I used Thaddeus last year for a chimney cleaning and was happy with his service. He told me at…read morethat time I would not need another chimney cleaning for 5 years because it is gas and doesn't create soot buildup like a real fireplace. (although other companies say you can go 20 years unless of course you get a birds nest or something in it) Recently my gas fireplace was burning unevenly so I ask Thaddeus with Certified Sweeps to come check it. When he came I had other things going on at my house so did not sit and watch him the whole time. At one point when I came back in the living room I saw he was in the process of cleaning my chimney. I was shocked but didn't say anything as he already appeared to be nearly done. And why would he be doing this since he did it a year ago and even told me at the time I could wait another 5 years. He did correct the burn of the gas buy vacuuming away some sand that was likely causing the clogs and did a quick cleaning of the logs which was basically just vacuuming them. He was here just under an hour. When he finished he said he was going to truck to create my invoice (which I never did get). He came back in and said it was $266 and that was with $50 off because he said he was here so recently he gave me a discount. So this service would have been $316 normally. I was shocked but didn't want to say anything as I had company over so I texted him the next day to ask why he felt the need to clean the chimney when he just did it last year AND that is not the service I asked for. After many back and forth texts, between me trying to ask why he cleaned the chimney (which he never directly answered) and I said I felt a bit "taken" he obviously became irritated with beginning the next text by saying "Look..."! That was a bit shocking as I was not angry at all just trying to understand and said it was hard when I never received an invoice breaking down the services. He basically just said it was a package deal but he did say the chimney cleaning was an extra $100. IMO that was a waste of my $100.00 and that doesn't sound like a package deal. At that point I said it sounded like he was angry so I told him that and said I was just leaving it alone and told him to have a great day. Crazy. TBH I appreciate that he is very clean when he works in your home and was a reason I contacted him when I had a problem. However the sweep company I previously used was just as clean but unfortunately he no longer does it due to health issues which is how I ended up using Thaddeus last year. I will not use Thaddeus with Certified in the future. Upon calling other sweeps it sounds like he overcharged me overall, and other sweeps said they would absolutely perform a service like this without having to clean an already clean chimney and charge the extra for doing so.

Well, I was pretty stoked about the wood-burning stove in our house. I decided to schedule a maintenance/chimney sweep for the stove, and had heard good things about Top Hat. It takes a little bit of patience to make initial contact with Top Hat. I didn't use their online tool for contact but rather called Steven and left a voicemail. It took him a few days to get back to me, which is understandable for a small business serving such a big area. Since I didn't use the online contact tool, I don't know if they would be quicker or not. Additionally, I'm sure this time of year is exceptionally busy with people preparing for winter. Scheduling an appointment for an inspection was incredibly easy. Top Hat was able to provide a 1-hour time slot for when they would arrive. Such a minimal time limit is exceptionally rare for any kind of contract/maintenance/repair work. Heck, even the cable and internet companies require about 4 hours of availability. Steven and his assistant were very professional, and worked quickly. Steven answered all of my questions, even though I know some of them were ignorant concerning fireplaces/stoves. Even though our wood stove is not up to code, I feel confident that Top Hat would do a fantastic job renovating the area (check their website for photos). He even provided a loose estimate of what kind of repairs we would need. Price for service was exactly as stated on the phone, and if/when we decide to make changes to our wood stove, we will be contacting Top Hat.

Didn't hear anything for a week, so I e-mailed them about it. Didn't hear anything for a week, so I called them. They said they'd call me back the next day. It's been several days, nothing. Don't use this company if you want any kind of customer service. Update - After being hassled by me for a couple weeks, they finally came out and put a dryer vent thing on. However, what they did is nail a screen onto it. Obviously over the past two months this has trapped tons of lint (I had no idea this was what they did - I didn't know I needed to babysit them while they did their work) and caused us to need our dryer vents cleaned (and the external cap replaced) AGAIN. Obviously we did not contact Midtown Chimney Sweeps for this, because we want it done right this time. We called up Duct Medic, and when I told them we'd need a new external dryer vent cap, they told me it would be a fancy magnetic flapper that opens when the dryer is going and closes when it's not. Sounds fantastic, and infinitely better than NAILING A SCREEN ONTO MY HOUSE. If you want service, go with Duct Medic. Midtown doesn't care, obviously.

Ours is a gas, direct vent fireplace. So we wanted piece of mind knowing that our home is completely safe and how to use the fireplace. I checked with the BBB, Facebook posts and their awesome website. Their website is a must to check out!! They have multiple videos for the work that they do on which type of fireplace you have. Ron walks you through what they do and how it benefits your family and your home. We had James Yoshida over as the technician. We have two boys (4 & 2) that were also home and very interested in who he was and what he was doing. James laid down blankets to protect our floor from any mess. He took things apart and serviced the fireplace. Vacuumed the logs, replaced the embers, cleaned the glass and painted the inside to look new. He made sure before he painted that no one was allergic to paint fumes. Which I thought was a great question to ask as you never know. My children were all up in his business asking questions and James had the patience to answer them. (They has good questions) James even blew up a glove for the kiddos to share. It was refreshing to invite a stranger into your home and have them leave as a friend would. I highly recommend the company. I also wanted to mention Ron as each time I called, he took the time to answer my questions. At first when I told him I was gathering quotes, I hung up from him thinking that was nice to not feel pressured to have to set up an appointment right away or make a split decision. I called back after the service was performed to gather more clarification and Ron nailed my questions. Finally, we have a digital copy of the service performed along with photos of before, during and after. We will see them again next Winter.

Disappointed that they charge us more than quoted, without acknowledging why. I can't help but assume they have no fee schedule, and make it up as they go along. Also when they arrived, they neglected to tell us they did not have caps, but had to order one in. So we had to pay a second service charge to have the cap installed and ordered. Since we were dealing with animals, and they knew that, I expected them to tell me on the phone they did not have the ability to cap the same day (as I had requested this on the call). Overall way more expensive than it needed to be, since they were less than forthcoming.
