We went to this place on a Friday evening. I had been there before and had a lot of fun.When we first walked in there were two ladies at the counter. I was surprised that neither one of them greeted us. Once my party arrived, we chose our ceramics, which, by the way are outrageous in price. The cheapest one was $25!! We went in to the party room. I was really surprised that no one came in to give us direction on what we were supposed to do with the paint. About half way through the evening, one of the girls finally came in and scolded us that we were not allowed to take bottles of paint into the room. There demeanor was very rude. I just picked up my 2 little mini planters that I painted and it came out pretty cute! I'm no Picasso and I had no intention of making my planters perfect but I love it nonetheless. I arrived here a few days ago on a weekday right when it opened for some ME time and I pretty much set aside half the day for this. Dannee was the person who took care of my questions and was super personable. He raised the bar on customer service. With that said, let me fill you in on very HELPFUL information I've learned spending a solid 4.5 hours here to myself that'll help those who are reading this. When you enter CeramiCafe and head straight to the register, you will be instructed to pick your selected pieces (prices are on the bottom) and head back to the register to pay. After you pay, you will be given some paint palettes and you will be directed to where the paints are at and then go choose a free spot to paint. Easy enough. I chose the pictured 2 mini planters thinking I'll be done within 2 hours. Look at it. They're SMALL. What I didn't prepare for is how long this painting process was going to be. Time literally flies. You will be instructed to paint THREE layers of paint on your piece so that when it gets processed, the paint won't fade off. I saw some examples of those who didn't listen and just did one or two layers. It appeared faded and incomplete. So take to heart that if you want a beautiful piece at the end of all your hard work, paint. Let dry. Paint again. Let dry. Then paint for one FINAL time. Believe me, the 3 part process I didn't plan on WILL be the most time consuming of your stay here. By the time I was finished, 4 hours had flown and that's by myself. I wanted to finish in one go so I can get it processed. When you're done, let the staff member know. There is 5 day turnaround time to pick up your piece but for me, since it was before Father's Day weekend it was extended to a 7 day turnaround time. If you want it sooner, you have the option to pay $6 for a 3 day turnaround time which I took advantage of. Other notable FYIs and advice that I can think of: 1. First off, this place is first come, first serve. No need to make an appt. Also know that there is NO time limit for how long a customer can stay and work on their project which to me, is pretty awesome. No stress. Keep that in mind when you make your visit. Busiest and most impossible days to relax and paint is Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Hello, paint parties are held and people are generally off on the weekends. Go on a weekday! Also, allow yourself a REALISTIC time frame of at least 3 hours on your project. Remember, 3 layers of paint! Don't be the fool who waltzes less than an hour before closing expecting that your masterpiece is going to be done. 2. Don't be pretentious. I saw mostly parents and kids here. Know that you will most likely share a table space. If you're one to get annoyed by that and get all hot and bothered that the table moved when you were painting something that needed special care, then find a spot for yourself. I did. I sat in a corner and didn't have to worry about anyone messing with my flow. 3. If you run out of time and not finished with your project, you can take your ceramic piece home and come back another day to complete your project. Be sure to bring your original receipt with you as proof. Its not like CeramiCafe keeps a log on your purchase. Be prepared. Bring your receipt at your next visit so you don't have issues. 4. You know what's funny? I saw quite a few first time Moms bringing their small kids in and thinking they'll have this wonderful painting time together. Be realistic. Pick something small and let them have at it. After a certain time, little kids are going to start acting up like the little kids they are. I saw quite a few pissed off Moms acting out themselves when they see their kids getting super frustrated or simply lost focus on their project. 5. GROUPON! This is what lured me in. Purchase a Groupon at a discount to maximize your savings here. The ceramic pieces a bit pricey but you have to keep in mind, the cost of CeramiCafe doing that final process of your piece is already included in the price. Also, be aware that you can only use ONE groupon per visit. No combining TWO Groupons. 6. There is no restroom here. The nearest restroom is in the Food Court, which is a one minute quick walk to get there. Have fun. Ask questions. The staff here was great. I had a great time due to the day and time that I arrived. I followed the painting advice Dannee stressed to me about and I LOVE my very imperfect, but color filled planters. I'll definitely come again and with friends! read more

We each got to choose from their variety of figures, ranging from animals to mugs or whatever depending on how much you wanted to pay. Update: today I went in and re made the item Pictured. I was pleased with how the managers and owner handled the situation promptly and I am very satisfied, upon learning of my dissatisfied product outcome. I will make this a five star review upon the final completion of my item when I get it back and as long as it is in the proper condition. 1st post: Super upset with my product. When I picked it up I opened it and questioned the employee why there were spots of painting where I didn't put any and they said it happens and there is nothing they can do about it. So $35 for one piece I spent three hours painting and it was a memory piece to have for years and I can't even display it. I have before I left pictures and finished picture as well. read more

If you get a plate it costs $22 and then you'll have a weird amount left over. Anyway, I came in today because it's about to expire and got the dragon my daughter had asked for. This was $42 and I had to pay an extra $14 (because of tax, I suppose) for it. If you get a Groupon, I would get 2 if you plan to do it with kids. In the middle of a weekday, there were only a few people here. Yet somehow the girls working at the next table over managed to keep bumping into my table every time they passed, or leaned on it while they looked over the selection, causing my table to shake. I wished I'd picked one of the high tables off to the side.Or that the mother in charge of them had told them to take care. Not all the paints had their sample pieces so you could see the colors, which I thought was odd. Also, when you get paint I'd write down the number you used, because if you need more of the same color you might not recall which bottle it was. Facility minuses: no AC and no bathroom. This would be a big problem if you were hosting a kid birthday party. Someone would have to walk the kid to the food court. After you're done painting, I think they want you to wash your stuff in the back. I'm not sure because there was no signage. Maybe you're meant to leave them on the tables. We Loved Loved Loved this place!! We aren't from the area so we found them on Groupon and had a blast. I even got in there and painted with the kiddies. The selection was by far one of the best we've seen. But I think it would be great to have more mugs to choose from. They did however have two Bulldogs which is why I decided to paint with the kids. When we arrived we were the first one there and it was great but two hours later it started to get pretty packed and the place was full. So I would suggest coming here when they open. Ranging from baby unicorn piggy banks to beer steins. This place has something for everyone! Once you pick your piece you go up front and pay for it so you can start to paint! One good thing about this place is they don't charge you a studio fee. At most ceramic places you have to pay for your piece plus a "small" studio fee to use their supplies. I did notice that the prices of the pieces were on the higher side so that's probably how they get away with no studio fee. I decided to go with a vase for my office. The possibilities are literally endless here! I decided to go with a very classy mustache theme for my vase. You do have to come back in five days to pick up your masterpiece but that's the norm. It takes a bit to get all the pieces into the kiln to fire. There were all sorts of people here; children of all ages, teenagers on dates, couples on date night, friends, even a few older people were here to paint the night away! I've been here twice. The first time it was really enjoyable. I found the choices great and they were being sold for a very fair price. I noticed that people were coming in with Groupons and that I had missed my chance. I finally got one when they offered it this year though. I have to say that I wasn't as satisfied this time. When I took my friends I saw that it was really hard to pick something. For one, the prices were sky high! For a small bowl it was $24! I did not remember it being that high last time. Especially since I got a cookie jar and it wasn't that price for sure. And another thing is their selection was horrible. I had to pick something though so I went with the lotus bowl. I have to add that it is great that you can stay for as long as you want to paint and their selection of colors is awesome. They have things around the store that you can use for inspiration as well. This time the employees weren't as helpful. I think the guy was new and the girl was training him, but they sure weren't talking about work! It was so annoying hearing them swap their life stories and upbringing while we tried to paint. I can seriously name which schools they went to, what sports they played, what their studying and so on and so on. But anyway!... Now a week later I went to pick up my items and they had their great selection all over again! I was asking a girl how exactly that works and she was SO snotty I couldn't even stand it. It really pains me to write a one star review; however, the customer service and overall experience continues to be increasingly worse each time I've been to this shop/cafe over the past year. I have been going to this place over 10 years. Unfortunately, over the years, the service has gotten worse and worse. The two employees that cover the store at any given time spend a lot of time, energy and effort on all of their duties "in the back"--I totally understand that there is a lot of prep work and clean up, but perhaps there needs to be an additional employee there to help support the patrons currently in the store. For example, when someone was helping me today and after waiting 45 minutes (and received no resolution) and I asked the other employee on working if I could speak to the employee to was helping me--he had a huge attitude and explained to me in a rude manner, "Oh, we're really busy right now." --I totally understand that things get busy--but really? I was sitting right in front of the register for 45 MINUTES waiting to be helped. 45 MINUTES and no help. In short- one of the times I went to pick up a finished item--it was well past the date it was suppose to be finished. Luckily, I called first to verify if it would be finished--I think they threw it in the kiln last minute because when I picked it up, I was told that my piece was extremely hot and I had to wait over an hour before I could hold it. This most recent time: I ordered a Clay Print of my child's handprint to create a birthday keepsake. Clay Prints are only done Mon-Fri. The woman who helped me was very kind and helped me locate letters to stamp my clay. There were no full sets of letters A-Z in any font. I was told that the clay print would be ready in seven days and when I didn't receive a call after 10 days, I called myself to find out that my clay print was ready to be painted. I told the store employee that since I live far away, I told her when I would be coming in to paint (Sunday, 1/16), "no problem" they said. Two days later, I get a call telling me my clay print is ready to paint. --Wow! (Sarcasm) I was the one who called them TWO DAYS AGO. I also mentioned when I'd be coming in to paint a second time. Sunday comes, I travel far to Cerami Cafe to Paint and I find out that the entire store is closed to the public and that I cannot finish my piece. So sad. I came back to Cerami Cafe back for the second time to paint my clay print only to find out that the holes on the top of my piece were place too close together for me to use for decorative purposes. The holes were too close to each other. Management nor the owner will rectify the situation. Maybe I'll have better luck/service next time. read more

We came as a big group of about 9 girls to CeramiCafe on a Saturday afternoon. They were really accommodating because we all had Groupons we wanted to use. They have a wide selection of ceramic bases to choose from and a good selection of paint colors as well. I just wish that they had a better selection of puffy paint because they were either dried out or it wasn't a color I liked. It gets really busy here especially on weekends despite the location in a small outdoor "mall." Parking is plentiful as it is in this plaza. I would definitely try to call ahead and see if you can make a reservation. read more

I always love this place. It's the best place to take the kids and have a good date. It is great that it is in the mall so you can grab a pretzel and get a table and eat and paint and have a good afternoon. My daughter is only two and we still have the best time here. I loved this place. We came in and they put us on a wait list, within 20 minutes of us on the waiting list we got a call and had a table ready for us. We have gone painting at different ceramic painting places all throughout the country as we have moved around and this is one of my favorite places thus far. This place had an awesome selection of pottery and so many different colors. My only qualm was that there were not many paint brushes, but I think that was because it was a busy Saturday night with two different parties going on. I have been to the CermiCafe in Del Mar many times so when I needed to come up with a kid friendly activity, on a weekend, in this area, I knew this would be a great option. This is in Grossmont shopping plaza in the middle near the movie theater. It was a bit difficult to find the first time but now that I know it is near the movie theater I will always park there and enter in that area. This location is smaller than the location in Del Mar and honestly just a bit too cramped for what I feel is safe. I imagine that there are quite a bit of accidents of people knocking over ceramics and hitting tables. Along one wall is all of the options for painting. Despite the store being small, there is a pretty large selection of items you and pick from. When I went it was around Christmas time so I picked a couple of ornaments to give as gifts for Christmas. Along the other wall and in the middle are tables and chairs to get your painting done. There are a few tables that can hold about 6 people but the other tables along the wall will hold 2 or 4 people. The area where you get your paints is really small and it was very unorganized. The people who were getting paints before me had a total disregard for the organizational process. There is a number on the bottle and a number on the shelf that corresponds to it so you can see what that paint color will look like once your piece has gone through the kiln however, people were placing the paints wherever and it made it very difficult to figure out which color you wanted and where it was. Also, since it was so crowded, it was difficult to even see the paints and to be able to get them. There is a birthday party area which I love the idea of but since the store is so small on its own it makes it even harder. When ten 7 year olds are coming into the main area to pick something to paint and going through the paints as well it makes for a very loud, chaotic, and messy time. Overall, I love the idea and the process but this store location is just too small to allow for enough people and to have personal space. I probably wouldn't come back on the weekend but would come during the week when it isn't as busy. I did go pick up my items 5 days later on a Thursday evening and it was dead in there. read more

This place is a lot of fun for the fam. It might seem pricey at first glance, but these peeps have to make there money to keep the mall space. Besides, if you think about the process and supplies, it's worth it. You'll get an awesome final product too! You'll choose from a selection of hardened clay objects. This was a plus for me as I think back to my high school pottery class, nothing ever made it out of the kiln to glaze. Glad this process is already done :) There are fun animals, plates, mugs, vases, or things of the sort to choose from. After that, you design it! If you're taking the kids, make sure to get something for yourself too... otherwise you might glaze over yourself waiting for them to finish. After all, when glazing, you ain't finished after the first coat. You've got 2 or 3 more coats to go. Good fun, spend the money, pick up the art next week. A lazy teen cashier ruined my families holiday! I took my 5 year old daughter to CeramiCafe to make gifts for her Dad and 2 Grandmas. I intentionally paid for 2 separate orders- 1 that my ex husband could pick up and 1 my mom could pick up. I asked the cashier to separate the orders so there would be no confusion at Christmas. The cashier was in such a rush to get back on her cell phone that she dismissed me assuring me she would separate the orders later on. She refused and just stared at me. Fast forward to today, my mom was crushed to find that there was no handmade gift to pick up because my Ex picked up both orders. My best friend and I were waiting to be able to go to the Wine & Nails Salon next door, so we popped in to paint items for our future apartment! There was a tall gentleman there, presumably the manager, and he was so friendly, informative, and detailed in his recomendations (we asked him about stencils, types of writing utensils, etc). I like coming here. I've been coming here for about 10+ years now. I've taken my kids here numerous times, I've come here with a group of friends on a Friday night, when they provide cheese and crackers and you can bring your favorite bottle of wine, and I've come here all by myself, for some peace and quiet. The shop has nice big tables to work on. They have a great selection of ceramics to paint (a little pricey though), and a variety of paints and texture material to get your creative juices flowing... They play nice music overhead. If you ever have any questions, the staff are more than happy to help. If I could change one thing (other than the prices) I would make it so that you could get your finished project back within a couple of days... But whatever the price you pay, it also includes paint and gloss as well. after you finish, you will leave your items there to dry, and gloss, then come back after a week to pick it up. Had an awesome time here. Basically what happens is you walk in, select an item or items, select paints, paint your item, leave it there to be fired, and then pick your item up a few days later. The price on the item is all inclusive and covers supplies and firing. If you are planning on going with a group or large group, you can rent out a private room or make a reservation. This way you guarantee everyone will sit together. Plan on spending a few hours here because time flies when you're having fun :) You also need to apply layer upon layer of paint to get a bold colored piece. That takes some time. The staff was nice but weren't very helpful. There were a few times we needed assistance and they didn't provide it. For example, we asked for a certain letter stamp and the girl shrugged, said I don't know, and walked away versus actually helping us look for it. When I picked up my item, I was a little disappointed but its grown on me. I chalked it up as a learning experience; not enough layers of paint :( Not to be a grump, but I went here to do something creative and relax. Screaming kids running around like crazy doesn't contribute to that kind of atmosphere. I was pleasantly surprised that even with a bunch of kids being there, it was still relaxing and fun. We walked in and I see an employee and I'm like Hi we would like to paint a ceramic she's like oh yea pick one and go pay for it.... Um okay. We picked what we wanted and went and paid, but not once did anyone say here is where the paint is, here is where you dispose of this here is this or this(as it was like that years ago) we could of left our mess on the table but decided to ask if we needed to put it away. My daughter and I were randomly walking through the mall today and happened to come across CeramiCafe. There was a good selection of ceramics to choose from. Two of the ladies even went above and beyond to try to help my daughter find what she really wanted. So you pick out what you want to paint, you pay for it and then sit down and get to painting. This being our first time, they took the time to explain to us what to do and were very kind. In 5 days you get to go back and pick up your ceramic glazed. We sat there for about 2 hours and enjoyed our time. We will be returning soon! read more

This place is freaking amazeballs! I had never been to a ceramic cafe but I had taken ceramics in high school almost 10 years ago and I loved it, so when I saw the Groupon deal they had I bought it right away. They had a $30 gift certificate for $15, AWESOME DEAL. So my girlfriend and I went in on a Sunday afternoon and the place was pretty filled up, but we were able to get started right away in one of their tables. So if you have never been to one, this is how it works: 1) you pick a ceramic object to paint 2) take it up front and pay 3) grab a seat and set your stuff down 4) grab your paint, brushes, and tools 5) get to painting! The breakdown: the ceramic objects come in all different shapes and sizes. Starting from $2 tiny letters that you can use as magnets, to big plates and vases that I saw up to about $90. I'm sure there are more expensive ones but I was looking at the cheaper ones though hehee. They are all plain and white so you can be as free as you want with your designing and painting. I chose a medium size penguin coin bank, it was $20. So the penguin is just a plain little animal, with little ovals indented for the eyes, a beak, and it's little feet. So you literally have to give it eyes, design, etc. I made mine pink of course, with a purple tummy, blush, eyelashes, and hearts on its body (see attached picture). This was one of the most relaxing days I've had and since it takes a few hours to complete your project, it's am awesome way to spend your afternoon with friends, your kids, or significant other. After you're done, they fire it and glaze it and it's ready for you to pick up in about 5 days.. I have to go pick mine up later this week and I cannot wait! I purchased a Groupon and enjoyed the experience. The store tends to be busy so be prepared for slow customer service. Other than that, all was well... until the pick-up. The 1 star reflects, a) slow customer service b) the loss of an item I intended to give as a gift c) there was absolutely NO follow-up from their store (manager or owner) d) after 5 phone calls I still couldn't get a hold of the owner, Lissette (I think that's her name). So overall, on the customer service/management side it was a POOR experience. Oh & their ceramics are over-priced. To this date my case remains unresolved. read more
