A few people I know have suggested Chang's Wok Inn recently; so on a Monday afternoon a friend and I decided to pop in and check it out. We were seated fairly quick by our waitress. They had a lunch special that ended at 2:30p and we were ordering at 2:31p. I asked if we could still get the lunch special and she said no. Despite that, we found something on the menu and no sooner did we place the order, our waitress walked out with our food. It was freaky fast how quickly our food came out! This place might as well have been a fast food Chinese restaurant. Despite how quickly it came out, the food was top notch. Some of the best I've had in a long while. My friend said his food was good as well. Upon leaving, we were discussing Chang's and my friend mentioned that he was dissatisfied with the service. Not that it was bad, but the waitress barely said more than 3 words and treated us as if we were a bit of a nuisance. I didn't pay much attention to that while there but once he mentioned it, I would have to agree. This place would've gotten a 5/5 if the service was a bit more... personable. But I am still rating them high since the food came out super quick and was very delicious. They also offer food to go, if you want to grab some and take it home. Hard to understand server and she was a bit rude. When we asked about the meal not looking like the menu she said the meals are not like pictured. To me, that is false advertising. Well, second time getting carryout, and not much different than the first. Ordered sesame chicken, pork pad Thai, crab Rangoon, and egg roll. Sesame chicken was more like sweet and sour chicken, maybe I received the wrong order. Way to sweet for me. I had never had Pad Thai: This version had very little pork, maybe an eighth of an ounce mixed into a quarter pound of onions and 3 pounds of sticky noodles. Had perfect amount of spice for me but zero flavor. Crab Rangoon were cooked perfect. Egg roll seemed like it was a high quality frozen variety. They forgot the rice also. Reluctantly, I returned only because the food was good last time. This time, I was prepared to check my receipt for obligatory gratuity and adjust accordingly. To my surprise, dinner time made a difference. The seating area was more clean, there were a lot of to-go orders, and the service was amazing. Our server checked on us several times and was very kind. We tried the Happy Family and Hunan Beef. I enjoyed the spicy Hunan Beef which had a nice balance of beef and vegetables. However, it was a little too salty for my guest. The Happy Family also had a nice large portion of various proteins and vegetables. Unfortunately, the sauce was rather bland and taste was average. This is a very delicious Chinese restaurant. It hits the points I look for - cheap prices, large portions, crunchy and crispy vegetables, lots of variety of food. The to go boxes they give are always clean and put together neatly, it doesn't make me too sad that I am not sitting down to eat. My favorite is the cumin lamb - strong cumin smell, flavorful, tender, juicy lamb slices. It's definitely a hole in the wall because it's in a small plaza, but the quality tops most Chinese restaurants here. The owners are also very friendly and hardworking. If you see a Chinese owner / worker at a Chinese restaurant, you know it's authentic. read more

I did extensive research on Yelp to find the perfect Chinese restaurant for my trip to Peoria. Unfortunately, I don't think I picked the right one. One of my main reasons for selecting Chang's over Golden Kitchen and Chinatown was ease of ordering online through the Yelp app. Another reason was proximity to where I would be staying, the Holiday Inn at Prairie Grove. Price also factored into my decision. I ordered crab rangoons, shrimp fried rice, and vegetable lomein for $21. Here is a breakdown: Crab rangoons: Priced well at $4.99 for 6. I found them a little sweet, but creamy. Not bad, just not the best I've ever had. Shrimp fried rice: Good in flavor, but something felt off. I don't know if the oil they used was old or the veggies weren't fresh. I can't quite put my finger on it. But this was better than the lomein. Vegetable lomein: Very disappointing. The noodles used were fettuccine type instead of thin spaghetti noodles. I asked for it to be spicy, but it was definitely lacking in spice and flavor. They also failed to include utensils, as I clearly requested online, so I had to eat it with my hands, which made it even worse. read more

I have ordered pickup several times this last month as I live across the street in Ravinwoods subdivision and it is convenient, however, I feel I need to write a review and normally don't bother but......the last 2 times were horrible! Ordered my food without nuts due to an allergy. As I started to have an allergic reaction I called the restaurant to make sure that my meal was not exposed to nuts and they reassured me that there was no possibility. Upon entering Resteraunt your politely greeted and also see individuals sitting waiting to take orders home. The restaurant is 13 tables so it is not too big. It's pleasantly decorated. And most important food is just a stick. Everything is cooked well and fresh. This is the only Chinese restaurantmy wife enjoys going to. I especially like the spring rolls as an appetizer , Six small spring rolls with your order. Will definitely come again, again, and again. A friend of mine recommended this restaurant to me recently and I had high expectations since the food on their website looks soooo good! I like to try new things, and was surprised to find one of their dishes called "Scotland Crispy Beef." After ordering it and trying it all I can say is wow! I couldn't seem to stop eating this dish and I commend Chang's Wok Inn for having something on their menu that I've never seen at any other Chinese restaurant. (And believe you me, I have been to MANY! :) The dish had a nice smoky /bbq-like seasoning to it, well seasoned and chewy-crispy, great with rice). Ordered a mini-bok choi vegetable dish with garlic that went well with it too. Though we just ordered food to go, the service was really efficient and friendly. The ambiance is also really nice, with good lighting and nice furniture. It's definitely one of the best-looking Chinese restaurants I've seen. I ordered the Schezwan Tofu, my son ordered the Beef Tendon Noodle Soup. Both were from the "Authentic Chinese" portion of the menu. The tofu did not taste very good at all. It was not sour/spoiled, but the flavor of this dish seemed just off. Either way, it did not taste very good. First, I'm glad they are open Sundays-expanding our lazy Sunday take-out menu collection is hard in Peoria: "the city where everything closes on Sunday" Second, they have a pretty great website with their food so I don't have to get out my magnifying glass to read these scanned in menu uploads. But......the food could use a little work. Ordered a trio of items to share including this Crispy Beef that keeps making an appearance in reviews. Eww, seriously?? There was NO meat in the little squiggly bright red Cheeto looking twists of deep fried dough. I so wish I had taken a picture before we tossed it out, I notice no one else has included a photo of with their professed love of the Scotland (how authentically Chinese is Scotland??) Crispy Beef. A quick Google search reports: not even one hit. The Seasoned Mixed Veg were super fresh with excellent crunch in a very tasty garlicky sauce. Included broccoli, thin sliced carrots, mushrooms, bamboo shoots & water chestnuts. Would totally get this again. The shrimp lo mein was pretty decent. Shrimps were pretty mushy but had good flavor and there were additional vegetables included with the noodles. Probably would not get the shrimp part again but would try another variety of the lo mein. Overall, I am going to keep their menu clipped with my other trusty Sunday menus and will give them a couple more shots to see if they deserve their spot. Coming from the Chicagoland area and willing to jump in the car and head to Chinatown, we were a little worried that we were moving to a Chinese-food dead zone and would have to settle. So it is with indescribable joy that I happily announce that we hit a home run the first time out. The food was simply delicious. We went for our old standbys and ordered crab Rangoon, fried rice, beef with broccoli and my youngest's favorite, sweet and sour chicken. I don't kid myself- S/S chicken is about as Chinese as a fortune cookie. However, as unauthentic as it is, it's also a fairly decent barometer for the quality of food you're going to get. It will sneakily tell you if your restaurant of choice knows.... How to make a good batter Has someone paying attention to cook time How often is the frying oil changed out Can your cook make a decent sauce This dish rocked it. The chicken was encased in a light fluffy batter, cooked perfectly and gave a light crunch. Clearly someone is paying attention to the oil - the chicken was light colored (as it should ) and clean tasting with no burn smells or smell/flavor of other dishes. The sauce was an excellent balance of sweet and sour The beef with broccoli was wonderful. A nice garlic flavor permeated the dish, the perfect compliment The combo fried rice was outstanding. Nice sized small shrimp, not 'salad shrimp' and nice slices of beef. Presentation was really nice as well. The crab Rangoon looked like origami. Nice touch! As another reviewer mentioned, you wouldn't expect much, walking in from a strip mall but once inside you'd never guess there is a dry cleaner right next door. The decor was very pretty and CLEAN! This place was spotless. Lastly, the staff could not have been more attentive. Friendly and pleasant. And fast! I think my most difficult choice is going to be do I stay and eat or call in for take out. They also offer a traditional Chinese menu for the more adventurous. And lunch specials! Because of the containers that they put them in, I noticed that the portion of the Crispy & Spicy Diced Chicken was significantly smaller than when I dined in. I stopped by here returning from Champaign. At first glance, the outside appeared quite small, but upon entering, their was formidable and ample seating that you aren't able to see from the outside. You're greeted with simple yet beautiful decor and crisp, clean table settings. Most Chinese restaurants I've been to have those folding tables, splotchy carpets and musty chairs, but here everything is warm, inviting and clean. Staff was generously polite and friendly. They served amazing loose-leaf tea in the teapot! Would have only expected this in a specialized tea-house. I ordered a few items from the Authentic Chinese Menu. As one of the other reviewers have mentioned, the house eggplant is incredible. Even if you think you don't like eggplant, its worth a try. Great combination of texture and rich flavors. The crispy and spicy chicken leaned on the slightly too-salty side of things, but it was made up by the delicious boiled fish. I definitely will come back to try more of the fish dishes. This place has some of the best Chinese food in the Peoria area. The prices are fairly reasonable as well. I do wish they would deliver, but it is not hard to get to, so pickup is easy. The staff are warm and welcoming and just a very nice bunch of people. I want to give them 3.5 stars, but that is not an option. Good choice for the more pedestrian palate, as well as those looking to try something different. Love the Singapore Rice Noodles and the Stewed Beef Noodle Soup is quite good, as are the Beef with scallions, crispy string beans with pork, and the Pad Paradise (HUGE shrimp!). I've tried many of their dishes and the only ones I haven't been happy with are the Pad Thai (which was just sort of plain) and the chicken with broccoli (which had a white sauce, and I prefer brown). read more
