So good! Counter service kiosks which I think is great for this concept. My BF didn't know what he should order so the pictures helped him, and he could order at his own pace. When your food is ready, they call your name over a microphone and you bring it to your table, which is available on a first come first serve basis. There's not really anyone working the front counter, which I thought was interesting. There's picnic tables out front where people were sitting with their dogs, so appears to be pet friendly outside. I had the curry with tofu and vegetables. I ordered spicy and enjoyed it. The heat kind of creeps up on you. I will order this again. BF had the chicken katsu - the chanko sauce was so good on it. The pickled daikon is a great touch, and if you like pickled veggies, that tiger slaw is AMAZING. We ordered a small plum wine to split. Portion sizes are HUGE, so I appreciated that everything was served in to-go containers. We definitely had leftovers that I may or may not have eaten for breakfast this morning. One thing I felt could be improved is that it's a little warm inside. Clearly they know that because there were fans on the counter. Came here for lunch on a whim and it was fantastic! It was a bit crowded during lunch time and is a smaller space but we made it work! It's a self service station so you basically go up to the counter and order your food and pick it up when they call your name. They have other street food like beef bowls, katsu, katsu curry, etc and also drinks and sauces too. My husband and I had the following: Beef katsu curry - 8/10 - The beef was grilled well and we loved the smokey taste but it was just a tiny bit dry. The curry was legit!! We've been to Japan and had plenty of curry and the flavor was on point. It had a strong curry taste just how we like it and the potatoes and carrots were tender. I can't tell you how much we loved that curry! The meal came with rice and picked yellow radishes too. The radishes helped cut the heaviness of the curry with it's acidity. They give you a pretty huge portion as well too and we had plenty leftover to take home. Hiro classic okonomiyaki - 9/10 - It had a crepe base, yakisoba noodles, cabbage, leeks, bean sprouts, fried egg, furikake, seaweed flakes (aonoriko), tempura crisps, and house okonomi sauce, and Kewpie Japanese Mayo. I chose to have pork belly as my protein and when I tell you this was one of the most delicious things I've EVER eaten, I'm not lying! The portion size was huge and all the flavors were just WOW! The noodles were tender, the pork belly just melted in my mouth, and the combination of all the fresh, crisp veggies and sauces on top was chef's kiss. Everything worked so well together! I loved how they put tempura crisps on top because it needed that textural element. I loved how I could taste a little bit of acid as well because the okonomiyaki was pretty heavy but the acidity helps with it. Came here before a concert for dinner and it is a cool cheap eats spot to be at in Tampa! Looks like it was in an old fashioned diner redesigned to be retro and izakaya based and is good to sit at and eat or carry out. I must say this place has become one of my favorite places to eat at after just one visit. The vibes are so good, with it being a repurposed diner into an Asian restaurant. Not much seating inside but it's manageable and there is also outdoor seating if the weather isn't bad. The parking is also on the smaller side but there is nearby street parking as well. I'm from Orlando and one thing we're lacking is Japanese restaurants that aren't just sushi and ramen. While on a trip to the west coast for a concert I did some searching and Chanko hit 2 of my favorite dishes - curry and okonomiyaki. I wasn't prepared for the sheer awesomeness of the unique design of this place. It's a mullet - brick and mortar in the back and 50's diner party in the front. Stepping in it only gets cooler from there with retro Japanese toys and crazy decor everywhere. I honestly forgot to take pics of food because I was having too much fun staring at the stuff all over the walls. My anti-social self loves the low contact - order at kiosk, food pops out from the back. We ordered a hiroshima style okonomiyaki with a side of spicy veggie curry and mentaiko mayo and my friend got a shrimp rice box with their chanko sauce. All the proteins were cooked to perfection, the rice was fluffy and well furikake'd and that tiger slaw is addictively sour and sweet. The okonomiyaki was a bit more noodle-y than I expected as I really enjoy the cabbage batter more, but it wasn't a problem, more like a blessing in disguise, as it served as the perfect vehicle for the curry which was delicious and not just 'chuck in a roux cube and call it a day' taste. I'd love if they'd open up a location in Orlando but I guess this just means I need to come to Tampa more often! read more

Oh my goodness. I came here to eat with my Dad (he found this spot!) and I am so impressed and pleased!! I created a vegan veg okonomiyaki with the customizations on the kiosk and my dad got the shrimp rice bowl. I will say, initially I was hesitant because I've made my own Japanese curry at home and I really didn't want this one to just be a copy and paste of the instant curry cubes (because it's not any more unique to me than making it at home) and I am so happy to report, the curry does have a typical Japanese curry flavor profile but it's definitely spiced and zhuzhed up and soo flavorful and spicy! basically, I could not replicate it. I was completely blown away by the vegan oko, it's HUGE (like probably going to take me 3-4 sittings to eat) and it's got crazy textures, cabbage, bean sprouts, noodles, tempura crunchies, the soft crepe, and of course the fried tofu. We've eaten here roughly six times and the experience has been consistent. You order from a touchscreen at the counter and they call your name when food is ready. I would appreciate bringing in some more veg choices as I am low carb and don't do noodles or rice. I love their tiger slaw, but it's got too much sugar for me - but that's why it tastes so good! I usually go for the pork belly- well, the way they USED to cook it. I understand they may not have a lot of call for fresh veggies for salads, but they could at least offer a braised cabbage side since they serve cabbage with the Okonomiyaki - (which I cannot ask for no noodles, or crepe, or rice puffs). I also got a side of karage which I would've liked to be the cutlet pictured with the curry rather than chunks all coated in breading - just because it would be a little less carbs in the cutlet. The food here is incredible. This is easily the best chicken katsu that I have had. You must get it with their spicy Chanko sauce. It is really spicy, but add so much flavor.
