First timer! Order at counter, which I normally don't like to do! Lots of choices and that's the dilemma! Food tasted good, tho the first chicken tender I bit into was pretty dry! Stopped in tufton Georgia on our way to Tampa and wanted a local joint for lunch. Found this place with 4 stars and stopped for lunch. Cute place inside a stand alone restaurant near the Lowe's off the 75. We both ordered sandwiches. O have the hog and slaw and hubby have the pulled pork on Texas garlic toast and we had the sweet potato's side. O also got a sweet tea and what impressed me right away was the tea was dated today as in it was made today and said use only 1/13. Nice freshly brewed tea. Our sandwiches can in round tin pans. Nice size for your sandwich and side. The bread was Texas toast, big and thick. Their sauce comes in pouches. Interesting portion control and sanitary. But needed a couple more pouches beacuse the pork was so bland. No smoke, no flavor. The slaw was good but really lacked flavor of any kind. The sweet potato casserole was delish with a crunchy praline topping. All in all ok but missed on a few bites on the pork. Not sure how the ribs were. Would try again, maybe. read more

This fast casual bbq was a hit with my wife and I enjoyed it a lot too. This location, 1 of 6 across South Georgia, is located on the corner of US 82 and Carpenter Rd on an outparcel of a Lowe's/Wal Mart shopping center. When we arrived around 6 pm on a Friday, the drive through was slammed and there was a line at the counter where you order. Obviously, this place is very popular. We ordered the HNB Sampler ($11+) which allowed us to try their ribs, smoked chicken and pulled pork plus 2 sides. We added a banana pudding dessert as well ($1.89). We even got a "senior" deal on our drinks (it pays to be nice to the cashier). The ribs were tender but I didn't detect a whole lot of smokiness. That meant I got to use little dabs of their 4 different sauces, all of which I liked equally. My wife, on the other hand, really liked the ribs and said if we ate @ HNB again (highly likely) that she would just order the ribs. She said she liked the ribs better than the baby backs @ our favorite Sonny's and that says a lot. I can see why several reviewers have raved about the smoked chicken. My wife quickly devoured the wing, including the drumette, and she is a "flats" only person. Some parts of the skin were crispy like fried chicken and the seasoning was tasty. The flavor permeated the moist breast meat. I did get a little taste and would definitely order the smoked chicken again. The pulled pork was flavorful to me, especially the crusty outside. It was moist but not greasy. My wife didn't care for the flavor which meant I got to make me a nice sandwich with the 1 slice of Texas toast that came with the sampler. Our 2 sides were the potato salad, which was ok, and the mac'n cheese, which my wife enjoyed and which I thought had a little flour grittiness although it still tasted good The banana pudding had no bananas, no vanilla wafers and no meringue or whipped cream but did taste like banana. Not something I would order again. You order at the counter and they give you a number to display on your table so they can bring your food to you. You fill your own drink. Prices are really good because of this fast casual setup. I have already made note of where their other 5 restaurants are located for future travels in South Georgia and, if they ever open one in Tallahassee, we will be regular customers. If you think the best barbecue is always found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this isn't it. However, if you think it can be found a few minutes off the highway in Tifton, Georgia, then this really isn't it either. Depending on what you order, here's an outside chance it could be OK. Remember this is part of a chain. As someone who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read more than 125 Yelp reviews covering barbecue joints from New York City to San Diego ), I've come to learn that chains do not, as a rule, do barbecue very well... and, unfortunately, Hog n Bones, at least this one, is a prime example. The combo plate consisted of two ribs and a serving of colder than room temperature pulled pork. The ribs were St. Louis cut, meaty but not with a lot of flavor. A quarter of a chicken for $8.99 did have good flavor, but are you ready for this, their barbecue sauce that comes in plastic packets. It takes somewhere between three and five packets to get enough sauce to cover a slice of bread. Good grief, how are you supposed to know what flavor sauce you want when you order. How can you know if you haven' tried them? The sauces squeezed from the packet are sweet (which it was), original (which it was not) and hot (as labeled). Put your sauces in bottles and put them on the table so folks can taste them and decide which one they'll use in hopes of warming up the meat. Learning the fries were frozen, we opted for the potato salad which tasted just like almost every other potato salad. Not really good, not really bad. Just potato salad. The one side that was good was their onion peals; thin slices of onion deep fried with a good dipping sauce - but you can't make a meal out o a cup of fried onion petals. The service was great, the folks friendly. Matt at the cash register answered most all of the questions and was aware that some Yelp reviews had said the pulled pork was dry, and said he would make sure our order was not dry. We forgot to ask him to make sure it was warm. We asked about a tee-shirt to add to the collection, was met with a chuckle from a staffer who shall not be named and who said, "mister we don't even have enough for our own staff." There are, apparently, a number of Hog n Bones. You have to hope the others are better than the one in Tifton but the Brown Shoe Gourmet is not going to be the guy who opens his wallet to find out. There are plenty of locally owned and operated (and a few chains, example: City Barbecue) that do it right. One star. read more

The sign in front boasts that their Hog and Bone BBQ has won some local awards, but as we pulled in, I immediately took off a star because they had a drive-thru. It is my firm belief that any notable BBQ restaurant needs to have a three-fingered cook and have been in business for more than ten years in order for the grill is seasoned properly. Chains are typically a no-no when it comes down to it when selecting BBQ, so are ones with drive-thrus. The decor was typical of any sourthern BBQ joint, comlplete with an American flag and other assorted kitsch. We must have came at the tail end of a very busy lunch. All of the tables were dirty and every table was absent of paper towels. The Diet Pepsi was watered down and more than likely needed to be changed. The pulled pork sandwiches were small and the chicken tenders had no flavor, but those were complaints that came from my teenaged daughters. I ordered the half-order of smoked chicken and it was generously portioned. Hog and Bone has their own Signature Sauce that was overtly peppery, but they also have a Sweet Sauce and a Hot and Spicy. By far, my favorite was their Gold Sauce, which is more reminiscent of a Carolina BBQ sauce. Overall, the meal was decent and fairly priced. I did find it odd that Hog and Bone offers a breakfast menu. In all of my years, I cannot recall ever seeing or hearing of a breakfast BBQ. I would give 2 stars but I never do, trying to be nice. Place is clean. Food. Wrong order. Then asked for a large bbq and regular bbq plate. Forgot the bbq sauce. Asked politely what the difference was. Could not tell me. I believe the crew needs some trading on changing draw out to menu items and how to warm up the food. The Bbq was ok. Hog-N-Bones catered my husband's company picnic. They had at least 150 boxed lunches hot and ready for us. Everything was very well organized. Each meal had bbq pork, ribs, and chicken in it. It all was delicious. The ribs were super tender and had really great flavor. The portion sizes were large. They had the sides boxed up separately and individually. We had baked beans, potato salad,green beans and Mac and cheese. I tried the green beans and potato salad and loved them. My son, who considers himself a baked beans snob, said they were really good. It was very impressive that they were able to cater so many meals and have it be so good. We also had gallons and gallons of tea. I stuck with the unsweetened but did have a sip of the sweet tea. If you like true Southern syrupy sweet tea, this is the tea for you. My son though it was great. I would highly recommend them to cater your next function and hope I get the opportunity to one day visit the restaurant. read more

Fall off the bone. I had 3 of the sauces hot, original, and sweet. All 3 very good, the hot wasn't to hot at all, but I like the amount of heat delivered. Doesn't linger very long. The service model is different. If you order in you end up sitting down and they bring the order to you. The waitress was very friendly. But I didn't understand how she would serve mostly because you end up getting your own drink. So there isn't much to add in value. What I did enjoy was the music playing was Christian. That was a humble surprise and shouldn't sway anybody from eating here. Overall I would definitely recommend I wish I took pictures but my kids ate all of their food immediately upon serving. Breakfast & Barbeque is not really the tantalizing vision I want at dinner time, in my opinion it's a marketing nightmare, just the thought of eggs and pancakes in the same vicinity of smoked ribs and chicken is almost too much for my to stomach to handle. This place definitely has the feel of a fast food restaurant complete with a drive through and the friendly employees nestled patiently behind the counter while the customers scan the giant menu boards hung behind the registers. I don't know ordering bbq shouldn't feel like this, it's almost too much pressure, I don't want to see any value meals or a dollar menu, this is supposed to be southern bbq I don't to supersize anything. I was handed a plastic numbered placard and asked to grab a seat and my food would be brought out to me, I imagined a line of kids in the kitchen assembling my order as I dispensed my own drink in a styrofoam cup at the condiment counter - I know it's wrong to pre-judge since I hadn't tasted one morsel of what's being dished up here. I did find some comfort in the fact that they do take special requests so without hesitation I asked the my fries be extra crispy, speaking of fries I notice at least three different varieties of fries in the photos posted hmmmm. My food arrived warm in a basket after only a few minutes, crispy fries, creamy coleslaw, two rib bones, a quarter "smoked" chicken breast and Texas toast, yikes I've found the Texas bbq connection. Well over-all this place fit a lot of what I was looking for, pretty good bbq flavors, a clean restaurant with a friendly staff and my food served up in a reasonable time since I was traveling to Atlanta and didn't want this sit down bbq experience to take away too much of my drive time, so I guess it was a success in many ways. Ehh. All things considered - it's okay. This restaurant has a very fast food feel to it. I never saw a smoker or pit. I'm not sure if they cook the meat offsite or if they don't actually BBQ at all. I'm pretty sure my three-meat sample plate was pulled out of a fridge and quickly deep fried to warm it up. While they sell several different bottles of sauces, only a few are available to diners. You can't really sample different sauces as they give you plastic pouches of sauce vs. the more common squeeze bottles at real BBQ restaurants. In conclusion, the restaurant offers fast-food quality food and service. It isn't horrible but it isn't good. It is definitely overpriced for what you're getting. read more

The Hog is not bad. The atmosphere is fast-food country. Slightly upscale with wood everywhere. You'll be filling your own drinks and serving yourself, but they bring the food to you after you order at the register. They need better options for low-carb sides. Green beans is about the only vegetable you will find in this place. The bread is butter and toasty. The ribs were decent. The smoked chicken was very well done. The skin was just crispy enough and the meat was moist. The real downside to their food was the pulled pork. It was just dry. Their sauces are also good and were needed all over their pulled pork. They have a golden mustard sauce, and original (it has several spices that you can see in the sauce), a sweet, and a spicy. I tried all four and they each have a unique flavor to contribute. You'll pay about $10 on average a plate depending on what you want. A little less for the standard fare and a bit more for the rib plate. You can get a sampler for about $11.50. Let's start off with dry pulled pork on an over buttered square bread. Moving to cold fries that we had to return through the window before driving away. Dessert was suppose to be banana pudding however it lacked both the bananas and the vanilla wafers. This place is a hot mess. Lipstick on a pig. Looks good on the outside, Mediocre on the inside. Walked into a full trash can without a lid inside, no trash can outside. The women's bathroom that was having a maintenance issue (I give a pass on that), wasn't very clean, and there was a table full of open BBQ sauce containers to fill the squeeze bottles and no one actually filling them. The pulled pork sandwich my husband had was very good in his opinion and he is a great judge of pulled pork. I use to love going there to get ribs Went again last nite and the whole menu has changed. No ribs at all and a pulled pork sandwich was as close as you could get to barbeque. Stopped in to check out the BBQ. I like trying bbq from different areas of the country. This BBQ was in my opinion dry. The sauces were not great just ok at best. The sweet sauce tasted just like the KC Masterpiece sauce. The serving size of the large sandwich was nice not too small and not overwhelming.
