The staff was great, quick and attentive even with a significant amount of people ordering drinks and crowding around the runway, checked on us frequently and made sure we never had an empty glass. I went here for years, they advertise as a gay bar even though they're not. And they prefer to hire straight bartenders over gay bartenders and aren't afraid to say it out loud. This place propagate straightness, for years I had to deal with dehumanization from the other patrons, they would often let in arbitrary and very homophobic and transphobic customers, and the owners take their money just so these straight people can gawk, fondle, molest, rub up against, violate, and verbally dehumanize queer people as they get more drunk which the staff encourages. Never ever ever ever go to this place if you are LGBT, it's a lion's den for us and you will be dehumanized. The staff actually encourages it, beware and stay far away. Because if you have any problems with the patrons no matter how horrible they treat you or what they do to you physically, the staff will always take the straight people side here because they're in it for the money. I recently visited changes and had an exceptional experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by Jack with a warm, friendly atmosphere that immediately made me feel welcome. The décor is stylish and cozy, creating a perfect setting for a night out. The drink menu is impressive, and if you visit on a Tuesday they offer a wide range of very good priced beers. Jack was clearly skilled and passionate about his craft, creating beautifully presented and delicious drinks. I highly recommend trying his signature cocktail-it was a perfect blend of flavors. He was also ready to provide recommendations and ensure I had everything I needed. The service was prompt and professional, yet laid-back enough to keep the vibe relaxed. I'm a bi white male 5'7. I've been living in Wallingford for 2 years now and have been to Changes probably 5 times. EVERY SINGLE time that I've walked into changes I have had my ass grabbed, poked, or patted COVERTLY by complete strangers. This seems to be an issue that the owners and employees don't give a shit about. I've been told that this is "just a part of older gay culture" by other patrons (and friends, even!). How about this: it's 2019 and older guys DO NOT GET A PASS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT. Clean up your act, Changes, or you're going to be out of business for lack of patrons who understand the concept of CONSENT. Talk to your regulars, post a sign, host a consent workshop. Whatever it takes, just DO BETTER. read more

There is an unfortunate aspect to this which merits attention. To wit, a bartender working there has been cited for serving underage customers and is not only still working there, but presents as unrepentant on the subject. The environment has become analogous to 'cracker' type bars I have been in elsewhere, which seems strange in the U-District, to say the least. Used to go here all the time cause of the lenient "smoking" policy on the back patio. We alway referred to this place as Cringes becasue of the seedy atmoshpere and clientel. This is the only gay bar were I have been bitched out "we don't like your kind around here" style. It was the fasted thing to make but still had to wait for awhile for a simple dish. Plus it was just potato chips, not fries so what's taking so long.
