Ah, good ol Champ Burger. I was introduced to this little gem by a coworker of mine, who has loved this place for as long as I can remember. He loves it so much, every Friday has become Burger Friday for us, and he goes every Friday and gets his usual. I've had their bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, onion, tomato, and pickles. I usually eat later than my coworker, so I'll have everything on the side and reheat it later. The burger is so good, that it's still a 5 star rating for it and I don't even eat it fresh. Nice big size, they don't hold back on the bacon, which of course is great. I've also had their chicken salad, which is really good too. No complaints, from me. Viva Burger Friday! read more

This is my updated review for Champ and this time around I tried something different than my usual order. I tried a Grilled Chicken sandwich with swiss cheese and I also bought a order of Chili Cheese fries. The Grilled Chicken sandwich was pretty good for me since I am on a chicken and fish diet but the chilli cheese fries were kind of bland its basically McDonald's style french fries with Wolf brand chilli. I think that I will order onion rings next time with my burger. Its always good customer service at this burger stand and if you are close by then give this place a visit. read more

It was my first time here, fast service, in & out in not even 10 minutes. Most burger places half ass the bacon, well Champs overflows your burger with bacon & it is DELICIOUS! If you haven't tried it, you should, I was struggling to finish the whole thing. I figure I should come downtown to try some joints in Houston more often. This is a walk up and order burger place. You walk up, look at the menu, then sit anywhere outside. I had a basic $8 meal deal, and the simple cheeseburger. The sandwich was good, not too raw with the meat, and I enjoyed the fries that came with it. I saw that they offer some onion rings in substitute for fries, but I will certainly have to try that the next time. I also enjoy all the condiments on how it ties together with the burger. The seating has plenty, even though it's outside in the heat. Parking can be a bit of a pain, since it's close to downtown. You may have to pay to park, but I would recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a nice little drive to a burger place. I try to do that whenever I am out and about in Houston. read more

This is the place cops, lawyers, truck drivers, downtowners and Cougars all come to get their burger fix at this East End oasis. It's interesting place to people watch. I definitely call this a classic hamburger stand. It's been here since the 60s. I've been eating here since the 90s and have become good friends with the owner and the staff. They even know my kids' names. They have real fried apple pies and excellent shakes (get the orange-it tastes like a Push-up Pop). My personal favorite and a Champ Burger specialty is the Steakburger. It's a like a chicken fried burger and it's delicious. I get it with their beer batter style onion rings and a large chocolate shake. This is not for the light hearted. They also do great breakfast tacos and sandwiches in the mornings which they serve with their homemade salsa. This is my favorite in town Burger joint. It doesn't take long to become a regular. Service is fast and mistake free. FYI: They're open from morning to late afternoon during the week only. And it is a burger stand -- so enjoy lunch in the great outdoors. read more

Oh good ol' Champs! Probably the best old school burger in the downtown area. Nothing fancy, just take your order at the window, sit on a bench outside, and enjoy....repeat if necessary! During lunch all walks of life stop by for some greasy goodness. Lawyers, oil tycoons, truck drivers, the quasi-homeless...you name it! When I worked downtown during college, this was my favorite place for lunch. The burgers and fries are amazing! That should go without saying from the rest of the reviews. The shakes are fantastic! This is the kind of place that I like for my burgers - a walk up window, with some picnic tables. Only open until 4:30 PM, M-F, they do a pretty good medium-thin griddled burger with solid fries. Ooze factor was very high the first time I went, but on one subsequent visit during the lunch rush my burger was a bit dry, so it's clear there is some variability in how you'll get your burger. They use a 1/3 lb. patty, so if you get extras like bacon you're almost certainly looking at a two handed burger. All the seating is outside, but they have a covered area, and most of the tables not in the covered area have large umbrellas. Honestly, the seating area is well presented and maintained, and adds a lot of charm. It's sort of a little oasis in the middle of the warehouse/industrial district on the east end of downtown. read more

Great, no nonsense burger. Decent sized patty (1/3 pound of ground chuck), fresh tomatoes, pickles, lettuce, mayo and mustard on the basic cheese burger. The bun was fluffy and solid. This is not a greasy, run down your arm burger. It's got great flavor though. Lunch special with burger, fries and a drink about $8. Good price. I subbed the o-rings for the fries. Wow! They were terrific! Not greasy, super crispy. Yummy. You can get bacon, double meat, jalapeno, chili, Swiss cheese and even ham as an add on to your regular ol' burger. We went with the basic on our first visit. They are open for breakfast at 7am (breakfast tacos and egg sammies) and close before dinner time. So this is a lunch place. Oh and they are closed Sat and Sun. Seems like everyone who works in the East End was there to pick up their call in order. But service went fast and we ordered and got our bag of burgers in less than 10 minutes. Chicken sammies, hot dogs, basic salads and shakes too. Parking all on the street. Nice patio to eat your grub if you don't take it with you. It's a bit of a drive for me from West Houston. But if I lived here I would eat here often. I once got an A on an 8:30 am Poli Sci presentation because I took the whole class breakfast tacos from this place. I am not saying that the tacos were the ONLY reason for my A, but they sure helped. At least all 30 members and the professor of my Women in Politics class had something extremely positive to say about the food. Their burgers speak for themselves. The bread is lightly toasted, the vegetables are fresh, the meat is good quality meat, and their fries are like the home made fries my grandma used to make me on the Saturdays when I visited as a child. The burgers are so good, that they have kept this place in business for at least 20 years. The service is still the same, and the prices haven't sky rocketed because of its popularity. It's interesting to see the mix of ppl eating here- from college students, to truck drivers to downtown execs, all bound by their fascination for good burgers... The shakes are really good, but have at your own risk. They can be addictive. Also... they close by 5 pm, so make it there for lunch or try to beat rush hour to pick up dinner. read more

Had my first visit here yesterday. I got a bacon and cheese Champ burger with fries and a Hershey's chocolate shake for $10 and some change. The burger was massive and delicious. If i hadn't have been ravenous i could have saved half of it for dinner. The bacon was actual thick cut bacon that I would love to eat for breakfast and there was plenty of it on the burger. The fries were fresh and lightly salted. There was extra salt in my bag which is very thoughtful and convenient. The Hershey's chocolate shake was divine! It tasted like it's namesake and was a godsend on a hot Houston summer day. Nothing disappointed. At 1:45pm and even with a line the wait for my food was not a long one. I had the privilege of enjoying one of Champ Burgers Bacon & Cheese Burgers on 10/17/2014. We were able to call ahead and place our order, which was good since there was 5 of us and we had to travel about 15 minutes to get to their restaurant. They say their normal burgers are 1/3 of a lb. I believe this to be the weight of the burger after cooking it, because they are HUGE homemade burgers. The beef tastes like a good grade and very tasty. The bacon was thick and not over cooked. I like my bacon a little rubbery and that is what they served. I ordered my burger with no tomatoes or onions, but the rest of the toppings were loaded on, (cheese, bacon, lettuce and pickles). There was also healthy portions of ketchup, mustard and mayo. I ordered a basket/combo. They only have one size for combos, which includes a big bag of fries and about a 32oz drink. The fries were slightly seasoned and thick cut. The overall meal was very filling and good. The price for my combo was $10.47, which is a few dollars more than your normal fast food place but definitely more than $3.00 better than something you would get at a fast food place. I will definitely be back since I rarely stay faithful to my diet. FYI...there is no indoor seating so get it to go or go on a nice day. There is ample outdoor seating. read more

This is my favorite mom n pop place to eat at in Houston. I used to come all the time when I was a kid. Prices have changed but the taste and service is still the same. Haven't been in over 2 years and when I finally got a chance to go and saw everything was literally 2$ more I was hurt however I love this place. I go and get the same thing every time!
