Charlie's is definitely, IMHO, the best pizza place in the Washington Heights area. Having been raised in Bensonhurst and spoiled by Louie's (http://www.yelp.com/biz/louies-pizza-elmhurst-2) I am not exaggerating when I say that the pizza choices in the Heights depressed me. I've tried them all and I swear... it was like the Little Red Riding Hood. The first, on 181st by Pinehurst.. was too hard with the pizza being totally lopsided. The second, on 181st by Bennett... was too soft with it being more like a flattened dinner roll with tomato sauce and cheese than an actual pizza. Finally, Charlies - with its crisp yet not too thin crust and its balanced tomato sauce (all for $1 a slice) was just right. Ride on, Riding Hood.

I don't get the hype. I just ordered a pie to go based on the reviews and I had to give it to someone and order from another place. (Not wasting my calories on bad pizza). There was hardly and sauce or cheese and the dough is super thick and barely baked through (even though I asked for extra crispy.) Charlie, charge people a couple more dollars and stop skimping on the cheese, sauce and heat.

Regular slice... Garlic knots & breadsticks

One of the best Pizza Slices in NYC . Affordable prices and great quality tasting pizza. The garlic knots are great 5 for 1. They have two different slices jumbo and original. They also have pepperoni rolls and beef patties. You could as well create your own pizza or pie at a convenient price. When you around uptown Manhattan area. Come and visit this historic place that has been in business. For more than twenty years. Great customer service and great food..

This is a very old pizza shop that I grew up with. They are always very clean and really delicious. Charlie is really the one serving up the pizza and it's true my good old fashioned ny pizza. Must try it

The arancini was a standout: perfectly crisp on the outside, creamy inside, and served with a rich, delicious sauce that tied it all together. We ended on the tiramisu, which was absolutely worth saving room. It was light, flavorful, and a perfect finish to the meal. What really elevated the experience, though, was the staff. Everyone was genuinely kind and helpful--especially notable for New York--and it made the whole evening feel relaxed and welcoming. A small heads-up: it's a bit tricky to find, so give yourself extra time. That said, the hidden, underground subway setting is part of the charm and makes the whole experience feel unique. I'd love to see more restaurants creatively use these kinds of spaces in the future.

It is located right in the hallway of a subway entrance, next to a bar and across from a coffee shop, and it somehow manages to feel like a cozy, sit-down restaurant right in the middle of NYC. Don't let the odd location fool you, the food here is outstanding. The Neapolitan and Sicilian-style pizzas are both exceptional, with rich, well-balanced flavors and perfectly executed crusts. Every bite tastes high quality. Also, don't skip the house-made lemonade! The experience is even better because of the incredibly friendly and attentive staff. They were all so kind to so many people. From offering to keep leftovers in the fridge until a customer was done at their broadway show, to offering a scone to a young child while he and his father waited for their pizza to be done, it was more than just flipping a table and onto the next tip, it was humanity at its best. Be sure to give See No Evil Pizza a try. You certainly will want to come back again for more.
