The rooms are decorated in such detail keeping with the Alice in Wonderland theme. The breakfasts are inventive and delicious, and they take special care with any food allergies/intolerances. The location was good, grounds lovely, house whimsical & fun, breakfasts yummy...but all that is for naught if you can't sleep at night. See the pic of me sitting on the edge of the all memory foam bed, with no supported siding/edges, and NO SUPPORT at all unless you are light as a feather or young. If you have back or hip issues, neck issues, or sleep with two people who literally don't want to roll into each other in the middle of the bed...these beds are torture. I had to gather blankets from the car, extra towels from the bathroom, sheets & blankets from hallway linen closets to make a pile on the floor that was better to sleep on than the bed. I toss & turn at night and get up to go to the bathroom a few times, I couldn't even get to sleep due to the slope issues. Trying to turn over the mattress would bounce up to meet my body, making turning over a huge chore. While the floor was obviously too firm, it wax far better than the bed. When we told the owner, she literally didn't bat an eye and quickly recited how everyone loves the beds & they have a list of guests to send the bed info to...it was so quick a response, with NO "I'm so sorry you had to do that" that it felt like she has heard this before and this is her pat answer. For people in the hospitality business for years, this was not an adequate response. So many of my friends said how they could've sleep in a soft bed - - so, this review is for those of you who need a SUPPORTIVE or firm bed, you will need to go elsewhere as all the rooms have the same mattresses. If I had seen a review like mine, I would have chosen to stay elsewhere - even though the themed layout was right up my alley. Between my husband being a bigger guy and us in our 60s/70s with various normal aches & pains, this mattress was a huge detriment and you just need to take it into consideration before you book. We are retired and travel 4-5 months a year around the world and I have NEVER encountered a bed like this (and they are new!!). Just feedback about the bed as the Inn is pretty and breakfast good. Was just disappointed telling them about sleeping on the floor was taken so nonchalantly.

The proximity to lovers point beach, access to parking, proximity to other businesses within walking distance, and all the amenities make this spot one of our favorites. The breakfast every morning was delicious, wine and cheese on the afternoon and then cookies later in the day were a really great touch. The staff was so friendly and accommodating and even had a pack n play that we were able to use for our son to sleep in. My one recommendation would be to purchase a couple of high chairs as that would have been a great feature for us to use during breakfast.

They've done a great job of keeping the character of the house but also modernizing it. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. Leese was at the front desk for most our stay and she was very kind and helpful. Housekeeping and the cooking staff do a great job as well. We had breakfast every morning and it was hot, fresh and provided variety each day. We stayed in Room 21, La Porte. It included a private side entrance outside the main house which was great. I think our room location was a little noisier than other rooms due to the entrance area outside the room being used by staff and some other guests. This wasn't a bad thing for us but something to note for those looking for quiet. We'll definitely come back to Pacific Grove and the Gosby will definitely be a consideration for lodging.

We stayed here in pacific grove for three days at the Martine Inn…read more We stayed in the Victoriana room. It was a nice spacious room with a beautiful view of the ocean. The windows in our room had no screens on them and you could barely open the windows enough to get fresh air. They only have parking for 9 cars under the old wooden trellises, right on Ocean Blvd. The Inn is up the hill. You take a few flights up the stairs from the parking lot to get there. We had to park on the street because the lot was mostly full except for an area where the wood was rotten and ready to fall. We didn't want to risk that falling on our car. You have to take a few flights stairs to get to the front door of the Inn. It took awhile to get our luggage and other items up there. We checked in with Pearl, the Inn Keeper, and she gave us a tour of the property and showed us to our room. After that we never saw her again. They offered a full service breakfast with a set menu with several options to pick from. Breakfast is offered 8:00am to 10:00am. The breakfast room was very nice and the food was good. They have a set menu with a variety of options. You make your selection and they serve you. All the Inn staff were very friendly, hard working and accommodating. We were so grateful for their kindness. If you needed anything they will help you. The Inn is located very close to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the wharf, which was convenient. The property is definitely old and is in dire need of repairs and upgrades. The bed in our room was awful. So uncomfortable that it made our backs hurt. The bed squeaked with every move you made. You can tell that it was very old. The bathroom was also in need of renovation. It looked dirty on the bottom of the shower probably because of wear and tear and age. When it was time to check out, at 11:00am, there was no Inn keeper to be found. We asked an employee who was painting the front game room what we should do. He said that the Inn keeper was not there and that we can leave our key on the counter and leave. I thought that was strange, but we did what he said. Also, a week before our check in, I called nearly every day to ask if we can have a feather free room, because of an allergy I have. But nobody ever answered the phone. They had a voicemail but it was so generic and just said " leave a message". I thought I was dialing the wrong number. And I couldn't leave a message because the mail box was full. If you are in the hospitality business you should probably have a more professional message for your voicemail identifying your business, and maybe have someone actually answer the phone. I thought that was very unprofessional. I think this is a one and done stay for us. I'm glad we got to experience it once. A shout out to the staff who work tirelessly to keep that place running. It's a shame the new owners are not investing in repairs and upgrades to their property.

Pros: Spectacular historical property, perfect oceanfront location, the sound of the ocean from your bedroom window, a beautiful courtyard, incredible antiques in every room, pretty wallpaper, good breakfast served in a wonderful room with panoramic ocean view. I also really liked Yuri and Casey. They were both lovely and friendly. Cons: The lobby is odd, dark and uninviting. There should be a check in desk and it should be welcoming. There could be a luxury candle burning to make it smell nice. The piano room is strange too. There should be a small bar and lively music or classical music. The sofas should be useable. It should be a place for socializing. The wood burning fireplaces are outdated and should be gas with a switch. My room was nice but smokey because of the fireplace, which I didn't use. Fresh baked cookies in the evening would be nice. Whatever their plans are, I hope the owners make improvements but don't over-modernize.

We were able to get the 3rd-floor room with a bedroom in the top of the "turret" right at the front of the house! Our daughter stayed in it, and got to sleep like a princess for the night - super cool. For such a cool place, what's even better is that it was a lot less expensive than the hotels located right on the coast. But these were just a few blocks away, so the water is still very accessible from The Charles. And most of those hotels have smaller rooms, and were far less cool and unique. We felt like we got a way better deal. And if you stay in a room on the upper floors, you very well may have an ocean view anyway (we did). We were also very happy to support a hotel with a welcoming, inclusive philosophy. All staff were very friendly and helpful. As the property is on the National Register of Historic Places, it's very well-preserved, and feels like stepping back in time - but also very well-kept; it still felt up to date in the right ways. Just one thing to note: There is no elevator. Because it's on the Register of Historic Places, the staff explained they're literally not allowed to add one. It wasn't an issue for us, but even so the staff still very kindly offered to help us carry luggage. So even for those who may have difficulty carrying luggage up stairs, it shouldn't be a big deal. We're looking forward to staying there again!

We stayed 4 nights for about $1,000 total including daily breakfast and yummy late night banana chocolate chip muffins. For this area and an Ocean View room (The lovely Bay View), that price point is incredible. In full transparency, the ocean view from the Bay View room is over the rooves of the neighbors across the street but it was still lovely. And the decor of the room, Inn and lovely garden, service and daily breakfasts were all amazing. And speaking of the breakfasts, they were plentiful and absolutely delicious. We had a wonderful omelette one morning, stuffed with fresh ingredients and a side of asparagus and fruite, delicious French Toast another and a stuffed crepe the other. We enjoyed the complimentary breakfast with a special note regarding the fresh parfait and coffee options. A few notes for those who are expecting a newly remodeled hotel.... It's an old building. We have stayed at some other old, charming inns and this one is on par with those. Water pressure and bathroom is reasonable considering the "ancient" plumbing. Let me recite the ways. - It took around 40 minutes for someone to arrive at the front desk to check us in when we arrived in the early afternoon despite several staff sitting a few feet away eating, face down watching videos on their phones. - The rooms hadn't been renovated since the 60s or 70s. And we were staying in a cabin which was supposedly an upgrade. What?! Whatever implied quality "A Kirkwood Collection" is intended to convey is clearly a bunch of BS. It's a scarlet letter on any property as far as I am concerned. What it actually means is crap service and shitty unsafe rooms. The only way this place has 4.5 stars is if people are paying (or were paid) $50 a night (95% less than during Car Week) or they are insincere reviews. AVOID AT ANY COST.
