Independence center food court.

If mall cheesesteak sandwiches get you all revved up I've stumbled upon our place. I constructed quite the fuel tank for delicious food and with Charley's large portions of cheesesteak and jalapeño cheese fries I filled that tank quite swiftly. They advertised the best cheesesteak in the world.... Maybe not the best in the world but I stand behind the best mall cheesesteak and jalapeño fries I've ever had.

Cooking up the meat!! Yum

It was fine. Probably less expensive than some other Cheesesteak places…read more The good: not too far from our house, the lady behind the counter was friendly, it was reasonably priced. The servings were not huge, but they were enough. The cheese sauce for the fries ($2.99) was a bit spendy, but it was good. I didn't like: 1)They expected customers to pay extra for their mayo/horseradish sauce. While .35 isn't much, and the lady working at the register gave me a tablespoon or so for free as I didn't ask about it until I'd already paid, it should come with the sandwich upon request. 2) the cook was sitting out front smoking when we arrived. I'm really hoping he washed his hands before cooking & starting to slice the mushrooms and that I just didn't see him. 3) there was a table cluttered with papers and a package of cigarettes at the front of the shop. It doesn't give customers a great impression that everything is kept up. However, I did not have any concerns with our table being clean. It was.

Little on dry side to me since it was my first time could have used more cheese. Maybe a sauce to pour on top. Third not enough meat. My impression was if I ordered the CEO I would get more meat guess that's why it cost $4.99 for extra meat. Going to give my first experience a two.

Seems to be mostly workers from the industrial park, which we didn't know but we still loved our food. It was a happy accident! Fries were like five guys. Sandwich was small and bread was soft. Not small as a complaint, small so I didn't feel like such a pig afterwards. Prices are right and food came out fast.

The craving for a cheesesteak was strong as I scoured the listings on Yelp. According to reviews,…read moreThe Lunchbox was one of the best there was. So I jumped in my car and drove to West Bottoms, a less than desireable, industrial area. There, I found a little corner store. I go in and walk up to the counter and say, "I hear I can get the best cheesesteak in KC here." The gentleman shakes his head and takes my order. Cheesesteak, add lettuce and tomato. Ten minutes later, I'm walking out with the daily special that included my sandwich, fries and a nice strong Orange Crush from the fountain. I am starving, so I rip open the bag, determined to devour it right there on the side of the street. The first sign of disappointment was the size. Maybe 6" but no more. Maybe I'm used to the footlong portions of Atlanta, but this was leaving a lot to be desired. I forgive it because maybe this is the size for the special. (Shrug) I take my first bite and get a mouthful of well-seasoned meat. But where is the cheese? I try another bite, thinking that maybe the end just was missing it. Nope, still no evidence of cheese. It takes me until midway through the sandwich before I reach the gooey cheese that makes a cheesesteak great. As I was eating my sandwich, I grab a few fries. Eh. Hand cut, which is good, but they have a slightly rancid burnt flavor. Like the grease has seen one too many days. And the lack of salt just elevated the off-flavor. I quickly abandon them and get back to the sandwich. I look down, but there is hardly anything left. Three bites and I am at the end...minus cheese. I'm left with bread ends, a few pieces of meat and a ton of lettuce and tomato. Sigh. Overall, I give the sandwich a 6/10. The meat was flavorful, but the size and the lack of cheese left me wanting more. The fries...let's not even rate them in this review or we will definitely be doing less than 3 stars. The redeemer? That crisp, delicious Orange Crush. Thank you God for soda...or as Midwesterners say, pop. (lol) Would I go back? Maybe. I would see if there is a 12" version and I would ask for EXTRA cheese and emphasize that I would love it to be spread across the whole sandwich. And I would skip the fries. Trust me, skip the fries.
