I was very nervous coming to this appointment because I had no idea what was going to happen (and the bad reviews here). If this is you - let me ease your nerves a bit by telling you exactly what happens for the Kindergarten Readiness Screening. The office is small - just two rooms. A waiting room and the office where the screening takes place. The patent sits on the couch in the waiting room while your child goes into the office with the procter (the person conducting the test). I actually requested that they leave the door open to make my child (and myself) more comfortable. You aren't able to see them during the test but you can hear everything if they leave the door open. They ask many developmental questions similar to what a Dr would ask during an annual check up. Things like draw a circle, stand in one foot, which number is bigger etc. The woman giving the test was extremely kind and warm. The entire test lasted about 25 - 30 minutes. After about a week you receive your results in the mail with their developmental levels and the recommendations for kindergarten or to repeat TK. Honestly...I think the low reviews are mainly people who were held back a year. We had no issues whatsoever with this company so don't be frightened by the bad reviews. read more

Such a great tool for schools and parents to be able to have a baseline for where a child is at! It is a great resource to have when looking for academic, social emotional, physical, and developmental readiness. As a teacher myself I find this test to be so helpful when determining/discussing with parents what would be the best placement for their child. My daughter has been evaluated at Chancy and Bruce three separate times over the past three years and each experience with them has been wonderful. They are very helpful and accommodating with scheduling and their evaluators are patient and attentive, clearly very experienced. Their testing and assessment is ridiculous. I do NOT have any confidence in their assessments and recommendations. They are all very biased and unobjective -it appears their research which they rely on for this purpose is also very much biased and unobjective. They highly encourage (enforce) holding kids back a year regardless if the child shows academic level appropriateness for kindergarten. ****Huge red flag****: Before even testing my son, she judged with extreme prejudice by explaining how it's best that kids older than Sept 1st birthdate do not get advanced placement into Kindergarten, especially if they are young boys***. When pressed for information and facts behind this reasoning, she couldn't provide me the research or data or statistics except that they had followed kids from 1980 to college and did some random sampling and implied I should "trust" her expertise. I asked to see the research so I can understand it and (understandably have cause to blow holes in their hypothetical), but she produced nothing. I had asked what their sampling was, the mean average and standard deviation used in the research and what key points did they select to measure for maturity and why they would delay otherwise capable young kids into Kindergarten. Her reply is simply based on the hypothetical that by 3rd grade, jr high, or high school that my son would not be capable to handle the "pressure" (psychological) or feel inadequate with his physical development because he may be much younger than his peers and would not feel "confident" to participate in sports like his peers and cause him anxiety. Pardon me, but I have not seen any evidence to support these statements. My son is already reading at 4 years old and he has lots of socialization with kids older than him and at his age, and although according to their scoring, which rated at age 5 years and above and has lots of socialization and they expect to forecast his future by saying delaying his educational progress a year would better equip my son in the slight chance he wouldn't be capable of handling the emotional and psychological pressure of growing up. Attention, attention... that is called "growing up"... these are growing pains and part of "life lessons", things aren't always going to be easy for your kid and your kid will need to eventually acquire and develop the skills to accommodate and master these problems. So are we going to try to eliminate all our kids possibly emotional pain points to boost their confidence and give them a sense of entitlement that life should always be so easy for them? This, in my opinion, is a huge step backwards and why kids now would develop such a strong sense of entitlement instead of giving them an opportunity of inner growth and learning and adjusting to life challenges. Sure I get it. Some kids do need to be held back, that depends on the kid and the amount of parental support and encouragement he gets from their parent(s) and any situational conditions contributing to the child's learning environment. The parents (as the child's main support system-not the school) would have the greatest influence in their child's self confidence, personal, and educational development. It's my opinion that parents, not a system or birthdate, would be the most accurate assessor of their child's capabilities. The kids that they are saying that held back may have life conditions or situations which are causing emotional strain, or genetic dispositions or stress affecting their education...so I'd like to see the research on that and see if these situations were accounted for in their so-called research. Where is the data showing about contributing factors in these children that required being held back in school? How does that impact the results of their study? Ultimately, if you feel you'll make things easier for your son to give them a better leg up on their peers by holding them back just so they are the "oldest in the class"... consider this, are you really trying to avoid some "hypothetical" problem in the future or you avoiding the child's life learning lessons about growing up? For kids that need additional support, try supplementing with private tutoring or counseling or family counseling. Why hold back a growing mind of a sponge right now in the slight chance of an emotional situation in later years? Have you asked how many and how frequently children get held back? I did. The answer? They couldn't really say except for "I know this one kid that had to held back and my friend's kid that had to be held back...". In the overall population of ALL STUDENTS in school -in the grand scheme of things - this is likely a low percentage. I'm here to provide a review so that parents that thought this study had ANY MERIT, get an alternate understanding with another parent perspective and experience. We plan to pursue my son's current educational progress and not do Junior or TK. read more

Chancy and Bruce assesses kids' abilities and emotional maturity in 25 minutes down to the month...(and of course you have to give them your kids date of birth beforehand). No one can establish someone's maturity in such a short time, even less down to the month. They are biased towards holding kids back based mostly on their date of birth. It is tragic to hold back a young mind who is ready to absorb and learn new knowledge purely based on a date. Their research says they will do better being held back a year. Of course they'll do better being held back a year but that is like saying he or she will be taller next year. Bottom line: Parents know their kids best. Holding kids back a year is not the answer for everyone. read more

Don't trust these assessments. They have said that both my kids are not kindergarten ready. My son had this assessment done in his preschool class (2015/2016), they said he wasn't kindergarten ready and recommended he stay in pre-k for another year. He is now in kindergarten and doing great. Matter of fact, he's one of his teachers favorite students. Now my daughter is in the same preschool my son went to and this assessment is saying the same thing. I believe these people don't know what they're talking about when it comes to assessing children at such a young age in so little time. Don't trust it. If you believe your child needs a true assessment go through your school district for free. I think this company is in cahoots with the preschools trying to make money on both ends. read more

Initially I was happy and not just because the gal who assessed my daughter stated "she's ready for kindergarten." I had asked her if she was truly ready as her preschool teacher AND a kindergarten teacher both assessed her and stated she was. However when I got the official report, it stated that my daughter would benefit from a "bonus year of TK". Which is true of all children, but why tell me she's ready if you're not going to recommend her?? Especially considering I told her that if she's not ready for kinder, it's okay. read more

Update: You go by a test and or your own information. But, how will your child really do in kindergarten . I was told there was no chance my child would not be ready for kindergarten. It is now nearing the end of his kindergarten year. His teacher told me he at our first meeting that he is so well prepared for her class. This last reporting period, I'm told he is doing wonderfully. He's fully reading. His report card is near perfect. He loves school. Thank God my family is full of educators Thank God they helped me believe in him and his confidence soared! I'm not saying that going on to kindergarten, the next year is the best choice for every child. What I am saying is DON'T trust this test! read more

This is one of the worst establishments in orange county. The senior citizen who claims to be a specialist does not know anything about child psychology. She treats kids like shit. When we entered the premises, she called my 4 year old a customer. Perfect way to approach a child. I have left 3 voicemails so far regarding my daughter's test result. No one had got back to me while I am eager to find out more about the test result. Out of patience, I chatted with other parents in the class and is quite shocked to find out that many kids were told " not ready" for kindergarten. The statistic made me question the methodology of the test if so many kids are suggested to be unready for the kindergarten. My daughter is also a reserved kid around strangers. I would be more than happy to give the test benefit of the doubt if the company had return my phone calls. I am very disappointed about the service. read more

I have been a Preschool Director for over 25 years and have used their services for most of that time. I have found them to be extremely accurate. Sometimes parents don't want to hear what they have to say and seek out opinions which match their own. I have found that some many of the parents who did not take their advice often come back to me later and admit Chacey and Bruce's advice was correct. read more

Had my son tested at C&B as an entry requirement for kindergarten. They told me he was assessed and ready for kindergarten. He struggled through kindergarten. We though about repeating kindergarten but the school said he should be put in 1st grade. He struggled with 1st grade as well. We had some testing done through the school district and their results were a lot different from C&B. We started him at a different school and he ended up repeating the 1st grade. I don't think the assessment C&B uses accurately assesses kindergarten readiness. I wish I would have listen to my instinct and kept him in kindergarten another year and not put so much into the C&B assessment. read more

Highly suspect outdated theories and practice, the proctor is not fit to be around small children. The test is a baseless 20 minute test with extreme bias toward boys and the recommendations carry a lot of weight with the schools seeking their guidance. The reported results did not reflect my sons correct answers, there were inconsistencies in the final summary. No one will return my call, I have requested information regarding the results and the actual answer sheet written up on that day to compare with what my husband and I witnessed. Massive assumptions were made on social emotional abilities that could not have possibly been assessed by the questions asked without additional investigation. Do not expose your sons to this assessment as the recommendation more likely than not will be that you need to hold him back one year without considering the evidence of the potential detrimental outcomes of doing so. Chancy and Bruce assessed my son when he was in preschool for Kindergarten. He is currently in fifth grade. Yes this was several years ago, but they properly and successfully assessed him for kindergarten. They gave us recommendations for further testing in other area which he struggled in. We sought out their recommendations and in the years to come we have discovered his learning disability of dyslexia. Chancy and Bruce's testing was right on in recognizing his developmental struggles and their recommendations were appropriate and right on with his development. read more

While I understand and can appreciate the measures used for their assessment methods, there are much error variance not accounted for. First and foremost, the people appeared to be in a rush to get through the assessment with the kids bc the line was rather long. Also, seeing that they were rushing through, it made me question whether they made the concerted efforts to properly assess the kids. Truth of the matter, 25 mins to assess a child is flawed in my opinion. Another major error not accounted for is the kid's personality. After going through our son's evaluations, we realized that he masters the majority of skills he was tested on yet received scores far lower than his capabilities. For example, he was lower than average on gross motor skills when in fact this is one of his greatest strengths. However, he is quite shy when in a different environment and with people he does not know--especially when they are just rushing through, therefore he tends not to respond as he usually in does in his natural environment. We know our son and how incredibly active he is, it was apparent that the staff hired by this company are folks just looking to make each work day easier by not trying to help the kid become comfortable enough to demonstrate their true skills and abilities. Beyond that, at the parent meeting conducted to go over the evaluations, the staff members suggested that a bilingual family should defocus on speaking both languages in the household until the child has advanced to completely reading in English. Once this was suggested, I no longer took this co. seriously bc again, they have clearly not vetted the people they hired. For other parents out there, do not let this co. stress you out regarding your kids. You know your kids best and what's best for them. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. read more

My son was assessed by Chancy and Bruce as recommended by his preschool. I had my own assumptions prior to the testing and feedback from his preschool teacher and director. The assessment results were inline with what the rest of us were thinking. I also had him assessed through the public school's preschool learning center (which included 2 days of assessment with a special education teacher, school psychologist and observation at his preschool). What was very interesting is that both the Chancy and Bruce assessment and school's report found nearly identical results in all areas of learning and development. And both indicated at young developmental age. This information was vital in aiding me in my pursuit to get him enrolled in the district's transitional kindergarten class even though he did not meet the chronological age criteria. However, the biggest reason I give this business 5 stars is because of my interactions with Mrs. Bruce. She went above and beyond what would of ever been expected for a $50 assessment. We spoke several times regarding my son's assessment and she was a wealth of knowledge and an invaluable resource to me. I would without hesitation recommend this assessment for your child. Information is just that, but it's up to you what you do with it. In my case, having this information proved all the difference and is putting my child on the right track to start of his education. I am very grateful that we did this assessment and that I had the opportunity to speak with Mrs. Bruce. read more
