Chao Ban is a must-visit! We brought a party of 11 in for a family weekend, and it delivered from the kitchen to the front of house. Big groups can be hit or miss at a lot of restaurants. Not here. The team handled our table with ease after an adjustment and made all 11 of us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we sat down. A few dishes we'd order again in a heartbeat: - Beefy pho: rich, deep broth that hit exactly right. This place was pretty bad. Both the food and portion sizes were disappointing. The noodles in my pho were extremly overcooked to the point where I couldn't even pick them up with chopsticks. I ended up using a spoon to eat it. On top of that there were barely any noodles and the bowl cost $21 which made it even more disappointing. I also got fish caramel wings and it was not bad but not good. If you are craving pho, there are plenty of other pho restaurants nearby that I'd choose over this place. read more

Ambiance: if you have been to the 'food court' in Tysons Galleria, you're in for an upscale treat. It's probably one of the most beautifully decorated food court in the area. Service: we went towards the end of the evening so it wasn't busy. Service was good and fast! Food: My date loved his rice platter. Honestly delightful. We came for brunch a few minutes after opening and we're well taken care of for a larger party. We had the pho spice fries to munch while waiting for part of our party to arrive, which we're flavorful though quite salty (so either less salt or less msg but the spice blend was otherwise spot on). I had the catfished/catfish banh mi which I loved, and some of the beefy & beautiful pho, which was a nice modern take in that there the meat included lean brisket, meatballs, and a thick slice of fatty pork with a clean broth. Such a cute spot inside Galleria! The hostess and the waitress were extremely friendly. Now for the food and drinks 1. Viet Coffee - not too sweet but has an interesting aftertaste. Not sure what it is but it's okay. 2. Crispy Spring Rolls - $8 and only 2 pieces. It is very good, however, I wish they gave at least 3 which is standard in most places. 3. Beefy and Beautiful Pho - such a fun name! TBH, the portion size was way too small for $21. Standard ingredients and they completely ran out of bean sprouts (which is basic for pho and they didn't have any very disappointing). The broth itself was very good. Very spice heavy aromatics compared to local Viet restaurants. Some complaints to make: 1. We were introduced to ordering on QR code. When we scanned it, it was popping up our neighboring table's order and we were so confused. The waitress had to switch the QR code with the other table. 2. When we were checking out, somehow... ANOTHER table's order was added into ours. Waitress seemed to not believe us for a moment that we didn't order it and I had to count out all the dishes on the table. 3. Checking out on the QR was a little confusing. It basically shows everyone's past bills(?) and remainder bills. At the payment screen, maybe some people don't notice but I immediately saw an extra charge for using the QR code. The service was ok. I think they forgot about our order because we waited a long time after the people before us got their food. They also asked us what our name was for the order... I enjoyed the fried chicken although the fish sauce smell was really pungent. It tasted juicy! The catfish banh mi was fine. The carrots and cucumbers were definitely not pickled enough and the bread was just too wet from the ingredients. Unfortunately there was a small metal piece (probably from some kitchen item) in the noodle dish so we didn't even finish that. The white rabbit drink was delicious but it wasn't anything special. TLDR: Beautiful space, excellent flavors, and strong portions with a few service and quality control issues, but still worth returning for more. It is hard not to come in with certain expectations when dining at a Kevin Tien restaurant, and overall this visit still delivered in many ways. The brand new space is beautiful, and the ambiance is especially impressive for being inside a mall. The quality of the cooking and the flavors are undeniably good, and the portions are solid as well. There is also a house made sauce on the table that was absolutely delicious. You really cannot go wrong ordering the curry. The fusion of flavors paired with the crunchiness of the chicken was excellent and easily one of the highlights of the meal. Despite a few areas that could be improved, I would still come back to try other items on the menu. That said, there were a few disappointing details. My pho came with a piece of lime that was so dry it was impossible to get even a drop of juice out of it. When I asked for another piece, I was brought half a lime, but the skin was already starting to go bad. There were also only about 10 slices of jalapeños in the pho, and I do wish the online ordering system allowed for more customization. The bánh mì was also delicious, but it had so much sauce that the bread became soggy before we could finish it. Lastly, I unfortunately sat on some food that had been left on the chair when I arrived. My waitress was very friendly and answered questions about the menu with no issue. My favorite is definitely their coffees they have. I love the specialty ones especially the banana foam, sea salt, and the strawberry pandan matcha was also nice. It's decorated with plants and a fair amount of seating. As an OG fan of Moon Rabbit, I was also eager to see which dishes would be highlighted here. The atmosphere: Located on the top floor of Tysons Galleria, Chào Bạn is a sit-down restaurant rather than a fast-casual spot like other businesses in the food court. There is also a kiosk available if you prefer to order takeout. For dine-in, you order through a QR code, and the food is brought directly to your table. You can even close out your tab from your phone, which makes the whole experience feel very seamless. The food: We started with the Fish Caramel "Wings." They reminded me of classic cánh gà chiên nước mắm, though these leaned a bit sweeter. Wish there was more sauce! They were also reminiscent of the fried chicken I had during a visit to Moon Rabbit years ago. I ordered the "Let Your Shoulder Lean," a classic broken rice dish served with pork shoulder. I was looking forward to coming here as I was a fan of Moon rabbit. I didn't realize this was a sit down style restaurant, and I would've preferred to just order and eat. No complaints about either in terms of taste, but for what you are paying, I wish the portion sizes were a bit bigger. Chao Ban is easily the busiest spot on the top floor of Tysons, and for good reason. The location is a major plus--parking is easy, and the space itself is surprisingly spacious for a mall restaurant. The food is much higher quality than your typical mall fare, offering truly authentic Vietnamese flavors that nail the balance of sweet and tangy. While I'd heard concerns about price versus portion size, I actually found the portions to be perfectly fair. The grilled pork was flavorful and charred perfectly, especially if you don't mind a bit of fat. They currently aren't offering carry-out (likely due to kitchen capacity?), so plan to dine in. Stopped by for lunch after finding out this place just opened earlier this week. There was about 25 minutes wait which is a surprise for me. I guess a lot of people found out about it also. I do have high expectations for this place since I ate at Moon Rabbit before. I rarely go to Tyson Galleria. The last time I was here was eating at the former restaurant here. Pretty much everything looks the same w minor changes to the decorations. For the prices, it's on the more expensive sides but that is expected from the mall. If you love traditional Vietnamese food then this is not for you. You can go to Eden Center for that, I want to try the Fusion of Vietnamese food. Pho - the broth is on a little salty side. All the Banh Mi are decent. The meats are kinda dry and overcooked. The snacks, only the wings are good. The others missed the mark for me. Not sure why the puffed shrimp chips are salty. I truly want to like this place. But I found all the food we ordered nothing stands out to me. The service is great though. Our waitress is fast and that is pretty good for a new restaurant. I've been dying to try this place, having not been successful in getting into Moon Rabbit (yet!). Decided to have a late lunch with a local friend who lives in the area. We ordered: 3 appetizers - the crispy spring rolls, the honey pecan shrimp, and the fish caramel wings; 2 noodle dishes- the beefy & beautiful pho (per the waiter's suggestion after we gave our order) and the ducking around, and the bang mi sandwich, "catfished" . We had heard portions were small and we wanted to try a lot of things. By far the one dish I wanted the most was my favorite- the honey pecan shrimp. Also a favorite was the suggested beefy & beautiful pho. I would come back and order both those dishes again!!! Loved!! The atmosphere is definately mall food courtyard-ish. And the tables are close. I came here on a Sunday evening and as a party of four adults and two children we were able to be seated right away. We ordered a handful of items on the menu to try: - Jasmine Iced Tea - This drink has harney & sons jasmine tea and palm syrup. Skip the drink, not worth the $5. - Honey Pecan Shrimp - There are nine battered shrimp, candied pecans in sweet yuzu kosho aioli. This was my favorite from the entire menu. The shrimp are huge, so flavorful and still had a nice crispy texture despite being drenched in sauce. Definitely a must try! - Beefy & Beautiful Pho - Super pricy for a bowl of pho, but you get ALOT of meat. This comes with 12 hour brisket, eye of round, beef meatballs, cilantro, shaved onions, scallions and pho broth. The meat really soaks in the delicious flavor of the pho broth. - Chickin Park - This dish comes with sweet, spicy fried chicken, broken rice, fried egg, cucumber, lettuce and tomato. The chicken was really flavorful and well cooked. For the price tag though, for two pieces of chicken and some standard sides it was not worth it to me. Tried out ChaoBan, the new Vietnamese spot in the Galleria, and I went in with realistic expectations. If you know the Galleria, you already know everything is top dollar, and restaurants don't always last long because of those high price points. I stopped in for lunch and kept it light with a bánh mì. They had a few options. Catfish, shrimp, pork belly, and a veggie option and I went with the shrimp. It was $18, which is definitely on the higher side for a bánh mì, but again... Galleria pricing. I also grabbed a Vietnamese coffee because if you know, you know.It's basically like drinking 18 Red Bulls. Ordering was quick, and there's someone there guiding you through the touchscreen. Not really necessary in my opinion, but it was a nice touch. Food came out pretty fast. Now for the food. The bánh mì was honestly a bit underwhelming. I've had plenty of traditional Vietnamese bánh mì, and I definitely lean toward that over this more upscale version. The shrimp were just small tempura-style pieces...nothing really flavorful or memorable. It felt minimal for the amount of bread they give you. There were some pickled veggies (likely radish), and everything tasted fresh, but overall it lacked depth and balance. They also included shrimp chips, which was nice, but it didn't really elevate the meal. For the price, I expected more substance and flavor. The Vietnamese coffee, though? Strong. Very strong. Definitely delivered on that front. Overall, I'm on the fence about going back. The portions and flavor just didn't match what I'm used to from more traditional Vietnamese spots. I came here for dinner on a Tuesday night after seeing videos about this place on TikTok. I ordered the piggy stardust sandwich and the Saigon sunset coffee. The quality of the sandwich and lack of complexity did not justify the almost $20 price tag for a banh mi and it was almost criminal. The menu online says the pork is crispy but the menu in person doesn't mention that at all which is conflicting information. My sandwich was super soggy and salty from all the maggi and pate they put on it and the pork belly was tough and just a huge chunk of fat. The cold brew/limeade tasted like cold brew I left in my fridge for too long next to a bowl of limes. There was only one kiosk to order at with one employee standing there helping you which does not seem efficient at all. The fish sauce dipping sauce but it was spicily uncomfortable if you used too much of it. 2) The chicken curry bowl is underwhelming. So disappointed. I just had a late lunch today (Saturday). Ordered the Piggy Stardust banh mi sandwich and a Vietnamese coffee. The good: 1- The bread was fresh and crispy. 2- The sandwich was tasty. The bad: 1- Severely understaffed, which accounted for a 40 minute wait time. 2- The Piggy Stardust sandwich is supposed to have crispy pork belly. Well, you know what you get when the pork belly is NOT crispy... a big blob of fat. Had high expectation but was utterly disappointed. 1. Our party of 3 ordered 3 different dishes. They all came up fresh and hot and well favored. However both the fish banh mi and my chicken were deep-fried, very heavily breaded, and oily. Both the banh mi bread and rice were not on par with the Vietnamese staples available from other restaurants in the DMV area. 2. The male server brought our orders but did not even get the names of the dishes right. We questioned him and told him the dishes were not what we ordered. Then he took the dishes back and checked with the kitchen. Brought them back and said there WERE what we ordered. Evidently he was not well trained and absentminded. 3. Be aware: They do not take cash, and charge a $2 platform fee for using credit card without even alerting us. 4. Genuine disappointment from the renowned Moon Rabbit owner :(. Going to split this review up in a couple different sections as there's a lot to note. Review based on Tuesday 03/18 after they closed this past weekend to retrain their staff. SERVICE: Nobody seems to be on the same page- Arrived at opening hour as their first and only customers; we were greeted with uncertainty from a staff member, unsure if they should wait for the designated host to arrive at the stand to seat us or to seat us themself. Once seated, our orders were taken and everything arrived timely except for one rice dish. Everyone finished their appetizers and main meals after 30~40 minutes and the rice dish still did not arrive with no updates. Only when they started clearing our dishes did they mention "your rice platter is on the way"-- but our meal was finished by then :/. As we continued to wait for the rice plate, I asked for the check from the first available staff member I saw after being unattended and looking around for our server for awhile and was responded with "you should ask your server for that." By the time the check arrived, we had waited around 50 minutes total by then and the rice plate was still nowhere to be seen. Thankfully our server noticed and comp'd the rice plate for us. Mind you, we were the only people there for nearly the entirety of our meal. As a place marketed as "fast casual dining", this setup seems all over the place and very inefficient. Overall, staff members seem to be rigid and inflexible in their roles while also not seeming confident in their designated position either. Everyone seems unsure and confused. Seems to have been fried in the incorrect oil temperature- outside was fried to death and texture was tough, akin to cow leather and very chewy while the inner part's fat was not rendered whatsoever. No lemongrass flavor in sight, whole platter just tasted like fat and oil. Thank god it was comp'd because I would never pay for this. I really wanted to like this place, as it's convenient, but after three visits I will not be returning. Today's fish in the curry fish sandwich was not fresh, the fried coating slipping off the super thin filet before I even bit into it. The bread was cut in half only on the bottom side, so cucumber and fish slipped out and fell entirely apart in my hands before the first bite. Very underwhelming seasoning. Tasted like hot sauce, not curry. Flaccid pickled veggies. Tasteless bread. Last time my hot chicken was so hammered in the fryer, I could barely chew it. No napkins in the takeout bag. I've yet to try their food (because I wasn't able to) but the first impression already turned me off and they're turning away customers because it's not a fast casual restaurant like the rest of them in the same food court area. It's a sit down restaurant with limited number of tables, which is absolutely ridiculous considering it's a food court and there are tons of tables nearby. I asked for a table of one and was told the wait would be very long. They also don't allow to-go orders. They will go out of business if they don't turn this into a fast casual and let the customers freely order what they want from a tablet screen.
