Newbury Lock and the Kennet and Avon Canal bisect the pretty town center of Newbury. Completed in…read more1810, the canal was used to carry iron, coal, stone, agricultural goods and many other products to and from London and into the West Country. You can still see the site of the former Lock Cottage, built in 1796 but sadly destroyed by fire in 1989 and later demolished as unsafe. The suroundings are just water, water everywhere - basins, streams, overflows and the canal itself, bordered by green vegetation, quaint old buildings, St Nicolas Church and the Lock Stock and Barrel pub. Walk out along the towpath in either direction as far as your little leggs will carry you, or just wander around the Locks area for a lovely and different perspective of Newbury town centre.

Abbey, or Abbey National as it was previously known has recently been taken over by Santader - a…read morelarge European banking institution. However currently this hasn't affected any of it's problems and neither of the accounts I have with the Abbey have been a concern. The branch is very small, and they have occupied this location for years, however it is user friendly for those who are disabled, and generally smiling assistants faces can be seen adoring the place. My main complaint is when you withdraw money and they advise rather loudly the amount you are taking out - not the most pleasing thing when all and sundry are stood around you! Abbey offer a range of financial products from current accounts to Mortgages and loans.
