I've purchased a new Rav4 in '18 and a new 4runner in '19. I get all my service and modifications done at Charles. The staff is courteous, and the mechanical work is on par. They fixed electrical work on my VW that stumped other local shops I went to after throwing away diagnostic fees. If my car broke down in another state, I'd tow it back here to get it fixed. It's hard enough finding mechanics you can trust, let alone mechanics that know what they're doing. I plan to buy a new truck from them for my new LLC. I just called to get an oil change, they're booked three days out. They have 30 cars for oil changes per day (i asked), which speaks volumes, knowing all the competition right down the road. I bought a 2024 Chevy Trailblazer from Richard Radlo just four months ago back in April, 2025. He assured me that the car was in perfect condition and even said he personally knew the previous owner, so he could vouch for how well the car was maintained. He claimed it had been inspected bumper-to-bumper by his technicians and was completely road-ready. Well, that turned out to be a lie. Just a few months later, I had the car looked at by another dealership--and they found that two of the tires were dangerously worn, with the tread measuring under 3! They even provided video proof with the actual measuring tool showing the low tread. When I called Richard to address it, he brushed me off and said there was nothing he could do unless he "saw the tires." He also accused the other dealerships of lying, even though I had clear evidence. When I pointed that out, he had nothing to say and refused to reimburse or help in any way. Richard talks a good game, but he sold me an unsafe vehicle and took no accountability when called out. Please don't fall for his charm--he will lie to make a sale and leave you hanging afterward. They either do not understand the services they are selling, or blatantly bait and switch customers. I get my oil changes here for a decent price. The parts manager is very pleasant and helpful. The service manager on the other-hand is another story. Unpleasant and short with customer questions. I had an automatic starter installed, the service department said it was from that. I had the starter uninstalled, and they said the warranty is only good if they install it. Went through several batteries, and several deployments. Now that the truck is out of warranty, they finally found the frayed wire from the starter that they installed at my experience of over 400 bucks plus shop supplies (maybe the tape that they wrapped around the frayed wires)?? Maybe the starter will work???? Maybe they finally found out what is drawing the battery, I hope so. Truck has less than 12000 miles on it s on it because I am afraid of being stuck somewhere with a dead battery. Time to trade it in while it is able to start. DO not have a automatic starter installed on any type of Toyota. read more

They invite the customer to inquire about special internet price. The internet sales person even emailed a video in response to the inquiry. The video presents himself as a friendly and personable guy to work with. Upon contact, he indicated that the special price was $500 off of MSRP. Duh. When I inquired about possibility of free installation of accessories purchased at MSRP, he said, "no freebies." And when I inquired about the Dealer Conveyance Fee they charged, and whether it was negotiable, he said everybody pays that, it's not negotiable. Thought by CT law it was negotiable. He was neither as friendly nor as personable as he presented in the video. A total waste of time. Why bother to have an internet salesperson or referral person, who gives a $500 off of MSRP quote. Just have prospective customers go directly to a sales person and cut out this useless layer. read more

Trying to get a junk report for a totaled 2005 Lexus GX470 is worse then pulling teeth. The body shop personnel, Joe, keeps dragging his feet. In Connecticut, you're taxed on your vehicle as property tax. I signed over the title to the body shop at Charles Toyota as the cost of repair exceeded the value, but Joe kept telling me he'll get me the letter. Well, tax deadline is looming, and still no letter, and I'm still being billed the tax on a car I signed over to Joe/Charles Toyota. City Hall in Norwich needs the letter to stop billing me on the tax for the vehicle I no longer own. I stopped by about 3-4 times and made numerous calls asking for the letter, and it's been one excuse after another. What a horrible experience! read more

We had a pretty awful experience. Went in to trade my lease for a new car... after a test drive they tried to get me in the car that afternoon, which I wasn't opposed to but they we just barely out of our budget so we tried to negotiate. The salesperson was great and did a great job informing us on what we were getting and the breakdown of prices HOWEVER the manager cane over and was not only pushy but VERY rude. We told him that $18 a month more than what we were currently paying makes a difference for us. Instead of trying to work with us he degraded us and made us feel completely disrespected. On top of that, my fiancé would ask a question and the manager would walk away as he was trying to ask, completely ignoring him. Or he would get his question in and the manager would blatantly change the topic. I ended up going to a different dealership that was able to give us the price that we wanted. I hope the loss of a sale teaches that manager that there are certain ways to talk to a customer and certain ways NOT to. read more

Kindof a ripoff and the guy Keith is very nice but little pushy to get you to buy the car you're looking at. Ray was really nice too. I just feel like paying $4,500 down for a $10k car is not necessary but they made me feel as though it was my only choice. Also gave me a hard time getting my money refunded when I changed my mind about the car I wanted. We purchased a certified used Toyota Avalon Hybrid in April 2020 and would not advise anyone to purchase from this dealership. The trim level and the mileage were wrong on the paperwork, and they submitted an outdated form to the RMV, causing a delay of 2 months to get the vehicle registered. There were additional issues as well, but since we are now working with a lawyer I will not go into detail. Overall a terrible experience with this dishonest, incompetent dealership. read more

My husband brought his Tacoma in for a leak in the exhaust. The vehicle has 15,000 miles on it. In the process of trying to get it apart the mechanic nicked the flange. The mechanic snapped the bolt on the flange putting it back together. (Accidents happen)Too much torque maybe. Now damage has been done. They called my husband in to look at it and said you hit something it is road damage. Why did they not call him in prior to and show him. BECAUSE there was NO damage prior to. They never told my husband about the bolt let him drive home and did say he would need a new exhaust. Because my husband is elderly I believe they are taking advantage. When he got home he told our son who is also a mechanic. Our son gets underneath the truck and finds the bolt snapped off. We took pictures. No rust underneath. They won't fix it. Said it is road damage. Beware they are independent so Toyota will do nothing. ‍‍‍Would never recommend them to anyone. read more

I do lot of research into something before I spend $20k. I guess this place is just use to catering to well off folk who can spend $20k like nothing. I could tell they weren't used to someone asking lots of technical questions about their products before deciding to make a purchase. I don't expect the salesmen to be a mechanic. Mind you I'm not one either, but I have done basic maintenance on a car. I expect the salesmen to tell me when they don't know the answer to my questions. It's embarrassing to admit when you don't know the answer to a question about a product your selling. I get it. So then say you don't know, and go find out the answer. If you can't find the answer right away then get back to me. The salesmen I was working with did just that and was great. No issues with the salesmen. The bad thing is I guess the manager was embarrassed that the salesmen didn't know and decided to come over and attempt to answer my questions, because he didn't want to seem like they didn't know information on a product that they are selling. This was bad, because he didn't know the answers either, & just made up stuff. 1st & foremost, the owner tried to tell me that the Yaris was well designed & engineered by Toyota Engineers. This couldn't be further from the truth! The Yaris is a rebadge of the Mazda2, produced & developed by Mazda for Toyota! So no! Toyota didn't design & engineer the Yaris! This was just out right embarrassing to hear that Toyota engineers well designed the car when they didn't, Mazda did! 2nd, the owner tried to tell me that the Yaris was extremely reliable, & that when he does seem them come in to his store for service, they have 300k+ miles on them all the time. Not true! I was embarrassed yet again by extremely false information. Do a used car search for a Yaris & sort by highest mileage, how many do you see with over 300k miles? I couldn't find any. I'm sure they exist, but they don't "come in all the time" to his store! I mean even Yaris with 200k+ miles on them are extremely difficult to find, they are out there though. 3rd, the owner tried to tell me that the Yaris doesn't have issues with carbon buildup on the intake valves. Wrong! This is a direct injected engine inside of that car! Meaning that there is absolutely nothing cleaning the intake valves like a port injected engine! Just like all direct injected engines, carbon buildup on the intake valves is a serious threat, you periodically have to clean it, it threatens the efficiency of the motor and the compression ratio. This can be very costly, when you have to remove the whole engine, & use a walnut blaster on it to clean the carbon build up. Costs $3k+ on a car that is probably worth less at that point. 4th, the manager tried to tell me that the Yaris with the L trim didn't exist. Wrong! They are out there, & there are a couple in CT. I left the store so embarrassed by all the false information I heard. I mean this is just basic stuff, like who designed the car, Yaris in the wild with 300k+ miles on them in the wild being a common thing, L trim not existing, carbon build up on the valves not being a concern. I don't even know how to describe how embarrassed I felt. The owner had good intentions, he was trying to sell me a car & promote the product by negating my concerns, but the stuff he said was just not true! Don't attempt to just sell me a car, if it's a good car, it will sell itself, provide me with correct and accurate information, so I can make a well informed decision! Don't just try & make a quick buck off of me! You look really bad when you provide false information on a product your selling (especially on basic stuff to!) then admitting you don't know something about a product your selling! I felt so embarrassed not only for myself, but for them as well. I was embarrassed that they tried to take advantage of me by providing false information. My hunch is that they knew that they were providing false information on purpose, to get me to buy a car. I mean how do you not know who designed a product your selling, basic stuff here! read more

This Dealership has really revamped itself since they've had new management. They really helped me leave with a new car. We worked on my lease and purchasing options for a good few hours. Ray was my sales agent and was keen on steering me towards a car that suited my budget. I was surprised to see that the GM even got his hands dirty when trying to create a financing agreement on my new purchase. Overall, this shop is very professional and the people that work there are realists. They will tell you how it is with payment amounts pertaining to different series of models. I plan to go there again for my future new car. read more

Very disappointing-Do not recommend. We went to Charles Toyota looking for an honest deal. We had a trade-in and additional cash for a down payment on a new Tacoma. After a week and half, three visits to the dealership and multiple phone calls, they called us with an offer we could live with. It was the best offer to date. We stopped what we were doing, my husband left work, and we made another trip. It took about 2 hours after the phone call to get there. When we arrived, they said the deal was off the table. They had sold a Tacoma in the last 20 minutes and they didn't need another one to meet the quota. They have lots of sales ploys and tricks. Lots of wasted time and dishonest treatment. My husband and I both own successful businesses and neither of us would consider treating our valuable customers in this manner. read more

Worst service I have ever recieved. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and chalked it up to one bad service agent, but now I know it is an institutional problem. Multiple times now they have told me I've missed my appointment when I kniw I haven't, thank god for email confirmations. and multiple times they have not known why my car was coming in. When I've spoke to someone on the phone and another in person when my appointment was given away to some hot bimbo, there has been plenty of opportunity to jot down a quick note. The issue that has only recently come to light actually explains all this and more. I get that this is their link to identify themselves as big masculine manly men, but they need to realize that car junkies come in all shapes, sizes, ages, AND orientations. The level of anti-gay sentiment goes beyond that one service agents attitude. They block/ban/restrict LGBT material from being accessed over their customer wifi. I tried accessing EDGEnews via their app and was met with an error message. I then attempted to access their web version and was met with a BLOCK message ststaing that the page was denied as it was inappropriate. I still didn't think this coukd have anything to do with people backwards social agendas in this day and age. When I switched to 4G, everything worked fine. I attempted Googling OutQ, LOGO, and a pride event website and all sites were block for the same reason yet work when on 4G. I then Googled for heterosexual porn and found several in working order. This sort of this is a shameful, disgusting, and antiquated way of running a business. If any business owner or person who is anti-equality shouldn't have a business or live in a state that is open and accepting. I suggest uprooting and heading for West Virginia. read more

I purchased my minivan from Charles Toyota and do not usually have it serviced at the dealer. I brought in my van for the recall service and was having trouble with the sliding door (which I thought was related to the recall). I made my appointment weeks in advance. When I called to confirm, they could not find my appointment but said that they could see me anyway. Oddly, there was a message on my home voicemail confirming my appointment. I dropped off my car afterhours and noted on the envelop which number to call and to let me know if there was additional charge for fixing the door. They didn't call. I had to call them late in the day to find out when my van would be finished. It turns out they broke the back window when forcing the broken door open and needed to order a window to replace-- no big deal, these things happen. As long as they were fixing it, I didn't mind. I still had to call for several days to find out when my van would be finished. They seem to have very poor customer service and communication skills. When I picked my van up, there was no charge but my door was not fixed! They had no explanation as to why it was not repaired. They only did the recall service. I was very disappointed and asked them to find out why it wasn't done and call me. No one ever called to explain the problem. Now a week later, my kids noticed that the pull-up screen in the back window is missing! The screen was there when I dropped off my car. I just called to ask if the screen could have been removed or slipped into the door panel during the service. They confirmed that this "could have happened if they weren't paying attention." No mention of how to fix it was made. No apologies for the inconvenience of needing to bring my van in again. This dealer is not in a convenient location for me. I have no desire to bring my van over again for them to repair. No efforts have been made to win my business again. I am very disappointed in the service department. read more

I was in the market for a new 2017 Prius Prime. I had emailed many Toyota dealerships and Charles Toyota was the only dealership to give me as close to an out the door price as they could. Other dealers wouldn't tell me anything unless I went to the dealership. NOPE. So I decided to give Charles Toyota my business. I worked with Anthony and thought that the entire process was easy and stress free. I never felt any pressure and Anthony did a great job of getting everything figured out and taken care of. Took a test drive, sat down and figured out financing and how much I could get to trade in my current car. Keith the sales manager was very nice and worked hard to get me the lowest rate he could. And John in Finance (I believe lol) was great and made the paper signing part painless. I ended up leaving that night with my brand new car, license plates switched over and everything! This rating is for excellent customer service from the body shop. Joe T. managed my car's repair, with help from the body shop receptionist Taylor. Both of them seem like hard workers who were keeping all of the customers in their busy office happy, not just me. They answered all questions and walked me through the process, my first time using insurance and needing help w/ a loaner car in the meantime. The shop completed my repair successfully even though it turned out to be a hard one, I couldn't be happier with the end result. To top it off, when I got back into my car it was CLEAN as new! If I could give a no star review, then I would. I don't usually do reviews, but after a bad experience at Charles Toyota, I felt that I needed to warn others. If you are reading this review it is because you are considering the Charles Toyota dealership. Please don't. Last week I purchased a certified Toyota Corolla after owning a certified Toyota for 18 years with no major issues. I drove the car locally because the seller told me that there was an accident on the highway. I said "No problem." I ended up purchasing the vehicle because I trusted Toyota cars and it was certified. I took the car on the highway the next day and noticed a very strong vibration from the back. This was to the point that the rear mirror was shaking very hard making it difficult for me to see the cars behind. Then, when I applied the brakes to reduce speed, I noticed that there was a loud noise coming from the left front wheel. I immediately contacted the dealer and took the car in for a checkup. They found issues with the brake pads and the rims after I waited for 4 long hours. I couldn't understand how this car has passed the 160-points certification inspection.This to me is mind blowing. I'm not a mechanic and I was able to detect the issue just by driving it for the first time on the highway. The sales person told me that the vehicle was checked by a new mechanic and that he didn't do a complete check since the vehicle had low mileages (17K). How could this happen? The 2 problems with the brakes and the vibration were two separate issues that should have been found during the certification check. I talked to the manager, and all I got was that "It was a mistake". I told him that I didn't believe him, they simply did not check the car and misrepresented it. Charles Toyota's manager apologized and said that the only thing they could do was to fix the issues. To wrap up, I was frustrated and told them that I didn't want to do business with them anymore. Next day, I took the car to another Toyota dealer to re-inspect it and because I was still feeling vibration from the back. The new dealer found that they in fact replaced the brake pads but there was STILL an issue with the back tires which explains why I was still feeling vibration on the highway. This clearly shows their negligence even after the issue was detected. Charles Toyota failed once again to correct the issue. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, RUNAWAY FROM THIS UNETHICAL DEALER. Businesses like this one should not be operating. This is scary considering the potential safety impacts. Not to mention that Charles Toyota does not give a damn about people. I hope you find this information useful and that you can find a good, honest Toyota dealer that cares for people and their well being. Would never go back. Spent three hours talking with Ray and when I started asking about price, he said, "I don't do that. You talk to the finance guy when you go in the room." Finally got into the room and that guy thought we'd already made a deal. More waiting while they go find the sales manager. We agree on a price, shake on it, start filling out paperwork and he comes back into the room and says, "I'm sorry, I just can't do that price." We'd already agreed and started the paperwork! He apologized and said he'd be happy to sell me one model lower for the price we agreed to. I agreed to a nicer car at this price, why on Earth would I accept a lower model for the same price?? He asked if he could call me later to talk about another car and I told him he could (why not, never hurts to hear what they have to say), but he never called. I recently went to Charles Toyota to purchase a pre owned vehicle. I had found the vehicle online and I also sent in a request gor information by email. The internet rep hot back to me very quickly. Once I knew the vehicle was available I went straight in. I was walking around the preowned cars for about 10 minutes before Lou came out. Lou is an older gentleman who talked about having been in the car business his whole life and less about the car I was interested in. He was nice guy though not pushy at all. Wr took a test drive of a nice 2008 Camry. No the car was not perfect but wasnt a total piece either. I selected this car for monetary reason along with Camry reputation. After the test drive we went inside where Lou said he would get me pricing. Lou came back after what seemed like a long time with the internet price I had already seen. Started telling me that was the best price. Thats when thw big guy Harold came over. He told me he was the manager for over 35 yrs and I should buy cus it was a good place to do business. When I asked about a discount he flat out told me where you honna find a car like that. Well to be honest I didnt answer as sthe way he spoke to me threw me a bit. I had done some research and there were plenty of cars to choose from I chose to come to Charles as it was convenient to where I work. I gave Harold an offer anyway. He told me he couldnt sell the car for what I offered. Ok fine I didn't really expect him to just wanted to save some more money. I was told that he was going to change his price online and if I didnt take it tomorrow that price would not be available. Ok I underatand his technique I am not stupid. But the way he spoke to me and the to Lou who from what I could tell was a pretty valm easy guy was just rude. I was about to leave and another manager stopped me. His name was Tommy. Now Tommy was cool he explained their online strategy and how he prices things and how he could help me later in service. All things that were nice to hear. Had Harold not already come over and insulted me and try to bully me I may have purchased there. The sole reason I did not purchase was Harold. He is the reason people do not like the car buying experience. I have not ruled out going back when my wife needs a car in a few months just don't want to do business w Harold.
