I really didn't expect the food to actually be good because I just saw the cafe as an extension of a bookstore, but I was pleasantly surprised! The bagel was hot and really delivered on the jalapeño and cheese. And the chai latte had really good flavor. There was a good amount of seats, with good wifi, and I did see some outlets! The bookstore itself is also really nice. It's pretty organized but also feels kind of chaotic in the best way. And it's way bigger than I thought. I recently visited this bookstore during my visit to Jacksonville. This location I believe is located in the downtown area. I didn't see any parking lots, but there are paid street parking. Walking in, you can either go straight into the bookstore or turn left to go to the cafe. I didn't try any of their food or drinks, but the cafe had plenty of table/seats to relax in. The bookstore portion of it consists of 2 floors. You can find a map of the store at the cashier table. There are rows and rows of books in each floor, but they are surprisingly organized by genre and authors. They also sell both new and used books, which is great for those who are trying to save some money or trying to find some classic books. The staff were very friendly and helpful. read more

A perfect place I would imagine on most days. When you need a change of pace from the original Chamblin's, go here and explore the upstairs. Nice, simple cafe with a really good bookstore. Well-organized and kinda library-ish, but with an oddly placed bookshelf here and there. I have only been once, and because I'm not local when we're in the area we're typically headed to the main store because it's even better. Some of the sections they have are unique to Chamblin's simply because other bookstores don't have enough books within that category to actually create one! This place has the best lattes around, their menu is actually pretty extensive when it comes down to drinks. They have coffees, lattes, teas, Italian sodas, almost anything you can think of for a morning pick-me-up. Their pralines brownies and cookies are to die for, perfectly sweet and melt in your mouth. If you haven't I'd recommend you give their bagels and breakfast or lunch menu a try - it always looks delicious. The service is fast and everyone is polite. There's no pressure and they're quite patient. The cutest couch and seating is by the entrance for when you're waiting. Not to mention all the books just a side step away to peruse! Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options exist, and small cafe tables are plentiful. You can also sit outside, and with the location being right at Hemming Plaza, there is always something to watch if you're not buried in a book. On this morning, I saw a local politician meeting and making calls, as well as a local developer having a quick meeting about a space. It feels like that kind of spot, where people of all walks can gather. Personally, I only ordered a chai latte, but it was hot and good. I do wish that there were non-disposable mug options, which would be good for a more green friendly business. Parking options are tough during the week, and WiFi would be nice, but for a downtown bookstore, neither are unexpected. read more

If you are into dreamy used book stores, Chamblins Uptown fits the bill. If you aren't, your loss. Let's start with food because I struggle to think straight when I'm hungry. The menu is simple, I went for the Big Bang bagel which is your choice of bagel, cheddar cheese, and a ton of veggies including sprouts, one of my favorites. I have to give these ladies props, it was huge and all toppings remained in tack. Most impressive. My vegan friend, who clearly is also in love with this place, ordered the Sexy Grits and bagel with hummus. Not your style? They have so many vegan choices including a daily special and soups! The coffee bar is always fully stoked, fresh, and hot. Fuel for the hours you could spend in the bookstore when you are done eating. Moving on, the store. There are two plans of attack. One, you can wander aimlessly, I highly recommend this approach your first time. Two, ask. Stop at the counter. Be friendly, ask for a section, author, something. Last but not least, the ask for a brief explanation of pricing, it is easy but you will find yourself with a stack of books and no idena how much money you are spending. I'm a used book store aficionado, so had to check this place out while in town! Glad we did. Two floors of top to bottom shelves of new and used books, anything and everything you could think of, any author, genre, new prints, collectible prints, dvds, tapes, cds... There's also a cafe at the exit to eat and drink when you're done! It took me until I was on the second floor to finally notice a price sheet taped to a table top in one of the seating areas, and this would be my only complaint is that some of the older used books that you would expect to be cheap are actually almost full price. We were recently here for a book reading and signing. It's such a lovely book store. At the front near the cafe, they have plenty of tables and chairs, which is where the reading was. We came with the new book the author was reading, but we were able to pick a few of his other books to have him sign. Also because we love this author and we do want to read the other books in the series. They have both new and used books. One of the books we purchased was new and the other two were used (both in excellent condition). The two ladies working at the counter were so friendly and extremely helpful. They just have tons and tons of books. They seem to be much more organized than the Chamblin's on the Westside. They are located downtown. Keep in mind there is only metered parking, so bring quarters. However, meter parking in free after 6pm and on the weekends in the City of Jax. read more

Millions of pages full of life at one's fingertips sure as hell enlightens my outlook. Sure, you'll find Bukowski's classic titles early on, but then you stumble upon Arnold Schwarzenegger's autobiography and a self-help book focusing on firearm maintenance. FTW My point? I was volunteering all afternoon at the OneSpark HQ and after having to refill the meter on my parked car a couple times, it was due time to get something for lunch. I had been hearing about Uptown's fantastic spread for awhile, so that's where I headed after moving my car closer to the library. I loved how immediately at home that I felt upon walking in. I am a huge fan of the Bookmine and I seriously think that a cafe is definitely what is missing over there (after being at this location). I was planning on coming back to browse the bookstore after volunteering, but the bookstore side is closed on Mondays. The cafe offers food for everyone. They do have vegan choices, but they also have meat choices. No one is left out here. While I love my greens and salads, I've tried giving up meat and it never worked for me so I got a bit of both worlds. I ordered the BLT wrap with mustard, instead of mayo, and a half of the house salad to go. I'm not sure what they put in their house vinegarette, but it was divine! Two things that I loved: 1. The wrap was separated into two halves for me and wrapped separately so that if I wanted to save the other for later, I could. 2. The half of a house salad container was at least 4" deep and at least 6" across. It was huge, and inexpensive, for only a "half" salad compared to the likes of Panera. I wish that I could have sat there to eat and enjoyed the atmosphere. In any case, I'm hooked and I'll be back to eat and shop soon. read more

Chamblin's Uptown is much like the original Chamblins in Ortega, but smaller and with a teeny cafe squeezed in. Located just half a block from Hemming Park, it is literally in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville. Anytime we are in the area, we will pop in and check it out since it's rather addictive. Like the original, the book stacks are high and maze-like, but because of it's size, there is little chance of getting lost in this labyrinth. LOL Better chance of someone hearing your cries for help too, if you actually choose to be rescued. There is a small cafe wrapped around the front with drinks and food. I have had plenty of coffee, tea and hot chocolate but other than a cheese plate a while back, haven't eaten here. Chamblin's has almost everything. After a red eye flight from Las Vegas, my companion and I decided to stop for coffee. He doesn't drink coffee... LOL. I ordered a white chocolate mocha, hot, he thought that sounded good so he ordered the same, iced. His was gone in less than two minutes! He stated that he could drink one of this every day for the rest of his life! We came back the next day for more (walked eight block for it, in fact!) We both got the iced mochas and split an everything bagel. OMG BEST BAGEL I HAVE EVER HAD! Loved the quotes and pics on the tables too :) You need to try this place! Staying downtown on business and wanted to find somewhere to go since the Landing is gone. Heard about this place and was pleasantly surprised. Two levels of used books, some cds, dvds and tapes great place to kill some time and the lady at the counter was helpful. There is a cafe downstairs that has voter registration too. Really cool spot. I didn't have that much time but I wound up spending an hour and a half and came out with 4 books and some music for $20. Don't even think I saw half the place but I'll be back. From the outside it looks small, but they have 2 levels inside with an elevator, or you can choose the stairs if you want to get a little exercise. Why 4 stars? Because of nice people. --- --- --- As I've been writing a lot lately - my go-to coffee order is super boring nowadays: double-shot of espresso, black. This means that there's not a lot of variance between coffee shops, because the taste of an espresso shot is mainly going to depend on the type of bean, rather than something special that the barista does. But I wanted to give Chamblin's a shoutout for the aforementioned barista, who was super friendly and genuinely seemed to be enjoying herself. Our brief interaction was cheery enough to even put me in a better mood. Aside from that, if I had been looking for a more robust selection of coffee, I could have found it here. Matt C even ordered a cortado, which I didn't see listed on the menu, but the barista happily obliged his request. She also hooked us up with the WiFi password: exoticshrub482 - which is obviously the best WiFi password ever. The only negative is that we were in an area with a pretty sizeable homeless population and a few of them made their way into the shop, which didn't do wonders for the smell around us, but we were in and out quick enough that it didn't bother us too much. read more
