Been here few years back - talked to someone over the phone last week for horseback riding and renting one of their one room/buildings by the pond for camping. Lady on the phone said to make reservations on air BNB for camping, but horseback riding between 8:00 a 5:00 didn't required reservation. We decided to go there and arrived at 3:55pm - waited few min by the office for some lady to say they only do rides between 8:00 - 4:00 and her staff's been there all day and that they are tired. I had reservations elsewhere this busy holiday weekend. Upon arrival I was turned away due to my coach size---even though I gave that info on the phone while making my reservation. I was bummed! I was determined to go camping still. A light bulb went off!! Chanslor Ranch came to mind. I looked for info on the web, with little luck. (I hear they are working on a web site, newer ownership) I decided to call, hoping to find a spot to camp. I got ahold of a very nice and helpful lady named Cathy, she told me to come on out they would make room for me. I asked if she was squeezing my in like a sardine and she promised me I would have plenty of room and a view. Yay! We arrived at Chanslor Ranch and was greeted by Donnie. What a terrific guy! He helped my husband get situated. Now that's service! I even ended up staying an extra night. Rest rooms were pretty clean and always had TP and PT. I can't speak for the horse rides or the little rooms they rent. From observation, it was all run very well. I look forward to camping here again soon. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, but this place really isn't worth the price. I stayed in the Tree Frog tent, which has parking and is nearest the bathrooms and office. It still felt private and quiet, though, with the exception of some late-night drivers on the road to the campsites. But here's the bad stuff... The bathrooms aren't very clean. Some mold on the bottom of the shower door and hair in the drain. There's only one hook and no shelves. You can't flush toilet paper so there's a covered plastic trash can for it. The lighting isn't great. No fans. There seem to be only two bathrooms. I was there at an off-time so I never had to wait for a bathroom, but that's not nearly enough bathrooms for the ranch at even moderately busy time. The whole bathroom experience is sort of gross. There's some firewood at the campsite but you'll probably need to gather more near the office. There isn't really any kindling, but another review mentioned that so I knew to bring my own. The fire pit was nice and deep, but the grill provided was too small to fit on top so you couldn't use it for cooking. There were no tongs or pokers. I tried the wood stove but couldn't make it work (probably my fault, but there was a packet of "firestarter as seen on Shark Tank" that was totally worthless, and a tiny packet of matches). The stove had some weird parts, like a faucet thing, but there were no instructions. I thought they advertised wifi, but it only works near the office. My tent was really close to the office but the wifi signal was too weak to use. My T-mobile cell phone worked but I was told most cell phone services don't. The electricity in the tent is battery-powered and not long-lasting. If you have something you really need plugged in, you should ask about it before you reserve. They give you a couple of battery lanterns which work fine, and you can charge your phone and laptop with the battery, but otherwise you can only plug in an electric kettle or something you only need for a couple of hours. Which leads me to: They advertise coffee and tea. There was a single tea packet and no coffee, but I didn't care because I brought my own tea. The thing is, there's no electric kettle. So you have to wake up, start a fire, boil some water, and then make your own coffee or tea. They don't seem to understand that the most important part of that equation is the hot water. If you're camping, you can bring your own coffee or tea! All you need is a kettle you can plug in! Another ridiculous item they provide is a wine bucket, but no ice. It looks glamorous in photos but it's basically useless. They do provide a large jug of water that is easy to use, though -- it was like having running water. There are cups and glasses, but no silverware or plates. (As one reviewer said, it *is* camping after all.) They do provide bathroom towels, hand towels, and washcloths. The bed doesn't have a headboard like it shows in the photos, so you can't sit up in bed and read or talk. That's annoying because the pillows keep falling behind the bed. The nightstands are just orange crates, so they're too small and too short. They should replace those with small tables. There are a couple of hooks (one was directly over the center of the bed, which I thought was odd) and only one small side table that already had a bunch of stuff on it. So there's no place to put anything unless you leave it outside on the picnic table. The setup is just really inconvenient. The photos show a bed with a headboard, a fluffy white comforter, and huge pillows, as well as a vintage mirror and colorful banners. Well, in truth the bedspread is a motel-room print, the pillows are small, there's no mirror or headboard, and the banner is kind of faded. The bed was super comfortable and warm, though. The bed linens didn't feel super soft (they advertise egyptian cotton), but they were fine. The only thing is, they're washed in something that smells really strong. Like scented bleach. The smell got all over our backpacks and we could still smell it at home. I honestly have no idea why they charge an extra $50 per night for a dog. The only possible thing the dog could affect is the bedspread, which I doubt they wash each time unless it's visibly dirty. I could understand a $25 flat fee, but $50 a night for what is basically a floor and a bed seems crazy. The site itself isn't that pretty. There was an old crushed beer can onsite, and it's basically weeds that are mown down. But in the distance you can see the ocean and the stars were gorgeous. There's still a little light pollution from the office lights that are on all night, but it's dark enough to see the stars well. As for hikes, it's not a pretty wilderness. Mostly scrub grass, swampy areas, and some poison oak. We drove to some nice cliff beaches. There's no cafe onsite, and most local cafes don't open early or have wifi. Unless you really want to camp, there are hotels at similar prices. read more

Better than ever. I had visited for rides a few times since the 90's. Returned this weekend for my child to experience his first ride. Devon was helpful in setting up our ride. Our guide (Annabelle) was knowledgeable and friendly. We did the Eagle View trail and the ocean views were incredible as we saw Llamas and Yaks. I got to be a cowgirl for a day...and loved it! We went horseback riding through sand dunes and onto an almost people-less beach. The trot of the horse made me want to giddyup. The views of the ocean along the coast were awe-inspiring. The sound of the waves crashing against the surf was relaxing. Since this was a beach ride, we were only on asphalt for probably 30 seconds. But the clomping of the horseshoes against the asphalt got me all wild...I had to restrain myself from yelling repeatedly "I'm a cowgirl, yeah I'm a cowgirl...giddyup!" The wranglers were great, the horses were healthy and cared for, so whatcha waiting for...go giddyup! P.S. I think I know where I should retire. On a horse ranch next to the ocean. My aunt & uncle were driving their 40ft RV across the country and we recommended this location to them because we love to camp at Wrights Beach, which is very close, but they don't take 40 ft RV's. After several attempts to contact them by leaving messages and emails they were able to make reservations for mid April. Imagine their surprise when they drove up to Chanslors "Guest" Ranch only to have the person there say "Sorry, but we no longer take large RV"!!! But, we have a reservation!!!! Sorry, the large RV's ruin our grass. Can you imagine? I have reservations and am turned away, when they knew the size of the RV when I made the reservation. I would highly suggest NOT staying at this location. There are several other accommodating options in the area. read more

My wife and I took a short belated honeymoon and she was a long time horse back rider. Me, never been on one :) But I wanted to... She booked a surprise trip up to Bodega Bay and a visit to Chanslor Ranch for a private ride. When we got there it was so beautiful. After signing in we met our guide Brite (I hope that you you spell it.) She introduce us to our horses (Ugg and Roscoe) took me over to get saddled up and then after a few quick instructions we were off!!! All I have to say that this was the best time ever, we rode for about 90 minutes, stopped took some pictures and had a blast. I would only recommend that you remember your sun screen ;) Even with cloud cover you can get cooked. Bottom line... WE WILL BE BACK! read more

My friend Lisa is Ms. Adventurous. She enrolled us in trapezing class once and for her birthday, we had a double date up at Chanslor Ranch for a one and a half hour horseback ride to the beach. Romantic, huh? We drove 1.5 hours up 101 to Petaluma and down Bodega to Bodega Bay. Found the ranch relatively easily, pulled up and since we were early, we just hung out at the barn and whiffed up the good ole country air. It cost $70 for this ride and we mounted up on horses. I had never done it before and yes, I was slightly apprehensive about getting on a horse. I had Honey, who loves to follow the leader. Fortunately I was right behind the leader and I was lucky to have a horse who mimicked every single step. You hold the reins and if you want to go right you pull it to the right and left for the left. You pull back to stop. Fortunately Honey followed Lucas almost to a tee, so I didn't have to worry too much about the reins. It was a beautiful ride, but definitely recommend long pants. You go over a lot of bushes and there are branches that stick out. I also recommend stretching before you get on a horse, because we were all sore afterwards on our rear ends and knees!! Our guide, Nance, was great and did a good job watching over us. We even trotted for a bit, which was kind of scary but fun at the same time. A definite must-do! read more

Had an incredible weekend camping at Chanslor Ranch. I have lived in Sonoma County for over 40 years, passed by this place a million times but never stopped here. I'm a single, middle-aged, woman and I recently bought a small trailer and wanted to take it somewhere close to home for the maiden voyage. Was pleasantly surprised with Chanclor Ranch! Reservations were super simple, the staff is amazing and so accommodating! When we arrived, the camp Host (Donnie) came out to greet us and help us set up. I was there with my trailer and my adult son, daughter in law, and their 2 boys with theirs. The sites were huge and with full hookups. Donnie spent a fair amount of time helping set up both campers for maximum views of the coastline. Turns out Donnie is a total gem! His help and wit were extremely valuable and made our stay so much fun! He even teased us with 3 scorpions he had in a bucket. The boys loved it! We pretty much had the campground to ourselves on Friday night but the place filled up like crazy on Saturday. Apparently when the state park fills up, people are desperate for a campsite and many look to this place for the night. Donnie and his wife were so awesome to get the tired families off the road and next to a roaring campfire in no time at all. The restrooms were very clean with plenty of hot water for showers. There is an overflow restroom in the barn. My only suggestion would be to add another restroom or two that does not include a shower in it because that seemed to keep the lines long for people that were waiting for the toilet only. The facilities are obviously new and well tended. Seems like there's a camping spot for everyone's needs, plenty of tent areas and of course the trailer sites with hook ups. The horse riding is run by a separate company and I took my oldest grandson for the hour ride around the property. Excellent time for us too! Can't say enough how helpful Donnie and his wife were... He even came by and helped me hookup my trailer making it super easy for me... He's an asset to the ranch that's for sure! I will definitely be staying there again, the price is right, the distance is super easy, and I know if I run into any trouble, the best camp host is there to help! read more

We did the Chanslor Ranch beach ride back in 2009, and had a lot of fun. It was the first time either my girlfriend or I had been on a horse in over 20 years, but the staff made things easy and comfortable for us, and the horses were pretty mellow. As it turned out, we were the only ones doing the beach ride, so we basically got a private ride for the cost of a group ride, which allowed us to chat more with the guide. Once we were comfortable, she had us bring the horses to a trot several times, which was pretty cool (but a little strenuous trying not to bounce in the saddle). Even though it was a foggy day, it lifted enough for us to get some nice views, and an hour and a half was the perfect amount of time to ride. read more

Went to go on a ride with a gift certificate that was purchased 3 months before the new owner purchased the ranch and they would not honor the gift certificate. The owner was VERY rude and while we attempted to talk to her over the phone (she is on vacation in Hawaii) she informed us that she "can't feed her horses on somebody else's gift certificate." The ONLY thing that changed from the time the certificate was purchased to today is the owners name. They use the same horses, name, trail ride names, logo, etc. Very rude and unprofessional. I highly recommend taking your business to a more professional company. After posting my review here and on FB I was verbally attacked by the operators boyfriend. Here is an example of this companies professionalism: The ranch name has been the same for a very long time. The stable operator has not. The previous operator chose to use the ranch name, the current operation is Horse N Around Trail Rides. They provide trail rides both on the ranch as well as off-site. Clearly you are mistaken because in your own picture the telephone #s are different. Make all the impact you want sweetheart, positive or negative. I can assure you they neither need nor want business from customers like you. Another example: For the main ranch/accommodations it is unchanged. For the stables it is different. I wasn't defending her, I was just pointing out that you're not being very rational. Fortunately, trash like you rarely makes it out of the dumpster to attempt interrupting her very successful business. read more

Had a very good experience here. It was mine and my husband's first time riding horses and the folks here were understanding and made us comfortable. It was the 2 of us and another single gentleman on our ride, plus the guide made 4 people. We had a very nice 75 minute ride on the Salmon Creek Trail. The horses were all very nice and cooperative as well. The only tough part about this, and perhaps about any horse guided tour, is that there isn't much guiding. We really didn't learn anything about where we were or what we were looking at. This may not be the fault of our guide, but rather just the way it has to be when everyone is in a line and the guide is at the front. Can't exactly talk to the group or explain anything. So it was a quiet and peaceful ride, and we very much enjoyed it. Plus we did pull over at one point and the guide took some pictures of us on the horses. We took our kids here (ages 9, 11, & 15) and we went on the beach ride! It was amazing! The trail was beautiful! We each had to guide our own horse, which was a lot of fun! We have very little experience with horses & our guide (Danny) did an awesome job of helping us & teaching us how to guide our horse. Being a former trail guide, I would never ride at a ranch that does not take good care of it's horses. I saw Chanslor ranch from the highway and pulled over to take a look at the beautiful horses. They were grazing in a large pasture and they all looked healthy and happy. I called from my hotel and booked a 3PM ride on the Salmon Creek Trail. My (huge) mare, Grace was anxious to get out and I went with Anyel on Piper. The ranch is very scenic and the trail led down to the creek and up into the headlands with a beautiful view of the ocean as well. Anyel is a skilled rider and fantastic and thoughtful guide. She kept looking back to insure my safety, which was clearly a priority. Anyel was fun to ride with and extremely knowledgeable about the area, especially the wildlife. She has great stories about the horses and a wonderful personality. I would absolutely ride here again. The horses are well cared for and happy, with healthy feet and teeth.
