I went on my own and had a wonderful time painting. Even though I don't have a pet and could have painted from any wildlife image I found online, I was able to paint my favorite stuffed animals. Recently I took my first paint and sip "Paint your pet" class from Lovejoy creations. I did this at La Mesa wine works with a good friend of mine. You send in pet photos a few days ahead of time so that she can give you a sketch of your pet on the canvas to start with. For us, the cost of the class came with the materials, instruction and a wine slushy. I am no stranger to paint and sip classes, and I have even been to some "paint your pet" classes. I have loved them all, but I really felt that the instruction in this one was top notch! First, it was a small class, so we had lots of personalized attention. I really liked how she likened the class to "adult kindergarten". For someone who doesn't really have any artistic ability, it comforted me and took away any of my insecurities.... the kindergarten part meant that we didn't need to know anything... the adult part meant that we were drinking wine... what could be better than that! For me, the part that separated Lovejoy creations from other classes is that she was able to give me critiques and suggestions without ever touching my canvas. My work was my work... and she gave me suggestions and instruction. Some other classes have either lacked the instruction, or they have gone and "fixed" my painting themselves. In the end, I am totally in love with my dog that I adopted this year, and I was able to commemorate the adoption with this painting. read more

My sisters and I took a class with Lovejoy a year ago and it is still a memory we all share with fondness. I have hung my painting up at work and it always brings a smile to my face. We aren't professional painters, and all of our paintings were accurate depictions of our pets' look and personalities. I recommend this class- even if you have to wait for an opening. We booked Lovejoy for a private Paint Your Pet session on a Saturday evening and it was one of the most awesome things ever! I had bought the gift for my boyfriend for Valentines day and then our friends wanted to come along so we were easily able to book a private lesson. Lovejoy is wonderful!! She is super responsive and extremely easy to work with. I couldn't quite believe how easy the entire thing was to coordinate. She's a talented artist and joyful and patient teacher. Her studio is small, but it was perfect for our group. We brought a picnic and spent the evening very relaxed and working on our fine works of pet art. We walked away with lovely portraits and a new inspiration to paint more! I can't recommend this class, studio and instructor enough! It's the perfect gift and/or team building thing to do. LoveJoy was awesome in the way she talks, moves around the classroom giving positive reinforcement, everything. I am in no way shape or form good at drawing or painting but there she was, a picture of my Lola Bear on my canvas that somewhat resembled her. I was proud of myself. I signed up for the "Paint Your Pet" class with a friend. It was very therapeutic and relaxing. Lovejoy helps you with little details if you need it. I had trouble with the eyes, so she stepped right in and gave it a little touch up, which sealed my painting to look awesome. A group of 7 of us rented Lovejoy's studio for 3 hrs yesterday for a private Paint Your Pet party. We had SO much fun! When we arrived, our canvases and paint stations were all set up and ready to go. We brought drinks and snacks with us and were welcomed with friendly and upbeat energy. We painted in sections and she would lead each section with easy to follow instructions with pictures, then let us do our thing. My favorite part of the class was the one-on-one time she spent with all of us to teach us different techniques or help us blend colors. Lovejoy encouraged us all to listen to ourselves and to trust the process, ensuring us that even someone with no experience could have a great picture in the end. We were unsure and shaky, but with her direction, we all created wonderful paintings! She's a wonderful person to be around and we had a blast. All supplies are included with the low price of the class ($40-45/ea). Every single one of us was happy with our paintings! I can't wait to come back for another class! read more

I stumbled upon the paint your pet class in an email from the San Diego Humane Society. I thought this would be the perfect gift for my Dad, who is deeply obsessed with his dog. Lovejoy is actually the name of the artist, which I personally found adorble. She was kind and inviting from the moment I walked into her small studio. Our class was only of 4 people, and she said she caps out at 10. This allows for an incredibly intimate experience which I was thrilled to get. As someone who dabled in art as a hobby, this attention was very much appreciated. Lovejoy is a talented artist and a patient teacher. She is is encouraging and positive during the entire session. The class really allowed for a personal touch and I found it to be incredibly relaxing. I also found out that she does schedule private classes for parties of 6 or more, which I thought would be a wonderful treat for lots of occasions, girls night in, team building, family reunions. Overall this was an incredibel experience and I am so glad that I did it. I just did "Paint Your Pet" with my family yesterday. It was awesome! I loved every second of it, and so did my family. I've never been artistically inclined, so painting makes me nervous. But my super artistic dad and sister were there and I figured I could talk one of them into fixing my disaster that was bound to happen. However, no disaster recovery was needed! I credit Lovejoy's process, instructions, and positive reinforcements for helping me create a painting that actually turned out really well! Here's how it works. You register on her website (it's getting popular since she partnered with the SD Humane Society, so sign up early) and send her 2-3 pics of your pet via email a few days before the class. She will select one of these pics to sketch onto a canvas. When you arrive to class, she's got your canvas, original pic, and some painting/shading tips ready for you. She gives you instructions and encouragement along the way, and she's available to assist the whole class. You've got 3 hours to paint, but offered a solution if you don't finish in time (everyone in my class finished). You can bring snacks and beverages if you want. At the end of 3 hours, you will have the cutest masterpiece ever! If you mention the San Diego Humane Society, Lovejoy will donate a portion of your registration fee to them. read more

Lovejoy is, without a doubt, one of the most wonderful people I've ever had the pleasure to know. Spend enough time with her and you just might begin to feel the same. Professionally: she is not only incredibly talented at her craft (which is very diverse and encompasses a variety of mediums) but she is also highly organized, reliable, and very easy going. No matter what your association with her is - taking one of her art classes, having her commission an original piece, utilizing her graphic design & photography work, whatever - she is calm, upbeat, super friendly, and always always on the ball. I lead two international nonprofit organizations, and recently Lovejoy took over all of the visual aspects of an outdoor music festival I organized for one of the charities. She made the most beautiful poster for the event and even painted a 10'x20' mural which back dropped our performance stage. Everyone loved her work! And whenever I had an idea or needed something fixed, etc, she would always get back to me right away. Amazing. On a personal note: Lovejoy has an absolute heart of gold. We just had a private painting class with Lovejoy this past Saturday. We had a group of 10 and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. We brought our own food and drinks and Lovejoy had a table set up right outside her studio door for us to set up everything. I used to take classes with Lovejoy when she used to teach for Painting & Vino ~ and I am so happy that she opened up her own studio! She has classes listed on her website, but is more than willing to work with you to schedule a private event. Lovejoy is so friendly and fun and the way she teaches is great for all levels of painters. I have taken 3 classes with Lovejoy since she opened her own studio and I have enjoyed each one! She will give you the basic plan for the painting, but will let you be as creative as you want. I'm definitely looking forward to taking more classes with her - hopefully the Poppies painting!!! Sometimes GPS seem to take people further down than the actual location of her studio. I decided to try the "Paint Your Pet" class, because it sounded like fun and 15% of the cost went to the San Diego Humane Society if we put them in the "referred by" field. I don't consider myself artistic or very creative. I spend all day in a cubicle doing techno-stuff. My drawings look like slightly more-evolved descendents of the Stick Figure Family. But Lovejoy would be drawing our pets on the canvas, so I told myself, I think I can, I think I can. I'm SO glad I did this class. This was one of the most enjoyable activities I have ever done. Lovejoy is a wonderful, positive and encouraging instructor. She is very kind and reminds us to be kind to ourselves as well, as we create our paintings. I could tell right away that she truly enjoys what she does and wants to share the love of art with her students. She had nothing but kind words of encouragement and positive things to say to us. She's more than willing to lend a helping hand to students' paintings if they wish. At the same time, she encourages us to experiment and just have fun because, as she reminded us, there is no right or wrong way to paint. To me, the class was a bargain at $45 for the 3-hour session. Knowing that she donated 15% to the Humane Society made it even better. That price included all the materials as well as the instruction. I can't wait to go back for another class. read more
