Hamburger steak Jr, fries, drink at the picnic table in the shade
Charlie F.

Wow - my last review for here was 2010! It's 2021, and I am pleased to report the Char-Grill experience is as good as ever! For those that have never been to Char-Grill (and if you live in Raleigh - get on over there) it is a simple and unique experience. You write your order on a paper form and send it down a metal chute to the kitchen, then go around to the window and wait for your order. Want to eat at the restaurant? There are a few picnic tables around. On this day, I was able to enjoy my meal at the picnic table under the shade of a tree. My meal is the Hamburger Steak Jr, with chili, mustard, pickles. It comes with fires (Raleigh's best). And today it was as good as it always is. Take a break from the national chains and enjoy this Raleigh original!

Old style burger place. Walk up to the counter, fill in a paper slip what you want and deposit it into a slot then wait for your name to be called. All food is cooked to order. Burgers are char grilled (thus the name of the place) and have a nice taste to them. $21 for two burgers, fries, drinks and a chocolate shake. The burgers were nicely cooked, juicy and full of taste. The shake was not worth ordering. It was not creamy but icy, was not something that they tasted like a shake. Medium sized drinks were plenty large. No reason to order a large drink.

Very retro

So far the best hamburger in RDU and consistent quality, taste and service!…read more Venue: casual, burger joint. Full bar available in front if you want to watch sports game. High top and bar seat in the bar. Tables and booth seating in the restaurant. Food: ordered good ol' cheese burger which you can make your own (you can pick type of protein for the patty, veggies, cheese, sauce etc). Patty is cooked just like we asked- juicey and well flavored. Deviled egg was phenomenal- little rich and on the salty side but it only compliments their amber ale to chug. Another complimenting dish to the ale is definitely fried pickle. Portion is good=big. Oh, came here another time. Burger was good again. I ordered Philly cheese, which I loved the taste but the ground beef instead of shaved beef was not for me. Service: both times, the service was great. Fast and very attentive. Price: I think the price is reasonable if not, really great. $4 pint amber ale? It's a steal!

It took a while for the waitress to come over and take our order. The restaurant was not busy (other than our table there was only one other) and it took 10 minutes to be asked what we wanted to drink. Then it took another 10 minutes for the water to show up and to have our orders taken. I ordered the Bad Ass Burger with fries. The fries arrived cold and floppy. I let the waitress know the fries were cold and she graciously took then and had them remade. The second set, arrived hot and floppy...and were unseasoned. The burger itself was terrible. The meat patties were not seasoned and overcooked (ordered medium arrived well done). Ultimately, the food was just disappointing. Lastly, I saw one of the cooks vaping over the food.

And the menu had a good variety of things that would make me want to come back and try. Also the vibes were good it seems like a good place to watch a game. To start off the meal we ordered some fried pickles as an appetizer and I loved them. They were just the right amount of crunchy and flavorful. The crinkle cut fries are a sleeper in the industry and if you do them right they are great and adding a dipping sauce is the way to go. Now onto the burger I got a smash burger with lettuce Moe joe sauce and cheese. It was a very solid burger! On my one bite score I gave it a 7.7 which is a very good score. The bun was hit or miss. For the other two burgers that had more toppings on them the bottom bun quickly got soggy. For mine it was fine the whole time. Overall I really enjoyed it and definitely would love to try different things on the menu next time.

Service could be better, but it's not bad. Decor and the bar were very cool and well designed parts of the restaurant. We ordered the Alabama Slammer and Classic Cheeseburger with truffle fries. We received regular fries at first, but were able to get what we originally ordered (truffle fries) after talking to the servers. If you order the truffle fries, make sure to grab a fork or extra napkins (or both)! Eating them gets real messy. Overall, a nice, casual burger spot in Raleigh with great fries.

Located in the newer section of North Hills, CowBar is a more sophisticated rendition of their Morgan Street Food Hall location. Very similar with maybe a few extras, you order up front, get a number, self-service soft drinks and condiments in the back and wait for you eats. Pick up your meal at the counter and it's time to eat! I did their popular truffle burger with fries Italiano and OMG! The burger was amazingly tender, rich and delicious. Tender grilled beef, smoky Gouda cheese, caramelized onions and truffle flavoring throughout. The skin-on fries with shaved parm, rosemary and garlic made for the perfect side. While the bar is not open yet, it looks like CowBar North Hills will have some beers and drinks to go with your burger. Overall I am super happy with what I experienced at CowBar. While the food is a touch pricey, it's totally worth the money and a better option to dine here, versus a crowded, noisy spot. Enjoy, Raleigh. You may have the best burger in the Triangle with CowBar!

The burgers were unbelievably juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly, the kind of food that instantly has you planning your next visit before you even finish eating. Everything tasted fresh, high quality, and made with real care. But what truly made this experience stand out was Joshua's incredible customer service. He brought such an amazing energy and professionalism that completely elevated the entire atmosphere. He was attentive, welcoming, patient, and made every us feel valued. In a busy food hall environment, Joshua still managed to make the experience feel personal and memorable, which is rare these days. Cow Bar Burger is the definition of a hidden gem, amazing food, outstanding service, and an atmosphere that keeps you coming back. If you're in the food hall and trying to decide where to eat, save yourself the trouble and go straight here. Absolutely 10/10!

I went with my mother on a packed Saturday evening and it gets crowded quick in terms of seating, but the service time was quick from order to getting our food I would say it was about a 5-8 mins. I got a Classic Cheese Burger with no onions or tomato. It is a 2 patty burger with a good sauce and savory seasoning with a piece of leaf lettuce. The burger was a solid 8/10! We got one Large Fry to split and I will say some fries were inconsistent some were soggy others were crispy. The flavor was there I would've liked a bit more pepper but good overall I do wish I got a side sauce. Overall the new spot doesn't hit quite the same as when it was in North Hills but still very good and if you like burgers you definitely need to give it a try!
