I went to Gibbs today to get a second opinion on my headlights which had burned out. The mechanic at Keegan's told me it was a switch and he hadn't the time to work on it today. So I motored on over to Gibbs where I did two things: 1) got my headlights fixed in under 10 minutes and, 2) fell in love. Let me explain. The mechanic at Keegan's belongs not in a garage, but in a Latino soap opera. He needs a name like Juan Antonio Rivera, or Don Juan Demarco. Isn't that a movie with Depp and Brando? Anyway, This man was drop dead gorgeous and, throw in a navy blue jumpsuit--it's a recipe for romance. Now, I am a good, loyal girlfriend. But with this mechanic I didn't trust myself. Should I dump my boyfriend and fall right into my Latino lover's arms, oil stains and all? I told him of everything that happened at Keegan's, and he said, "if it's the switch, I can't work on it today either. But let me take a look at it." Then he did, and it turns out it was the easiest fix. The problem? My headlights were burnt out. No switch repair involved. Duh. "The quickest $80 you've ever spent," said the lusty mechanic as he swiped my credit card. Who knew going bankrupt could be so hot? At that moment we could've been anywhere -- Spain, Portugal, riding nude on white horses on some clear-watered Mexican beach. Then I signed my name and replied, "I'll be coming here from now on." It was just like a scene from Young & the Restless. Pretty soon I'll be quitting my position as president of a cosmetics company and convincing my Rico Suave to murder my husband! I had a flat tire. I drove my car in, after inflating the tire. Told Charlie I had a leak. He said, "I'll take a look at it right now." What!? That was somewhat of a "No Way!" moment because that never happens at service stations, but Charlie is always like that. That's why I always bring my cars to him when they need tire work. In the end the tires needed to be replaced. I could have gone over to BJ's to get a discount, but I had Charlie order a tire and install it. He even called me at home to apologize that it wouldn't be ready in the morning, but would be done in the afternoon because his suppliers didn't have it in stock. Great service. read more

It is never fun going to the mechanic only to find out it is going to cost you as much as your mortgage payment to fix your stupid car. But, at least when you go to Gibbs, you don't feel like that money is being swindled from you. I've been going to Gibbs for the last two years or so to get my car serviced. George, the lead mechanic, is straight up about what needs done, gives you a reliable estimate, and, if said estimate changes because he can't find a certain part at a certain price? He calls you. Immediately. He'll also tell you if it's a repair that can be put off for a wee bit of time, or if we need emergency brake extraction, stat. I've had both situations happen to me - this last spring where he said I could hold off on replacing a few belts until the next time I came in. And then the opposite, today. I thought I was just going to get a muffler reattached to my car and ended up with a whole new undercarriage and front brakes. (Moral of the story: RUST IS EVIL). So, thanks George, for replacing my brakes and preventing me from killing myself and maybe other people too. Definitely worth the money. read more

I decided to write a review to throw in my .02 because I realized that local businesses like this one can be quite inconsistent in their quality (given other glowing reviews) - they can be as amazing as they're unreliable at the same time. So think of my review as contributing to a more complete picture. I usually go there for gas because it's convenient/inexpensive. Recently I went in to change a flat tire because my usual mechanic referred me to them. The experience is very simple: rookie car owner with a flat tire, went in for help in somewhat distress. The tire replacement cost $20 - not too bad. The mechanic (George) was very quick and straightforward. Took the spare tire and replaced the broken one. The good things stop about here, though. Now here's my dissatisfaction. I understand that perhaps I should have known more about my car. From an expert's point of view maybe my questions were dumb. Nevertheless a little more patience could have totally flipped the experience to a positive one: he more or less blew off my questions about the broken tire (where can I order? what should I keep in mind?) and basically signaled "pay, and leave." Moreover - HELLO - IT'S YOUR PAYING CUSTOMER'S PROPERTY! The mechanic initially had trouble removing my car keys (a problem I've never had once) so he visibly got impatient and *yanked* the key out. This happened again afterwards when he brought the car out of the shop. Very hyperbolic movements; completely unnecessary. What's even worse is that he threw the broken tire/wheel inside the trunk without consulting me. I have some stuff that I haven't gotten a chance to remove from the trunk, and now everything is painted with grease and mud. It is extremely hard to appreciate any service - regardless of technical excellence - tainted with such arrogance and lack of consideration. In the future I would avoid this place as much as I can. UPDATE (1 day later): took the car to a professional tire shop, was told that two studs (?) were stripped when the spare tire was put on, and that without them the replacement tire won't work property. I guess the "technical excellence" is also out of the picture now... read more

One thing that has kept me coming back is the unadulterated, brutally honest owner/mechanic George. While I haven't had major work done (oil changes, drive belts, tire fix/replacements), he has always advised me as to what my car NEEDS versus unnecessary repairs, not many mechanics willing to that. If what you drive is a "hooptie" he's gonna let you know if it's even worth putting money into it. I've been around the block more than once and couldn't count the times another shop/mechanic has tried to upsell me on repairs that simply were not necessary in their pursuit of the almighty dollar. I'm glad I discovered this shop 4 years ago and I hope it's years before I am forced to look for another mechanic. Maybe his son follows in his old man's footsteps and, keeps this place going for years to come? (Fingers crossed). read more

I just recently had jaw surgery and cant talk. My brakes were acting strange so i drove here because I've been here many times before. Gibbs Auto Shop is one of those places that I always go to and ask myself why haven't i written a good review for them yet. Well.. Here I go finally :) I always go to Gibbs before I go anywhere else for my car. The owner, I believe his name is Jose, is always so honest and upfront with me not only giving me the best deal possible in the area but also takes his time to educate me. As a young female, I can't help but feel taken advantage of in the past with auto repair shops so i am genuinely greatful to find "Jose". In fact, I am getting my oil changed right now as I am typing this up at the cafe (sipping on a nice iced Americano yum!) next door... The fantastic location is a bonus :) .. He educated me that there's only two types of oil changes -- a regular one or synthetic one.. If its some kind of blend, then they're fooling you. I called around for quotes all day and he gave me the best price around (30$ less than another place so i was happy bc I rather support a small local business anyways .. Plus I love Gibbs!). The last time I went to him, he told me he could fix my issue by getting a brand new part for 300$ or if I just go to a specialist who can mend what I already have since they have the right tools they could do it for less than 100$ .. I definitely took his advice, saved a good chunk of money, and just overall appreciate of his honesty and never taking advantage of a young gal who wouldn't know any better. Honestly, I just want to send lots of good karma his way because I don't think i ever came across a better mechanic with such a good and honest soul. I really recommend Gibbs especially if you want someone who is honest and just want to help you make the right and smart decision for your car. I'm moving away in a few weeks and I honestly will still drive close to an hour for his services bc I will be as loyal of a customer for as long as I can! I don't know who the attendant/owner is of this gas station, but they should be in anger management classes, or on medication. I escorted my sister with an almost-flat tire to help her check the tire pressure and add air at this Gibbs Station. I had to pull up in front of the building so she had room to get to the air pump, but I left plenty of room for people to walk around my car (they may have had to walk 3-4 feet around the front of my car, that's all!), and still could get to the pumps too. When we were 3/4 of the way around the car, the attendant or owner, I'm not sure who he is, came out and told me I needed to move my car. I said I was leaving in a minute, because we were almost done. He SCREAMED at the top of his lungs at me to move my car NOW. I was completely shocked at the treatment of someone yelling at me at this gas station, when it's supposed to be FULL SERVICE. I'm sorry, but you don't scream at paying customers like that, ever. A little patience goes a long way. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I'm never going back there, and think people should rethink whether they want to buy gas from a loose cannon with no compassion, patience, or respect. Bad customer service, and a bad business man treating customers in that manner, you better believe I'm telling all my local friends to avoid that place. Repairs at Centre St Gibbs used to be reliable and fairly priced but that changed when the management changed sometime in 2011. I recently brought my wife's 08 Toyota in for a brake job and the guy said that the brake drums were rusted out and needed to be replaced for $800. Yes, one of the pads on a front disc was scoring the rotor, so it needed a new rotor. When I showed the mustache guy the obvious scoring marks on the rotor he said "no, that's not it." I'm always overcautious about negative reviews, but it's justified in this case. Bottom line, Centre St. Gibbs used to be great, now is just another ripoff auto repair shop. This station is owned by an honorable man, an important quality in any business; but especially in one that can be very expensive. George and his mechanic, do their very best to keep prices reasonable, while providing EXCELLENT service for their customers. When he says a car will be ready at 3PM; it is. When he gives you a price for a repair he lets you know if additional parts are necessary BEFORE beginning the work. And if he thinks you shouldn't spend money for a repair, he will tell you instead of profiting by doing unnecessary work. George, the guy who runs the place, is an honest and fair man. In the auto repair world, this is an extremely rare thing and merits at least 4 stars on it's own. I've never had any major work done there, but I've brought my car in there about a half dozen times over the years for small and medium sized jobs. They've done excellent jobs every time with speedy turn arounds, quality repairs that last, and below market rates more often than not. This is the only place I'll bring my car too. read more

George who owns this station is very honest, curteous and has reasonable auto repair prices. I found this service station about 6 years ago after several bad experiences with a service station on Washington Street, in JP and now ... go nowhere else ! He is very clear about estimates and informing you about costs before any repair work on your car is done. For me they do routine maintenance for 2 aging Toyotas, but I have also had large repairs (such as a replacement timing belt in a Camry, brakes, broken window motor). It was all done on time, exactly for the estimated price and available at the time George said it would be. When they can't do the work that's required, George is reliable at steering you to the right place . No getting hustled or monkey business ! read more

Woke up to a flat tire this morning.... I have never had car trouble in Boston since I have moved here so I was unsure where to go. I ended up at Gibbs and it turned out great. The man working (who was very friendly) stopped what he was doing to take a look at my tire and find the hole. He repaired it, put my tire back on for me, and I was on my way. The cost was only $20, which I thought was extremely fair. Glad to know of a good place in JP to go for auto service now! read more

I got towed here after waking up to a flat tire this morning. Called them while I waited for AAA, just to give them a heads that I was coming. Perfectly nice on the phone. When I got there a half hour later, they helped the tow truck guy get my car off the rig and immediately got to looking at my completely deflated tire. Turns out the tire was fine but the valve pipe was busted -- a $25 fix. Was out in 20 minutes. Couldn't have gone more smoothly. read more

I get gas here All. The. Time. Every time I pay with a card and they charge an extra fee (which is actually illegal) but fine whatever I'm willing to pay extra to have someone pump it. They can't seem to get it together, sometimes they've pumped without taking my card first, sometimes they take the card. Well, I pull up, say fill up regular, card. The dude starts pumping and at the end I hand him my card and it's one of the days they need the card. They proceed to tell me to go to a bank - which, I cannot bc I am on my way to a client meeting and don't have time to go to the bank, come back etc. I tell him I'd like to pay him and my card is the only way I can do it. They finally run the card after telling me that I'm wrong. Dude, how much clearer can I be when I say: Fill up. Regular. CARD. I'll be going to the other place and pumping my own to avoid their lectures about how their customers are wrong. read more

I've been coming to Gibbs for gas and repairs for the last couple years and have had only positive experiences. I recently stopped by on a Sunday to see if someone could help me remove my tail light which seemed to be jammed, so that I could replace the bulb. The gas attendant was alone and the garage was closed so he apologetically said he couldn't help. I was a little disappointed, but understood. Stopped by today without an appointment and the mechanic was very kind enough to step away from what he was doing and offer me 5 minutes of his time. He didn't grumble or complain about how busy they were. In fact, everybody has always been pleasant, whether they could assist me or not. It's the little things...that really aren't ever that little. OK, this is the problem people... Charlie is no longer there and the person I had to deal with today has to be the rudest mechanic I have ever had the displeasure to encounter. I believe him to be the owner which make matters even worse. Let's just say that my asking him what was wrong with my car after waiting for a while led to him shouting at me!
