Just visited Charles Seafood for first time. I ordered catfish on the bone expecting fairly nice sized pieces. I received six baby catfish. First time I had seen this. The fish was not seasoned at all. My wife ordered the grouper and shrimp. Shrimp was pretty good but group looked frozen and not seasoned. Slaw was very good. Disappointed in fish but good service. Been coming here for over 20 years and it's always delicious! I'm kind of partial to the fresh flounder and shrimp, both fried and seasoned to perfection. Oh my, both are great, but the large fried shrimp are better than I can describe here! Tender, sweet and it's like they just came off the boat and were prepared on the way to my table!! Everything is so delicious! I mean, gosh their coleslaw is amazing! Goes great with everything!! There are one or two seafood restaurants around here, but they simply can't come close in taste, quality or freshness. The ladies waiting tables and keeping things going are very nice and professional, keeping an eye out, making sure you're taken care of and go that extra mile with exceptional service. We have lived in Tifton for 2 years and always heard about how great this place is...we were so disappointed in our visit. Prices are reasonable for quantity, service is ok, the biggest issue is that they are in such a hurry to get you in and out that they don't cook food properly. Fish, scallops, fried pickles, gator tail, all had soggy batter and almost undercooked. Some food was rubbery because it wasn't cooked long enough. The food just could have been so much better if it had been cooked long enough to be crunchy like it should be. Plus it was very bland with no seasoning. Just so disappointing. It's like they are in such a hurry to turn over tables that they rush everything. We won't be returning. Also turn on the lights. read more

On a work trip to Tifton, GA, we wanted to "eat local" instead of at one of the many, many chains in the town. It was close to our hotel so off we went. It would have been better if it was Joe's Seafood Restaurant, but Charles is a good name as well. Our waitress was attentive. We had a ton of questions as the menu wasn't very detailed. They had many different fish options and we took her recommendations on what might be good. I ordered the Captains Platter which was mullet, scallops, shrimp, and oysters. I wasn't sure about the mullet, so I subbed the catfish fingers instead. You had the option of fried, grilled or blackened but they all had to be done the same way. Luckily, each item came up with a different breading/batter, which is always a plus. Everything was great, but my favorites were the catfish fingers and shrimp. For sides, I "upgraded" to the side salad for $1.50 and honestly, it was a few pieces of lettuce and some tomatoes in a small styrofoam bowl. If you're going to upcharge, make it worth it. I think it was $3.99 on it's own and had I paid that, this would be a 2 star review. The cheese grits were excellent. The prices were affordable and since you were eating off styrofoam plates with plastic utensils, I couldn't complain much. If I'm ever back in this town, I'd go here again. Georgia and Catfish go together like Boston and Lobster, Tatooine and Blue Milk, or Donner Pass and people. This resultant is apparently local favorite, the atmosphere is lovely and service is very welcoming. However, the majority of the items on the menu are breaded and deep fried and my soft shell crab were so heavily breaded that you could barely find a crab under the thick layer of breading, which made it almost impossible to eat without taking out the breading, On the positive note, boiled snow crab legs were excellent this is why I gave the restaurant 2 stars. I would not recommend unless you plan to order boiled seafood. read more

Busy place visited by locals or so it seems. Visited on June 20. This was to go order. My wife wanted the shrimp platter. Came with French fries and tatter sauce. She said it was good. My order was the adrenal platter. Here is where I gave it the rating. It is in essence a combination platter featuring mullet, scallop,oysters, shrimp. Also had fries and Cole slaw. The is not a quality fish and for the price should have been a piece of flounder or haddock or cod even. Anyway I digress. Next was the scallops, should have been nice big succulent scallops not bay scallops which were only eight of them( dime sized). The price was very steep for less than quality fish. That's why I gave the rating. We were on our way back from west palm beach where we had stellar fresh fish and a reasonable price. The service and friendly environment was nice the decor was way outdated. But if you want fish and are in the Tifton area your choices are limited at best. All in all not horrible. I really enjoyed my visit to Charles Seafood. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. The employee who took my Togo order provided great customer service. My order was ready fast. Their bathrooms are too small & really nasty. I won't eat there because of this. Also the plates are Styrofoam & forks are plastic so they don't have to clean them. Charlie's is cheap but the price is more than moderate. read more

I hate to give one star but there wasn't an option for no stars... before I begin my review I want to say our ( my wife and I) server was super, she was friendly and efficient. food was less than satisfactory, my wife got the Admiral platter and I got the whole Catfish dinner. we started off with 2 appetizers, the poppers and fried sweet potatoes. the sweet potatoes were ok maybe a little over cooked for my wife but I do enjoy them a little crispy. the popper, I swear I think they microwave them in a bag because I don't see any other way to have gotten that much water in the peppers, the cheese wasn't just melted but damp, muchy even the meal on the peppers was muchy wet. The fish tasted a day old and microwaved the green bean had no flavor ( I'd rather they opened a can of Glory or Margrets). the hush puppies ... or what ever they were suppose to be.. the hush puppies were made from flour... yep, not cornmeal, or some hush puppy mix but plain flour. the taterlog Fries were good. Everything tasted and appeared to have be reheated in the microwave. If your looking on a Friday or Saturday night for a good sit down catfish house try Daltons in Moultrie located near the theater. This was a disappointment as my friend was craving onion rings and there was way more batter than onion. The service was very good, but the food only mediocre, but we didn't order seafood. Would probably try it again as they had red snapper on the menu which is not often found as a daily offering. My family and I just finished eating our dinner here about 30 minutes ago, we are just staying here in Tifton overnight and was looking for a place to eat. We didn't want something chain related, so drove past this restaurant decided to turn around and try them out. When you first walk in, you can tell that this place is a small town restaurant that's been around for some time with all the old looking wallpaper and paneling, to the ceiling fans and just the whole ambience, just really had a homey feeling to it. I ordered the red snapper blackened, it was delicious, maybe not the best red snapper I've ever had but still very good. I got the green beans and baked potato for my sides and the hush puppies are tasty. This place had great southern hospitality, the girl that sat us and our waitress both were very polite and made sure we had everything we needed. Long story short, my family and I were glad we decided this restaurant for dinner tonight! If you're in the area and looking for a non chain restaurant I recommend trying this place out! read more

If you're looking for a very good local eatery, this is the place. The fish is cooked to perfection, and the portions are generous. Fried seafood is their specialty but we found the grilled salmon better than you get at the local chain restaurants. This is a no-frills place -- plastic plates and utensils, Styrofoam cups -- but that helps keep their prices in check. The food is good enough but the checkout is ridiculous. 15-20 minute wait standing in line just to pay and leave. Same thing if you call ahead. You still have to wait in line to pick up your food. By the time you can actually pay for a pickup order it's already gotten cold. read more

First time eating here and the food was good. However, when the waitress brought out our food a shrimp and both hushpuppies fell off my hubby's plate (they used stryfoam plates). The waitress went to the kitchen to get them replaced but came back and said that the kitchen staff wouldn't give her another shrimp. She replaced both hushpuppies and gave him an additional hushpuppy for the shrimp that fell on table. We kinda lost out on that deal. Proper thing to do would be to replace exactly what fell on table especially since it was the waitress fault. read more

I had the shrimp and it was so good that I have mentally replayed the meal since. I was pleasantly surprised at the casual atmosphere. It reminded me some of a "hole-in-the-wall" place my friends and I frequented while in college. The slaw was very good and defied my attempt to classify it as vinegary or creamy. The shrimp was very lightly breaded and so flavorful that I didn't use cocktail sauce. I am looking forward to dining here again. read more

This is one of my favorite places in town to get fish. Everything is always amazing and always tastes great. For me I'm not a huge fan of fried pickles however, here I make an exception. The service is always great and everyone is always so polite. Decidely simple. Without fuss. Under no circumstance is three-stars meant to be a bad thing, but rather in this neck of the woods, I suspect that this may be as good as it gets. This place is jam-packed around dinner time for a reason, and I think this restaurant owes it's popularity to it's history and connection to it's customers. Tifton, Georgia isn't on anyone's gastronomic guided tour, and fresh SEAfood comes from the ocean (aside from your freshwater fish obviously). The town is situation a couple hours from the coast near a major North/South interstate, which says just about every I need not hint about. Yes, the freshwater fish is fresh. If you stick to the freshwater fish, then you'll be ok, but the saltier-fishes are worth taking note about. The breading on everything I ate tastes the same... plain and simple, but cooked well throughout. A touch of black pepper or paprika would do wonders with this breading though (in my lousy, Californian-Yankee opinion). The catfish and bream were good, but the snapper was so-so. The fries were, well... fries, and the hushpuppies were simple and edible. The cole-slaw was very simple with no carrots and the usual slaw mix. What I'm getting at is that this place would never survive in a more-populated town, but that makes this restaurant an island unto itself in this part of the world. Seafood waaaaaay out here in the sticks must stand on it's own, which this place can. Just don't go anywhere near a large body of water, or else you'll forget about this place immediately. I'd gladly come back and try more stuff, but from the looks of how busy this place is, they don't need me. My hubby had the fried oysters and they were also good. He tried out grits for the first time and their variation were cheese grits....very tasty. Waitress gave us wrong information about the meal we ordered and when we asked to speak to the manager his attitude was that he could care less. Did not offer us any reconciliation and told us that he hoped to see us again. I replied that I would not be back and the waitress would not get any tip at all. The food was delicious . I had the fried oysters and shrimp combo for 10.99 and my husband had the catfish and shrimp combo. The portions were large and piping hot. The food was fresh and delicious. Found this lil place walking distance from my hotel and with recommendations from local folks. I wasn't disappointed. Tifton is land locked but Charles gives the coast a good run for the money. Great service and good food. A good diversion from the normal interstate fast food and chains. read more
