This place from the outside and inside is pretty cool looking. The outside is in red with big windows. The inside has lots of seating and a rustic feel and chalk boards. Unfortunately the food wasn't as good as the place looks, which is what matters, to me anyway. We ordered the chicken sandwich ($12) and quarter chicken dinner ($14) with a breast/wing and poutine ($6 up charge). For a $20 plate I expected it to be much more than what it was. The chicken was barely warm and although there was a little bit of seasoning on it, the breast/wing tasted pretty plain. The poutine was good with the right amount of cheese curds (although they were cold and squeakless) and gravy, but the chicken was a total let down. The concept of the chicken rotating over the hot charcoal sounds great, but the execution is poor with hardly any flavor. The $12 chicken sandwich was also disappointing, with a mix of tasteless dark and white meat, and far too much bun. They have three sauces on the side, mild (very plain with little taste), spicy (the best one), and extra spicy (far too hot). We also ordered a flavored water, mango mint with vodka. They didn't have mango so they gave us strawberry without even asking if it was okay. $9 for that drink. read more

Simple, classic roasted chicken with amazing fries and great service. What else do you want? (Well better AC when it's 35C outside) It gets warm in here with the roaster being right there. We were seated promptly and the menu is short and concise but still offers a good selection. We ordered and received our food promptly. The chicken was so moist and delicious. Great flavors. They cook the chicken over charcoals right in the restaurant behind the register. The puri puri sauce was spicy and not my favorite but still good. Excellent marketing and branding attracts customers to this restaurant. I have no idea how this place is rated so high, perhaps people have no taste buds. Went to the cashier, then told to sit anywhere. The interior is nice. The service is great. I ordered a caesar salad based on the photos posted on here and this was up sold to add chicken to it. I even asked if the chicken is good. When the chicken caesar salad came, it is a huge portion. Not bad for $17. The chicken was cold. Like barely tepid. I have worked at a chicken restaurant and we have ever served chicken salad completely cold. The manager was accommodating and offered to make a new one. I declined as I hate wasting food, but asked if I could remove the chicken off the plate. Caesar salad is pretty decent considering, lots of bacon, nice slices of parmesan, adequate dressing and buttery croutons. Piri piri sauce sucked. Will never return. I'm Canadian and I love my poutines! After hearing word the labanquise is one of the best poutines in Montreal and trying it, I kinda found a new favourite. Charred has the best poutines I ever had. Mixing piri piri and poutine with rotisserie chicken is unbelievable! How could something be this good! I'm so glad I found this place thanks to yelp. My boyfriend and i was looking for a place for lunch and stumbled across Charred Chicken! We didn't know what to expect but it turned out amazing! The quantity of food you get for the price is so reasonable! The chicken noodle soup was light, the noodles felt homemade and the chicken breast was filling. The house salad was delicious as it was evenly tossed with the house balsamic dressing. Not to mention, the portion was great for sharing! Note: If you cannot deal with heat, this probably isn't the best place to dine in. It was quite hot in the dining room, so they need to turn up their AC or get some fans in there! Food - 4/5 Service - 3/5 When I first arrived, half the tables were unoccupied in this small restaurant, so I assumed that we were to be seated right away, but I was wrong. Apparently, on a Saturday for dinner, they had a 'list'. When I asked how many groups were ahead of me, there was only 1 name on that list. In any event, we were told to come back in 30mins. No problem. There were maybe 6-7 tables in total, most sat 2ppl. So this place is quite small. Walked around the area and came back more than 30mins later to find that there were at least 2 empty tables. Never got a call, so perhaps they were too busy/I arrived just before they were going to call. Whatever the case may be, they have to work on a better method of seating people or they may lose paying customers. Food arrived in a relatively short time. If you're in a group of 3-4 people, the whole chicken w/ 3 sides for $30 is probably the best value. If you're doing a takeout, the whole chicken is only $15, so that's even better than dining in! Chicken was extremely tender, sides (fries, potatoes, & salad) were really good. Initially, soon after our food came, the server sorta came often then slowed his roll. Charred Chicken is a restaurant that I heard from a friend of mine, who heard from another friend who then heard from another friend (and I hope you know where I'm going). With that being said, hearing about this place through word of mouth convinced me to give this unique restaurant a try. This restaurant is located on James Street, which is a bit of a walk from Main unless you take the 2 bus up to Barton. But I can rest assure you - it's definitely worth the trip. I came into this restaurant for the first time back in June 2016. Two friends and I came in at around 7PM on a Wednesday and we were told that there weren't any seats available. We decided to walk down the street and we were given a call as soon as a table cleared up for us, which took about 20 minutes. We didn't mind waiting since there are a lot of cute boutiques as you walk down the street towards Main. After sitting down, the first thing we noted was that the menu is quite small. They offer multiple types of chicken meals, however we had no idea how to tell them apart. The great thing about this restaurant is that the waitress who served us was extremely helpful and informative. She made it easier for us to pick what we wanted based on what we told her, and even offered to give samples of their famous piri piri sauce to test out the spiciness. This made me feel comfortable to ask for anything that I needed later on in the night without feeling like such a burden. Waiting for the food took about twenty minutes. We sat close to the BBQ and it was pretty neat seeing how the chicken is cooked and prepped. There was quite a bit of smoke, but this only lasted about five or ten minutes, which my friends and I didn't mind. The meal that I got was the quarter leg and thigh with a side of fries. Everything about the meal was great! The chicken pieces were extremely juicy, the piri piri sauce was quite addictive (I asked for a second serving of it without hesitation) and the side portions were extremely big. The fries were thin, crispy and flavourful and were probably the most notable part of my dinner. My friends got the salad and they really appreciated how large the portion was. The leaves were fresh, the sauce wasn't thick and it blended perfectly with the chicken and sauce. The staff and the overall environment was excellent! I loved the concept of the open BBQ and the washrooms were clean to use. It is quite a small restaurant, having only about 10 tables, but I guarantee you that this is worth your money! I would recommend this place to anyone that wants to try a more "amped-up" version of the Swiss Chalet famous quarter chicken meal (for the same price of course). read more

Charred was great when they first opened. The chicken Caesar salad was super yummy and fresh and a good sized portion.. For the past 4 or 5 times I've been there the chicken has tasted "old" and "not fresh". The only way to disguise the old taste is to smother it in piri piri sauce. My friend witnessed them getting the chicken for the salad from a heating rack or drawer under the work station....it was stacked with cut up chicken! Maybe that explains the "old" taste...who knows how long it's been sitting there being kept warm.. Gross! And now they're charging over $20 for a chicken caesar salad! Ordered delivery this evening and can definitely say that quantity over quality would be a solid description of Charred. Caesar salad with chicken was very bland, almost as if they stuck generic Caesar dressing in with no lemon or pepper. Regular poutine was covered in hot sauce for some reason, and the fries were way over cooked and soggy. Portions were enormous to say the least, but I'd much rather have a small portion with tlc, than massive portions of bland over cooked food. After a 4.5 hour bike ride from Toronto to Hamilton, my friend and I were starving and ready to stuff our faces and indulge in some delicious food. I'm so glad we picked this place! We ordered the whole chicken with three sides (French fries, garden salad and potatoes). The food came, I kid you not, 3 minutes after we ordered. And it did not disappoint. The french fries were plentiful and crispy whereas the garden salad was light and fresh. The potatoes were a bit underwhelming and tasted boiled - wish we opted for the rice side instead. Finally, the chicken....mmmm. I am going to be craving that chicken now. It was better than Nandos piri piri chicken which says a lot considering I absolutely adore Nandos. I highly recommend this place. This place is very good and pulls no punches about what it offers and does well. While enjoying my meal (more on that later) I watch as they prepared and cooked the chicken over a charcoal fire. They basted it and grilled it to perfection right in front of me, then cut it and served it. It smells like chicken heaven in here. I had the Poutine and added the chicken of course. Restaurants that hand you a short and focused menu are making a bold statement... "We create a few things, exceptionally well." CHARRED CHICKEN (at 244 James St. N, Hamilton) hands you an excitingly short menu when you walk in... To be met with this confidence is very promising. Nearly all of the dishes revolve around their widely-celebrated, signature Portugese-Style Roasted Chicken. I was brimming with excitement to be seated with my partner, along with our good friend, who's Birthday we were celebrating. In our experience, unfortunately, Charred's bold confidence is not warranted because they could not meet 2 very basic principles of cooking, in a territory that is easily delicious and straight-forward: #1. Chicken needs to be seasoned. A little salt travels a long way. The signature chicken looks incredible... it looks deliciously savoury, but unfortunately the taste is disappointingly bland, with the exception of the dominant charcoal footprints over which it is roasted. Imagine for a moment... the enthusiastic barbecuing intentions of your joyous "Holiday Uncle" eagerly clacking a set of tongs, trusted to supervise a bed of flaming charcoal... unfortunately forgetting all about the salt, pepper, seasonings, and timing, yet whom proudly rings the dinner bell when the chicken "looks about right". I can't fail to mention Charred's "Piri Piri" Sauce, which absolutely gives a welcome kick to the chicken, by adding a nice depth of flavour that can only be described as the "Deus ex Machina dipping sauce". The sauce has clearly become a crutch on which they try to claim, "our chicken doesn't need to be seasoned before roasting because of this Piri Piri sauce! See?!!... We sell this sauce in bottles." #2. Temperatures Matter. The cheese curds for a poutine need to be closer to room temperature in order for them to melt when the gravy is poured over... 'Fridge-cold' curds don't work. I was turned off when Charred's curds were cold on the tongue and not melted to any degree. The forkful was overwhelmingly salty on account of the clearly canned gravy. It didn't help that these tiny twig-fries were held under a heat lamp for far too long, nor hot enough to make everything come together in Poutine-goodness. To my Montreal-Friends... I truly do apologize. Our recently innovative Hamilton restaurants are capable of much better fare, and I hope you will give us another chance. I would've shared some immediate feedback with Charred, if our server had come by at all within 20 minutes after our dishes were on the table. Maybe we visited on an unusually quiet and windy night, but a couple of critical principles of cooking were not respected, regardless of the number of tables booked or the weather that Sunday. I truly wanted to love this place... I wanted to talk about bringing more friends to CHARRED... Restaurants with a small menu often scream, "Sit down and taste what we can do!!". However, the message here is, instead: "Pick up a ready-to-eat chicken from Fortinos, or roast one easily for yourself for a fraction of the price!" CHARRED CHICKEN could have easily been a stalwart winner on James St. North... Unfortunately, they need to realize that cutting corners is bad news for both the restaurant and the guests. It doesn't help that the side dishes - however generous in portions - are prepared hours ahead of time, then solely sprinkled with green onions to imitate freshness. Re-focus on what you claim to be good at, which is fresh and delicious barbecue chicken. If you can create this exceptionally well, your guests will be the ones to make the bold statements on your behalf. read more

OK Im sorry but I have to put Charred on blast. The piece quarter chicken was very small and incredibly was cooked previously and then re-heated upon ordering. It arrived semi-cool on the inside and was not juicy due to it sitting prior to reheating. I would have thought for the prices they charge that they would at least cook to order. Maybe they normally do, maybe it was just the time of day who knows but I certainly did not get a cooked to order piece. The side was plain white rice, think uncle bens, and a hard piece of bread that I couldn't get more than a bite into. The peri-peri hot sauce for dipping was decent and was a life saver because the chicken lacked any real flavour and was definitely under seasoned. The salad was your basic vinaigrette snoozer that was pretty much just cucumber slices on bagged greens same as you can get anywhere. Definitely was not impressed at all by this place and expected more after reading the reviews and paying over $30 with tip for a meal I could have done a better job of at home for $10. Service was excellent which was pretty much the only thing saving this place from getting a 1 star. Conclusion: Maybe I went on an off day however to me this is just another over-rated James St North restaurant that makes you scratch your head over what all the raving is about. read more

I ended up waiting for over an hour and my order was still not ready. The staff their was rude and did not care that I've been waiting. This place was really good in my opinion. The server sat is quickly and was very attentive. Our food came out fast as well. We shared a poutine and chicken burger and both were fresh, hot and came out fast. They have options of peri peri sauce we tried spicy and strange spicy. The spicy sauce was great not to hot but lots of flavour. The extra spicy was quite a bit spicier and a lot more flavour. I would try them both again depends on what item I would be pairing with. We're from Texas, here in Hamilton on business trip. Was yelping restaurants near our hotel and Charred had good reviews so thought we would give it a try. So glad we did! Poutine which I was so excited about trying, was excellent. Chicken was moist and juicy. The rice was also a winner. Typically I wouldn't try plain rice but glad I did because the rice was seasoned so well. My husband had chicken noodle soup and I had matzo ball soup (first time to try). Both were delicious. By far one of the best in Hamilton! Simple concept of roasted chicken with a relatively small menu, they definitely nailed all aspects of it! The chicken, even if you get a thigh or breast or leg, is truly tender and cooked perfectly with the right amount of seasoning and wasn't at all dry! Plus, they give you a side of their piri-piri sauce of various spiciness, and honestly the "very-spicy" had just the right amount of kick and flavour to accompany the chicken. The charred chicken sandwhich also had a sufficient amount of chicken and was not overpowered by the peppers or cheese on it. I was also super impressed with the sides, that came in large portions. The roasted potatoes were seasoned well and weren't overly dry or crispy. The fries came in a huge portion and were perfectly fried. We ordered a house salad which unfortunately came with a large amount of carrots opposed to lettuce, but it still came in a huge portion enough to feed 3-4 people comfortably.
