Great ice cream we had in Saugatuck, and lovely vibes befitting of a vacation town local spot. We went here a few times, and it was delicious each time. My kinds got whatever the brightest available flavor was, and I got a graham cracker ice cream with little bits of chocolate honeycomb in it. It was a milder flavor as expected, but so good I almost got it twice. The second time in I got a "Blueberry Waffle Cone" flavor that was vanilla ice cream, blueberry swirl, and small chocolate covered ice cream cone pieces. Phenomenal. Hard to pick between the two, and both better than what we had across the street. It gets busy in here, and there can be a little pressure of the line pushing as we sample, but hold your ground and try a few because they have a lot of fun flavors to explore. Lovely place. PS they charge a smaller fee for CCs but you can pay debit or cash to dodge it. Looking forward to returning again sometime down the road. read more

My friends and I were in need of an ice cream fix and we stumbled upon Charlie's! They had so many flavors it was hard to choose! I got the mint chocolate chip ice cream. While it wasn't the best mint chip I've had, I did enjoy it! They only had a few dairy free options which was surprising due to fast amount of flavors they had. One of my friends got the dole whip which they liked! The staff were friendly and fast when serving us. There was however very limited seating inside which was a little disappointing. This company charges a 4% credit card fee that is added on with no warning. Further, the maximum credit card surcharge allowance by law is a maximum of 3%. They pay at most probably 1.5% to 2%, so this is a bait and switch they do. And they also prompt on their point of sale for a minimum of 15%. This place is amazing!!! It's so good I came here TWICE in my very short trip here in Saugatuck. The honey lavender ice cream is HEAVENLY. Not too sweet either. It's dangerous because I can keep eating it nonstop. I can't find anywhere else that has this creamy honey lavender flavored ice cream. Seriously. Their one scoop is massive so they give generously. They make their waffle cones from scratch so it's served warm and fresh. I can't imagine what their other flavors taste like. I would make a trip out here again just for their ice cream. This place is very adorable and they have a wide selection of ice creams. They are dog friendly, so we were allowed to bring our dogs in, which they loved because it meant they got to sniff for any ice cream droplets on the ground while we decided. I ultimately went with a scoop of Malted Milk Balls, which was a chocolate malt ice cream with Whopper bits in it, a pup cup for my dog (which was one giant scoop of vanilla!), and a pint of Blue Moon ice cream - my personal favorite. We didn't get a chance to try the Blue Moon because spoiler alert I got food poisoning later this evening, and then we forgot to take it out of the freezer to bring it back home with us after we left our AirBNB the next day. The Malted Milk Balls was decent, but I'm a malt aficionado and it didn't taste all that malt-y to me and didn't seem to actually have bits of Whopper in there - it seemed like there were just shaved bits of chocolate in there for texture, but I never tasted the malted insides of Whopper through my entire scoop. Still delicious because ice cream is ice cream, just wasn't what I was hoping for it to be being advertised as malt! We went in early November and I think Charlie's was planning to close up shop for the season very soon, so everything was half off, which was a wonderful bonus! Full Disclosure: I got a semi-intense form of food poisoning this night and I wasn't sure if it was from Charlie's (because I don't think I'm lactose intolerant) or The Southerner, which we had for dinner. I don't normally get food poisoning, so this was very surprising to me. We went to Charlie's first (had dessert first), and then picked up food from The Southerner to take home, and it wasn't until about an hour after we finished eating dinner that the food poisoning hit. read more

Ordering, paying, and getting an extra spoon all took twice as long as I thought they needed to. The ice cream is reasonable --- we tried the Super Cow (aka Superman) flavor, which is never one of my favorites; this one seemed more "blue" than "blueberry", more "yellow" than "banana". 1950s nostalgia, rather than artisanal goodness. New ownership is horrible! Have been enjoying this ice cream for years but after two horrible experiences, will never return. THEY DROPPED ICE CREAM ON FLOOR AND PRETENDED TO REPLACE. Lady running the show is extremely rude and surprisingly the kids are as well. The first time, yelled at for asking to use the bathroom (which used to be public) and when asked for child size they said no, when asked for smaller than the last scoop they refused and were extremely rude (still offered to pay the same just didn't want huge scoops for toddlers). 2nd experience, ordered 3 chocolate chip ice creams (single scoop- 2 cup, 1 cone); after they scooped 2 of 3 I said "this isn't chocolate chip"; kid said "then what is it?", I said "it's cookie dough" they said, "oh ya we don't have chocolate chip" and kept scooping. Went to pay, the cashier swings the iPad for me to sign which knocked the cup of ice cream that he placed on the counter onto the ground. He said "you dropped it", when I disagreed he went back and pretend to scoop a new one but just scrapped some of the top off. They gave us a new one after confronted about it but never apologized and continued to act very rude. Do not waste your money here. read more
