    three glasses of cid

LOVE this place. Stopped on a visit to Halifax recently. Ciders are my favorite in the States and this place did not disappoint. I was hesitant to order because most of their ciders were dry, but our server steered me toward Lush, and it was really good. The fried chicken though? I'd fly back just for that! No joke!

I've always been a cider fan, so upon the recent opening of Chain Yard Cider in the former Fred space on Agricola and North, I was excited to try this unique (at least in Halifax) business. Meeting up with a friend on a Saturday evening, the brightly-coloured cidery was pretty well full up, with all the tables occupied, although I was able to snag a couple seats at the bar. Decor is pretty minimal, with the yellow and blue walls taking prominence, and I enjoyed their "Drink more apples" sign. Their tiny kitchen is shoehorned in one corner, while their cider production facility and merch counter takes up a good chunk of the other end of the building. Posters stapled to a plywood panel above their taps list the several ciders (house brand and guest), and local beers available on draught. There's kombucha and ginger beer if you're not imbibing, but still want to be cool. I had to go with one of the in-house varieties to start, and it was an easy choice when I saw that they had a hopped cider. Dry, but not too dry, and with just a hint of floral hops, I'd call it a gateway drink for beer, but it would be hard to stop drinking this fantastic cider. Being a cynic and a fan of food lends itself to becoming jaded with menus that tend to blur together as trends come and go, or simply aren't very creative. So when I want to eat nearly everything on a menu, it's a rare event indeed, but Unchained Kitchen had me wishing I had more of an appetite. A southern/eastern seaboard theme definitely runs through the menu, with the likes of Old Bay fries,sa soft shell clam bake, and a fried oyster po'boy singing a delicious siren song. Alas, a hefty mid-afternoon meal at home was weighing on my appetite, so we just ordered the Old Bay fries and deep fried snails. Our bowls of deep fried fare were soon in front of us, accompanied by the flights of ciders we got to further sample their apple-based wares. The fries had the signature peppery and earthy flavour of Maryland's favourite seasoning, and were wonderfully crisp. Paired with the dill pickle aioli, you're gonna want a couple orders of these.  These fries are top contenders with the likes of Stillwell and Ace.   The fried snails were panko crusted for a light and crunchy coating that held the moist and tender molluscs inside. The Russian aioli was tasty, but I enjoyed the snails on their own.  Service was friendly and efficient.  The momentum of the food and drink scene in the north end keeps chugging along like a bearded, plaid-wearing train, and I'll gladly tag along for the ride with food and drink this good.

    Flight of ciders x2

In Halifax for a conference and was recommended to visit the Chain Yard if I liked ciders (I don't, but my friend does). The inside is very funky and fun, with a large bar and some table seating. Our server was friendly and took the time to explain everything to us in detail. We each ordered the flight of ciders - 4 x 4oz ciders of your choice (on tap) for only $10! I'm not a regular cider drinker, so I was overwhelmed by the extensive menu, but our server was amazing in recommending her favourites, as well as what she thinks we'd like. I ended up going for the Foundation, Hot Mess, Cherry, and Pommies. My friend ordered four different ciders so that we can try a wider variety. Also ordered some seasoned fries with dill pickle aioli to share. The ciders were AMAZING. Perfect tasting sizes, and each one so full of flavour. My friend absolutely adored the Hot Mess, and ended up ordering a full glass after our flights. The fries were well seasoned and were absolutely delicious with the aioli. My bill for the visit was $14 for the flight and half the fries. Very reasonable for what you're getting! They also sell the adorable tasting glasses for $5 each (my friend purchased a couple as souvenirs - they're engraved with the Chain Yard's logo!) Overall, a fantastic experience. The atmosphere, service, food, drinks, everything was top notch. 5 stars!!!

Always a favourite! Shared the fried chicken, and new fall tempura lobster. Really nice presentation but the tempura got a little soggy from the etouffée. This is very filling, would be nice to have less etouffée & a little side salad. All in all though, Flavours were amazing as always. I got some extra buttermilk ranch on the side for dipping which was . Can't wait to try the entire menu

Great space - so much potential! There are a variety of ciders on tap brewed on site, plus a selection of guest ciders. A few local craft beer guest taps, local soda pop choices, and a small wine selection round out the beverage offerings. Try an adorable flight of 4 different ciders for $10.50 to decide what you'd like a bigger glass of! Nice selection of small plates and bar bites for sharing, as well as a burger and po'boy choices if you're hungry. Staff were attentive and pleasant. We sat at the high wooden bar which is nice and wide with plenty of space to see what's going on. Several high tables with tall chairs have a view of North street, while a bench along the back while with smaller tables and a couple of big group tables in the wide open floor space offer plenty of seating options. You can bring growlers from other breweries (preferably clean) and staff will re-fill with your choice of cider, or buy a large glass cider bottle to get fill and bring home. They also have several of the varietals in cans on site to buy. These have been so popular in NSLC I had yet to see them for sale! You can also peek in at the brewing operation through a side door if you're curious about the inner workings. We tried the 5 Chair Yard ciders on tap plus the chocolate BBQ pork ribs with grilled peach hash and shrimp 3 bean salad - totally yum! Looking forward to trying the changing menu and seeing what kind of events they start to host here! A welcome addition to the neighbourhood.

We stopped here on a food tour of Halifax. It was during the day, so not too busy. Very cool vibe. If I lived in Halifax I would be a regular, and I don't even like cider that much...but their food is outstanding! We were able to try the Coconut Curry Spice Krispies, which were phenomenal!!! We also had the fried chicken with a buffalo sauce, also very good.

My wife and I checked out this relatively new addition to our North End neighbourhood. First off, the atmosphere and seating were great. It is an open space with outdoor seating options. We had an appetizer (curry rice crisps) which tasted wonderful but we both agreed was more of a dessert, it was very sweet. I had the burger and fries. The fries were great, the burger was disappointing. The apple bacon slaw was very mushy, and didn't taste like apple or bacon. I was hoping for a fresh crisp bite of apple and bacon, that didn't arrive. The burger itself wasn't overly flavourful. Now my wife got the jambalaya and it was great. Spicy, the shrimp was good and she was happy. I definitely will be back to try two other items I saw on the menu and will update as appropriate. All in all a nice spot that I am sure I will be back too.

First tried here on an overcast Sunday evening in July around 7pm? My friend and I took two seats at the bar. The place wasn't busy, but not dead either. I didn't count the seating capacity but there are a few large tables for groups, several small tables, and wrap around chairs at the large wooden bar. Modern, cool, fun atmosphere with some apple themed decor (eg a large cartoon mural), colorful walls, bare concrete floor, merchandise section to buy clothing/glasses/canned cider when you first walk in, and a glass wall to the right to see the actual cidery in action. Very friendly staff. The cider flight sampler is very cute, served with four small glasses seated on a spiral black rack. I tasted the Yard Berry and the Hops, and enjoyed both a lot, and I'm normally not a lover of ciders that much. Unfortunately, I don't see a menu on their website or FB page. To snack, we tried these coconut curry 'spice krispies' which weren't what I was expecting at all, but I liked them a lot. An almost brittle-like item, served as broken large pieces in a bowl, made with sunflower seeds and very sweet with lots of flavor ($6). Then we split the UK cheese & charcuterie board (selection of local cheese and meats from Ratinaud Blue Harbour & Ciro. $22). Small tin of olives and an 'apple bacon chow' came with the platter. Twelve slices of toasted white baguette were small, but they did the trick. I'd put a piece of meat & different cheese and the slaw on each one and made for some very good flavor pairings. Came back for lunch on an overcast Tuesday to try the bigger dishes and introduce the place to another friend. He tried the Cheesy Brisket Burger with the apple bacon chow & frites ($13)and said the burger was very good, definitely better than average. I opted for the Fried chicken Po Boy ($13) and glad it didn't come with a side because it is quite big and I couldn't finish it. A bit difficult to eat and messy, because it's so big, but had great flavor with a homemade hot sauce drizzle, fresh dill, another homemade ranch sauce maybe?, and some kind of slaw. Third visit: an overcast Wednesday for lunch in September. The place was quite empty again. I tried the Handmade Gnocchi with braised brisket & cremini ($17) which was good but didn't blow me away with flavor. I found it to be more of a stew, but not bad. My friend had the same burger as last time because burgers are his thing. Service friendly again. Most recent visit for lunch the place was empty and I enjoyed the Linguine Aglio e Olio (sauteed shrimp & olive gremolata $17), taking half in a doggie bag b/c it was a good sized portion, decent flavor. I look forward to going back here to eat again soon, and drink, or both. :)

The beautiful and delicious cidery has been open for just about a week. We came here as our first stop of our beer bus tour (highly recommended). We tried a bunch of different ciders and they were all delicious. Ranging from dry to sweet. The food was also really good. The must try food is the fries chicken - wow!!!!!

We didn't really order their drinks, so can't make comments on it. The environment is cozy and bright as a good place for friends to hang out. the service is greate, but the fried chicken is a little bit salty. the scallop sandwich is very very good though, nice and fresh!

There are small plates on offer with seasonal ingredients, and I look forward to returning to try all of them. They also have a variety of cans and bottles of beer and cider, including a number you can take with you as singles or in a four-pack for the road. The decor at Sourwood is full of natural textures, and comfortable, with plenty of seating at the bar as well as along benches and wooden tables. The open garage door for summer brings in tons of fresh air which is just delightful. I was lucky enough to have a taste of their Cider. It was excellent - super flavorful and crisp. I would have taken some with me but it wasn't all ready yet. They also grown their own lavender and have different lavender products. Aside from a great product, it was very interesting to hear the family's story. The farm has been in the family for a long time although the building and brewery is much newer. We ended up staying for quite a long time hanging out with Alan, Brenda and Campbell.
