On Thanksgiving day, I placed an order for Chameli on Ubereats. It was meant to be my "holiday meal," as I am new to town and would not be dining with any family or friends. Sadly, what I received in my order was extremely disappointing and ensured that I will never be dining here again. First off, I should mention that when you order 1 of something, that's exactly what you get--1 of something. Whereas most restaurants give you two or three (let's say) samosas per order, Chameli literally gives you 1. That's not really a complaint, more of a precaution, as I am used to the latter and expected a bit more food. This especially rings true for the desserts, as I ordered one of each menu item and received what I would consider three morsel portions. Then again, given the overall experience with my order, perhaps I was just sent the scraps of what the kitchen had left, which would be cause for alarm in itself. I can't really say. But anyway, the main complaint I have is with the chicken korma I ordered as my entree. First off, it didn't even come with rice. I am a big fan of Indian food and my orders from such apps are littered with the proof (and some pudding). Never before have I ordered an entree that didn't come with rice or some sort of starch to soak up the sauce. Most grievously though is the fact that there was no chicken in my order. It was a portion of korma sauce filled with chicken bones. I kid you not when I say it was nothing more than the skeletal remains of an actual entree. I tried my hardest to scavenge meat from the bones, but all I could find was fat and gristle. Not exactly what I had envisioned for my Thanksgiving meal. Best damn Indian food in town. The cook/owner is actually from Bangladesh. So, the dishes got a different flavor then the traditional Indian or Pakistani food. The foods kinda have a mixed flavor from Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi dishes. Words cannot express it. It's worth the trip, even if you are not within the neighborhood. After one visit, 3 stars sounds about right. I went for the biryani since they claim they are a biryani place. It was a GIANT heaping plate of rice with chicken (many pieces still on the bone), minimal add ins like veggies, nuts, or fruit like I've had elsewhere, cilantro, and spices. Topped with a hard boiled egg. Also other places I've had it usually serve it spicier with a raita-type sauce to go with it to cool you down, but this one did not. It also wasn't spicy though, so I guess it didn't need it. I don't know what the most "authentic" recipes call for, but it sure was a crapload of food for $3.99. I ate probably 1/4 of it and took the rest for multiple future meals. I also noted Francesca's praise of the samosas, so I had a beef samosa (99 cents) and tried the two green sauces they have at the counter. It was SUPER good. The two sauces were supposed to be spicy, but either I'm getting used to spice, or they weren't really that spicy (my friend said they were though, so maybe I'm just building up a tolerance). I would definitely get one of those again. They also had curry dishes and veggie dishes, and several desserts. The desserts seemed a bit pricey to me at $2.50 a pop, but I would probably try the gulab jamun or the homemade kheer (at least that's what it looked like) next time. I should also mention that the place was plenty clean, it did smell like food but wasn't intolerable, and the lady who took my order was pretty helpful. I asked for a to go menu so I could see if any of the menu items had descriptions (I didn't know what a lot of the stuff on the menu was), and she took the time to hand write a short description next to everything I was unfamiliar with! This is a nice little spot for authentic Bangladeshi food. The Biryani, which they claim they are famous for, is ok, but not great. You do get a lot of it though, so can't complain. As others have outlined, the meat dishes here come with a lot of bone in them. The only exception to this is the butter chicken dish, which is top notch! The Korma and Karai (both goat and chicken) are very flavorful and have just the right amount of spice. Unfortunately, on two occasions, I got different temperatures in my food, leading me to believe that some of it is just leftovers heated up in the microwave. Well... Two stars is supposed to be "I've experienced better"... but since I was going on a limb and trying something new... I can't say I've ever had Biryani before. And after this experience... They serve them on-the-bone, so you have to be a little careful, but the flavor is out of this world. The Chicken Karai and Chicken Korma are both delicious. Once I tried the Beef Biryani and it was a delightful surprise. They know how to cook meat here! Maybe cooking on-the-bone gives it that added flavor. I could not find Chilli Pepper Biryani House, so my friend and I went here. I love Indian food and I've been craving some flavor and spices for a while. I'm very glad we went to Chameli. We had 2 perfectly spicy vegetable samosas and we each got an order of chicken biryani. The flavors were excellent! My order was heaped with rice, topped with half of a hard-boiled egg, and it had no fewer than 4 big pieces of chicken (still on the bone) hidden under the rice. Went at 2:15 am to get food from one of the only Indian/paki/bangla restaurant open. This late at night they only serve meat over rice, I had gotten chickpea over rice and boneless chicken biryani. I am so impressed the portions were great, and they were not stingy with the meat AT ALL. And on top of that the food tastes SO DELICIOUS AND SPICY. Theres a lot to choose from here. The hardest part is knowing that everything is wonderful here! I went in and ordered a lot of stuff. Right off the bat, I knew I wanted their chicken pastries. Based on the price and the pictures, I also went for the chameli chicken and fish cutlet. The chicken chameli is like their spin on chicken nuggets, but on a skewer. It was delicious! It had just the right amount of chicken , spice, and grease, wrapped around a good amount of breading. The fish cutlet was like an indian crab cake, minus the crab. I wasnt sure how it would turn out, but I really enjoyed it. The chciken pastry had a wonderful crust and flakiness to it. My only complaint was it wasnt super fresh, which I knew based on the somewhat warm innards. But based on my experience, I wasnt going to have them microwave it. My friends and I each ordered an entree and shared it among ourselves. I went for the lamb korma, which I did enjoy, but I think I enjoyed my friends butter chicken and chicken karai. The butter chicken was what I expected, but the chicken karai was something else. The sauce it was braised in was so damn good. I could have easily licked the bowl clean on that one. The naan bread here is legit. The fact that it came out fresh made me even happier! If you do get naan, order the garlic butter naan and dont look back. That stuff was so good!! It was pretty oily but it was delicious as eating a piece of pizza. We got rice, but I didnt even have room to try it. Also, they have solid samosas. Honestly, you cant go wrong here. My parents took me here a few years back and I recently visited again last week. Was prompted by the great experience that I had here. Environment: Nice location with very clean tables and chairs. Unlike most sit down restaurants, the water here is self-serve. There's a table in the front that has pitchers of cold water and a few mugs and cups. The cashier on the front was very friendly when taking our order and kept stopping to tell us that the food would be "X more minutes". It was great knowing that he didn't forget about us and the food was well on its way. Food: In my most recent visit, I ordered 2 boxes of biryani (chicken and beef) and 3 samosas. I thought there was a typo on the menu because the chicken was only $3.99 for an entire box. The rice is long-grained and packs such a huge flavor punch. My family is Malaysian and we feel that Chameli does a great job of balancing out the spice that comes from the southeastern Asia region. Portion sizes are generous and 1 box can easily feed 2 hungry people. However, I don't recommend the samosas here. My boyfriend and I usually go to Samosa Hut in Iriving, but we ventured out and tried the ones here. They were good, but the middle of the samosas were cold. Yikes. The flavor was good, but not the best that we've had. I would definitely skip on the samosas and stick to the biryani and curry. Good prices for large portion sizes. Very flavorful food. God, that rice was so aromatic and the shrimp curry was a little too spicy for me to eat all of it but flavorful enough that I did try. The mango lassi was sweet, smooth and tangy. She recommended the Beef Curry Rizala $5.99. I liked it. Good and flavorful. Perfect for a cold winters day (even though it was over 100 degrees out). Tried both the Samosa and the Potato Cutlet as a side dish. Both were good, I preferred the potato cutlet. Crispy outside, creamy herb spiced potato inside. Naan was OK. Crisp on the outside. They provided two sauces to try. One was a thin tamarind sauce with a little spice, but the one I really liked was a jalapeno/cucumber/yogurt . I want the recipe! I've always heard criticism about this place, but personally I've never had any reason to complain. I've been to Chameli about 4 times and every time, the biriyani was good. I've lived in Hyderabad and I know how good biriyani tastes for real, and Chameli makes it pretty well. Not authentic, but it is good. It is true that they don't serve it with Raita, but then the restaurant is kinda self service and they have green chutney and raita on the counter in squeezy bottles and I find that acceptable enough. Their serving portions are very generous and they give you a lot of meat with the biriyani so that's always a good experience. I think their best dish is biriyani, and I recommend this place. For the price you pay for the food, it is well worth it. read more
