Ours is a gas, direct vent fireplace. So we wanted piece of mind knowing that our home is completely safe and how to use the fireplace. I checked with the BBB, Facebook posts and their awesome website. Their website is a must to check out!! They have multiple videos for the work that they do on which type of fireplace you have. Ron walks you through what they do and how it benefits your family and your home. We had James Yoshida over as the technician. We have two boys (4 & 2) that were also home and very interested in who he was and what he was doing. James laid down blankets to protect our floor from any mess. He took things apart and serviced the fireplace. Vacuumed the logs, replaced the embers, cleaned the glass and painted the inside to look new. He made sure before he painted that no one was allergic to paint fumes. Which I thought was a great question to ask as you never know. My children were all up in his business asking questions and James had the patience to answer them. (They has good questions) James even blew up a glove for the kiddos to share. It was refreshing to invite a stranger into your home and have them leave as a friend would. I highly recommend the company. I also wanted to mention Ron as each time I called, he took the time to answer my questions. At first when I told him I was gathering quotes, I hung up from him thinking that was nice to not feel pressured to have to set up an appointment right away or make a split decision. I called back after the service was performed to gather more clarification and Ron nailed my questions. Finally, we have a digital copy of the service performed along with photos of before, during and after. We will see them again next Winter.

Disappointed that they charge us more than quoted, without acknowledging why. I can't help but assume they have no fee schedule, and make it up as they go along. Also when they arrived, they neglected to tell us they did not have caps, but had to order one in. So we had to pay a second service charge to have the cap installed and ordered. Since we were dealing with animals, and they knew that, I expected them to tell me on the phone they did not have the ability to cap the same day (as I had requested this on the call). Overall way more expensive than it needed to be, since they were less than forthcoming.

Didn't hear anything for a week, so I e-mailed them about it. Didn't hear anything for a week, so I called them. They said they'd call me back the next day. It's been several days, nothing. Don't use this company if you want any kind of customer service. Update - After being hassled by me for a couple weeks, they finally came out and put a dryer vent thing on. However, what they did is nail a screen onto it. Obviously over the past two months this has trapped tons of lint (I had no idea this was what they did - I didn't know I needed to babysit them while they did their work) and caused us to need our dryer vents cleaned (and the external cap replaced) AGAIN. Obviously we did not contact Midtown Chimney Sweeps for this, because we want it done right this time. We called up Duct Medic, and when I told them we'd need a new external dryer vent cap, they told me it would be a fancy magnetic flapper that opens when the dryer is going and closes when it's not. Sounds fantastic, and infinitely better than NAILING A SCREEN ONTO MY HOUSE. If you want service, go with Duct Medic. Midtown doesn't care, obviously.

Well, I was pretty stoked about the wood-burning stove in our house. I decided to schedule a maintenance/chimney sweep for the stove, and had heard good things about Top Hat. It takes a little bit of patience to make initial contact with Top Hat. I didn't use their online tool for contact but rather called Steven and left a voicemail. It took him a few days to get back to me, which is understandable for a small business serving such a big area. Since I didn't use the online contact tool, I don't know if they would be quicker or not. Additionally, I'm sure this time of year is exceptionally busy with people preparing for winter. Scheduling an appointment for an inspection was incredibly easy. Top Hat was able to provide a 1-hour time slot for when they would arrive. Such a minimal time limit is exceptionally rare for any kind of contract/maintenance/repair work. Heck, even the cable and internet companies require about 4 hours of availability. Steven and his assistant were very professional, and worked quickly. Steven answered all of my questions, even though I know some of them were ignorant concerning fireplaces/stoves. Even though our wood stove is not up to code, I feel confident that Top Hat would do a fantastic job renovating the area (check their website for photos). He even provided a loose estimate of what kind of repairs we would need. Price for service was exactly as stated on the phone, and if/when we decide to make changes to our wood stove, we will be contacting Top Hat.

They have kept our house warm during power outages, since you can turn them off and on with remote, and not needing electricity, which is so handy to do so from the easy chair. But the guys helped me and back to normal. The stoves are great. The guys let us browse around and did not pressure type sales, just answered questions and gave info. They installed it, cleaned up, explained how to use it, and gave great service. They have a huge selection for every style to choose from, little old fashion to modern and sleek. On top of this, their bid for a higher quality and larger fireplace was nearly $2,000 less than one of their major competitors (Claxton). This business will do tear out of old fireplace units if needed which some businesses we visited would not. I cannot say enough positive things about John and the Fireplace by design team. My opinion is they are the best in town.

They scam you out of money and then block your calls and even change their numbers to avoid you. I called them for a quote to repair my chimney. Not once did they mention a fee for coming out to take a look when I was setting up the appointment. Once they arrived, the owner told me he needed to clean the fireplace to get a good look. Once again, no fee was mentioned for doing this. After all was said and done, he informs me that I owe him $145 for service fees and cleaning!! To top that off, he didn't even give me a quote for the work I was needing done because he didn't have his catalogs in yet. Something he should've mentioned when I set up the appointment! Not that I would ever give this guy my business, but till this day, (a month after he came out) he has yet to send me the quote he said he would mail us. We gave this guy $145 for absolutely nothing other than for having him clean a chimney that isn't even functional. After calling him about all this and voicing our concerns, he said he would refund half our money back. After a week of not receiving the refund in the mail, we started calling and leaving messages that weren't being returned. After a week of calling, they blocked our phones altogether. It wasn't until we contacted the BBB that the owner, Mike Render, finally sent us a check although it wasn't even for the amount that he owed us. He did a great job on everything, and has been honest and very open to communication from the start. Right now he's redoing our basement.
