OK, so me and my friends were looking for karaoke. We had a few places that failed but we found a great LGBTQ bar that welcomes everybody. We thought it was odd that there was a five dollar cover charge, but we went ahead and paid it. It was card only so we went and we got our drinks. It was very busy very packed. All is welcome great ambience we were even lucky enough to get a seat. Well within 15 minutes of coming and sitting down with our drinks we realize that later on in the evening, it was a drag queen karaoke. It was amazing. We had a great time. We just wish we would've brought more singles for the tips. We definitely come back to this place and bring friends I really like the ambience how everyone is welcome here it is street parking but it was a real safe feeling environment and everyone was super friendly and the drag queens and their karaoke and they're singing and their performances were all super on point and amazing. I ended up staying in downtown Tacoma and wanted to go out for a few drinks so I decided to check out the two gay bars they have here. Of course I went on Yelp like always do and checked out all the reviews and I saw so many bad ones... that sucks that so many people have had bad experiences and maybe I just got lucky. I walked in around 1800-1900 and it wasn't busy but wasn't dead either. The bartenders were nice and made conversation while I had a couple beers. I went outside and ended up meeting some people and had some more conversation. They seemed like regulars but we're pretty welcoming not all of them in the group but most of them. I would say the place is semi clicky but I expect that from WA gays lol. The bar is semi small and has a lower deck area where they host karaoke every night and drag shows. They don't have a dance floor which is fine by me because i clearly am not a dancer. If you want a chill dive bar to go to I would say this place will do. I went by myself and knew no one and I still managed to have a good time. I would go back in the future when im in TCM again. read more

The bartenders are really really rude now. Been coming here since 2010 and I've never experienced so much rudeness. I'm a really polite person with strong boundaries that has worked in customer service my entire life. I'm never rude to customers. I don't know how this place stays in business serving such a small niche population and then treating them like s**t. Their bad reputation is going to get around enough that they will have to close their doors. I'm giving it even three stars only because I am a supporter of gay owned businesses, but I didn't actually get to enjoy the place to fully review it. Don't forget to bring your ID, potential patrons!!!! My wife who is 62 and served this country for 32 years, was denied a Bud Light because she went walking without an ID. Her fault, I guess, but come on...we're both obviously over 60 and it was early evening on a weekday. It's not a state or local law because we've gotten served elsewhere, often. I'm sorry something happened to them to make full ID their policy. We'd have loved to have stayed there to spent our money. Maybe some other time. read more

I've been coming here since it became the mix in 2008. I've been through all the iterations of ownership and I've enjoyed my time. Except for the most recent and final visit. I brought up a price discrepancy of $1 to the bar owner and manager. The menu sign said one price but they overcharged me. The manager called me cheap because it was just $1. I posted to Facebook about this issue and a different owner told me that I shouldn't care and that my money was better off in their coffers than in my pocket. Because they are doing a "fundraising event for the community". They never apologized and instead also called me names and said I wasn't welcome back the following year. They are shady and they think that it's ok for them to fraudulently collect YOUR funds for their purposes. (They we're fully aware of the discrepancy yet chose not to correct the sign. Then he stops me because I carry a baton, which is valid but I offer to let him hold on to it but he refuses. They hyped up their pride block party as being open 6pm-2am and charged folks 35 plus fees to get in. They had someone at the line to get in around 7:20 saying you need to buy tickets now before it gets sold. We knew the lines get long to get in(and drink) so we went and got our bracelets to come back later in the night and go through the re-entry line and because the event was marketed as being open until 2am. We came back around 11-11:30 and noticed the crowd was a little smaller and tried to go in. They weren't allowing anyone into the event and said their block party closed at midnight. We asked if they were clearing out the crowd and were told no they just weren't allowing anyone else inside. When I showed the flyer saying it was marketed as the block party was open until 2am they just said nope. This is false advertising and doing so during pride as a lgbtqia business is just ridiculous. Do better. If you are closing at midnight then market it that way!! Don't take advantage of your patrons just to line your pockets. read more

The Mix is the first of two Gay bars/clubs in Tacoma. Its a nice to meet friends there during the week, but come the weekend it'll be so packed, that you won't find room to sit. They recently made an outdoor sitting area (due to the pandemic) it's amazing! The big issue I have is that they close it at 10 PM and then force everyone to go inside the bar. Why?..... There's not rule or law for them to do that. It makes the whole experience go from one of relaxing outside and enjoying your time with friends. To fighting for a place to sit inside and being unable to hear others around you because the music is so loud. I hope they change that as it's pretty much the only reason I go. Besides the outdoor seating, the bar is very much for the younger crowd. Good people and a nice place to meet up with friends. read more

See below this one for my old review. What an awesome night that "first time" was! 7+ years later and I am now a Tacoma resident who frequents The Mix. Still one of my favorite places to go. I'm getting old and moldy, so I tend to stick to weeknights for the karaoke since it's less crazy/loud/packed. It truly is a "mix" - seems like over half the folks there are straight (but not narrow) some nights. I really dig that you can also go around the corner, pick up a pizza from PSP (Puget Sound Pizza), and bring it into The Mix. I asked someone there once if they minded that PSP had karaoke next door, and they said, "Not at all! We have a symbiotic relationship." The karaoke hosts come and go (I used to host and it is not for the faint of heart, so I get it) and I've only encountered one who was drunk and pushy, got in people's faces, yelling at them to applaud and yelling at them to tip him. Haven't seen him in awhile so he's probably gone. Like I said, I'm older (and I quit drinking 5 years ago) so I'm less tolerant of weekend craziness, but this is still a favorite place to be when I have free time. Although I *have* had experiences that weren't great there (queue screaming groups of drunk cheerleaders and frat boys), I'm not changing my 5-star rating, because anything I haven't enjoyed there has pretty much been due to the patrons, not The Mix itself. read more

Very fun venue! I can't wait to go back. We went for karaoke night and it was great to see so many people just having fun and being supportive of the singers. It was pretty packed but I would say 99% of people were wearing masks when not at a table. It got a little hot and sweaty in there though. The bar tenders here are very friendly. Gay bars are known for their use of tall glasses for mixed drinks. Come here If you want to save your money and still get inebriated. Killer drinks, bartenders and a lovely KJ for karaoke nights. Solid top 40 music selection... some underground and mellow vibes as well. Bathrooms are a little jank for lack of a better word but cool thing is there is no men's room it's gender free. Feel bad for the people who had those bad experiences in the summer time... Ok, so when I go to karaoke bar, I expect to wait for my turn. I get it. What I'm not cool with is watching the same three people sing song after song after song after (you guessed it) song. What is that shit? Really? You're going to deny me the opportunity to sing because your the DJ and your friends frequent the bar so you decide, "Eh, I guess I'll bump them up every single time while this other dude in the corner has been waiting an hour!". Yeah, I'm not going back there. Oh, and what put the cherry on top is when the DJ came over to our table to tell my wife, "I don't think your friend will make it on the list, but if you make it worth my while and slip me a "twenty", maybe I'll see what I can do." I use to frequent Silverstone and Destinies back in the day, this is a more "grown up" place to visit with friends and have great drinks! P.S- Casey's reviews for The Mix are a bit much, borderline obsessive and aggressive and not to mention offensive... 3 reviews and blows in a row? Come on! As if the first one wasnt bad enough. Furthermore, what does the rambling on about the police dept have anything to do with the review of this bar? The Mix is a gay bar but with so many straight couples here it really might live up to the namesake of being mixed. It is good to see everyone gets along well! On a weeknight the bar would be fine and spacious but on a Saturday night it is jammed packed and difficult to move around. Very difficult! There is no dance floor and they were playing karaoke there on the lower level. Not quirky enough like the big city bars for me to get into too much. On a busy night here it seems like you have to be a doer and not a observer(people watcher) or else you are in the way of others. Overall not all that impressed. The bartenders are great, honestly. That's about the only good thing I can say about this place. If you're looking to go somewhere that is perceived as "inclusive" this is the wrong spot. Have gone at least 5 times with all bad experiences. Last time I went some girl threw her beer on my friend and I for taking "her" seat that had been empty for at least 10 minutes before the drag show. Went in for karaoke. Me & my friend waited patiently while the karaoke host let all regulars & his friends go 1st. & one girl went twice 4 people from each other before we even got to sing. When I put my name on the list I was the 8th person. More people came 1/2 he later and they all were up & singing before us. . Wtf! He was pulling songs from youtube for his emo night. My friend had to sing with the band vocals on. There were exactly 15 people there. When it was my turn to sing finally! an hr later. He pulled up a song where there were no words for me to sing along with so I quickly stepped off stage & went to him with my youtube open -so he could type in the correct karaoke song/ band instead of what he typed which was just group and then the song name. He said it wont let me pull it up. I said yes it will your not typing in karaoke whichcall you have to do is type this! So hes all annoyed for someone giving him direction and instead says.. I'll just put someone else up and do this later. I said..why dont you just type in karaoke so the song comes up like I'm showing you now. I said it very politely seriously he only needed to add the word karaoke and I'd have been able to sing.. but he has an issue with being wrong obviously..he said no I'll just put someone else up 1st. all condescendingly patronizing like he wasnt even going to get to me after that. . I said that makes no sense. If you type THIS exact thing itll come up exactly as you see it on my phone & I can sing w the words! .. He again, but this time in a really asshole way said.. No I'll just put someone else up and bump you down the list and turned his back to me.. I said that's not fair since its my turn. Literally just needed to type 2 words "karaoke version" since he had the song already typed in. And he said again but this time very fuck you like. I'll just bump you way down the list. He had this entitled "I work here, you arent going to tell me what to type & if you do you will pay for suggesting the correct weblink" type of entitlement. I was so pissed I've never been treated that way for trying to be helpful (usually when a dj is pulling up youtube you tell them the exact search word so they get it right) I just said fuck that well just leave. I've waited over an hr already. & he said ok cool. What a total patronizing dick. I'll never go back there. Theres so many better sound systems in the area to sing at. She was slumming for tips or smoking or letting the same four people sing. Wtf? You have to Tip her or permanently stay at the back of the line. Fuck that. Yeah, so i went to a gay bar... Wanna fight about it? Really impressed with this place - Three levels of seating, the bottom one containing a karaoke bar... The pours are ridiculously generous and cheap and the regulars are mildly hilarious. It's a pretty dimly lit spot, which I actually prefer, although it makes it harder to convince Drunky McBaldy that I'm not there searching for a boyfriend. Anyways, good place - fun times... I would even argue that overall, gay folks are more fun to hang out with and much more pleasant drunks than the rowdy college bros that frequent most of the other Tacoma hot spots. read more

This is my neighborhood bar, and I LOVE it. Within hobbling distance of my house is the bar of legend. The place where my friends and I catch up over what could probably be classified as FAR too many drinks. This place has spurred some of the most interesting stories between my clan and I like, "remember that night I woke up in a trash can....." and "remember that night that I was trying to break into your house so I could use the toilet..." And boy am I grateful for that. The bartenders are SO sweet. I love them to death for saving my rear when I walk in going "I need a drink, just make me something!" It always turns out to be delicious, no matter what. (Thanks, Adam, for the random shots!) I love the pool table, I can cheaply entertain myself with a game of pool while I drink the night away and have a wonderful time. Last week my friend and I even managed to win a round of trivia. Oh yes, the fantabulous Mix! Since the beginning it has been a resounding success! Walking in as a stranger one can't help but feel totally welcomed and like part of the "family" from the very start. Many bars have cordial employees and most of them you never see hide nor hair of the management. Not true in this case. All patrons are greeted with a how are ya doing today instead of the immediate run-of-the-mill what can I get ya cliche'. The crowd is a truly diverse one making the name of the place very fitting. Cool dudes, dudettes, trannys, businessmen/women, neighborhood regulars & everyone in between.....they do a wonderful job keeping the place clean and free of McNasty peeps also. I cannot think of any place I have EVER been that is more deserving of highest praise in my life. You make tons of new friends, meet up with some old & have a night (or afternoon) filled with great experiences. Hats off to you all making The Mix #1 in my book now and for many years to come. The Mix is one of my favorite nightspots in Tacoma. The people are chill, the bartenders friendly, and the drinks ridiculously cheap (I'd avoid the gimlet though ... it was ... a bizarre experience). There's karaoke for those who love to belt it out, and two other rooms with stools and tables where you can get away from it if that's not your bag. Once you've sung your fill of karaoke, you can head half a block down the street for some street hot dogs and dancing at Club Silverstone. Any night that includes both The Mix and Silverstone is sure to be a great one. The Mix is the kind of place where you end up with a new best friend every time you visit, and you never know what might happen. Getting the urge to dance at their 80s Valentine's Day party this year, we pushed a few tables out of the way and soon had quite the 80s dance party going. Everybody Wayne Chung tonight! My only beefs are: A) the bizarre song selection for karaoke. There are plenty of Christmas carols (?), but no Vanilla Ice? And where's the "Wannabe" for the Spice Girls lovers? and B) the fact that they took away the credit card-accepting photo booth!! Whhhhyyyy!!! I used to bring people to The Mix expressly for that photobooth, and I have quite a collection of photo strips commemorating great nights out. Great drinks, great prices, great people. The place was full on Saturday night and the staff really makes you feel welcomed. I am new in town but did not feel out of place.
