We went to Captain sundae after a very disappoint visit to Dairy Queen (no purchase because the customer service was horrible) and asked for a S'more flurry. It wasn't on the menu but that young man never missed a beat and said "sure we can make one up!" It was delicious but more importantly he was there to serve. I didn't get his name but WOW! We were on our way into town after a long drive and happened upon this location. Captain Sundae is a place that we make a point of visiting once a day every time we visit, but we'd never known about this location. Is it new?? Well, we made the stop! Same great menu they offer at the other locations as far as I can tell. I always get the PB Shipwreck while my husband gets Tommy Turtle. But this time I switched it up just a little! I'd never tried their hard scooped ice cream, but I noticed they had a Puppy Chow flavor. So I just had to ask for a sample! And I loved it, go figure. So I got the PB Shipwreck but with this ice cream instead of soft serve. Talk about amazing flavors!! All the peanut butter and chocolate you could want with a little added crunch from the Chex cereal. I will say that this ice cream is quite firm and takes a while to melt. The captain Butterfinger was divine I devoured the whole thing very quickly. Actually I did not that was my brother but he thoroughly enjoyed it. I got a small raspberry cheesecake flurry which was very large I recommend getting the extra small unless you like a lot of ice cream. I thought that the flavor was nice but it could've been better - would not get again. The other two members in my party got tommy turtles and they loved them. Hate to leave a 3 star review here but I can't stand that they don't show what is in their sundaes via the drive through menu or website. Their website list the names but not the description of what it is. It's ridiculous that a place this busy and popular is so far behind in technology of the website to which I have to search the internet for other people's images of the menu that they posted. Classic ice cream place with soft & hard ice cream. Numerous choices, almost making it overwhelming, but I'd rather have too many than too little of options. My only issue is their website - with the extensive list of sundaes, they only have their names listed, not what's actually included in the sundae. For instance, "skull duggery," I couldn't tell you what's all in it if I've never had it before. On busy , peak times, I think the addition of descriptions to your online menu would make in-person & drive through lines go much quicker - just my recommendation! read more

Wow! This was my first time going to Captain Sundae. I had the largest double scoop waffle cone I've ever gotten for $4.65 after tax. She was originally trying to get a buttercream frosting with Bavarian cream filling from the local box stores, but apparently that was too much to ask on a Tuesday. This was actually to our best of luck, she called and talked to Nancy, who helped her pick the perfect ice cream cake for the occasion! Memories...sweet (literally) memories. I stopped by Captain Sundaes on our way through town. I used to live in the Holland area and therefore frequented each location probably more than I should have. But doesn't everyone? Anyway, I begged and pleaded, but didn't have to for long, to make an unscheduled stop. Soon, our furry child, my husband, and I were thoughtfully making our choices. Ok, at least the humans were. I was ordering for the furry child. My husband kept it simple with a chocolate vanilla shake. So did the furry child, kid's scoop of vanilla with whipped cream. I shook it up with the classic Tommy turtle! Ahhh so good. Just like I remembered with the salty pecans and carmel. Not to mention the creamy ice cream swirling about I had a happy tummy and a happy family. The teenagers working were considerate and kind. The prices are awesome. The parking is awesome, at this location, the service is awesome. AWESOME! I miss you so! read more

It's been quite a while since I've been here but it's your typical ice cream shop. Well, due to the pretty large selection of items they offer I guess they're actually a cut above the average ice cream shop. The products are good and the service is too. I don't know if they still do it, but they used to have tip cups out at the counter and the drive through windows which I feel is pushy and in bad taste so that's why I don't give this place the 5th star. I do tip in restaurants and actually do it at a higher rate than most people, but when workers start practically begging for a tip that's where I say the line has been crossed and then the odds are I won't tip even if I was thinking about it. Update 7-6-15: I stopped in for some ice cream and unfortunately they still do have their little tip jars out declaring that the gladly accept tips. If you look at my reviews I only do 5 stars. No negative reviews. Today I feel like the owners should know what happened. I have been going to north side location as a young boy from the first week they opened. I relish and cherish Captain Sundae. I've never had anything less than bright smiles, prompt service (no choice when your this good) and delicious treats every single time. So this 1 star is to the south side location only. I called in and ordered a custom $45 ice cream cake for a double birthday (niece and my mother). When talking to the very nice young man on the phone he was deliberate, careful and took my order with decorator free range on the icing decor. He told me the cake would be ready by noon and I was calling around 4-5 yesterday. I told him I'm flexible and no stress on your team is necessary so how about 3:00? He said oh, the cake will definitely be ready by 3:00. I reiterated so I'm running some errands tomorrow, can I just show up at 3:00 or should I call? No need to call it will be ready. So I show up (after a 30 minute drive from home) and there is a couple with two kids and another couple in front of me. No sense of urgency was shown by the staff, they did appear to be understaffed (1 for the walk in customers and one for drive through, for what could be a lot of reasons. I owned restaurants for 17 years and am very forgiving when this is the situation is in front of me as a customer. So...10 real minutes later I was greeted. I mentioned I was picking up an ice cream cake and my name. She returned with no cake and the explanation that the cake decorator had left a while ago and the cake has been made but not decorated and the manager would be over to talk to me. 6 real minutes later the very nice young man showed up. He said it's not ready and could I come back tomorrow (the day after the birthdays). Anyway, I will return to my delicious treats at the Northside location. This was a huge disappointment as they leave town in the early morning. Mistakes happen but birthdays, weddings etc... should be checked and double checked. I left saddened because of my love for Captain Sundae. I've never even contemplated they could disappoint. Oh, well. They are too nice and too good to boycott. read more

The ice cream, whip cream, and toppings are nothing special....they aren't noticeably different from any other soft serve place. I do give them credit for developing a menu of a couple dozen sundaes. I got the captains sundae, which is chocolate cake on the bottom, covered with vanilla soft serve, hot fudge, whip cream, nuts, and a cherry. The cake on the bottom was somewhat dry and cut in a rectangular piece that was tilted in the bottom of the cup, creating a gap of air underneath the cake. This cute little place is probably my favorite ice cream shop in the southern area of Holland. It's got that cozy clean beachy shop vibe about it. There is a big decorative wooden boat outside that you can also sit and hang out on. When I was living in this town, we got ice cream in like December because they were open. It was awesome. They have a drive-thru as well which is nice, and a lot of benches for enjoying your ice cream outside. Usually I get the usual: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough with extra cookie dough.
