Last visit I had, the self checkout person was being sassy for no reason. I did not ask for help and was taking my time and behind me I hear her loudly tell me "press check out"...." press card" and more. You could tell she hates her job and just wants to treat people like they are stupid or something. It was weird. I just ignored her and never turned around to look at her as not to give her bad attitude any attention. When leaving I saw she had brown hair with a long ponytail over 30. I really don't understand the micromanaging and taunting of customers here. Her behavior was off putting. Maybe avoid her at all costs if you run into this person or hopefully they put her somewhere not around customers as she can't handle it and this is coming from someone who worked customer service for years. Maybe some staff needs re training on customer service and friendliness? I would return when looking for a specific item but because some staff are rude I definitely will avoid the staff.

And props to their app--the store locator feature is like having GPS for your DIY ambitions. Now, asking for help? Total roulette. Sometimes you hit the jackpot and get someone who clearly used to be a contractor and can MacGyver their way through anything. Other times, it's a deer-in-headlights newbie, or--if the universe is really feeling cheeky--Grumpy Gus from aisle 14 who looks like he lost a bet just showing up to work. So if you already know what you need and don't mind navigating the orange maze solo, Home Depot's a solid choice. Just don't go in expecting a TED Talk on toilet flanges.

When I was struggling to mount a shelf, I got advice from one of the employees who was super friendly and explained to me exactly how to screw in the L brackets I was struggling with. He walked me over to the aisle and showed me exactly which screws would and wouldn't work for my project and explained to me how the screws would interact with different wall materials. Most recently I dropped by just before they closed to pick up drywall paste and a pallette knife. Despite me walking in ten minutes before they were supposed to shut, they didn't make me feel rushed at all and helped me find what I was looking for. I always prefer supporting a local business and I love having a neighbourhood hardware supply store I can count on with employees who feel kinda like family.

I bought an $800 electric lawn mower and the first time using it I found the self propulsion was defective. I brought it back to the store within 2 weeks of purchase and was told that because it was used I can't exchange it. I said, "of course it is used, how else could I have found out it was defective." Then they said they wanted to take it in the back of store and test it out. I agreed. 40 minutes later the manager came back and said the machine and box is covered in oil and so it wasn't returnable. I told them it can't be covered in oil it is an electric mower and they don't use oil. Then he said, exactly you must have put oil in it. I adamately denied this accusation and they then said well we won't exchange it and I would have to go through the manufacturer. When I got home I inspected the machine and the box and there was no oil. So clearly they are too lazy to take care of their customers because they don't want to do the paperwork to send it back to the manufacturer as defective.

After many years remodeling our…read morehouse, my husband and I realized the quality of the wood Dunn Lumber offers is much higher than other popular places. We don't need to spend hours looking for a wood board that is not bent. Of course, it comes to a price. Since the quality of the materials are usually higher, the price is also higher than other similar stores. But in my opinion it is totally worthy it. Services are also better than other bigger stores. We got a more customized services and people are usually very knowledgeable about the products the store offers. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who cares about higher quality materials and great customer services.

But I'm kind of generalizing about the whole Dunn chain, when I'm only actually familiar with thisone store. The people here don't necessarily know everything about everything in the store, like at the old-fashioned, one-of-a-kind hardware stores, but they're pretty good here. What about selection? Since "lumber" is in the name, it's no surprise that they excel at lumber. They're particularly good for selection of plywood. You can get ordinary ugly construction grade plywood anywhere, but if you want pretty, furniture grade plywood for something like indoor cabinets, forget the box stores; even if they have the wood you want, the quality will be more consistent here. They also have a decent selection of indoor grade solid wood. I got a really nice piece of solid oak that was ideal for a repair to an oak veneer cabinet. They have a tremendous selection of things like baseboard trim, doorway trim, window trim, crown moldings, and similar stuff that I'd have to look up to know what it's called. Some of my baseboard trim looks pretty shabby, and I've browsed it here enough to know that if I get tired of the old stuff, I'll buy the replacement trim here. There is a custom cabinet department. I haven't tried to work with them, because I know that even a spectacular bid would still be more than I want to spend to replace my kitchen cabinets. They also have a modest selection of cabinet hardware, but it doesn't cover everything. I already have a pretty sweet deck, and deck engineering is beyond my do-it-myself skill levels anyway. But this place is a great place to go for deck supplies too, either for hardcore do-it-yourselfers or people who buy the supplies and hire the labor. (I'm not writing this for contractors; they probably already know who they like to buy from.) A small fun thing about the place is that they have a little wagon by the door with free wood for kids. What better way to get rid of scraps of trim that are too small to sell? So why not five stars, if everything I've written is positive? I have no complaints; it just doesn't quite reach a "wow!" for me.

I'm in here all the time for the essentials: gloves, those foam paint thing for stain, foam pads (also for stain.. can you tell I like to stain things?), tarps. All kinds of consumables you don't want to overpay for. They're consistently stocked, easy to grab, and priced right. Where this location really shines, though, is staff and tools. The staff are great, always helpful. Harbor Freight has come a long way, and the value is hard to beat. Especially for air tools! Solid performance at prices that make it easy to expand your setup without overthinking it. I recently picked up an orange rolling tool chest on sale and honestly couldn't be happier with it. Sturdy, smooth drawers, and an incredible deal for what you get. Also worth calling out: the Apache hard cases. These things are fantastic. I use them to keep gear dry, protected, and organized, and they punch way above their price point. No frills, no nonsense. Just good prices, useful gear, and a store that makes it easy to get in, get what you need, and get back to work. This place can be a reliable staple if you're building, fixing, or tinkering with just about anything.

Aside from the service (more on that below), I find they usually have a decent stock of a variety of plants and they're usually pretty healthy, if a bit pricey compared to big box retailers. I do still prefer to shop here because it feels better than spending at a big box store but it also didn't take much research to discover Pacific Topsoils is owned by GRO-Well Brands, which is itself a conglomerate and by no means a local or small business, which I've seen some reviews assume. Service wise, it all depends on who you talk to and what mood they're in. Recently, I called to check on a product and the young man who answered brusquely said they didn't have it, so I caved and ordered it from Amazon. Then, I went to pick up some plants and discovered they had what I'd called about. I told the older gentleman who was ringing me up about the exchange and he somewhat rudely just said, "well, we always have that in stock," like I should've known, not the other employee who should've known. On the other hand, he did put out a call for someone to help me with the several bags of soil I ordered and a friendly young gal answered. She had clearly been working hard all morning but she wa so helpful and asked if there was anything else she could help me with before she left to assist another customer she noticed. If all the employees had her friendliness and pep, this place would get 5 stars, easy.
