wife was told masks were not only not required at Sharpe Hill but should not be worn, This was by an elderly lady who said she was the owner. She said her lawyer said her business would be liable if someone got sick while wearing a mask and many businesses in the area were not allowing masks to be worn. There was a younger lady helping us buy a bottle and had a not run my credit card so quick we would have left without buying. The whole time the elderly lady/owner was condescending to us. my wife left right away, I stayed to complete the sale. I will never go back. We don't care if others are not wearing masks but my wife should be allowed to wear one withour harrassment read more

The place is beautifully appointed in a gorgeous secluded location. The restaurant is marketed as fine dining. Babies aren't welcome and children are required to sit throughout the meal. There is no posted dress code on their website however... here's the reason for the 2 stars. We had reservations for a party of 11 secured with a $200 deposit. We arrived and entered together. Some of us may not have been their "normal" type of patrons. We're an eclectic group. Our outfits ranged from business casual to a 14 year old in jeans and a hoodie. Our group was seated upstairs and I took the opportunity to use the restroom while they went to the table. Their walls are thin. So thin that the conversation between the hostess who sat us and the waitress that was with her was crystal clear. She stated that she just sat another "cheap" table. I was livid. They preceded to discuss other "cheap" tables and situations where the patrons attire dictated how they were treated and the resulting tip that was left. I left the restroom wanting to leave. We didn't because we drove an hour for the experience. Now. The food was excellent tasting but the questions we were asked were insulting. When approached by the waitress in regards to food it wasn't, "Would you like to try one of our appetizers?" It was, "Do you want appetizers or are we just going to skip to the entrees?" We weren't revisited as often as other tables. Our meals came out staggered. They didn't have any more scallops or key lime tarts but that wasn't presented until people actually tried to order them. Coffee was never offered, we had to ask. All in all we were treated "less than". The staff assumed and we left a 25% tip. We will never be back and will be telling our friends (who can definitely afford to go) to not bother. A great meal but horrible attitudes. Ever watch Pretty Woman?? What a great experience. A beautiful summer sunny August day enjoying wine in a shaded spot on their patio was what more people should do to relieve stress. The elderly lady there who I assume was the sole owner gave us a little history of her family-owned vineyard and how it changed over the years. Surprisingly she tied her years of experience into recognizing the policies and state and federal regulations of business hours, taxes, employees SS expense, etc. that added to her business's decline. I could see where many people would be offended with a true story about how our government especially in the last 2 years has become so controlling and corrupt. I'm shocked at how this business owner dares to complain and explain her personal feelings of oppression via taxes and regulation here in Connecticut. Perhaps she's not aware most people in Connecticut work for the state and support everything they do. What a great place to have a good tasting wine while listening to an experienced life time woman business owner. read more
