We ordered for delivery while staying in the hotel half of a block or so away. It's hard for me to write that and see it in words but we had taken the dogs out so many times there was just no way we were stepping foot outside of the hotel again. I grew up in NY so it's hard to impress me with pizza. I didn't have any expectations, especially for a late night slice but the quality (and i'm a bit embarrassed to say this) really blew me away. I was full from earlier (disclaimer: not my idea to order) so I expected to only have a few bites, you know, wet the whistle, but I ended up having a slice and a half and maybe two, memory is fuzzy. The cheese was hot and bubbling having just come half the block down the street and up the elevator. The crust was reallyyyy good and held up. There was literally zero sog whatsoever. The sauce was flavorful as well. I was not expecting anything close to this. We had a bunch of leftovers and even after being left out all night and most of the next day, they warmed up beautifully in the oven and was STILL incredible even as leftovers. I am shook. STILL NO SOG! I would eat the fuck out of this if I lived nearby. read more

I always wanted to try this place since I see a lot of people lining up to get a slice on a night out and it looked really good. Food: I had the chicken buffalo slice and I would say the crust is definitely one of the best in the city, since it is very thin and crunchy and had some flavor to it. However, the topping were such a flop as there is almost no tomato sauce or cheese and it is basically just ranch, buffalo sauce and chicken which was also not as flavor as you expect. Finally the slice was not as warm as it should be. Service: like any other pizza slice shop. So there is no input regarding that. Atmosphere: I like how they have a bench where to sit and enjoy the slice in a peaceful way while jaming to the songs playing in the background. read more

One star because cold pizza is never good. Plus, I paid $3.00 extra to get it delivered faster. Actually, the delivery guy was pretty fast, but I think something is wrong in the place; send out a cold pizza. Maybe that's why they gave so many extra garlic knots (which were hot). This is only the second time I have had Champion, and the first was last week from Times Square, and it also took forever and was cold. The Times Square Champion cold was better than cold from here. Clearly Champion is a slice shop, not really a place for deliveries of whole pies. One day when I'm nearby, I'll stop into one of their many locations; none are near me in Murray Hill/Kips Bay. I won't be trying a different Champion to see if they can do better, because they probably can't, and there are plenty of other distant pizza parlors that do care enough to make sure they deliver hot pizza to the customer. read more

I used to go to their outpost at Columbus Circle all the time. So I was excited when I saw this location on my errands. Went in, and immediately felt a depressed, amateur hour vibe in what I discovered to be an incredibly average, disappointing experience. I've had better slices at a 99-cent shop. The cheese tasted old, the sauce way too acidic and the crust was as limp as a 90-year old without viagra. Bottom line: Save your money and go down the block to the McDonald's. This is my favorite slice pizza in NYC. Though nearly every pizza option in lower Manhattan is good, Champion has a special place in my mind. I love the vibe of the store and it's storied history. Their ingredients just taste a little bit fresher to me than most slice pizza spots. They give you plenty of meat with each slice and their sauces actually have distinct flavors. I would recommend Champion Pizza over Prince Street Pizza. Both are very good but I think Champion has better pizza and the wait at Prince Street makes getting a slice a remarkable pain. There is a bench that can fit at most four people that's leaning against the door, but usually I just get slices and walk around eating the slice. I enjoyed the flavors of the pizza, with the gooeyness of the mozzarella and freshness of the basil. It was a very satisfying slice to end my night. I enjoyed this so much I had to drag my bf to bring a couple of slices to-go for our flight out of JFK. He's pretty picky with pizza and, surprisingly, approves of Champion. The dollar pizza on Essex has saved many lives after nights of inebriation. Though, I think it's $2 after 10pm now. I could have sworn I reviewed this already but hey. The crust is still slightly crisp, it comes out piping hot, cheese/sauce ratio good.
