Good room. Good tea. Good people. Just way too damn hot inside. I came in looking for a gift and the person working was genuinely helpful: patient, knowledgeable and willing to walk me through options without making me feel like an idiot. That matters, especially in a place where the menu can feel a little ceremonial if you don't already know what you're looking for. The only knock is that the room needed air. Badly. Tea is supposed to slow you down, not make you feel like you're quietly melting while choosing a gift. There was also a little too much nudging toward flavors I had already said I wasn't interested in, but nothing offensive. More enthusiastic than annoying. Feels like a cross between a warehouse and a tea room inside to me, with a high wooden ceiling and distant shelves stocked with tea and tea pots to sell. Service is good, the tea is very affordable and brewed very strong in somewhat large, absurd yet cute ceramic elephant shaped tea pots, complete with special sponge attachments to absorb drips. Why they can't use a teapot design that doesn't drip as much to start with is probably a conversation for another day - one I didn't bother to have... Given how affordable it is, you can't expect it to compare with high end tea rooms like you'll find in London, and that's totally okay. read more

My husband and I received a Gift Card for Chado Tea Room for Christmas and decided to finally redeem it in July. Best Gift Card ever. We had a wonderful afternoon. It was my husband's first time having High Noon Tea. He was very impressed with the tea room and staff. The customer service was great. We chose the "Chado in Wonderland" afternoon tea which was great. It included an iced tea drink, salad, our own pot of tea and delectable bites!! The room is lovely and is located in Old Town Torrance. We went through the week so parking was not an issue. This area gets pretty busy on the weekend so you might have to circle around for street parking as there is no parking lot available. Believe me it's worth the parking challenge. Chado has a lot of different teas to choose from. You can purchase teas and other nice items after your lovely experience. We also received a tea cup & saucer as a gift with our package which was a plus. If you are looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion or just want to treat yourself, Chado is the place to be. I highly recommend this tea room and can't wait to go back. I've been to the Hollywood location, and this location is huuuuge but the interior leaves room for improvement. It's cute but just not as elevated as other tea time spots especially for the price of the more expensive tea time sets like the birthday one. Such a cute place to have a tea party with your friends and family. We celebrated a girlfriend's birthday and it ambiance was a good experience. We did the Chado Afternoon Tea Service and were able to order our own pots of tea to share. I got to try 6 different types and the 2 that stood out to me were White Champagne Raspberry and Irish Breakfast. The food is on the lighter side, but after drinking so much tea we were stuffed. My daughter and I enjoyed afternoon tea at this tea room, and it was absolutely lovely. From the outside, you wouldn't expect it to be so spacious inside, but once you walk in, it's beautiful and inviting. The interior is decorated with an assortment of different teacups, there's a charming water fountain in the center, and another on the right side as you enter. They offer both small and large tables to accommodate different party sizes. Our favorite sandwich--the one my daughter and I loved the most--was the salmon and egg sandwich. I feel like they've gone downhill. The food doesn't taste exceptional. When you're paying a grip for parts of sandwiches and uninspired treats possibly stale it takes the afternoon tea magic away. I've been going to Chado in downtown and South Bay for a decade but sadly I can't spend anymore on their inflated menu prices with smaller menu offerings and meh food. The service isn't great either. Not bad. Just not great. I especially don't like walking in and being confused about where to stand. At door? Go to the counter? Seat myself? We ran into this spot while walking around the antique fair. It's a very large space with plenty of seating. The walls are lined with tea and teaware. It was decorated for. Christmas which was extra special. Our servers were friendly and quick to serve. We decided to settle on their high tea service. I loved the option to share since we were in between meals. This is the few tea rooms in South Bay and I quite enjoy it! I've been here about 3 times over the past year. Although it is a tea room, it has the industrial vibes of the Torrance area, which I like because it represents Torrance/El Segundo the tomato soup here can will have my heart and soul, it's one of my favorites. For afternoon tea they have the four half sandwiches. All of which are good, but the chicken one is my #1. The scones are pretty average, and the jam is delicious. If you do the "champagne" tea it is been refreshing. I don't usually get to the third tier because I end up eating the chocolates they also bring you in addition to the tea service treats and those are worth it! If I could give a zero star I would. From the start you do not feel welcomed. It was 70% empty but, they act like it's booked for a year when booking. We are seated and left alone for 10min without a server to ask if you would like any water while you look through the menu. (No one explained the menu and that you choose certain items) because when seat the younger man just walked away from us. The older gentleman poured our tea and that was the END of any service. My soup was lukewarm my best friend soup was scalding hot. My tea was like warm. My friends was a tiny bit warmer. Which didn't allow the tea leaves to seep correctly and so it was watery tasting until the very end of our meal 45min later. We had the themed Halloween tower. Everything was dry or stale. Cold or soggy.... The. The fly... the entire meal... the fly. The sandwiches were slopped together compared to everyone else's around us that has precision cut stake sandwiches. They were toasted and soggy cold bread. There was a dry crust on the stale cupcake, then the worst part. FLYIES!!!! Landing on my salmon. Landing on my friend fruit and one of her items. I'm so sad... we rarely get out together. We have been looking forward to this for a year. Then the gift they give is an awful cup from a business or something.... It was dusty and had residue on the front and filth inside.... Literal drops of dry old tea. I was so insulted by this item. I would have rather not have been given it at all that to be given some odd cup for disabilities with food and old tea and dust on it. I'm truly sad over this whole experience that we were supposed to be there for two hours and asked for the check at 40min in the man that sat us too 15min to bring the check. I love chado! Come here mainly for birthday celebrations. The staff are always so attentive and friendly. Their selection of teas is super impressive and ive loved each one ive tried. We held a small family gathering of 10 at Chado for my daughter's 16th birthday and we had a really great time. The ambiance is really nice and super cute in a really large open, almost warehouse kind of space, with tall open beamed ceilings and walls lined with a variety of teacups and saucers as well as a little "photobooth" area where you can sit, try on big hats and take selfies. My daughter loved that. We splurged for the $59/person "Birthday Afternoon Tea" since it was our daughter's "Sweet 16" and it was amazing with an obscene amount of food and drinks which were all delicious. We had a wine inspired tea, delicious chocolates, a variety of teas and a giant 3-tiered tower of tea sandwiches with scones and desserts (1 tier per each 2 people). We had so much food leftover! And of course, we took it home! My favorite sandwiches were the smoked salmon, smoked chicken & cranberry, the olive tapenade and the pesto caprese. The starter of tomato soup was delicious, too. Desserts were amazing as was the super rich slice of chocolate cake they brought out for my daughter. The only reason for the reduction of 1 star was the slow service at the beginning of the event. Once the tea and food started coming out, they were totally on it but we did have to wait a bit of an uncomfortable amount of time to be served in the beginning and we were hungry. One other very small gripe was that they didn't update the chalkboard near our table to wish our daughter a happy birthday (it had the name of the last birthday girl written on it). I still would highly recommend this unique place (and I'm a dude!). I am glad we did the big "Birthday Afternoon Tea" because it was quite an "event" and my daughter felt very special. I got the regular tea service with the chado salad. Salad was basic, but did taste good but not worth the extra 6 dollars. Macaroon was stale and disgusting. Madeline was store bought. I know cause it tastes exactly like the one I purchased from Costco. Scone (blueberry) this seemed made in house or atleast baked fresh and it did have a good flavor. It came with a clotted cream (i don't think it was though, a little more whipped cream like but good) and an orange jam (tasty). The sandwiches they made were mostly good. They had a tea egg, a chicken salad, cucumber and lox. Two complaints - the scallions on the cucumber sandwich was unnecessary, the lox seemed a little too dry. Since this was the second time I've been here, I would not go for the afternoon tea. I would go for just the tea and maybe a scones. They offer the largest assortment of teas from around the world that you can have served hot or cold. Great ambiance with over 200 teas on the shelves. It's been a while since I've been here, so I guess this is an update and some things have changed but I did visit during the holidays. Chado is a tea lovers paradise located in old Downtown Torrance on El Prado and Sartori Avenue. Parking is street only and not metered. I came here on a whim from someone else's suggestion. The place was decorated for the holidays and the service was polite and accomodating, The decor was homey and comfortable and a place you can come to celebrate a milestone or a special occasion. That said prices have gone up significantly and if you intend to share, be warned there is a $14.99 charge for splitting a tea service. That being said, if your appetite isn't large, I highly suggest you pick a sandwich or a salad instead of a tea service. Although getting more than one item here will likely equal 1 tea service item, so take your pick. Summary: I would come here for a special occasion, but not as a weekly thing as that can get pricey. If you're a tea lover, you'll love this place. They do have other locations all over LA and Orange County, so pick a favorite as they are all decorated differently any offer you a different menu item. Happy eating!! read more

My sorority had an event hosted here and I absolutely loved it. The staff were so accommodating, quick, and extremely kind. They made sure to ensure we had a great time and kept our tea cups full! The inside is beautiful and very regal. My favorite tea was the one that came out in the clear tea decanter, I believe it was called a blooming tea. The flower is steeped in the water and literally blooms as it is steeped. It was absolutely delicious and naturally sweet. It tasted like honey and rose and lavender. They also had another tea that tasted fruity like berries, very good as well. The food spread was also delicious. My favorite was the scone with cream sauce and jam and the smoked salmon toast. I suppose you get what you pay for, and $35 doesn't buy much these days. The elephant teapots are adorable, but my teacup had little chips around the rim. I understand that's what happens when things are reused, but it's not a great start. Most of the sandwiches are alright, chicken salad with cranberry is my fave. Cucumber is a bit bland, and the green onions are confined to one cream-cheesy end so you either start or finish with a very abrasive bite. There should be an award for the egg salad - I've never had on this bad. Zero seasoning, tasteless mush, very sulfuric aftertaste. Our blueberry scones tasted a little old, and mine had green dots on the bottom, which looked like mold. They assured me that the flour can turn that color when baked, but the replacement apricot scone tasted significantly more fresh and was delicious. Macarons are fine, but the butter cookies tasted a little stale. We ate at 11 AM on a Friday, right when they open so I wonder our food wasn't made that morning. My tea was passion fruit oolong, which was perfect blend of tea and fruit, I enjoyed it a lot, and it didn't seem to have too much caffeine, which I'm sensitive to. Price: we got 3 afternoon tea service, which cost $28.95 each and the summer apple salad cost $16.95, which I think are reasonable prices for the food and service Ambiance: high ceiling and spacious inside, walls are filled with tea jars and various teaware, which were a delight to look at. However, all the other decorations looked kinda cheap and not very cute, like they tried to make it elegant and high tea, but failed in doing so. Personally, I think they need to take out the messy designs and just fill the place up with more realistic flowers in one or two color schemes, and maybe white tablecloths. Unfortunately, it didn't take long to realize that the room was also unbearably noisy. We gave up on having any sort of conversation and waited for the food/tea service, which was decent for the price but not memorable. This place had some glowing reviews for the tea and being that I am on Spring break I decided to treat my daughters to an afternoon tea without the glitz of some other afternoon tea locations- not to mention they have kid friendly sandwiches and teas. I was really hoping to have a great experience here and I was, the tea was great! I had the butterscotch tea and my kids had the organic herbal tea which they really enjoyed. The food is where it became rocky. I was sharing my tier with my husband when he reached for the salmon toast and he saw a long hair. I immediately got our waiter and he was on it, took it to the back, he brought us out a new order of the salmon. I decided to have the other piece on the top tier thinking it wasn't affected...which was a mistake. I took a look at my piece, no hair. I took a bite and the hair was under the salmon! I had a reservation for 4:30 pm, when I arrived I just told the waiter that I was in for a party of 2 and was promptly seated! We ordered the celebration tea, which comes with three tiers-- scones, dessert, and sandwiches, accompanied with a platter of chocolates, an iced tea, and a soup or salad. I ordered the shangri-LA tea and my bf ordered the silver needle tea, which were both delicious and came out piping hot in the tea pot. The portions are more than enough food to get you full, and the waiter even provided extra clotted cream for us when he saw we were running low.
