    Tea Service
    Masayo K.

It is charming establishment with reasonable prices. So, I can't ask too much. During Mother's Day weekend, it appeared to be quite busy. Our waitress was friendly but not so attentive and hard to get attention because the place was busy and understaffed. Additionally, the food presentation for the tea service was rather mediocre. I must admit, I was somewhat disappointed. The sandwiches weren't quite what I expected either; instead of delicate finger sandwiches, they were cut into large triangles with crusts intact, making them a bit cumbersome to eat. Given that it's a tea place, I was hoping for a more authentic tea service experience with regards to the food offered. But they have a great selection of tea. The menu sounds great. I will try other things on the menu next time. Picture of the tea service is for two people.

The second time my daughters and I brought my wife for Mother's Day. Each time was extra special. The clotted cream and the scones and the dainty sandwiches and the tea were all unique and delicious. I guess we had high tea that afternoon. One can order individual gourmet blended tea. Guys, don't let the fancy set up keep you away. Eat there. It's good, and it's good for you. Terrific service and a unique staple of RVC. It's not just for baby showers and Mother's Day!

Food was absolutely amazing' tasty and pretty big portions. I'm glad I went there after so many times I had no luck due always busy. Best to go week days as it was more relaxing than during the weekend. Stuff are friendly and whole ambiance of this place is comfortable. Looking to come back again

Had the most delicious lunch salad!! Great service, great atmosphere. Will definitely be back to try new items!

First time at Chat Noir for dinner. Lovely atmosphere. Food was delicious and nice sized portions. Wine options limited but it was a decent bottle. Waitress overheard us talking about celebrating my birthday and brought a complimentary dessert to table. Enjoyable dinner!

Visited on Father's Day for brunch. Service was good and so was the food. Got a couple of pots of tea that were also enjoyable. Decor is nice and the vibe was very chill.

Really cute and spacious place. Lovely service not just from our waitress but I noticed the other waitress was equally as friendly as well. Really good tea - I almost drank my whole pot! You want good tea do come here. It's December so they were busy. Had a private party in the next room over. Liked the egg sandwich the best. My friend noticed the waitresses didn't match the place in attire - Like leggings with the Nike emblem didn't go well for this - although I loved the colorful hair one of the waitresses had. It would be a cute concept if they were dressed in an English breakfast sort of theme. Did it affect me that they weren't absolutely not. They gave lovely service.

I enjoy coming to chat noir for their tea service and I also like the croque madame. Service has been good for the most part... sometimes the staff is loud and inconsiderate of the costumers when having their own conversations in the dining room. Last time I went they have extremely limited tea selection due to a party which was disappointing

I stopped in after passing by their place for years. I love an original type of eatery. The tea was fantastic and the food was delicious. I chose the Bananas Foster French Toast. After all, Paris is their theme inside and out.

Potatoes au gratin & Brussels. They were delicious. My one piece of advice; If you want to be an upscale American/steakhouse with art deco kind of vibes, jazz nights, etc., they NEED to learn how to make proper cocktails. I ordered a Manhattan. Don't assume bourbon. A traditional Manhattan is made with Rye. It's supposed to be spirit forward with the beautiful sweet vermouth to balance with 2 dashes ango. Express Orange and dress the peel, or not, doesn't matter. Most bartenders drown cocktails, this one included. And NEVER serve in a martini glass :) Nitpicky but only bc I loved everything else. They just need to learn how to make proper cocktails. The details matter! I'll be back for that Snake River Steak!!

This brings us to The James, managed by Joe Giannino under the fat-cat "Standard Hospitality Group," owned by Andrew Affa & Steve Squirtiro. It's hard owning a business and keeping it profitable but not when it's an almost algorithmic formula driven money extraction system so commonly found today. It's more difficult dining out in the world today when it feels like hospitality is vacating. Vining more about high-revenue than humanity. By very definition, I wouldn't call a good portion of the hospitality industry hospitality at all, and I certainly wouldn't say the James offers any. What I love about food is what it does for the soul, & what I've always loved about providing and caring for people is the sense of community; connection during good times and difficult ones alike; That's hospitality to me. Breaking bread is one of the most fundamental human gestures of generosity and true wealth. When you have it, you share it not squander it, not hoard it or treat it like it's something to take from others and line your pockets with. That's why this experience disappointed me so much, because I believe with the myriad of options, we must be far more selective and far more supportive of local and smaller family run establishments. Today, for a table they would still fill and never notice, I tried to cancel a reservation out of respect -- respect for the staff, for other guests, and for my damn self. Being charged a cancellation fee when a mom is sick on Mothers Day, is not hospitality, it is not empathy. It is greed disguised as brand experience self worth. I have supported the Arlo from this same restaurant group in the past and probably would have happily returned too, based on the menu alone, but coldhearted, rigid policies like this change how a place feels. There are many family-run restaurants that understand flexibility and empathy. That kind of environment matters to me, and this experience will forever make me decide to support those places instead. I've recently learned to name positive outcomes when something negative arises, so I believe this time, it's great that it only cost me fifty bucks to never give this group another dime. Typical corporate hospitality is more what the James can offer. These types of COMPANIES feed themselves, not the community.

Lovely hostess, great round bar seating with huge windows for people watching, and a genuinely charming and attentive bartender (Mike). My mom loved her lavender French 75 (a drink special), and my white wine was perfect (the name escapes me at the moment). The garlic soup deserves awards. I first had it two summers ago and still think about it -- I made my mom try it and she immediately understood my rave reviews. For entrées, her burger was cooked perfectly medium-rare, and my fish & chips absolutely hit the spot. Both came with generous portions of house-made fries and an unexpectedly addictive house honey-mustard. We had enough fries for leftovers, and I even asked for extra mustard to take home. Food, service, atmosphere, lighting, noise level -- all dialed in. A 10/10 experience!

The flavors were so perfectly balanced. It taste of the toasted sweet potato gnocchi was something I didn't expect but was pleasantly surprised. Kept it more simple for entrees because the starters were so rich and indulgent. We had the filet mignon and the steak sandwich. Both perfectly portioned and delicious. Ended with the stroopwafel cheesecake, it wasn't too sweet which was nice. The service was great, I love how the manger was so hands on and checking in with tables. The lighting is dim, the ambiance is intimate, and it looks romantic. I had made reservations so we were seated immediately. It's funny to note that the place settings were placed next to each other instead of across from each other at a four person table. We usually prefer to face each other, but when it's Valentine's day why not be cute? We ordered a few drinks during our dinner, the Sugar Plum Fairy, Memere 75, Avion en papier. My favorite was definitely the Avion en papier which had a slightly sweet, slightly bitter, citrusy taste. They had a pre fixe menu for Valentine's Day which unfortunately did not have the steak tartare i was interested in trying. But for $88, you get 3 courses: an appetizer, entree, and dessert. For our appetizers, we got the TARTARE DE THON (tuna tartare) and COCKTAIL DE CREVETTES GEANTES (shirmp cocktail). Between the two, i preferred the tuna tartare. The shrimp cocktail was good, but the only thing really special about it was the massive size of the shrimp and the freshly grated horseradish in the cocktail sauce. For our entrees, we got the CASSOULET DE CANARD and FILET MIGNON. The extremely tender duck leg confit was served with pancetta, white beans, toulouse sausage, and foie gras breadcrumb. It was rich, savory, fatty, and filling. All great words to describe food. The duck leg confit reminded me a little bit of a smoked turkey leg with the red coloring and shreddable texture. The filet mignon was served with pomme purée, wild mushrooms, and a bordelaise sauce. The filet was cooked medium rare as requested, but a bit under salted. The pomme purée aka mashed potatoes tasted like it was 50% butter so it was obviously delicious. Dessert was good, but my least favorite part of the meal. We got the TAHITIAN VANILLA CRÈME BRÛLÉE and the VALRHONA CHOCOLAT POT AU CRÈME. Both were very sweet. The brûlée crust did not shatter well, but it otherwise had a nice creamy texture. The chocolate pot was covered in flaky feuilletine which gave a nice contrast to the creamy chocolate, but my wife found the brandied cherries overpowering. The cherries made me think of German chocolate cake. Service was excellent. Staff was quick to refill water and checked on us constantly. Pace of the meal was relaxed and I'd even say they were slow to bring us the check since we had been dining for over 2 hours. My wife wants me to bring her back for their bottomless brunch on a Sunday so I will eventually be back.

My niece is 20 months old so we just decided we'd let her have some bites of our food. The food took a little bit to come out, but I guess that means it really is made to order. I started off with the French Dip and it had a decent amount of meat on it. The bread was nicely toasted and the Jus was super flavorful. My niece actually liked it a lot and dipped her french fries in it. Even without the Jus the sandwich meat was moist and flavorful while the bread did a good job of soaking up the juices and adding crunch. The burger was also surprisingly good. The patty was actually cooked to medium so it was also juicy and flavorful. Mushroom and swiss is an undefeated combo on burgers provided the meat is good, and in this case the meat was quite good. Both entrees came with some fries and greens which were average. We also had black coffee with our food which was pretty good. It's on the pricier side, but it seems to be reflected in the quality of the food. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this spontaneous meal. I would certainly come back.
