Food came quickly. They came too quick. Its good and bad. We also ordered too much for 4 people. Good price for the food portion but since the food came too quick, we cant eat as fast as the food come. The table isnt that big even we stacked some of them. Food tasted alright. Most seafood has the same garnish and flavouring. The pork belly tasted better than the chicken I would say. The fish was good. Kimchi fried rice?! Just dont order that here. They taste decent but other korean places had it much better. I was disappointed at the okra skewer. She was very attendant and came by to refill our water often and check in on us to make sure our food was good and if we wanted to order more. Along the Main Street of the boutique looking Unionville, this is a small and intimate Chinese BBQ place. There is a lovely wooden interior and cramped seating. Chat bar serves Chuan'r, or Chinese skewers. I've never had Chuan'r before but I was blown away by the experience. The menu may look a little overpriced (and some items were) but the portions were generally larger than expected. You could comfortably order 7-8 dishes for two people. When ordering, you can choose the spice level (warning baseline level is moderately spicy) and the food comes quite quickly due to the excellent service. Food tasted amazing, albeit a little oily. There is a niche drink menu available with some unique drinks. Definitely will return and this is a solid place to go with a group of friends. read more

It's definitely a great place for those late night snacks. But as for dinner, eating here could add up easily. There are many different types of meat skewers to choose from ranging between $6-9. The skewers were served onto a tabletop stone grill to keep them from turning cold. They also offer grilled seafood, soupy dishes, rice dishes and grilled veggies. The meat skewers were good, flavourful, full of spices. I wouldn't recommend the grilled lamb chops and rice cake skewers because they were chewy and tough. Grilled scallops were tasty. What an incredible place. If you've been to Unionville, you'll know that the area has many cute and aesthetic restaurants/cafe's but this one is truly a gem. The restaurant has a very cozy but fancy vibe, dimly lit but there's still enough light to see all of the amazing food served here. The staff were super friendly, greeting every customer, both coming in and leaving. The food was definitely super good and worth the price (which, on that note, wasn't too expensive). We ordered skewers, scallops and a beef noodle soup. The skewers were kind of dry on their own, a dipping sauce definitely would have improved them a lot, and the scallops were very fresh, but I'm not a huge scallop fan so I didn't get to enjoy it fully (but my boyfriend said the texture was really good and chewy, and the seasoning really enhanced the flavour). The beef noodle soup was really flavourful and the beef itself wasn't too tough to chew. We got a little too excited when we were there are it is all tapas. We wanted to try everything annnnd boy the attempt was real Some of my favourites were the honey chicken wings, okra, and DEFINITELY the scallops. Drinks menu is limited but still has the basis. Everything has this dry rub that I do enjoy, however because we ordered too much meat it had basically the same taste in which I needed to cleanse my palette. Been here a few times now, getting takeaway and also dining in. On my most recent visit the service was not amazing, but not too much of a surprise in this day and age (seemed understaffed). The pork belly and lamb skewers are to DIE for and reminds me of the skewers you can find in asian night markets! Seasoned with a blend of cumin, five spice, and pepper, it's super tasty but the downside is that its sprinkled on pretty much everything on the menu! Even the plate of mushrooms I ordered. Although tasty individually, having everything on the table seasoned identically was a bit strange to me. The small heated plate they offer when dining in is supposed to keep your skewers warm, however if you're dining outside, don't expect your food to stay hot for long. Very good tasting skewers in Unionville! We had beef, chicken, lamb and poke-all were very good. They were all tasty without being salty. They placed the cooked skewers on a rock heated by candles to keep it warm which they is king or cool!The service was very friendly and efficient. Ambiance was also very comfortable and inviting. This is a bbq place where there's skewers for a slightly higher price than you'd find at those Asian night markets. However, I totally love the ambience and atmosphere of the tiny space. Very cozy and intimate with dim but sufficient lighting. I sat by a window so lots of sun. Still, I highly recommend this as a date place. It was lamb day for my lunch companion and me so we both got lamb noodles, lamb skewers, and an order of mackerels (3 fish per order, sweet deal). Lamb skewers were great. The garlicky spice was delicious but I'm a huge fan of garlic anyway. They placed the sewers on the slate we had with tea candles lit underneath to warm the food. Not too much fat content so I'd give the skewers 4.9/5. Perf score would be no fat haha! Taste didn't super stand out though. The menu said grilled mackerel so I was expecting it Japanese style but it came out looking like it was grilled in Mordor. The head was so fried/grilled that all that was left is a husk of what used to be a skull. Otherwise, the fish was good. The spice used is the same as the lamb skewer but the taste of the spice was less pronounced and the taste of fish was stronger. Still great. I still would've preferred grilled Japanese style and not like it was dipped in Mordor. Lamb noodles came last. Personally there were too many fat bits in this but they sure gave a lot of lamb chunks for toppings. 3/5. I don't take into account service at Asian places. Service was par: not in your face, didn't ask how the food was. Honestly, I don't care if waiters ask me this stuff anyway. If I were to eat these three again, I'd go in the order of lamb noodles, mackerel, then skewers. Would I recommend? Probably not. Ambience was solid 5/5 but the food was okay. read more

Went here on a Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. & it was pretty quiet with no wait for our table. The concept is mainly meat on a skewer. My friend & I order a handful of different meat skewers such as beef, lamb, pork intestines plus some veggies like king mushrooms, lotus root. Very cool little spot located in the middle of Unionville. Inside is very chill and uses a lot of wood for their design. They mostly serve up snacks of all sorts and limited types of alcohol. 4 of us decided to come and have a bite here on a Friday evening around 9:00 since they open until 2:00 am there was plenty of time. There was no wait when we arrived. We were seated in the area to the left of the hostess stand, apparently they do take away by ordering through the window in this room that opens to the side walk. The service was great super polite and very attentive, the food was also quick. The food we ordered were mostly BBQ skewers without cumin, in general their skewers come with cumin. The food was all generally very tasty and fresh. We got cilantro wrapped tofu skin skewer, pork belly skewers, lamb skewers, chicken skewers, steamed clams with garlic, spicy tripe whole squid tentacles which the server will cut for you, and lastly a couple skewers of BBQ pineapples. Their alcohol situation is limited to mostly beers and few selections of coolers. My cousin mentioned this place earlier and it seemed interesting enough to try. It's been open for only a week. I think there was a Mexican restaurant in this space before. There's a little kiosk at the front of the building with a takeout window that opens up to the sidewalk, making it convenient to grab some food as you stroll by. There's also indoor dining in a rustic setting furnished with thick heavy wooden tables and intimate lighting. Nice. The menu is interesting, with lots of choices of skewered meats, seafood, soups, rice dishes, and more. Even more interesting, they serve just about every part of the animal. For example: pork knuckle; pork skin; chicken heart, chicken gizzard, chicken cartilage; lamb kidney; and more. You get the idea... My dining companion this evening was in heaven but those items don't appeal to my palate so we ordered more conventional dishes - edamame, chicken, pork, and beef skewers, quail, fish, and mushrooms. It's a good thing I love garlic because the mushrooms had LOTS of it. I probably should have had the quail first because it was cold and a little dry by the time I got to it. The skewers were placed on a piece of slate with tea candles under it to keep them warm. Nice touch. The fish was crispy enough to eat the bones and all. The skewers were nicely cooked and tender but the spice (cumin?) was a tad too much from being great. The service was okay. Our server asked about allergies and spice level when taking our order. Good move. Score a point. At the end of our meal, most of the dirty plates were still on the table. Subtract a point. Tonight was cash only because they didn't have their debit/credit system set up yet. I can see the potential of this place and I hope they will only get better. Food fatigue is the worst, especially when you feel like you have eaten too much of the same thing as of late. So I am glad that Chat Bar was a brand new experience for me and a great change of pace. Located on Unionville Main Street - this place is best experienced with a group of friends. Pricing is excellent and while we didn't order the show stopping scallops; I do highly recommend the garlic steamed clams as one of the better bang for your buck. My favourite skewers are the beef, chicken skin. pork belly and the rice cake. But I suspect that the lamb is excellent as well. Best way to experience- order 3 to 4 varieties and see your skewers stack up on the stone plate in front of you. Note: you can choose your spice level - we usually go no spice these days ( I simply can't handle it anymore). But be aware that the seasoning is very very heavy on the cumin. Other dishes - Eggplant in Garlic Sauce- don't miss this one. The enoki mushroom version is similar and the aforementioned clams and scallops on a half shell. One key note - all four dishes use the same garlic sauce - so my picks would be order one veggie (eggplant and either the scallop or clams) don't order all four as all four have a similar taste profile. read more

Came here on a Friday night and the restaurant was packed. We had to wait 10-15 mins for a table. The waiting area is this small cozy area where you can self serve yourself some water and candy. The actual restaurant is pretty small, so there is limited seating. This restaurant is self-order menu, so they gave you a sheet of paper and you pick what you want. With every order, you get a free small side appetizer. I personally didn't like the dish too much, it was too bland and had no flavour. We ordered the Braised Pork on Rice ($7.95). Amazing flavours for a cheap price! And we got the Noodles in Lamb Soup. This dish was a little bland, it needed more flavour, but the lamb was good. Finally, we ordered the lamb skewers (4pcs for $5.95). Best. Lamb. Skewers I've had in a very long time! Amazing flavours and great spices. This place is quite popular for late night eats and we've ordered take-out for this prior so we wanted to give this place a try in person. The dining capacity isn't very big and also quite dark inside with just simple candle light with wooden seats and chair. Not baby friendly if you need to change or have a seat for your little one as heads up. We were sharing with my bro and his gf so the orders will seem quite a bit. We've ordered up a storm: 1x Boneless Lamb Ribs ($8.70) - The seasoning is very similar to all other skewers with the cumin and spices and tasted very similar to lamb skewers to be honest 1x Pork Belly ($8.20) - Again same seasoning and the pork belly was cooked well done so its a good pick in general. 1x Chicken Wings w/Honey Sauce ($8.20) - The above choices and here is 4x pcs by the way and this was standard to be honest, nothing stood out about it. 2x Enoki Mushroom ($7.80 each) - Its basically wrapped in a tin foil with garlic, fresh chilli and green onion. The flavour on this one was very tasty and garlicky. Mind you enoki is very cheap at grocery stores, so this item is very profitable for the restaurant. 3x Coriander in Bean Curd Skin ($20.10 for 3x) - Again the flavour is similar to the skewer and it had a dry chew taste to it, I thought it was okay, but for cilantro veggie lovers, they may enjoy this one. 2x Eggplant ($15.60 for 2 = $7.80 each) - Same taste and stuff as the enoki but you basically get 2x pieces of eggplant cut in halves and the garlic, fresh red chilli and green onion. Nice taste as well. 1x Cheese Sweet Potato ($7.70) -Basically mash sweet potato with melted cheese. Tasty dish! 2x Baked Clam w/garlic ($23.40 for 2 = $11.70 each) - Same flavour taste like the eggplant or enoki mushroom. The sauce is definitely good to put on rice or something. The clam meat were not that plumpy but again good flavour. 1x Spicy and Sour Vermicelli ($11.70) -Not crazy spice as we picked medium I believe. The vermicelli was nicely cooked and easy to slurp and chew and came with some minced meat and peanuts. 1x Braised Pork on rice ($12.70) - Chopped up cube braised pork meat was okay with some bok choy possibly. Overall this is a good place to eat late night bar tapa style food. Music is a bit loud so hard to have a conversation, but the staff were attentive when needed. Worth a visit for sure! read more

The pork was perfectly cooked and tender, the lamb was a tad gamey but still good, and the chicken hearts were good although wish they weren't so thinly sliced. Each order comes with 4 skewers, would love if they had an option to have 2 skewers per order so you can have more of a variety. We also had their grilled scallop with vermicelli topped with minced garlic and green onions and that was super flavorful! The scallops were a bit small but the flavor bomb made up for it. Open till 2am, it's a prime example of Markham's expanding night life. Located on Main Street Unionville, finding parking is always hit or miss. We were seated quickly in the dimly lit dining area. Ordering on a sheet of paper, there's a variety of rice bowls and skewers to choose from. Once the order is placed and arrives to the table, they're placed on a thin plank that's heated by candles which was a cool method of keeping it warm. The pork, lamb, and beef skewers all had a similar flavour of the northern Chinese dry rub that is a personal favourite. They were moist and for ~$3/skewer, it was fair in terms of size and quality. Super yum! As for the braised pork belly, I was happy with the portion. The braised pork was accompanied with pickled radish which was a nice compliment. Overall, good food and an intimate ambiance. We forgot to reserve a seat for the group so they said it would be a 40 minute wait... we werent hangry yet so we decided to wait. It was almost 1.5 hrs later and we still werent seated because we had to wait for this ONE table that would fit us all. The hostess said they paid for the bill almost 30 minutes ago and were just hanging around talking. It was super annoying because they said it was "store policy" that they couldn't kick them out or even start clearing the tables... I mean seriously, there should be a maximum seating period, like all other busy restaurants, especially on a Friday night. If we left without sitting, you would've lost a lot of business, just because your other clients wanted to hang around after eating and paying... The food was good though. Skewers came quickly and were perfectly spiced. Some of the waiters and waitresses didn't know a lot of English so we didn't know what was given half the time and it was hard asking for napkins and utensils. The garlic eggplant was delicious and very flavourful. Gizzards were nice and chewy. Marbled pork was juicy and tender. Lamb and beef were good too. Kidney had this irony aftertaste and didnt sit too well on the tongue. Quail was a little bony but flavoured well. Everything here was amazing, from the rly nice ambience, ultra polite service, decorations, relaxing playlist and the food was fantastic. The whole place was a vibe, it felt like being snuggled up in your favorite warm blanket in a cozy cottage while enjoying the best lamb skewers markham has to offer. The Service was also super polite and cute as well! They even offered to hold umbrellas to us on the way to our car cause it was raining outside! The whole experience was wonderful and honestly inspired me to create similar experiences in my own life to share with others. I would actually give this 4.5 star and I gave it 5 instead cause 3.5 star is totally underrated. If it could be slightly cheaper it is definitely a 5 star. Cozy little place for some legit Chinese BBQ skewers. Lovely ambient! Great spot to chill with friends for some late night bites especially when they close at 2am. For meat I would recommend chicken cartilage, marbled pork and grilled sausage. For veggie, eggplant, enoki mushroom and chives are delicious. The minced pork cold noodle is pretty yummy too. They have a rather large menu where you can tick off how many of each you want. Depending on the menu item, each order is about 2-4 skewers each. They range from many different meats, seafood, and vegetables plus other big dishes to share with others. When dine in was open, the skewers come out on a platter heated by small candles which keep the food warm, a welcome service especially when the patios are open. Now with takeout, they deliver them in twisted bags which still keep the food warm. The seasoning is amazing at this place! Skewers I recommend: lamb, chicken hearts, okra, pork belly. read more

Overall it has a good vibe for a casual night out with friends. Food: Ordered beef skewer, rice cake skewer, pork rice bowl and eggplant. The food quality is okay but I found that most of the dishes catered to spicy eaters. Since I'm not a fan of spicy food, I didn't like the rice cake. The texture was good though. The eggplant dish was way too oily. After I ate one, I couldn't finish it. The portion for this dish is big but its so oily that it makes you feel like you are eating oil. The pork rice bowl was okay but also on the oily side. Nothing special. Beef skewer was okay, nothing special. Overall, food is okay but nothing wow that would entice me to come again. This is a small restaurant but pretty cozy. There aren't many seats so there was a wait time around 8PM (20 minutes for me) but they take down your number so you can walk around Main Street. Although there were a decent amount of workers, it was hard to get someone's attention and due to the noise, there were some miscommunication at times. Service was also a bit slow and they don't give you water unless you ask (?). The price is average for the location. Spicy Beef Noodle Soup- The beef was very tender and tasty. The noodles were as expected. The broth was alright but it was not spicy as indicated (it also does not taste like the typical Taiwanese style beef noodle soup). This dish was not bad but I'd probably choose to try something else next time. Lamb/ Chicken Skewers- Four sticks. These were good and I would order these again. They use a dry rub with a mix of spices which elevated both types of skewers (very flavorful and fragrant). There was tenderness in each bite. They have three levels for spiciness and medium was not spicy at all. Grilled Short Ribs- Two sticks with two ribs on each stick. These were okay but I probably wouldn't order these again.
