When you walk inside you are greeted by busy servers and two life-sized welcoming figures. There's also fresh water and salt water fish tanks (not the gimmicky ones from Red Lobster; these actually have pretty fish). The walls and partitions are covered in Thai art. One of Winston-Salem's longest-running Thai establishments, Cha Da Thai made for a frustratingly uneven dining experience. To the restaurant's credit, it's very nicely appointed. The interior features decorative woodwork, plants, and even a fish tank. The ambiance here is cozy and inviting. Cha Da also boasts a sizeable menu. In addition to the soups, salads, curries, rice, and noodle dishes you'd expect, there are more lamb, duck, and fish offerings than you'd find at many Thai places. Everything else was a mixed bag. Servers are affable, but the kitchen is rather slow. The food ranged from off-putting to solidly satisfying, with nothing really impressing. An order of papaya salad was generously portioned but went too heavy on the fish sauce. A tofu green curry featured a flavorful, coconut-forward sauce that was both tasty and too thin, and the accompanying vegetables could have benefited from more eggplant and less cabbage. A chicken Pad Thai hit the desired level of spiciness and did not skimp on the tamarind. While it was sweeter than I've had elsewhere, it hit the spot overall. Oh Cha Da, I miss your Boone location so I had to swing thru for lunch today after I cleaned up one of the rental properties. A solid lunch special with a small salad with peanut dressing and a crispy egg roll with sweet & sour sauce were the perfect palate peeler upper for the Pad Woon Sen. As I've done before after a less than grand experience, I returned here to try again. This place has been around almost 20 years and has a solid 4.2 Yelp rating. I have found that for me it's usually a matter of selecting the right dish at a Thai restaurant. I find I don't care for most of the noodle and stir fry options - some of the sauces and spices don't work for me. The complimentary soup and spring roll came out and was just as before - under seasoned, bland - at least they were free! The Chicken Stay was interesting - the chicken skewers were tasty, though a bit stringy, the peanut sauce was very thick, smothering taste - sauces are to argument, not happening with this! I wanted the whole Red Snapper but they were out, so I chose the whole flounder instead. It came with Ginger Sauce which turned out to be a rather strange dish. The fish came out rather slowly , and it turned out that it wasn't a good dish - it was overcooked and dry. I often have the Mexican version of this, Mojarra Frita, which is almost always a whole Talipa, and I have never had one cooked like this. The Ginger sauce was more a stew than a sauce - a ginger infused broth with plenty of ground chicken, sliced onions, chopped bell peppers, mushrooms, bean sprouts, and sliced carrots. While it was an interesting dish, it did nothing for the dry fish. Twice is enough, I'll seek my Thai fix elsewhere - Chang Thai, Thai Sawatdee, Thai Harmony, or Chiang Mai Thai! read more

I absolutely love Thai food, it's comforting, yet layered and complex. I don't think I could pick a favorite dish so it's always tough to choose an entree. On this visit we went with the Panang Salmon and the Pad Nam-Prik-Paow. One of my favorite things about Cha Da Thai is the fun plates and serving dishes they use and we weren't disappointed on this trip. Both dishes came out promptly and were chocked full of vegetables with a nice bite to them (no overcooked or soggy veggies here). I used to work in the shopping center that Cha Da Thai is located in, but never stopped by. I was over that way today and decided to give it a try. As you walk through the door, the decor and lighting are warm and inviting. Plenty of seating for anyone waiting for a to-go order. I was a little confused when I was finally greeted. No one walked up directly to me. They sort of stood back and asked, " Can I help you ma'am?"! I finally figured out they were talking to me and said that I'd like to sit and eat. The dining area had a few booths and tables. I was given a choice of which. After sitting, 2 menus were placed on the table. One was specifically for lunch specials, and the other was a general menu. I was asked what I wanted to drink and if I'd like soup or salad. I said neither. I ordered the Chicken Pad Kee Mao without eggs and a Thai tea. While I waited for my entrée, I was provided two spring rolls since I didn't want soup or salad. The Thai tea was served in a decorative glass. It was lovely to look at, but spilled over as I stirred. The flavor was perfect it wasn't too sweet and perfectly spiced. The food came out really fast. It was pretty, but I did not enjoy it. There was entirely too much sauce, and the noodles were overcooked. After trying the meal, I realized that I didn't provide a spice level when I ordered, and I wasn't asked, so there was ZERO heat. We ordered the dumplings and spring rolls to start. The dumplings were fantastic and really peaked their interest and enthusiasm. We ordered the Pad Thai, Sweet and Sour Thai and the Pad Woonsen. Someone recommended this place to me and that I had to try the Angel Wings. They did not disappoint me. It was crispy. It is (Marinated boneless chicken wings stuffed with mushrooms, onion, carrot, celery and glass noodles, fried golden crispy and served with cucumber in sweet chili sauce topped with ground peanut). When you walk inside, you'll notice the Thai decorations throughout the restaurant and be greeted by a friendly employee, who will direct you to one of the many booths and table seatings they have inside. Service has never been an issue for me here. For the food, I rotate between their fried rice, pad thai, or curries. You won't go wrong with any of those choices here. You can customize your spice levels (mild to Thai hot) so the dish perfectly matches your spice tolerance. I appreciate how their spicy dishes are packed full of flavor rather than adding so much spice that it dilutes the other flavors of the dish. As for protein, they offer chicken, beef, tofu, and seafood, in addition to vegetarian choices. Whichever way you customize your dish, they'll make it right. I struggled between 1-2 stars. The only reason I went with 2 is because they at least attempted an authentic pad Thai with a brown sauce. I will break this down in detail of why I'm giving a low review. It was a very disappointing experience. 1. Chicken or thai with brown sauce. Kudos for doing a brown sauce. This fell short with how dry it was and how little chicken was involved. I understand inflation, but the prices are not cheap, so I expect quality and balance. Good amount of crushed peanuts. There were also no bean sprouts. Edible, but is that really all you should strive for? 2. Fresh spring roll. The peanut sauce was lacking. One was too thick and gooey and the other watery: too much soy? I had a first and that was that my fresh spring roll obliterated about 2/3 in. OH and the best part was the shell that wedged between my teeth. Attention to detail goes a long way. 3. Finally the last point. The side of stir-fry vegetables with added chicken that I ordered for my 21 month old. Extremely over priced for portion, and the chicken was dry. My not picky eater wouldn't eat it. I should have gotten her a $9 hibachi with steak, veggies, and noodles. A side of grilled veggies at a local Mexican restaurant was an entire plate that was given for free that I would have gladly paid $9 for. My dad once told me the worst Thai restaurant would still be delicious. He would have been disappointed to eat here bc then he would not be able to say that anymore. Their glasses are shaped like bamboo and their plates/dishes are beautifully shaped with intricate designs. The service was very prompt and friendly. One of the closest if not the closest Thai restaurant to us. We are so blessed as this place is consistently fabulous in all areas. A reasonable price performer. Service is very accommodating and with attention to detail and pleasant accommodating depositions. The flavors in both of our different types of soups were so so so robust , tickles all the taste buds in the mouth and the throat. Both tangy in zesty an explosion of taste. The main dishes were colorful and presented so nicely and they too had wonderful seasonings at the appropriate levels not as much as the soups but still robust. The sauce on my entree was definitely on the hot side and the rice was really needed to balance it out which is wonderful for me. It made for a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner experience. Cha Da Thai is a solid 4 for me, and definitely a place I will return to. It's tucked away in a shopping center set back from Jonestown Rd. near where you'd get onto 421 North, and a little unassuming from the outside. Once you walk in though, you'll feel transported straight to east Asia with the decor. which for me is awesome. They have real plant vines growing on the walls helping to divide sections, wood paneling, vibrant silk looking tapestries, and plenty of other uniquely eastern items. As for the food, the main thing I would say about it is that it is plentiful, even for the lunch specials. For my first time, I went pretty basic with the Pad Thai. I also ordered some Som Tum, which is also known as green papaya salad. The pad thai lunch special came with a delicious spring roll, and a simple broth soup, both were welcome appetizers. After that my som tum came out, which is one of my favorite thai salads. I found the flavor a little underwhelming. Perhaps I should come back at a time of year when the papaya is more in season, but I felt the lime dressing was not all that zesty. That said, the portion was HUGE! I had plenty to take home, and added a bit more zest back at my place for later. Finally, my pad thai appeared, and straight off the bat I asked for their chili sauce knowing that I'd want it hotter. There is more tamarind in this version that I'm used to, it's a little sweet. But once I mixed in some of that delicious red chile sauce and let it set in, it was perfect. Cha Da is a cute Thai place that has great food. The service was also very good. We came on a Sunday for lunch and were pleased to see they offered lunch specials on Sundays. We started with the chicken satay and Thai iced tea. We enjoyed the satay and my son loved the salad that came with it too. I had the Sunday curry which had a nice kick but was not too spicy for me. Lunch comes with soup or salad and spring rolls. My son loved the chicken rice soup. I enjoyed my salad. The portions are perfect for lunch. Next time I want to try the bail noodles since that is my favorite dish. read more

My family eats Thai on a regular basis. There are some Thai places in town that are more for folks that avoid spice. This restaurant is much more spicy and flavorful. I am so excited to have such an authentic place in town! Great food and good prices! read more

Yum yum yum. First timer and won't be my last. Everything tasted home made and filled with so many spices and flavors. Can never go wrong with a thai tea which was just a tad bit on the sweeter side here but not bad. The steamed dumplings tasted fresh. I shared the seafood hot pot and it was neat how it was served in a flaming bowl that kept the soup hot. Such a neat experience. The atmosphere and decor was nice and my server was very friendly and accommodating as one of my cousins has a peanut and shellfish allergy so she made sure to have the right dish for her.
