A careful walk through the store reminded me of the legendary Wilkes Bashford on Sutter Street, back in the 1980s. Like the original Wilkes, Button Down offers beautiful Italian and European styles, along with famous brands and their own private label. They also carry luxurious accessories for men and women. Greg, who had also worked at Wilkes in its heyday, helped me put together an entire ensemble. It was like a trip back in time, with the same quality, personal attention and service that is nearly impossible to find anymore. Button Down is located on Sacramento Street in Presidio Heights, and it is well worth the visit.

We were respectful and handled the clothes with care while browsing and found a couple of pieces that my daughter tried on in the fitting room and was going to purchase. While she was getting dressed, I was re-checking a few of the racks to make sure I did not miss anything. The clerk made a comment "How many times are you going to look before you buy anything?". We were at the store maybe 15 minutes at this point. We are previous customers who have spent a lot of money at this store including 2 silk Chubas (green and maroon). We walked out disgusted and disappointed.

A Huge Mistake Doing Business With Them…read more Doing business with this company was a huge mistake for me, and I would never do it again. I consigned 20 items with them. From my experience, everything is completely on the customer. When you consign your items, you are responsible for remembering when the consignment period ends and contacting them if you want to extend it or take your items back. I understand that this responsibility is written in the paperwork, but I still believe a professional consignment business should make a reasonable effort to communicate with its customers. In my case, they never contacted me to remind me about my items or the consignment deadline. When I forgot to reach out, they simply let the situation continue. They even sold two of my items after the consignment period, and I was not paid for those sales. I also had an issue where an item was apparently lost. I had to repeatedly contact them and keep track of everything myself to figure out what happened. The biggest problem is the lack of communication and accountability. You have to follow every single item yourself, remember every deadline, and constantly contact them. If you don't, it feels like they simply move on and you are left trying to figure everything out. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this company for consignment. I regret doing business with them, and I will never consign my items with them again.

What an amazing gem of a Vintage shop!…read more This shop has everything you could want. The majority of their clothing is high end luxury brands that are gently used or new. I really appreciated that they had all different price points and there was something for everyone. I could tell they rotate their clothing and since it's January, they have many beautiful coats out to choose from (or just browse!). I loved all the high quality pieces, with many skirts, blouses pants shoes and the men's section is also stunning. There's something special about actually going to a physical store and seeing the fabrics and getting that tactile experience vs. online shopping. I chose three different leather jackets and a longer coat to try on and I ended up purchasing the coat. (That happened to be new with tags) The staff was very helpful and I liked that they let you shop but also were there if you had any questions. They were really lovely and I'm glad I got to check this special place out! I came on a Saturday, the parking was tricky (but of course it is, it's the city!) however they did explain before brunch hours it's pretty easy to find a spot along the street. I'll definitely be coming back with some fashionable friends in the future!

When I went in the store the young lady asked what I was looking for and what was the occasion. I explained what I had in mind, she said let me show you a couple dresses, one was a maybe and the other was a no. She showed me the next one and it was perfect, I tried it on and didn't even need to try the other dress. Amazing, I have never gone in a store, brought three items in, tried one on and it was perfect! I then thought, it doesn't have a price and I'm sure it's going to be expensive... but I loved it and told myself I'll pay $300. I asked how much and she looked it up, $125! I'll take it . I also told her and her Mom the owner of the store that I was looking for something for my five year old granddaughter as a shawl, showed her the dress she was wearing to the gala and the owner said wait right here I think I have something perfect. She came back and she was right! Then she was kind enough to give it to us. This store is amazing, I'll definitely go back for another update to my closet. Great selection of quality clothing and a fair price! You can't beat the customer service. A word of caution, pay attention to the parking signs, I parked one block up and didn't see the street cleaning signs. I got a parking ticket for $125 :( but all in all still under my budget and I have a great dress. Here's a photo of my family at the event.

The Vintage Fashion Expos are held in both San Francisco and Santa Monica twice a year (in both…read morecities). I've been trying to get out to the one in Manhattan, but for one reason or the other the timing hasn't been right - finally there was one right in my hood. One must be a true lover of all things vintage (or at least a lot of things vintage) to go to one of these events - it's not for the weak of heart... It's your typical Expo feel with sorts of "booths" of different Vintage shops and resellers lining whatever convention hall or exhibit area they inhabit. The thing with a vintage show is that once you step foot inside, you must quickly acclimate to what some loving refer to as the lovely "grandmother smell." We acclimated and started trapsing thru the aisles of goodies ... I was on a mission to find a few key items: unique vintage handbags (shock of all shocks if you know me at all) and a killer vintage fur (sorry PETA friends, but I'm being honest). There was definitely plenty of choose from along the handbags: some amazing old Judith Leiber clutches (before she got into the Swarovski line) and some unbelievable skins. There was a large selection of pretty much anything you could desire vintage - some things a bit too vintage for me... Based on my observations, Expos like this attract two kinds of people: 1) the hip, fashionable city dwellers that want their own unique flair, and 2) the vintage die-hards that eat, sleep and breathe everything vintage - we're talking flashbacks of Casablanca ... Either way, they're a fun event to check out at some point. And I am definitely looking forward to the show in Manhattan in October!

This is heaven for vintage lifestylers and collectors. Going here bumped me from "I wish I had…read moreenough vintage to wear it all the time" to "It's hard for me to find an outfit in my wardrobe that ISN'T vintage." Whether you are a vintage nut or just getting into it, this is the place for you. Something missing from your vintage collection? You will without a doubt find it here. New to vintage? It's like Disneyland. Just please don't squeal about which Mad Men characters would wear the dress you're looking at - it's embarrassing for everyone. To make your experience enjoyable, wear separates, easy-to-remove shoes, and a sturdy hairstyle. The dressing rooms are gender-segregated but communal, so make sure you're comfortable being in your undies with five other people in their undies. There are clothes here for everyone regardless of gender - menswear lovers, this is one of the few places where you won't feel discriminated against! Heck, there's even enough children's vintage here to fill up your kid's wardrobe if the whole family's gotta match. Most importantly, do NOT be intimidated by the "$$$" at the top of this page - you can find every style and every era at every price if you take the time. Never pass by a booth simply because it looks expensive. Sellers can surprise you, and most are willing to bargain within reason. If you make a big deal out of loving something and are nice, many will bring the price down a bit. And if you find something you love at a price that's too much, look around some more - I almost bought $85 capris but wound up with $25 ones that were 85% as cool. The vintage expo is overwhelming but amazing. Set aside the day and you'll leave with something you'll treasure for the rest of its stay in your closet.
