Jamil's Chaat House - Paneer roasted

Jamil's Chaat House

Beaconsfield Village, West Queen West

I will comment on the setup first as it did effect the overall experience. The space is tight and a…read morelot of counter seating which is tight as well for someone who is slightly above average height for Canada. I was quite uncomfortable during the whole meal and that's without wearing or holding heavy winter jacket etc. I wonder what was here before maybe a cafe as the space seemed to be geared towards that. Stairs to go down are also a bit of unnerving venture with winter boots. Washrooms hmm need to be lit and cleaned better unless they are part of the theme! Here is a play by play of the food: Squash chaat hmm didn't enjoy this at all. I couldn't identify much in terms of the taste and the spicing/sauces? didn't add anything to it either. Karahi chicken bun a decent take on this street side food with spice not held back. I enjoyed this somewhat the person I dined with it didn't. Samosa chaat: again a decent take on this street side dish. The sauces are elevated a bit from what one expects. Decent kick as well and tamarind taste coming through in the sauce. Roasted paneer: very disappointing dish. I was expecting a lot of taste either from the sauce or the paneer itself. Nope not the case at all. Big chunks devoid of any character. Beef kebab: hmm ok for what you expect. The charred cabbage was better than the main IMO. Sourdough naan decent. I can't really expect Gerarrd street prices here as the neighborhood and overheads wouldn't allow it. The appetizer (chaat) items are decent but the mains are below average. 2.5 stars out of 5 especially due to the uncomfortable setup.

Jamil's Chaat House located near Queen and Dovercourt serves up Pakistani street eats with a twist…read more They actually hosted numerous popups around the city in Toronto and even in B.C. and NYC before finally opening their own restaurant here in the city. The menu consists of small plates that are meant to be shared among others (or not). There is also an extensive wine list and cocktails with a Southeast Asian twist. The restaurant space is small and intimate, seating around 25 customers with both bar and table seats available. Washroom is not accessible as it does require one to navigate a set of stairs. I had been following Jamil's Chaat House on Instagram for a while now and was excited to try their food! I stopped by after work at 5pm for a drink and pre-dinner small bites where I sat at the bar. I was surprised that even at 5pm the restaurant was already half full. Staff were super friendly and went through the menu with me, making sure if I had any questions they'd be happy to answer them. I ordered an Alma Sour cocktail, the dahi puri (semolina, potato, chickpea, tamarind, cilantro yogurt), the smoked baingan kachumar (eggplant, tomato, ginger - served chilled), and the gulab jamun (cardamom syrup, rose petals, lime zest). All the dishes and the cocktail packed a punch of flavour and were all delicious! I especially enjoyed the dahi puri and the gulab jamun wasn't too sweet. Staff did recommend the karahi chicken bun but I wasn't sure if it would be too much food for me (will have to try it next time!!). Overall, a great new spot along Queen St. W. serving Pakistani street food that packs a punch of flavour. Cocktails are creative and service was great as well. A casual spot for a pre-dinner snack, dinner with friends, or late night eats (they close at 11pm!).

Church-Wellesley Village, Downtown Core

The worker was nice and took his time to explain the menu, as they were working on listing the full menu at the store. I got their Friday Special, which was fried fish as I was a bit hungry and also grateful that they let us use the washroom without us buying anything. Fried Fish The fried fish was light and moist on the inside with a crisp coating and it went really well with the dipping sauce. The worker recommended Chicken Biryani as their most popular item, which I think I will get next time. Lollipop Chicken We got this on the the house, and the chicken was VERY juicy. I loved it. Mango Delight We also got this on the house. I'm not a big fan of a fruit salad, but this was like a mango fruit salad, which was very pleasant. I'm keeping this place in mind for the next time I'm in the area. I loved the worker here and the quality of the dish as it was also such a reasonable price!

With a $4 burger, I don't think you can find a cheaper place selling burgers in the city. I tried the Desi Vegetarian Burger, which consisted of a patty made of mashed potatoes and spices (Aloo Tikki Burger) and green & tamarind chutneys. The bun was soft and the patty, along with the chutneys / sauces, were very flavourful. The chaat was quite spicy, but ok if you add more yogurt to it.

Their chai and paan are good too. For those who don't know a bun kababs is a meat and lentil kabab mashed up and made into a pattie topped a plain egg omelette along with onions and red and green chutney tucked into a bun. It's pretty delicious and one is enough to fill you up. Earlier I have had spicy corn and kulfi which is pretty standard. The corn is grilled over fire and topped with lime and chilli masala. They do keep Kashmiri pink tea. We normally just order it and eat it in the car. During covid times their seating is very limited and clustered hence I wouldn't like to take any chances. As far the the pricing goes it's pretty cheap. So 2 bun kababs, a chaat and a diet coke came to around $21. If you're looking for good ambience it's not the place to go. On weekends and holidays their order taking is pretty backed up. Lots of street parking. It is on Gerard street.
