What the heck happened to Charlotte street computers? Did they change owners? I used them in the past (so, pre covid) for various things and always had great service. This time, I needed a MacBook Air battery looked at (and a Pro, but we never got that far). I was told it'd be $107 per device just for a diagnosis. Not ideal, but how much it would actually cost to replace the battery? "I dunno." Seriously? After pushing, the guy reluctantly went to check, making it clear I was inconveniencing him. He came back with a quote--for the wrong model--then told me they couldn't provide an estimate for my specific machine. So, to be clear: I could pay $107, get hit with a sky-high repair cost, and still walk away needing a battery? And you can't even give me a ballpark figure? "Yep." Moved to Asheville 24 years ago and not long after met a young man named Craig who started this gig. Best shop in town. For over a decade as my company grew, we sent all of our machines here for service and repair, and we bought our macs strictly from CSC. Its changed owners at least once or twice since then, and i closed my last company in 2014. I still went back in 2018 to purchase the iMac Pro when it was new, and again in 2019 to purchase a macbook. Then in 2024 I brought in a laptop. Lets see... 1. They had no record of my existence as a past customer who had spent over $30K over a 20+ year period. Contrary to the old days, the individual receiving my computer and taking my information was largely tech illiterate. He didn't understand apple, he was extremely slow (typed one key at a time using index fingers), and despite repeating my information 4 times, still input the wrong name, phone number and email into the system. I considered leaving then - but my preference is always to support small local businesses, and I thought I was being a good citizen. 2. It's all about the diagnostic fee. In the old days I'd have a brainy tech call me up and discuss what was taking place, options and opinions. In this case, I get a call telling me I need a new screen. Knowing this wasn't correct, I pushed back and got serious attitude. I mean - WOW. Took it to (another business) and they were friendly, smart, adaptable and fixed it for $400 less (it was a connector, not the screen itself). In summary, I guess if you just want to buy a computer, or if you have a PC, go here. Hi. It's me. I'm the problem it's me. My phone which was brand new was stuck on a unavailable screen. No option for erasing and locked out of a pass code. After about 10 apple care calls (5 of them dropped), 20 restarts, 6 restores, and a million sigh-almost-cries I called up Charlotte street. They're kind of a legend around here even though I haven't been to them before I knew they were trusted by many. I asked if they could restore my phone even though I had tried with Apple and it seemed like there was no answer. They assured me they could and that typical restores were about $50. Called another place which will not be named and it started at $89 and that was "if all it needed was a restore" When I called them back to say I was on my way, they did warn me I was cutting it close to time because it was already a little after 5 PM. I rushed but didn't make it there until 5:52 PM. When I walked in I said "I'm the worst. If you have to tell me to wait till tomorrow that's OK." Tom already had my issue printed out and he took one look at me and said "I got you let's go". Might've been because he was feeling empathetic after hearing my deflated tone and helplessness seeping through on our call. On a related note, I do not recommend nor do I condone my behavior of arriving this late. It is totally rude and if they had told me no it would have in no way impacted my rating. Respect. Anyway, Tom Q was stellar. He knew exactly what to do he didn't shame me at all (still not sure if it was a phone glitch or me glitch) and he got me up and running in about 25 minutes. He was communicative of the process the whole way, and very approachable in general. All of the staff were Happy and kind. If I have any more issues- and I hope that I don't- then I will definitely take them here. I'm sitting in the parking lot now waiting for my phone to completely restore. Since I moved to the Asheville area I have utilized Charlotte Street Computers multiple times and have always found them friendly, skillful and efficient. Something has changed in the last 2 weeks. I believe there must be new ownership though the man managing the desk is very evasive about giving information. Half the store is curtained off, all the apple devices are gone from the walls and shelves and the sectioned off half has brown paper on the windows. Odd merchandise seems to be displayed on the shelves, such as clothes. The man at the desk said they are diversifying. When I called a day prior to going to the store, I was told to come in so that they could complete an incomplete data transfer on my iphone. When I went in person, the man at the desk took forever to find my ticket and then went to the back for a while. When he returned he said I could leave a note and that they were having a hard time keeping apple technicians. This store is no longer what it was and I have no idea what it is now, but it has a very bad vibe. Sad. Charlotte street computers used to be a place you could count on. read more

I'm not sure what's going on with these guys. My husband has been a 10+ year customer and always thought really highly of their team and servies but this latest experience will probably be our last. The horrible customer service and lack of communication was surprising compared to the past. We dropped a broken iphone off to be sent in for repair/replacement. No invoice emailed after drop off as promised. No shipping notice. We called at least 15 times over the course of the week to get an update but the phone calls weren't being answered. Finally we reached someone today who told us, "we've done nothing with the phone, you should just come pick it up." They suggested taking the phone to a store in Weaverville but after calling that place does not offer the service we brought it to CSC for. Bum recommendation. Upon pick up it took 15-20 minutes for them just to find where they had put the phone. Big waste of time. read more

Never again. Charlotte Street was my go to for purchasing and repair for a couple decades, but new ownership has been hard at work destroying good will and staff morale. Dropped off my unit for repair-and it never moved to the next step (bench test/evaluation, determination it needed to be sent to apple, actually sending it to Apple) until I went back to the shop to ask what was going on. All together, it took almost a month to have a functioning computer. When finally reaching the owner (also had to go to the shop, never got a returned call) I heard about the difficulty of keeping experienced staff, how hard their life has been, and an assortment of other complaints that had nothing to do with the issue at hand- that whatever system used to keep a machine moving forward through the repair process was repeatedly failing. If you don't need your computer for a month *and* enjoy going into the store regularly, by all means- give them a try. read more

I can not sing the praises of these guys enough. My IMAC was trashed by UPS in a shipping fro, CA. The screen and back metal frame were cracked and bent. In 48 hours they had it repaired and managed to use my Apple Safe account to save me $. I am grateful, thrilled, and ecstatic with the results. I am horrified by the offensive, patronizing, and unprofessional treatment I received at this ill-run establishment. I brought in my MacBook Pro requesting its battery be replaced, as I had gotten an internal alert that it needed repair. They shipped it off to an Apple facility several states away because my model is an older version that they didn't have the parts for in-house. Two weeks later, I picked it up and paid $400 in replacement parts and labor costs. I brought it home and it worked fine for about a day. It stayed plugged in on my desk for basic tasks and I did nothing in the interim that would've jostled or damaged it. A day later, I tried to turn it on but it completely blacked out, save a bizarre set of streaks on the screen. I tried every variation of restarting it, unplugging and replugging it, but after several hours, nothing came on the screen except for flashing lines of colors. This persisted for the next two days so I brought it into the store to explain the issue. They agreed to run a diagnostic test to see what hadn't been properly fixed. However, when they called me a few hours later, they reported there was a screen display issue that would cost an additional $700 for them to repair. I couldn't redeem my alleged 90-day warranty on the parts I had paid for because they claimed it was a new, separate issue that wasn't their fault. Not only could I not get a refund for the previous sketchy work they claimed to have done on my battery (that was yet to be proven to adequately work beyond a couple of hours), but they demanded I pay nearly the cost of a new computer to fix a fresh issue that my laptop never had trouble with in my six years of owning it before I lent it to them. I understand that mistakes are sometimes made, but I shouldn't have to pay over a thousand dollars for those mistakes. Ultimately, what was even more abominable is the way I was treated by their staff when I returned the following day in person to express my rightful concern about my situation. I calmly asked to talk with a manager and began to explain this series of events to the man in front of me. As I spoke, he didn't make eye contact with me for even a second, choosing instead to browse the internet before repeatedly interrupting me, then entirely cutting me off mid-story. My experience continued to not be taken seriously by this disrespectful staff member, who, after my lengthy explanation, sarcastically told me with a shrug and an eye roll that "issues don't just arise out of nowhere," insinuating that I had personally done something to damage my computer and was lying about my device. This felt incredibly sexist and gross, considering that I am a young woman and highly doubt an older man would receive this same treatment. Nevertheless, I expressed firmly that I would either accept a refund or for them to repair your mistake at no additional cost. He refused. I am appalled by this company's complete disregard for quality work or customer satisfaction, not to mention their rudeness and predatory tactics. They drained hundreds of dollars from me only for my laptop to break hours after I picked it up from their store. Their technicians took zero responsibility for the damage to my computer, even as I politely explained again and again what happened. Although this issue clearly resulted while it was in their hands or in the repair facility states away, they attempted to gaslight me into thinking I had somehow damaged my own computer in the few hours I had used it in my home and gave no apology for the massive inconvenience or courtesy offer to remedy their wrongdoing. They were friendly, efficient, knowledgable, honest, and exceeded my expectations on every level. Brian, the service tech who worked on my computer kept me up to date on the status and what the costs would be. and the front desk people--Jesus and another gentleman whose name I don't recall--were SO GOOD with their people skills in dealing with me. I took my AirPods Pro in for an issue that I wasn't sure was covered by warranty. I had no receipts to prove date of purchase, but they told me they could still help me. I am really disappointed with my service from this store. I took my laptop in to get a new hinge, I thought this would be easily fixed. The problem was not fixed so I took it back again and after one day of getting it back the problem was worse than it was, I am really frustrated because I paid them to fix the problem and it was not resolved. Basically tried to bribe me to get fast service. Apple Care sent me to CSC for a dying battery in a Mac book air. The person at the service desk told me there were 15-20 computers ahead of me, and it would be 48 hours before a diagnostic could be done. But if I paid a $50 rush fee the diagnostic could happen right now. Even if the diagnosis was the same as what apple care found, it would be another 3 days for the parts. I left with a bad taste in my mouth. Went to City Mac, and they ran the diagnostic immediately. Then offered to remove the battery so we could use the computer while waiting for the 2 days the part arrival would take. All super pleasant and friendly. My homebuilt computer was not working well, and my attempts to find the cause of my "blue screen of death" and other issues was not working. So I called Charlotte Street Computers. They have a diagnostic fee which can be applied to your repair/installation. The issue was a video card. My tech, Tim S. suggested I buy one, so I would get the factory warranty. This meant I would be able to shop around and get the best deal- no markup for their store. He installed the card, tested it, cleaned the inside of my incredibly dusty box, all the while keeping in constant contact with me to let me know what was going on, and what my option were. I've got the exact same problem w my older 27" iMac, after three times of taking it to Charlotte Street Computers. Problem = After turning iMac on and logging in, the screen would go black - sometimes 10 minutes into use, sometimes 2 minutes or less. There was a non-refundable $96 diagnostic fee each time taken in. After first visit, they said motherboard was problem and I purchased a new one ($300). But during next month problem still occurred, so I took it back to CSC. This time they said display was probably bad and they replaced it with one they switched from another iMac. This worked properly for even less time, and I took it back again. On third visit, they said the last switched display was probably bad and switched to another one (3rd $ 96 fee). After getting it back, four months since initial diagnosis, the screen STILL went black after a few minutes or less of being on. CSC never found the solution or cause of problem it seems. Spent $500 or $600, and it's still inoperable. Frustrating, expensive and disappointing to have no success after three visits to Charlotte Street Computers with same problem. read more

Worst customer service I've experienced in my life. Over the years we've purchased several computers, iPads, and countless accessories from CSC. Not one time have I asked for a discount or anything for free. Today my wife and I took her old iPhone and her laptop computer in to try and save some voicemails from our deceased son from the phone to the computer. The first young man we encountered was very helpful and successfully transferred the first of two, then either the owner or manager, a woman, came over and told him to stop and informed my wife she'd have to pay to have someone do it. We'd also have to leave both devices. These voice mails are precious to us and we won't leave the devices nor do we think charging good customers for a service such as this is appropriate. I walked over to discuss it with the lady. I explained all I've explained above. Her response "I can't understand why people will pay $40 to have their dogs assholes squeezed but won't pay for service here." I told her that was completely inappropriate. We've come to City MAC and are having a completely different experience. Even though we've never bought a single product here they have completed the service and are spending time explaining to my wife how to do this thing safely. City Mac for the win. These guys know what they're doing in every way and on every topic: products, service, and instruction. I bought a 27" Mac from them two months ago and have been attending their classes, which are free for a year. Classes are small, generally no more than five people, which allows time for questions on everything covered, as well as suggestions of where to go on the Web for more information. Outside the classroom, staff is equally knowledgeable and helpful; there's not the slightest bit of pressure to buy and they will stay with you while you're using different apps and getting a feel for the computer(s) or leave you be if you don't have any questions. I've also had a five year old MacBook Air and a ten year old Mac desktop serviced at Charlotte Street Computers, and I was more than satisfied with their work and their price. I took my laptop in day before yesterday, and long story short it's cheaper to get a new computer through no fault of Charlotte Street, poor Amazon buying decisions after some rosé. For this stage in my life I'm making my way back to the good side and decided that after acquiring my iPhone a few months back I was ready for an iPad. Now unlike bigger cities like Charlotte that have MAC stores, the Paris of the South lacks such a corporate prescence...............but then again we have CSC. This weekend was a particular draw as the back to school sale tax breaks allowed me to purchase and nice little later model iPad (new of course), warranty program, and a few other side items all saving me about $100+ plus. Throw in that the the competitor on the other side of town didn't have what I was looking for in their stock, CSC got my business. I drove up, walked in, and folks greeted me asked me what assistance I needed....provided a few recommendations and checked me out. A great little store. Our 2008 MacBook Pros (one 13" the other 15") are STILL GOING STRONG due to the expert care, concern, knowledge of the Charlotte Street Computer staff under the unwavering support of their founder, owner Jennifer Mayer. We've had warranty repairs and after warranty work. NOTE: we bought our machines in Greenville, SC but that never mattered. With CSC, we've upgraded, tuned up, and had malware removed (several times) and on my 16". the mother-board got replaced twice (at no cost to me). Today I just returned from another mini tune up and I'm a very happy camper! We love out Apple products and can't figure out WHY we waited till 2008 to leave the PC's forever and go MAC. We were replacing PC's every three years or so as they all crashed and burned. Although there now are a few other places to buy and get macs repaired.... no-one can compete with the talent at CSC. My computer has been in what I thought was dire straights a few times. NEVER did any staff suggest I replace my mac-- in fact quite the opposite -- they went the extra mile and even replaced some worn off keys and did other good things for us. Yes I remember too when they were a dinky shop- and then opened up a second shop closer to our home. However, the owner made the difficult decision to close that second shop (years ago) and keep up the legendary service they have offered from the beginning. Many Asheville friends are as keen on them as we were and have older macs still running! read more

Soooo disappointed after working with this store for many years on my apple products. The last time I brought my MacBook in and said what the issue was-my screen wouldn't come up, instead they replaced the hard drive which was absolutely fine with a whoops.. When I brought it back because the screen still wouldn't come on, they charged me full price for the hard drive I didn't need and the screen replacement. No one took responsibility either. Owner doesn't make herself accessible. I paid in full for the hard drive but had to make payments on the screen replacement, which I did regularly and I was mocked for it by the employee that 'has to send out balance notices'. It seems I put him out a great deal... not a great way to treat a long time and loyal customer in any of these regards. It's OK, I won't be back. read more
