I just had the worst experience at Chapalas ever. Went for lunch with a friend. We were seated right away- it wasn't busy. Drink & food orders in. Our food came out ridiculously fast, was dropped off and then our server disappeared. I had a taco salad. Which ended up being meat snd cheese on shredded iceberg. No sour cream, salsa, or guacamole. I would have told the server, but like I said, she completely disappeared. Our drinks stood empty. The server finally showed back up in time to clear our plates after they had sat for a while. I asked for the check and then she disappeared again. We waited maybe 15-20 minutes. I literally had to wave her down in the kitchen to pay. Subpar food, subpar service. There are a lot of good Mexican restaurants in this town. From now on I take my business elsewhere. read more

First, let me start with the terrible happy hour margarita. Nothing more than bad margarita mix with a shot?? and ice. I told the waiter that it was undrinkable and he then brought us both a shot of Gran M (at no charge) which made it somewhat drinkable. Then the food was delivered. Chicken enchilada and pork tamale. There was so much sauce poured over the 2 items and beans that they were all unrecognizable. A mess. Flavors were ok but could have got the same eating it out of a bucket. The rice was the only recognizable item on the plate and it was dry, dry, dry. Also, the bench seats at the booths are too low and worn out. Table is at chest height. Uncomfortable. Went to college at the U of O and went here many times over the years, every time we catch a game or head down to campus from our long drives up north we have to stop here and 2 other places. I had many health issues and so couldn't order some of the usual things I love having here like the Arroz con Pollo or the jalapeno cheese dip (jalapeno queso) which is very addicting and you will slather it over everything. Instead I went with a vegetarian burrito.....I expected average and I got amazing! This is one of the better smothered burritos I have ever had let alone vegetarian. So much flavor in the veggies and the sauce/tortilla and the accompaniments made the visit that much better, also the service is always freakin phenomenal. So there *is* good Mexican food in Eugene. Quite good. I didn't try a burrito as they seem to make them differently in Oregon, and I prefer the California style, but all the basics--rice, beans, and salsa--were flavored well, and the staff was helpful when it came to dietary restrictions. I got rice, refried beans, flour tortillas, and pico de gallo, and my mom, who is allergic to everything, ordered the veggie fajitas. She was worried about the oil they would be fried in, and was exceedingly pleased to learn that they use olive oil--a rarity at Mexican restaurants. Everything was delicious, especially the rice, and the portions were adequate. (The plates the entrees come on are HUGE!) I even boxed a little to take home. This restaurant has average Mexican food with a nice outdoor seating area. We have tried a variety from this restaurant: vegetable soup, fiesta kale salad, chalupa, enchilada, tacos, queso, and fajitas. This is one of the few restaurants in town with queso dip which is why we keep giving it more chances. Overall, the food isn't memorable, but it had a prime location in oakway area where you can sit outside when the weather is nice (sometimes there are free music events there too!). Stopped here for dinner this week. The camarones a la diablo was not good as the sauce was made with the wrong peppers and had no heat at all! I requested a hotter salsa but it was flavorless albeit a bit spicy so I tossed it onto my camarones. My girl had the chili relleno and it was made without eggs... I got the tortilla soup and the first few bites seemed okay but really salty and then I realized why it seemed slightly off. It tasted like what you dip a French dip sandwich in, a super salty Au Jus beefy broth. Very strange considering it says it's a chicken broth base. My wife and I went here after wanting some Mexican food and trying something new we decided to go to Chapalas. We were quickly seated, drinks were filled, and presented with chips and salsa. Bravo! I always skim the menu for my go to... The one dish that I judge every place that offers it and that is Pollo Ala Crema. My wife got her go to in cheese enchiladas. The rice was good and the Pollo Ala Crema was also done well. My wife who is very particular about her food was also liking her enchiladas. The atmosphere and the staff are great, friendly, and attentive. Definitely recommend Chapala if you have not tried them! read more

How to have an enjoyable time at chapalas: 1. Don't actually order an entree unless you're STARVING. meals are huge. 2. Order their alcoholic drinks. I love their strawberry colada. It tastes like a strawberry milkshake and it gets me tipsy every time! 3. Order an appetizer or two. My coworkers and I call it crack cheese (it's the jalapeño cheese dip). It's addictive with unlimited chips. The quesadilla appetizer is also a great choice because it's like the entree (comes with beans, guac, etc) but smaller portion. 4. Don't expect chipotle. They were definitely more then we expected. The restaurant was nice and clean and the staff was friendly and quick. The food was great. We have been to there other location and will never go back, but we decided to try their Oakway location and so glad we did. Their food was not only great with huge portions, but had great flavor. We ordered take out from here while staying at a hotel nearby. Portions are HUGE here. You can share meals for sure. I had the chicken fajitas. They were pretty good along with the rice, beans, tortillas, and all the toppings. The queso we started with was amazing! I would order that again. My husband ordered the taquitos. They were more like chimichangas. Portion again was huge. Loved these and would order again. Overall, had a great experience! read more

I had read somewhere online that Chapalas had pretty good food and my friends and I decided to stop by. Our waitress was lovely, very nice and fast, but thats about as good as it got. We started out with their chips and salsa, and we ordered queso which was all pretty good. However the entrees were flavorless and a little cold. I got the pollo crema, and my friends got an enchilada and taquitos. Three pretty different things and all tasted very bland, sadly. I don't think we'll be returning, which is sad as Eugene seems to really be lacking in terms of Mexican food. read more

Chapalas is located in Oakway, which is a wonderful place to walk around. In the outside shopping center, there are lots of places to shop so I love to take my daughter there when we have time. Inside: whenever I go to Mexican places I like it when they have music and the music here definitely fits the interior. Food: I love the food here, especially the steak fajitas. It comes sizzling hot this is the best with an option of corn or flour tortillas. The outside seating is nice on a sunny day! I enjoy this restaurant. Lovely place, lots of room to dine. Price is right. Food is delicious. Wait staff could be a bit more tentative to their entrance locations so they can seat people in a timely fashion. I have had to walk and go find someone to seat us on several occasions. They could also do a better job making sure customers water glasses were full. Too many times I have to ask for more water. I love their Tortas. And their Chalupas are HUGE!! Fun place for birthdays, they sing to you if you're into that type of thing. I give one less star from a five star review because the wait staff need to work on their skills. The peach margarita, chips and salsa were great. The meal pretty much went downhill from there. My husband ordered the chimichanga, burrito and chiles rellenos. I had a chicken taco and chicken tamale. Maybe some wouldn't object to lots of chicken in the dishes, but for me there is such a thing as too much is, well, too much. The taco was so full of the shredded chicken, it caused the bottom of the crisp tortilla to fall off. I had to use a fork to eat bits of the taco. Then, my chicken tamale was also over stuffed, causing masa to turn to mush. Not very appealing. The refried beans were runny and yet laced with copious amounts of blobs of cheese that obviously was the cheapest brand of grocery store shredded cheddar available. The rice was pretty tasteless. Blarg. The service was very nice and seating in the very back made it a little less noisy. Unfortunately the booth it supported by two large metal posts, making it impossible for my 87 lb service dog to go under the table and he ended up laying right in front of the large glass window, in full view of an endless stream of shoppers and mall goers. The service here is really slow. There are a several servers walking around but they don't take your order or get you a check unless you say something. We finished our meal and waited for 15 minutes for someone to come by to give us a check and another 15 minutes for someone to come grab payment. The food here is ok. The tortilla soup is tart and has too much cheese (like globs of cheese). The chicken in the quesadilla is too juicy and makes the quesadilla soggy. I'm not impressed so far. Came here for lunch a few days ago and was pleasantly surprised by my meal and service. I was seated promptly and after a quick look at the menu I ordered the Flautas with a glass of Horchata. First off, the Horchata is ginormous. Not a bad thing. I'm just not used to getting such a big glass. Secondly, the food the great. Truly was. The Flautas were nice and crispy and full of flavor. Chapalas is one of the best Mexican restaurants we have ever had! It's like a Mexican/Italian fusion flavor, which is surprisingly delicious. The portions are HUGE and I had leftovers twice from just one meal! I eat like a bird though so that might just be me. Ha. The service is friendly, quick and attentive. The environment is warm, light and inviting with tall ceilings and lots of windows. The noise level isn't too bad either and the restaurant is very clean. The menu is full of many wonderful options and they allow substitutes for those who are vegan/vegetarian and/or gluten free.
