I took the 5-week Form and Function class with Misha, where I learned to throw, trim, and glaze for the first time. While I walked away with new skills and 4 pieces that I am proud of, I found Misha's style of instruction difficult to follow and unpleasant at times. Misha began the first class by telling us that she will intervene if she notices our projects going south. However, on multiple occasions she purposefully stayed quiet when a student was having trouble and then when it was too late to save the piece, she said, "I was waiting for you to ask a question." This resulted in students having to scrap their projects without time to retry. I understand that Misha aims to strike a balance between hands-on assistance and letting students figure things out on their own, but her lack of intervention felt like punishment for not following her instructions well enough. I also found it challenging that Misha structured her classes by verbally explaining all of the tasks of the day at the beginning of class. After this intro, she did not speak much for the rest of the class. During several classes, she began to work on personal projects and did not seem approachable for questions. I would have appreciated a few more demonstrations and for instructions to be repeated throughout the class. Because this was a class intended for beginners, I expected a bit more patience and active involvement from Misha. The 5-week course was structured well and allowed students to learn the entire process making ceramics, but the style of instruction made the course harder than it had to be. read more

I took the five week Form + Function course with Misha and it unfortunately wasn't the fun introduction to pottery I was hoping for. I liked that the classes were structured around specific projects as it gave us direction in our learning, however I felt Misha did not always have the patience that is required when working with a class of beginners. I think she sometimes got overwhelmed working with the students (completely understandable as 5/7 students in the class had zero experience with pottery) but she allowed this to negatively affect her instruction and often became short when asked basic questions about projects/next steps. There was very little time allocated for experimentation and students were taught to only do things one particular way (Eg. Centering, opening up). While this was likely due to time constraints, alternatives do exist and when myself/other students would inquire about modifications when steps weren't clicking or something went wrong with our piece, Misha would tell us to "figure it out" or to trash our piece entirely. She also began every class ignoring students as we entered and only broke her silence once 3+ students had greeted her. I was able to create some pieces I am really proud of in the course, and I did learn a lot, but it didn't feel like an environment where I could truly enjoy myself and explore the craft. There is no doubt that Misha is talented, however I don't think she enjoys teaching, at least not beginners. I was hoping for a welcoming environment, and am discouraged to say Ho/Co often felt a bit hostile. Perhaps my timing was bad as I know Misha released a new collection on her Etsy shop during this time and maybe felt overwhelmed due to order volume? She often worked on pieces for sale during classes, so maybe she had too much on her plate and our class was simply a casualty of this. Regardless of the cause, I unfortunately would not recommend Misha's courses and will be trying out a new studio. read more

I took the Social Ceramics class offered to test out this studio prior to booking for myself and several colleagues as a staff team building activity. The girl leading the workshop was nice. I can't recall her name, but she was kind, patient and did a great job instructing all of us first timers through creating our piece. The problem was with the owner Misha. She was incredibly rude, aggressive and condescending as several other reviews have mentioned . She was inconvenienced and annoyed to be dealing with anything related to the class although she stayed throughout "supervising". The poor instructor even seems scared of her. I'm sure she's a talented ceramicist but there are many just as talented in San Diego that have people skills and truly appreciate your business. This place is not it. read more

I wanted to share my experience with Ho/Co and Misha Ceramics after enrolling in one of their class series. While the studio space is lovely and Misha's communication is polite, my overall experience was disappointing and did not reflect the kind of flexibility or student-centered approach I'd expect from a small creative business. After realizing the class I signed up for wasn't the right fit (it moved at a faster pace and despite having completed a 5-week ceramics course earlier in the year is wasn't learner friendly and the instructor Misha was quite rude when teaching and lost her patience), I reached out early in the session to request a prorated refund. Instead, I was only offered a limited-time class credit with multiple conditions and deadlines that weren't clearly stated upfront. When I tried to use the credit the following week, I was told I had missed the sign-up window and that no further accommodations could be made -- even after explaining I had a family emergency. It's unfortunate because I entered the process with respect and appreciation for the studio's work, but I left feeling dismissed and boxed in by inflexible policies. I hope future students have a clearer experience and that the studio reconsiders how it handles exceptions and communication when genuine life circumstances arise. read more

I took the 5 week Form and Function course with Misha, which is listed as a beginner class. It was really cool watching Misha work because she is clearly very talented and has a strong grasp of the fundamentals. I was able to employ techniques that were different than I had learned in previous classes, which I appreciated. I also enjoyed that the course allowed you to learn new skills each week while building off your projects from the week before. However, the class felt hostile due to Misha's attitude and demeanor towards her students. Every week before class started, Misha would ignore the group of us students waiting outside while she went in to prep. Once she was ready, she would swing the door open without saying a word, unless someone engaged first. All interactions were very short. The steps for the week's technique were explained at the beginning of class, and we were expected to remember what to do while Misha worked on personal projects, which made things difficult. More step by step demos or repeated explanations would have fixed this, especially in a beginner course. If we asked questions or requested help, Misha's replies were frequently condescending or dismissive, such as 'Why would you do that?' or 'Figure it out.' It felt more like we were a nuisance or interruption to Misha's working time, rather than being there to learn from her. I witnessed at least 2-3 classmates have to throw entire pieces away because something went wrong, and rather than trying to proactively help (like she claimed she would do), Misha would say she was 'waiting for [them] to ask questions.' This is very ineffective in a beginner class where we don't have enough experience to troubleshoot or know if something is going wrong. Following conversations with my other 6 classmates, it appears that everyone felt like it was a stressful environment, and we were frequently nervous about going to class. It's super disappointing that an activity that is meant to be fun and educational became so negative, especially when it was not a cheap activity by any means. I'm proud of the pieces I made, and there is no doubt that Misha is a gifted artist, but she really needs to work on her teaching style. I hope she re-evaluates the expectations for a beginner class and considers having a more compassionate, patient approach, but I will not be returning to Ho/Co studio to see if that happens. read more
